We discuss the Hodge theory of algebraic non-commutative spaces and analyze how this theory interacts with the Calabi-Yau condition and with mirror symmetry. We develop an abstract theory of non-commutative Hodge structures, investigate existence and variations, and propose explicit construction and classification techniques. We study the main examples of non-commutative Hodge structures coming from a symplectic or a complex geometry possibly twisted by a potential. We study the interactions of the new Hodge theoretic invariants with mirror symmetry and derive non-commutative analogues of some of the more interesting consequences of Hodge theory such as unobstructedness and the construction of canonical coordinates on moduli.
We prove in full generality the mirror duality conjecture for string-theoretic Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The proof is based on properties of intersection cohomology
Starting from the Kähler moduli space of the rigid orbifold Z=E^3/\mathbb{Z}_3 one would expect for the cohomology of the generalized mirror to be a Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type (1,9,9,1). We show that such a structure arises in a natural way from rational Hodge structures on Λ^3 \mathbb{K}^6, \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Q}[ω], where ωis a primitive third root of unity. We do not try to identify an underlying geometry, but we show how special geometry arises in our abstract construction. We also show how such Hodge structure can be recovered as a polarized substructure of a bigger Hodge structure…
Using the mirror theorem [CCIT15], we give a Landau-Ginzburg mirror description for the big equivariant quantum cohomology of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. More precisely, we prove that the big equivariant quantum D-module of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack is isomorphic to the Saito structure associated to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We give a GKZ-style presentation of the quantum D-module, and a combinatorial description of quantum cohomology as a quantum Stanley-Reisner ring. We establish the convergence of the mirror isomorphism and of quantum cohomology in the big and equivariant …
We express total set of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces via periods of variations of semi-infinite Hodge structure associated with their mirror partners.
We consider the conjectures from the paper by Katzarkov, Kontsevich, and Pantev about Landau-Ginzburg Hodge numbers associated to tamely compactifiable Landau-Ginzburg models. We test these conjectures in case of dimension two, verifying some and giving a counterexample to the other.
Mirrors $X^{\vee}$ of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$ in weighted projective spaces ${\Bbb P}(w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ can be obtained as Calabi-Yau compactifications of non-degenerate affine toric hypersurfaces defined by Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is the lattice simplex spanned by $d+1$ lattice vectors $v_i$ satisfying the relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. In this paper, we compute the stringy $E$-function of mirrors $X^\vee$ and compare it with the Vafa's orbifold $E$-function of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$. As a result, we prove the equalities of Hodge numbers …
This proceedings note introduces aspects of the authors' work relating mirror symmetry and integral variations of Hodge structure. The emphasis is on their classification of the integral variations of Hodge structure which can underly families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere with b^3 = 4, or equivalently h^{2,1} = 1, and the related issues of geometric realization of these variations. The presentation parallels that of the first author's talk at the BIRS workshop.
The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau-Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau-Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main results shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers d…
We prove a representation-theoretic version of Borisov-Batyrev mirror symmetry, and use it to construct infinitely many new pairs of orbifolds with mirror Hodge diamonds, with respect to the usual Hodge structure on singular complex cohomology. We conjecture that the corresponding orbifold Hodge diamonds are also mirror. When $X$ is the Fermat quintic in $¶^4$, and $\tilde{X}^*$ is a $\Sym_5$-equivariant, toric resolution of its mirror $X^*$, we deduce that for any subgroup $Γ$ of the alternating group $A_5$, the $Γ$-Hilbert schemes $Γ$-$\Hilb(X)$ and $Γ$-$\Hilb(\tilde{X}^*)$ are smooth Calabi…
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
Associativity of the quantum product ensures flatness of the Dubrovin connection and is the basis for Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We use ring and module structure on cohomology pertaining to a Lagrangian submanifold to define an extension of the A-model Variation of mixed Hodge structure that matches the predictions from extended mirror symmetry. Our construction makes contact with axioms for open Gromov-Witten theory recently proposed by Solomon-Tukachinsky.
We correct the definitions and descriptions of the integral structures in [U14]. The previous flat basis in [ibid] is characterized by the Frobenius solutions and integral in the first approximation by mean of the graded quotients of monodromy filtration, but not integral in the strict sense. In this article, we use the integral structure of Iritani in [I11] for A-model. Using this precise version, we study open mirror symmetry for quintic threefolds through log mixed Hodge theory, especially the recent result on Neron models for admissible normal functions with non-torsion extensions in the j…
This is a survey of results and conjectures on mirror symmetry phenomena in the non-Abelian Hodge theory of a curve. We start with the conjecture of Hausel-Thaddeus which claims that certain Hodge numbers of moduli spaces of flat SL(n,C) and PGL(n,C)-connections on a smooth projective algebraic curve agree. We then change our point of view in the non-Abelian Hodge theory of the curve, and concentrate on the SL(n,C) and PGL(n,C) character varieties of the curve. Here we discuss a recent conjecture of Hausel-Rodriguez-Villegas which claims, analogously to the above conjecture, that certain Hodge…
We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with th…
We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the fami…
We study the Hodge numbers of Landau-Ginzburg models as defined by Katzarkov, Kontsevich and Pantev. First we show that these numbers can be computed using ordinary mixed Hodge theory, then we give a concrete recipe for computing these numbers for the Landau-Ginzburg mirrors of Fano threefolds. We finish by proving that for a crepant resolution of a Gorenstein toric Fano threefold $X$ there is a natural LG mirror $(Y,\mathsf{w})$ so that $h^{p,q}(X) = f^{3-q,p}(Y,\mathsf{w})$.
We study the mixed Hodge theoretic aspects of the B-model side of local mirror symmetry. Our main objectives are to define an analogue of the Yukawa coupling in terms of the variations of the mixed Hodge structures and to study its properties. We also describe a local version of Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa's holomorphic anomaly equation.
Borcea-Voisin threefolds provided some of the first examples of mirror pairs in the Hodge-theoretic sense, but their mirror symmetry at the quantum level have not previously been shown. We prove a Givental-style quantum mirror theorem for certain Borcea-Voisin threefolds: by means of certain birational models, we show that their Gromov-Witten J-functions are related by a mirror map to solutions of the multi-parameter Picard-Fuchs equations coming from the variation of Hodge structures of their mirror partners.
In this paper, we present an application of mirror symmetry to arithmetic geometry. The main result is the computation of the period of a mixed Hodge structure, which lends evidence to its expected motivic origin. More precisely, given a mirror pair $(M,W)$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the prepotential of the complexified Kahler moduli space of $M$ admits an expansion with a constant term that is frequently of the form $$-3\, χ(M) \,ζ(3)/(2 πi)^3+r,$$ where $r \in \mathbb{Q}$ and $χ(M)$ is the Euler characteristic of $M$. We focus on the mirror pairs for which the deformation space of the mirror …
Calabi-Yau manifolds are important objects in algebraic geometry and in theoretical physics. A hypothesis of mirror symmetry is that Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension 3 come in pairs, with the Hodge numbers of one manifold mirroring the Hodge numbers of the other. In this thesis, Calabi-Yau manifolds are constructed by smoothing Stanley-Reisner schemes of triangulations of 3-spheres. The triangulations of the 3-sphere with 7 or 8 vertices have been constructed and classified by Grünbaum and Sreedharan (1967). In this thesis we characterize the Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained from the triangulati…
A compact complex manifold is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic if there exists an entire curve on it. Using mirror symmetry we establish that there are (possibly singular) elliptic or rational curves on any Calabi-Yau manifold $X$, whose mirror dual $\check X$ exists and is not "Hodge degenerate", therefore proving that $X$ is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic. We are not aware of any higher dimensional simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds that satisfy the "Hodge degenerate" condition.
This work establishes a subtle connection between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau threefolds and that of curves of higher genus. The linking structure is what we call a perverse curve. We show how to obtain such from Calabi-Yau threefolds in the Batyrev mirror construction and prove that their Hodge diamonds are related by the mirror duality.
We investigate Hodge-theoretic properties of Calabi-Yau complete intersections $V$ of $r$ semi-ample divisors in $d$-dimensional toric Fano varieties having at most Gorenstein singularities. Our main purpose is to show that the combinatorial duality proposed by second author agrees with the duality for Hodge numbers predicted by mirror symmetry. It is expected that the complete verification of mirror symmetry predictions for singular Calabi-Yau varieties $V$ of arbitrary dimension demands considerations of so called {\em string-theoretic Hodge numbers} $h^{p,q}_{\rm st}(V)$. We restrict oursel…
In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. We also interpret the resulting families of de Rham complexes attacted to a potential in terms of mirror symmetry for…
We introduce a generalization of variations of Hodge structures living over moduli spaces of non-commutative deformations of complex manifolds. Hodge structure associated with a point of such moduli space is an element of Sato type grassmanian of semi-infinite subspaces in H^*(X,C)[[h^{-1},h]]. Periods associated with such semi-infinite Hodge structures serve in order to extend mirror symmetry relations in dimensions greater then three.
The paper contains a proof that elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau manifold is a Jacobi form, finds in which dimensions the elliptic genus is determined by the Hodge numbers and shows that elliptic genera of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety and its mirror coincide up to sign. The proof of the mirror property is based on the extension of elliptic genus to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties with Gorenstein singularities.
We study the representation of a finite group acting on the cohomology of a non-degenerate, invariant hypersurface of a projective toric variety. We deduce an explicit description of the representation when the toric variety has at worst quotient singularities. As an application, we conjecture a representation-theoretic version of Batyrev and Borisov's mirror symmetry between pairs of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and prove it when the hypersurfaces are both smooth or have dimension at most 3. An interesting consequence is the existence of pairs of Calabi-Yau orbifolds whose Hodge diamonds are mir…
We propose a new approach to the Mirror Symmetry Conjecture in a form suitable to possibly non-Kähler compact complex manifolds whose canonical bundle is trivial. We apply our methods by proving that the Iwasawa manifold $X$, a well-known non-Kähler compact complex manifold of dimension $3$, is its own mirror dual to the extent that its Gauduchon cone, replacing the classical Kähler cone that is empty in this case, corresponds to what we call the local universal family of essential deformations of $X$. These are obtained by removing from the Kuranishi family the two "superfluous" dimensions of…
This is an expanded comment on Barannikov's paper math.AG/0006193. A symplectic version of his construction is discussed. It is shown that the duality transformation for mirror torus fibrations over the same Monge-Ampere manifold exchanges semi-infinite A-variations of Hodge structure introduced in this paper with Barannikov's semi-infinite B-variations of Hodge structure.
In this paper we will study the moduli spaces of log Hodge structures introduced by Kato-Usui. This moduli space is a partial compactification of a discrete quotient of a period domain. We treat the following 2 cases: (A) the case where the period domain is Hermitian symmetric, (B) the case where the Hodge structures are of the mirror quintic type. Especially we study a property of the torsor.
By normalizing the space of commuting pairs of elements in a reductive Lie group G, and the corresponding space for the Langlands dual group, we construct pairs of hyperkahler orbifolds which satisfy the conditions to be mirror partners in the sense of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow. The same holds true for commuting quadruples in a compact Lie group. The Hodge numbers of the mirror partners, or more precisely their orbifold E-polynomials, are shown to agree, as predicted by mirror symmetry. These polynomials are explicitly calculated when G is a quotient of SL(n).
We work in the setting of Calabi-Yau mirror symmetry. We establish conditions under which Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry (which relates the derived Fukaya category to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the mirror) implies Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry (which relates genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants to period integrals on the mirror), following the work of Barannikov, Kontsevich and others. As an application, we explain in detail how to prove the classical mirror symmetry prediction for the number of rational curves in each degree on the quintic threefold, via the third-…
The moduli spaces of flat $\mathrm{SL}_2$- and $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-connections are known to be singular SYZ-mirror partners. We establish the equality of Hodge numbers of their intersection (stringy) cohomology. In rank two, this answers a question raised by Tamás Hausel in Remark 3.30 of "Global topology of the Hitchin system".
For three-partition triple Hodge integrals related to the topological vertex, we derive Eynard-Orantin type recursion relations from the cut-and-join equation. This establishes a version of local mirror symmetry for the local $C^3$ geometry with three D-branes, as proposed by Marino and Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti.
We propose a new, conjectural recursion solution for Hurwitz numbers at all genera. This conjecture is based on recent progress in solving type B topological string theory on the mirrors of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which we briefly review to provide some background for our conjecture. We show in particular how this B-model solution, combined with mirror symmetry for the one-leg, framed topological vertex, leads to a recursion relation for Hodge integrals with three Hodge class insertions. Our conjecture in Hurwitz theory follows from this recursion for the framed vertex in the limit of infi…
We prove the Mirror Conjecture for Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with a holomorphic symplectic form. Such manifolda are also known as complex manifolds of hyperkaehler type. We obtain that a complex manifold of hyperkaehler type is Mirror dual to itself. The Mirror Conjecture is stated (following Kontsevich, ICM talk) as the equivalence of certain algebraic structures related to variations of Hodge structures. We compute the canonical flat coordinates on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds of hyperkaehler type, introduced to Mirror Symmetry by Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa.
Insprired by the work of C. Simpson, it is shown that every variation of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure defined over Q gives rise to a natural Higgs field on the underlying vector bundle. In the context of Mirror Symmetry it is then shown that these Higgs fields share an intimate relationship with Quantum Cohomology.
We prove the Bouchard-Mariño Conjecture for the framed one-legged topological vertex by deriving the Eynard-Orantin type recursion relations from the cut-and-join equation satisfied by the relevant triple Hodge integrals. This establishes a version of local mirror symmetry for the local $C^3$ geometry with one $D$-brane.
We introduce the notion of stringy E-function for an arbitrary normal irreducible algebraic variety X with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove some basic properties of stringy E-functions and compute them explicitly for arbitrary Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. Using stringy E-functions, we propose a general method to define stringy Hodge numbers for projective algebraic varieties with at worst Gorenstein canonical singularities. This allows us to formulate the topological mirror duality test for arbitrary Calabi-Yau varieties with canonical singularities. In Appendix we explain non-Ar…
The predictions of the Mirror Symmetry are extended in dimensions n>3 and are proven for projective complete intersections Calabi-Yau varieties. Precisely, we prove that the total collection of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of such variety can be expressed in terms of certain invariants of a new generalization of variation of Hodge structures attached to the dual variety. To formulate the general principles of Mirror Symmetry in arbitrary dimension it is necessary to introduce the ``extended moduli space of complex structures'' M. An analog M\to H*(X,C)[n] of the classical period map is de…
We give a new proof of the computation of Hodge integrals we have previously obtained for the quantum singularity (FJRW) theory of chain polynomials. It uses the classical localization formula of Atiyah--Bott and we phrase our proof in a general framework that is suitable for future studies of gauged linear sigma models (GLSM). As a by-product, we obtain the first equivariant version of mirror symmetry without concavity, generalizing the work of Chiodo--Iritani--Ruan on the Landau--Ginzburg side.
Calabi--Yau manifolds have risen to prominence in algebraic geometry, in part because of mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry. After Bershadsky--Cecotti--Ooguri--Vafa (BCOV), it is expected that genus 1 curve counting on a Calabi--Yau manifold is related to a conjectured invariant, only depending on the complex structure of the mirror, and built from Ray--Singer holomorphic analytic torsions. To this end, extending work of Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa in dimension 3, we introduce and study the BCOV invariant of Calabi--Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimension. To determine it, knowledge of its behaviou…
In a previous paper, the author introduced a Z-structure in quantum cohomology defined by the K-theory and the Gamma class and showed that it is compatible with mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds. Applying the quantum Lefschetz principle to the previous results, we find an explicit relationship between solutions to the quantum differential equation for toric complete intersections and the periods (or oscillatory integrals) of their mirrors. We describe in detail the mirror isomorphism of variations of Z-Hodge structure for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces (Batyrev's mirror).
We study a certain family of determinantal quintic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ whose singularities are similar to the well-studied Barth-Nieto quintic. Smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with Hodge numbers $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(52,2)$ are obtained by taking crepant resolutions of the singularities. It turns out that these smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds are in a two dimensional mirror family to the complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^{4}\times\mathbb{P}^{4}$ which have appeared in our previous study of Reye congruences in dimension three. We compactify the two dimensional fam…
Multiply-connected Calabi-Yau threefolds are of particular interest for both string theorists and mathematicians. Recently it was pointed out that one of the generic degenerations of these spaces (occurring at codimension one in moduli space) is an isolated singularity which is a finite cyclic quotient of the conifold; these were called hyperconifolds. It was also shown that if the order of the quotient group is even, such singular varieties have projective crepant resolutions, which are therefore smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds. The resulting topological transitions were called hyperconifold tran…
We give a mathematical account of a recent string theory calculation which predicts the number of rational curves on the generic quintic threefold. Our account involves the interpretation of Yukawa couplings in terms of variations of Hodge structure, a new $q$-expansion principle for functions on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds, and the ``mirror symmetry'' phenomenon recently observed by string theorists.
In this paper, we explore a notion of nonabelian Hodge structure on the fundamental group of an algebraic variety. This is approach is compared to some alternative approaches due to Morgan, Hain and others. We also give criteria for a variety to be a Hodge theoretic K(pi,1), which roughly means that the cohomology of variations of mixed Hodge structure can be determined from the group.
In this paper, we prove a general theorem concerning the analyticity of the closure of a subspace defined by a family of variations of mixed Hodge structures, which includes the analyticity of the zero loci of degenerating normal functions. For the proof, we use a moduli of the valuative version of log mixed Hodge structures.
