The main problem addressed in the paper is the Torelli problem for n-dimensional varieties of general type, more specifically for varieties with ample canonical bundle. It asks under which geometrical condition for a variety the period map for the Hodge structure of weight n is a local embedding. We define a line bundle to be almost very ample iff the associated linear system is base point free and yields an injective morphism. We define instead a line bundle to be quasi very ample if it yields a birational morphism which is a local embedding on the complement of a finite set.
Our main result is the existence of infinitely many families of surfaces of general type, with quasi very ample canonical bundle, each yielding an irreducible connected component of the moduli space, such that the period map has everywhere positive dimensional fibres. These surfaces are surfaces isogenous to a product, i.e., quotients of a product of curves by the free action of a finite group G. In the paper we also give some sufficient conditions in order that global double Torelli holds for these surfaces, i.e., the isomorphism type of the surface is reconstructed from the fundamental group plus the Hodge structure on the cohomology algebra. We do this via some useful lemmas on the action of an abelian group on the cohomology of an algebraic curve. We also establish a birational description of the moduli space of curves of genus 3 with a non trivial 3-torsion divisor.
We generalize former results of Zuo and the first author showing some hyperbolicity properties of varieties supporting a variation of Hodge structure. Our proof only uses the special curvature properties of period domains. In particular, in contrast to the former approaches, it does not use any result on the asymptotic behaviour of the Hodge metric.
We show that the Fourier-Laplace transform of a regular holonomic module over the Weyl algebra of one variable, which generically underlies a variation of polarized Hodge structure, underlies itself an integrable variation of polarized twistor structure.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety, let $j:U\into X$ an immersion of a Zariski open subset, and let V be a variation of Hodge structure of weight n over U. Then IH^k(X, j_*V) is known to carry a pure Hodge structure of weight k+n, while H^k(U,V) carries a mixed Hodge structure of weight $\ge k+n$. In this note it is shown that the image of the natural map $IH^k(X,j_*V) \to H^k(U,V)$ is the lowest weight part of this mixed Hodge structure. The proof uses Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules.
We give a way of constructing real variations of mixed Hodge structures over compact Kähler manifolds by using mixed Hodge structures on Sullivan's $1$-minimal models of certain differential graded algebras associated with real variations of Hodge structures.
We show that the limit, by rescaling, of the `new supersymmetric index' attached to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a polarized variation of Hodge structure on a punctured affine line is equal to the spectral polynomial attached to the same object. We also extend the definition by Deligne of a Hodge filtration on the de Rham cohomology of a exponentially twisted polarized variation of complex Hodge structure and prove a E_1 degeneration property for it.
This text is an expository survey on the interplay between polarized variation of Hodge structure (PVHS) and the formalism of Hodge modules. We specifically review the extensions of a PVMHS over their singularities and its relation to mixed Hodge modules.

We construct a Mixed Hodge Structure on the local complete ring of the representation scheme at the holonomy of a VHS on a compact Kähler manifold and prove that the corresponding tautological representation is the holonomy of a VMHS. In order to carry out this construction we revisit the well-known work of Goldman and Millson on the deformation theory of representations of Kähler groups.
We prove a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective pair $(X,D)$ such that $X\setminus D$ supports a complex polarized variation of Hodge structures. This can be viewed as a Nevanlinna theoretic analogue of the Arakelov inequalities for variations of Hodge structures due to Deligne, Peters and Jost-Zuo. As an application, we obtain in this context a criterion of hyperbolicity that we use to derive a vast generalization of a well-known hyperbolicity result of Nadel. The first ingredient of our proof is a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective …
This article gives a survey of recent results on a generalization of the notion of a Hodge structure. The main example is related to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a variation of polarizable Hodge structure on the punctured affine line, like the Gauss-Manin systems of a proper or tame algebraic function on a smooth quasi-projective variety. Variations of non-commutative Hodge structures often occur on the tangent bundle of Frobenius manifolds, giving rise to a tt* geometry.
By analyzing the local and infinitesimal behavior of degenerating polarized variations of Hodge structure the notion of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure at infinity is introduced. It is shown that all such structures can be integrated to polarized variations of Hodge structure and that, conversely, all are limits of infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure (IVHS) at finite points. As an illustration of the rich information encoded in this new structure, some instances of the maximal dimension problem for this type of infinitesimal variation are presented and contrasted with the "c…
I make some remarks on Hodge symmetry, and prove for instance that if $k$ is a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and $X/k$ smooth, proper and Hodge-Witt scheme, and Hodge de Rham sequence of $X$ degenerates at $E_1$ and $X$ has torsion-free crystalline cohomology, then Hodge symmetry holds for $X$.
We show that the $\mathbb{Q}$-descents of the canonical $\mathbb{R}$-variation of Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type over a tube domain of type $A$ can be realized as sub-variations of Hodge structure of certain $\mathbb{Q}$-variations of Hodge structure which are naturally associated to abelian varieties of (generalized) Weil type.
These notes were written to serve as an easy reference for \cite{Wang-AF}. All the results in this presentation are well-known (or quasi-well-known) theorems in Hodge theory. Our main purpose was to give a unified approach based on a variation formula of the Lefschetz star operator, following \cite{Wang-k}. It fits quite well with Timorin's $T$-Hodge theory, i.e. the Hodge theory on the space of differential forms divided by $T$ (i.e. forms like $T\wedge u$), where $T$ is a finite wedge product of Kähler forms.
We determine the second fundamental form of a variation of Hodge Structure of a smooth projective hypersurface using the classical identification of the Hodge structure and the action of the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure with pieces of the Jacobian Ideal of the hypersurface. This simple algebraic description also implies that, in this case, the variation of Hodge structure satisfies a new set of second order partial differential equations.Comments are welcome!
In this paper we are interested in proving that the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of hypersurfaces of high enough degree lie in a proper subvariety of the variety of all infinitesimal variations. This is proved using a space of symmetrizers as defined by Donagi, to identify a geometric structure carried by the variety of all infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure.
We give a complex polarized variation of Hodge structure over a compact K"ahler manifold $M$ which controls all finite-dimensional complex polarized variations of Hodge structure over $M$ and their tensor relations. As a corollary, we obtain the cohomology algebra with values in a local system admitting multiplicative Hodge structures.
We discuss the variations of mixed Hodge structure for cohomology with compact support of quasi-projective simple normal crossing pairs. We show that they are graded polarizable admissible variations of mixed Hodge structure. Then we prove a generalization of the Fujita--Kawamata semi-positivity theorem.
Looking at the finite étale congruence covers $X(p)$ of a complex algebraic variety $X$ equipped with a variation of integral polarized Hodge structures whose period map is quasi-finite, we show that both the minimal gonality among all curves contained in $X(p)$ and the minimal volume among all subvarieties of $X(p)$ tend to infinity with $p$. This applies for example to Shimura varieties, moduli spaces of curves, moduli spaces of abelian varieties, moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau varieties, and can be made effective in many cases. The proof goes roughly as follows. We first prove a generalization…
The purpose of this note is prove that the mixed Hodge structure constructed by the author in math.AG/0301140 [The Leray spectral sequence is motivic, Invent. 2005] for geometric variations of Hodge structure coincides with the structure coming from M. Saito's mixed Hodge module theory. This note also contains a small erratum for the earlier paper.
We prove that a variation of graded-polarizable mixed Hodge structure over a punctured disk with unipotent monodromy, has a limiting mixed Hodge structure at the puncture (i.e., it is admissible in the sense of [SZ]) which splits over $\R$, if and only if certain grading of the complexified weight filtration, depending smoothly on the Hodge filtration, extends across the puncture. In particular, the result exactly supplements Schmid's Theorem for pure structures, which holds for the graded variation, and gives a Hodge-theoretic condition for the relative monodromy weight filtration to exist.
This is an expanded comment on Barannikov's paper math.AG/0006193. A symplectic version of his construction is discussed. It is shown that the duality transformation for mirror torus fibrations over the same Monge-Ampere manifold exchanges semi-infinite A-variations of Hodge structure introduced in this paper with Barannikov's semi-infinite B-variations of Hodge structure.
We construct smooth complex projective varieties of dimension 3 to 6 with variations of Hodge structure, by generalizing an example of J. Carlson and C. Simpson in dimension 2. Then, we study some of their properties, in particular their cohomology groups.
We investigate the Lyapunov Exponents of a variation of Hodge structure which has $G_2$ as geometric monodromy group, and discuss formulas for the sum of positive Lyapunov Exponents of variations of Hodge structures of any weight.
Sheng and Zuo's characteristic forms are invariants of a variation of Hodge structure. We show that they characterize Gross's canonical variations of Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type over (Hermitian symmetric) tube domains.
In this article we describe three constructions of complex variations of Hodge structure, proving the existence of interesting opposite filtrations that generalize a construction of Deligne. We also analyze the relation between deformations of Frobenius modules and certain maximally degenerate variations of Hodge structures. Finally, under a certain generation hypothesis, we show how to construct a Frobenius manifold starting from a deformation of a Frobenius module.
Variation of mixed Hodge structures(VMHS), introduced by P. Deligne, is a linear structure reflecting the geometry on cohomology of the fibers of an algebraic family, generalizing variation of Hodge structures for smooth proper families, introduced by P. Griffiths. Hence, it is a strong tool to study the variation of the geometric structure of fibers of a morphism. We describe here the degenerating properties of a VMHS of geometric origin and the existence of a relative monodromy filtration, as well the definition and properties of abstract admissible VMHS.
In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. A main result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes both the Milnor-Wood inequality of the Hermitian case and the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge str…
We present a new proof of a part of the nilpotent orbit theorem for unipotent complex variations of Hodge structure. In our proof, the $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type plays an essential role.
We first provide details for the proof of Fujita's second theorem for Kähler fibre spaces over a curve, asserting that the direct image $V$ of the relative dualizing sheaf splits as the direct sum $ V = A \oplus Q$, where $A$ is ample and $Q$ is unitary flat. Our main result then answers in the negative the question posed by Fujita whether $V$ is semiample. In fact, $V$ is semiample if and only if $Q$ is associated to a representation of the fundamental group of $B$ having finite image. Our examples are based on hypergeometric integrals.
We construct examples of smooth proper rigid-analytic varieties admitting formal model with projective special fiber and violating Hodge symmetry for cohomology in degrees $\geq 3$. This answers negatively a question raised by Hansen and Li.
We prove that the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure arising in a number of geometric situations are non-generic. In particular, we consider the case of generic hypersurfaces in complete smooth projective toric varieties, generic hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces and generic complete intersections in projective space and show that, for sufficiently high degrees, the corresponding infinitesimal variations are non-generic.
We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
We prove the Hodge symmetry type result on the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in the direct sum of holomorphic line bundles. Consequently, we show the vanishing and non-vanishing of Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in holomorphic line bundles.
Consider the holomorphic bundle with connection on $\mathbb P^1-\{0,1,\infty\}$ corresponding to the regular hypergeometric differential operator \[ \prod_{j=1}^h(D-α_j)-z\prod_{j=1}^h(D-β_j), \qquad D=z\frac{d}{dz}. \] If the numbers $α_i$ and $β_j$ are real and for all $i$ and $j$ the number $α_i-β_j$ is not integer, then the bundle with connection is known to underlie a complex polarizable variation of Hodge structures. We calculate some Hodge invariants for this variation, in particular, the Hodge numbers. From this we derive a conjecture of Corti and Golyshev. We also use non-abelian Hodg…
We discuss the Hodge theory of algebraic non-commutative spaces and analyze how this theory interacts with the Calabi-Yau condition and with mirror symmetry. We develop an abstract theory of non-commutative Hodge structures, investigate existence and variations, and propose explicit construction and classification techniques. We study the main examples of non-commutative Hodge structures coming from a symplectic or a complex geometry possibly twisted by a potential. We study the interactions of the new Hodge theoretic invariants with mirror symmetry and derive non-commutative analogues of some…
We define a map $\mathcal{P}_M$ attached to any polarized Hodge module $M$ such that the restriction of $\mathcal{P}_M$ to a locus on which $M$ is a variation of Hodge structures induces the usual period integral pairing for this variation of Hodge structures. In the case that $M$ is the minimal extension of a simple polarized variation of Hodge structures $V$, we show that the homotopy image of $\mathcal{P}_M$ is the minimal extension of the graph morphism of the usual period integral map for $V$.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of polarization form in the variation of mixed Hodge structure associated to isolated hypersurface singularities. The contribution characterizes a modification of Grothendieck residue as the polarization on the extended fiber in this case. We also provide a discussion on primitive elements to explain conjugation operator in these variations, already existed in the literature.
A systematic study of the contributions at infinity for the cohomology of variations of polarized Hodge structures over quasicompact Kähler manifolds. Several isomorphisms between different cohomologies given.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface, $Σ$ a finite set of points and $M = X\setminus Σ$. We study the $L^2$ cohomology of a polarized complex variation of Hodge structure on a Galois covering of the Riemann surface of finite type $M$. In this article we treat the case when the covering comes from a branched covering of $X$, and where $M$ is endowed with a metric asymptotic to a Poincaré metric. We prove that after tensorisation with the algebra of affiliated operators, the $L^2$ cohomology admits a pure Hodge structure.
We prove that, for every totally real number field E_0, there exists a weight three variation of Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type defined over the rational numbers with associated endomorphism algebra E_0 such that the unique irreducible factor of Calabi-Yau type of the corresponding real variation of Hodge structure is the canonical real VHS of CY type over the Hermitian symmetric domain II_6, associated to the real group SO^*(12). The main point is a rationality result for the half spin representations of a form of the group SO^*(4m) defined over a number field.
We express total set of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces via periods of variations of semi-infinite Hodge structure associated with their mirror partners.
We prove several related results on the low-degree Hodge numbers of proper smooth rigid analytic varieties over non-archimedean fields. Our arguments rely on known structure theorems for the relevant Picard varieties, together with recent advances in p-adic Hodge theory. We also define a rigid analytic Albanese naturally associated with any smooth proper rigid space.
In this paper we extend the construction of the canonical polarized variation of Hodge structures over tube domain considered by B. Gross in \cite{G} to bounded symmetric domain and introduce a series of invariants of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures, which we call characteristic subvarieties. We prove that the characteristic subvariety of the canonical polarized variations of Hodge structures over irreducible bounded symmetric domains are identified with the characteristic bundles defined by N. Mok in \cite{M}. We verified the generating property of B. Gross for all irreducible bou…
We extend the Ax-Schanuel theorem recently proven for Shimura varieties by Mok-Pila-Tsimerman to all varieties supporting a pure polarized integral variation of Hodge structures. The essential new ingredient is a volume bound on Griffiths transverse subvarieties of period domains.
We (1) characterize the Schubert varieties that arise as variations of Hodge structure (VHS); (2) show that the isotropy orbits of the infinitesimal Schubert VHS `span' the space of all infinitesimal VHS; and (3) show that the cohomology classes dual the Schubert VHS form a basis of the invariant characteristic cohomology associated to the infinitesimal period relation (a.k.a. Griffiths transversality).
Insprired by the work of C. Simpson, it is shown that every variation of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure defined over Q gives rise to a natural Higgs field on the underlying vector bundle. In the context of Mirror Symmetry it is then shown that these Higgs fields share an intimate relationship with Quantum Cohomology.
