The predictions of the Mirror Symmetry are extended in dimensions n>3 and are proven for projective complete intersections Calabi-Yau varieties. Precisely, we prove that the total collection of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of such variety can be expressed in terms of certain invariants of a new generalization of variation of Hodge structures attached to the dual variety. To formulate the general principles of Mirror Symmetry in arbitrary dimension it is necessary to introduce the ``extended moduli space of complex structures'' M. An analog M\to H*(X,C)[n] of the classical period map is described and is shown to be a local isomorphism. The invariants of the generalized variations of Hodge structures are introduced. It is proven that their generating function satisfies the system of WDVV-equations exactly as in the case of Gromov-Witten invariants. The basic technical tool utilized is the Deformation theory.
We show how Chern classes of a Calabi Yau hypersurface in a toric Fano manifold can be expressed in terms of the holomorphic at a maximal degeneracy point period of its mirror. We also consider the relation between Chern classes and the periods of mirrors for complete intersections in Grassmanian Gr(2,5).
The Fano classification program proposed by Coates-Corti-Galkin-Golyshev-Kasprzyk is based on the mirror symmetry prediction that the regularized quantum period of a Fano should be equivalent to the classical period of its mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We prove that this mirror equivalence follows from versions of the Frobenius structure conjecture of Gross-Hacking-Keel. We also find that the regularized quantum period, which is defined in terms of descendant Gromov-Witten numbers, is in fact given by certain naive curve counts.
In this paper, we explicitly derive the generalized mirror transformation of quantum cohomology of general type projective hypersurfaces, proposed in our previous article, as an effect of coordinate change of the virtual Gauss-Manin system.
We express total set of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces via periods of variations of semi-infinite Hodge structure associated with their mirror partners.
We introduce a special class of convex rational polyhedral cones which allows to construct generalized Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension $(d + 2(r-1))$, where $r$ is a positive integer and d is the dimension of critical string vacua with central chatge $c = 3d$. It is conjectured that the natural combinatorial duality satisfies by these cones corresponds to the mirror involution. Using the theory of toric varieties, we show that our conjecture includes as special cases all already known examples of mirror pairs proposed by physicists and agrees with previous conjectures of the authors concerni…
We prove Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture for certain mirror pairs arising from Batyrev-Borisov's `dual reflexive Gorenstein cones' construction. In particular we prove HMS for all Greene-Plesser mirror pairs (i.e., Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in quotients of weighted projective spaces). We also prove it for certain mirror Calabi-Yau complete intersections arising from Borisov's construction via dual nef partitions, and also for certain Calabi-Yau complete intersections which do not have a Calabi-Yau mirror, but instead are mirror to a Calabi-Yau subcategory of the derived cate…
We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with th…
A conjecture expressing genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants in mirror-theoretic terms of semi-simple Frobenius structures and complex oscillating integrals is formulated. The proof of the conjecture is given for torus-equivariant Gromov - Witten invariants of compact Kähler manifolds with isolated fixed points and for concave bundle spaces over such manifolds. Several results on genus 0 Gromov - Witten theory include: a non-linear Serre duality theorem, its application to the genus 0 mirror conjecture, a mirror theorem for concave bundle spaces over toric manifolds generalizing a recent result of…
We describe the mirror of the Z orbifold as a representation of a class of generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds that can be realized as manifolds of dimension five and seven. Despite their dimension these correspond to superconformal theories with $c=9$ and so are perfectly good for compactifying the heterotic string to the four dimensions of space-time. As a check of mirror symmetry we compute the structure of the space of complex structures of the mirror and check that this reproduces the known results for the Yukawa couplings and metric appropriate to the Kahler class parameters on the Z orbifo…
In this paper, we study the structure of the quantum cohomology ring of a projective hypersurface with non-positive 1st Chern class. We prove a theorem which suggests that the mirror transformation of the quantum cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau hypersurface has a close relation with the ring of symmetric functions, or with Schur polynomials. With this result in mind, we propose a generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology of a hypersurface with negative first Chern class and construct an explicit prediction formula for three point Gromov-Witten invariants up to cubic rat…
In a recent paper, A. Libgober showed that the multiplicative sequence {Q_i(c_1,...,c_i)} of Chern classes corresponding to the power series Q(z)=1/Gamma(1+z) appears in a relation between the Chern classes of certain Calabi-Yau manifolds and the periods of their mirrors. We show that the polynomials Q_i can be expressed in terms of multiple zeta values.
We revisit our construction of mirror symmetries for compactifications of Type II superstrings on twisted connected sum $G_2$ manifolds. For a given $G_2$ manifold, we discuss evidence for the existence of mirror symmetries of two kinds: one is an autoequivalence for a given Type II superstring on a mirror pair of $G_2$ manifolds, the other is a duality between Type II strings with different chiralities for another pair of mirror manifolds. We clarify the role of the B-field in the construction, and check that the corresponding massless spectra are respected by the generalized mirror maps. We …
We study generalized complex structures on K3 surfaces, in the sense of Hitchin. For each real parameter t between one and infinity we exhibit two families of generalized K3 surfaces, (M,cal{I}_{zeta}) and (M,cal{J}_{zeta}), parametrized by zeta in CP^1, which are Mukai dual for zeta=0 and infinity, amd mirror partners for zeta not equal to 0 and infinity. Moreover, the Fourier-Mukai equivalence D^b(M,cal{I}_0) -> D^b(M,cal{J}_0) induces an isomorphism phi_T between the spaces of first order deformations of (M,cal{I}_0) and (M,cal{J}_0) as generalized complex manifolds, and the deformations (M…
In this note we study several conditions to be imposed on a mirror symmetry candidate to the generic multi-quasihomogeneous Calabi-Yau variety defined in the product of the quasihomogeneous projective spaces. We propose several properties for a Calabi-Yau complete intersection variety so that its period integrals can be expressed by means of quasihomogeneous weights of its mirror symmetry candidate as it has been suggested by Berglund, Candelas et altri. As a corollary, we see certain duality between the monodromy data and the Poincaré polynomials of the Euler characteristic for the pairs of o…
In the previous paper, the author defined equivariant Floer cohomology for a complete intersection in a toric variety and showed that it is isomorphic to the small quantum D-module after a mirror transformation when the first Chern class c_1(M) of the tangent bundle is nef. In this paper, even when c_1(M) is not nef, we show that the equivariant Floer cohomology reconstructs the big quantum D-module under certain conditions on the ambient toric variety. The proof is based on a mirror theorem by Coates and Givental. The reconstruction procedure here gives a generalized mirror transformation fir…
From wall structures to closed mirror symmetry. The case of $K_{\mathbb{P}^2}$: Renormalized periods over the positive real locus, closed Gromov-Witten invariants from wall functions, and tropical enumeration
In this paper we develop a relative version of T-duality in generalized complex geometry which we propose as a manifestation of mirror symmetry. Let M be an n-dimensional smooth real manifold, V a rank n real vector bundle on M, and nabla a flat connection on V. We define the notion of a nabla-semi-flat generalized complex structure on the total space of V. We show that there is an explicit bijective correspondence between nabla-semi-flat generalized complex structures on the total space of V and nabla(dual)-semi-flat generalized complex structures on the total space of the dual of V. Similarl…
In a previous paper, the author introduced a Z-structure in quantum cohomology defined by the K-theory and the Gamma class and showed that it is compatible with mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds. Applying the quantum Lefschetz principle to the previous results, we find an explicit relationship between solutions to the quantum differential equation for toric complete intersections and the periods (or oscillatory integrals) of their mirrors. We describe in detail the mirror isomorphism of variations of Z-Hodge structure for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces (Batyrev's mirror).
In this paper, we propose another characterization of the generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology rings of general type projective hypersurfaces. This characterics is useful for explicit determination of the form of the generalized mirror transformation. As applications, we rederive the generalized mirror transformation up to $d=3$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants obtained in our previous article, and determine explicitly the the generalized mirror transformation for the $d=4, 5$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants in the case when the first Chern class of the hypersurface e…
This paper discusses the overlap of the Hori-Vafa formulation of mirror symmetry with some other constructions. We focus on compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces \mathcal{M}_G = {G = 0} in weighted complex projective spaces. The Hori-Vafa formalism relates a family {\mathcal{M}_G \in WCP^{m-1}_{Q_1,...,Q_m}[s] | \sum_{i=1}^m Q_i = s} of such hypersurfaces to a single Landau-Ginzburg mirror theory. A technique suggested by Hori and Vafa allows the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the corresponding mirror periods to be determined. Some examples in which the variety \mathcal{M}_G is crepantly resol…
For the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold and the theory of stability conditions [Bri07], there have been two mathematical aims given by physical reasoning. One is that we should define stability conditions by central charges of quintic periods [Hos04,Kon12,KonSoi13], which extend the Gamma class [KKP,Iri09,Iri11]. The other is that for well-motivated stability conditions on a derived Fukaya-type category, each stable object should be a Lagrangian [ThoYau]. We answer affirmatively to these aims with the simplest homological mirror symmetry (HMS for short) of the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold [Oka09,Fu…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of the $L$-functions of critical motives. Using the theory of mirror symmetry, we will develop a method to compute the Deligne's period for a Calabi-Yau threefold in the mirror family of a one-parameter mirror pair. We will give two examples to show how this method works, and we will express the Deligne's period in terms of the classical periods of the threeform. Using this method, we will compute the Deligne's period of a Calabi-Yau threefold studied…
We present a detailed study of the generalized hypergeometric system introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinski (GKZ-hypergeometric system) in the context of toric geometry. GKZ systems arise naturally in the moduli theory of Calabi-Yau toric varieties, and play an important role in applications of the mirror symmetry. We find that the Gröbner basis for the so-called toric ideal determines a finite set of differential operators for the local solutions of the GKZ system. At the special point called the large radius limit, we find a close relationship between the principal parts of the oper…
We study mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds within the framework of the Gauss-Manin system. Applying the flat coordinates to the Gauss-Manin system for the periods, we derive differential equations for the mirror map in addition to the ordinary Picard-Fuchs equations for the periods. These equations are obtained for a class of one-parameter models and a two-parameter model of Fermat type Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We describe how to find period integrals and Picard-Fuchs differential equations for certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau manifolds. These families can be seen as varieties over a finite field, in which case we show in an explicit example that the number of points of a generic element can be given in terms of p-adic period integrals. We also discuss several approaches to finding zeta functions of mirror manifolds and their factorizations. These notes are based on lectures given at the Fields Institute during the thematic program on Calabi-Yau Varieties: Arithmetic, Geometry, and Physic…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
There is a large number of different ways of constructing Calabi-Yau manifolds, as well as related non-geometric formulations, relevant in string compactifications. Showcasing this diversity, we discuss explicit deformation families of discretely distinct Hirzebruch hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and identify their toric counterparts in detail. This precise isomorphism is then used to investigate some of their special divisors of interest, and in particular the secondary deformation family of their Calabi-Yau subspaces. In particular, most of the above so called Hirzebruch…
We prove a generalized mirror conjecture for non-negative complete intersections in symplectic toric manifolds. Namely, we express solutions of the PDE system describing quantum cohomology of such a manifold in terms of suitable hypergeometric functions. Revision 03.03.97: we correct an error in Introduction.
C. Voisin and C. Borcea have constructed mirror pairs of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds by taking the quotient of the product of an elliptic curve with a K3 surface endowed with a non-symplectic involution. In this paper, we generalize the construction of Borcea and Voisin to any prime order and build three and four dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifolds. We classify the topological types that are obtained and show that, in dimension 4, orbifolds built with an involution admit a crepant resolution and come in topological mirror pairs. We show that for odd primes, there are generically no minimal …
We prove that the punctured generalized conifolds and punctured orbifolded conifolds are mirror symmetric under the SYZ program with quantum corrections. This mathematically confirms the gauge-theoretic prediction by Aganagic-Karch-Lüst-Miemiec, and also provides a supportive evidence to Morrison's conjecture that geometric transitions are reversed under mirror symmetry.
In this paper, we will apply the ideas from the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds to study the modular forms and one-parameter family of K3 surfaces found by Beukers and Peters, which provide enlightenment to the two mysterious sequences constructed by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. We will construct a fourth order differential operator and a prepotential from the canonical solutions of this differential operator. The third derivative of this prepotential with respect to the mirror map defines a Yukawa coupling that is a weight-4 modular form. The instanton expansion…
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ with a simple normal crossing divisor $D:=D_1+D_2+...+D_n$, where $D_i\subset X$ are smooth, irreducible and nef. We prove a mirror theorem for multi-root stacks $X_{D,\vec r}$ by constructing an $I$-function, a slice of Givental's Lagrangian cone for Gromov--Witten theory of multi-root stacks. We provide three applications: (1) We show that some genus zero invariants of $X_{D,\vec r}$ stabilize for sufficiently large $\vec r$. (2) We state a generalized local-log-orbifold principle conjecture and prove a version of it. (3) We show that regularized quantum…
We modify Gross's construction of mirror symmetry for $\mathbb{P}^2$ by introducing a descendent tropical Landau-Ginzburg potential. The period integrals of this potential compute a modification of Givental's J-function, explicitly encoding a larger sector of the big phase space. As a byproduct of this construction, new tropical methods for computing certain descendent Gromov-Witten invariants are defined.
In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rig…
In this paper, we generalize Walcher's computation of the open Gromov-Witten invariants of the quintic hypersurface to Fano and Calabi-Yau projective hypersurfaces. Our main tool is the open virtual structure constants. We also propose the generalized mirror transformation for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, some parts of which are proven explicitly. We also discuss possible modification of the multiple covering formula for the case of higher dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. The generalized disk invariants for some Calabi-Yau and Fano manifolds are shown and they are certainly integers aft…
In earlier joint work with our collaborators Akhtar, Coates, Corti, Heuberger, Kasprzyk, Prince and Tveiten, we gave a conjectural classification of a broad class of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces, using Mirror Symmetry. We proposed that del Pezzo surfaces $X$ with isolated cyclic quotient singularities such that $X$ admits a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric degeneration correspond under Mirror Symmetry to maximally mutable Laurent polynomials $f$ in two variables, and that the quantum period of such a surface $X$, which is a generating function for Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$, coincides with th…
In this article we study a differential algebra of modular-type functions attached to the periods of a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of quintic threefolds. Such an algebra is generated by seven functions satisfying functional and differential equations in parallel to the modular functional equations of classical Eisenstein series and the Ramanujan differential equation. Our result is the first example of automorphic-type functions attached to varieties whose period domain is not Hermitian symmetric. It is a reformulation and realizati…
In this paper, we directly derive generalized mirror transformation of projective hypersurfaces up to degree 3 genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants by comparing Kontsevich localization formula with residue integral representation of the virtual structure constants. We can easily generalize our method for rational curves of arbitrary degree except for combinatorial complexities.
We describe in detail the space of the two Kähler parameters of the Calabi--Yau manifold $¶_4^{(1,1,1,6,9)}[18]$ by exploiting mirror symmetry. The large complex structure limit of the mirror, which corresponds to the classical large radius limit, is found by studying the monodromy of the periods about the discriminant locus, the boundary of the moduli space corresponding to singular Calabi--Yau manifolds. A symplectic basis of periods is found and the action of the $Sp(6,\Z)$ generators of the modular group is determined. From the mirror map we compute the instanton expansion of the Yukawa co…
We formulate general conjectures about the relationship between the A-model connection on the cohomology of a $d$-dimensional Calabi-Yau complete intersection $V$ of $r$ hypersurfaces $V_1, \ldots, V_r$ in a toric variety ${\bf P}_Σ$ and the system of differential operators annihilating the special hypergeometric function $Φ_0$ depending on the fan $Σ$. In this context, the Mirror Symmetry phenomenon can be interpreted as the following twofold characterization of the series $Φ_0$. First, $Φ_0$ is defined by intersection numbers of rational curves in ${\bf P}_Σ$ with the hypersurfaces $V_i$ and…
In this paper we propose and discuss a mirror construction for complete intersections in partial flag manifolds $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$. This construction includes our previous mirror construction for complete intersection in Grassmannians and the mirror construction of Givental for complete flag manifolds. The key idea of our construction is a degeneration of $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ to a certain Gorenstein toric Fano variety $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ which has been investigated by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai. We describe a natural small crepant desingularization of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ and prove a gene…
The quantum period of a variety X is a generating function for certain Gromov-Witten invariants of X which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. In this paper we compute the quantum periods of all 3-dimensional Fano manifolds. In particular we show that 3-dimensional Fano manifolds with very ample anticanonical bundle have mirrors given by a collection of Laurent polynomials called Minkowski polynomials. This was conjectured in joint work with Golyshev. It suggests a new approach to the classification of Fano manifolds: by proving an appropriate mirror theorem and then classifying Fano m…
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
We continue our study on the hypergeometric system $E(3,6)$ which describes period integrals of the double cover family of K3 surfaces. Near certain special boundary points in the moduli space of the K3 surfaces, we construct the local solutions and determine the so-called mirror maps expressing them in terms of genus two theta functions. These mirror maps are the K3 analogues of the elliptic $λ$-function. We find that there are two non-isomorphic definitions of the lambda functions corresponding to a flip in the moduli space. We also discuss mirror symmetry for the double cover K3 surfaces an…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and the geometry of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. We will prove that the mirror map of the Dwork family is equal to the period map of the Legendre family. This result provides an interesting explanation to the modularities of counting functions for K3 surfaces from the mirror symmetry point of view. We will also discuss the relations between the arithmetic geometry of smooth fibers of the Fermat pencil (Dwork family) and that of the smooth fibers of the Legendre family, e.g. Shioda-Inose structure…
The aim of this article is to report on recent progress in understanding mirror symmetry for some non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds. We first construct four new smooth non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{1,1}=1, whose existence was previously conjectured by C. van Enckevort and D. van Straten. We then compute the period integrals of candidate mirror families of F. Tonoli's degree 13 Calabi-Yau threefold and three of the new Calabi-Yau threefolds. The Picard-Fuchs equations coincide with the expected Calabi-Yau equations. Some of the mirror families turn out to…
Aided by mirror symmetry, we determine the number of holomorphic disks ending on the real Lagrangian in the quintic threefold. The tension of the domainwall between the two vacua on the brane, which is the generating function for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, satisfies a certain extension of the Picard-Fuchs differential equation governing periods of the mirror quintic. We verify consistency of the monodromies under analytic continuation of the superpotential over the entire moduli space. We reproduce the first few instanton numbers by a localization computation directly in the A-model, a…
