In this note we study several conditions to be imposed on a mirror symmetry candidate to the generic multi-quasihomogeneous Calabi-Yau variety defined in the product of the quasihomogeneous projective spaces. We propose several properties for a Calabi-Yau complete intersection variety so that its period integrals can be expressed by means of quasihomogeneous weights of its mirror symmetry candidate as it has been suggested by Berglund, Candelas et altri. As a corollary, we see certain duality between the monodromy data and the Poincaré polynomials of the Euler characteristic for the pairs of our varieties.
We discuss the relation between transposition mirror symmetry of Berlund and Hübsch for bimodal singularities and polar duality of Batyrev for associated toric K3 hypersurfaces. We also show that homological mirror symmetry for singularities implies the geometric construction of Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams of bimodal singularities by Ebeling and Ploog.
We prove that the Borcea-Voisin mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds admit projective birational models that satisfy the Berglund-Hübsch-Chiodo-Ruan transposition rule. This shows that the two mirror constructions provide the same mirror pairs, as soon as both can be defined.
We consider a pair of quiver varieties (X;X') related by 3d mirror symmetry, where X =T*Gr(k,n) is the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian of k-planes of n-dimensional space. We give formulas for the elliptic stable envelopes on both sides. We show an existence of an equivariant elliptic cohomology class on X $\times$ X' (the Mother function) whose restrictions to X and X' are the elliptic stable envelopes of those varieties. This implies, that the restriction matrices of the elliptic stable envelopes for X and X' are equal after transposition and identification of the equivariant parameters …
We show how Chern classes of a Calabi Yau hypersurface in a toric Fano manifold can be expressed in terms of the holomorphic at a maximal degeneracy point period of its mirror. We also consider the relation between Chern classes and the periods of mirrors for complete intersections in Grassmanian Gr(2,5).
There is a large number of different ways of constructing Calabi-Yau manifolds, as well as related non-geometric formulations, relevant in string compactifications. Showcasing this diversity, we discuss explicit deformation families of discretely distinct Hirzebruch hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and identify their toric counterparts in detail. This precise isomorphism is then used to investigate some of their special divisors of interest, and in particular the secondary deformation family of their Calabi-Yau subspaces. In particular, most of the above so called Hirzebruch…
The Fano classification program proposed by Coates-Corti-Galkin-Golyshev-Kasprzyk is based on the mirror symmetry prediction that the regularized quantum period of a Fano should be equivalent to the classical period of its mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We prove that this mirror equivalence follows from versions of the Frobenius structure conjecture of Gross-Hacking-Keel. We also find that the regularized quantum period, which is defined in terms of descendant Gromov-Witten numbers, is in fact given by certain naive curve counts.
We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with th…
In a recent paper, A. Libgober showed that the multiplicative sequence {Q_i(c_1,...,c_i)} of Chern classes corresponding to the power series Q(z)=1/Gamma(1+z) appears in a relation between the Chern classes of certain Calabi-Yau manifolds and the periods of their mirrors. We show that the polynomials Q_i can be expressed in terms of multiple zeta values.
From wall structures to closed mirror symmetry. The case of $K_{\mathbb{P}^2}$: Renormalized periods over the positive real locus, closed Gromov-Witten invariants from wall functions, and tropical enumeration
Let $X$ be a holomorphic symplectic variety with a torus $\mathsf{T}$ action and a finite fixed point set of cardinality $k$. We assume that elliptic stable envelope exists for $X$. Let $A_{I,J}= \operatorname{Stab}(J)|_{I}$ be the $k\times k$ matrix of restrictions of the elliptic stable envelopes of $X$ to the fixed points. The entries of this matrix are theta-functions of two groups of variables: the Kähler parameters and equivariant parameters of $X$. We say that two such varieties $X$ and $X'$ are related by the 3d mirror symmetry if the fixed point sets of $X$ and $X'$ have the same card…
For the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold and the theory of stability conditions [Bri07], there have been two mathematical aims given by physical reasoning. One is that we should define stability conditions by central charges of quintic periods [Hos04,Kon12,KonSoi13], which extend the Gamma class [KKP,Iri09,Iri11]. The other is that for well-motivated stability conditions on a derived Fukaya-type category, each stable object should be a Lagrangian [ThoYau]. We answer affirmatively to these aims with the simplest homological mirror symmetry (HMS for short) of the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold [Oka09,Fu…
In a previous paper, the author introduced a Z-structure in quantum cohomology defined by the K-theory and the Gamma class and showed that it is compatible with mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds. Applying the quantum Lefschetz principle to the previous results, we find an explicit relationship between solutions to the quantum differential equation for toric complete intersections and the periods (or oscillatory integrals) of their mirrors. We describe in detail the mirror isomorphism of variations of Z-Hodge structure for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces (Batyrev's mirror).
This paper discusses the overlap of the Hori-Vafa formulation of mirror symmetry with some other constructions. We focus on compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces \mathcal{M}_G = {G = 0} in weighted complex projective spaces. The Hori-Vafa formalism relates a family {\mathcal{M}_G \in WCP^{m-1}_{Q_1,...,Q_m}[s] | \sum_{i=1}^m Q_i = s} of such hypersurfaces to a single Landau-Ginzburg mirror theory. A technique suggested by Hori and Vafa allows the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the corresponding mirror periods to be determined. Some examples in which the variety \mathcal{M}_G is crepantly resol…
We describe how to find period integrals and Picard-Fuchs differential equations for certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau manifolds. These families can be seen as varieties over a finite field, in which case we show in an explicit example that the number of points of a generic element can be given in terms of p-adic period integrals. We also discuss several approaches to finding zeta functions of mirror manifolds and their factorizations. These notes are based on lectures given at the Fields Institute during the thematic program on Calabi-Yau Varieties: Arithmetic, Geometry, and Physic…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of the $L$-functions of critical motives. Using the theory of mirror symmetry, we will develop a method to compute the Deligne's period for a Calabi-Yau threefold in the mirror family of a one-parameter mirror pair. We will give two examples to show how this method works, and we will express the Deligne's period in terms of the classical periods of the threeform. Using this method, we will compute the Deligne's period of a Calabi-Yau threefold studied…
The 2-dimensional Lyness map is a 5-periodic birational map of the plane which may famously be resolved to give an automorphism of a log Calabi-Yau surface, given by the complement of an anticanonical pentagon of $(-1)$-curves in a del Pezzo surface of degree 5. This surface has many remarkable properties and, in particular, it is mirror to itself. We construct the 3-dimensional big brother of this surface by considering the 3-dimensional Lyness map, which is an 8-periodic birational map. The variety we obtain is a special (non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial) affine Fano 3-fold of type $V_{12}$, and we…
The predictions of the Mirror Symmetry are extended in dimensions n>3 and are proven for projective complete intersections Calabi-Yau varieties. Precisely, we prove that the total collection of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of such variety can be expressed in terms of certain invariants of a new generalization of variation of Hodge structures attached to the dual variety. To formulate the general principles of Mirror Symmetry in arbitrary dimension it is necessary to introduce the ``extended moduli space of complex structures'' M. An analog M\to H*(X,C)[n] of the classical period map is de…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
We study mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds within the framework of the Gauss-Manin system. Applying the flat coordinates to the Gauss-Manin system for the periods, we derive differential equations for the mirror map in addition to the ordinary Picard-Fuchs equations for the periods. These equations are obtained for a class of one-parameter models and a two-parameter model of Fermat type Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We modify Gross's construction of mirror symmetry for $\mathbb{P}^2$ by introducing a descendent tropical Landau-Ginzburg potential. The period integrals of this potential compute a modification of Givental's J-function, explicitly encoding a larger sector of the big phase space. As a byproduct of this construction, new tropical methods for computing certain descendent Gromov-Witten invariants are defined.
In earlier joint work with our collaborators Akhtar, Coates, Corti, Heuberger, Kasprzyk, Prince and Tveiten, we gave a conjectural classification of a broad class of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces, using Mirror Symmetry. We proposed that del Pezzo surfaces $X$ with isolated cyclic quotient singularities such that $X$ admits a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric degeneration correspond under Mirror Symmetry to maximally mutable Laurent polynomials $f$ in two variables, and that the quantum period of such a surface $X$, which is a generating function for Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$, coincides with th…
We express total set of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces via periods of variations of semi-infinite Hodge structure associated with their mirror partners.
In this paper, we will apply the ideas from the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds to study the modular forms and one-parameter family of K3 surfaces found by Beukers and Peters, which provide enlightenment to the two mysterious sequences constructed by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. We will construct a fourth order differential operator and a prepotential from the canonical solutions of this differential operator. The third derivative of this prepotential with respect to the mirror map defines a Yukawa coupling that is a weight-4 modular form. The instanton expansion…
In this article we study a differential algebra of modular-type functions attached to the periods of a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of quintic threefolds. Such an algebra is generated by seven functions satisfying functional and differential equations in parallel to the modular functional equations of classical Eisenstein series and the Ramanujan differential equation. Our result is the first example of automorphic-type functions attached to varieties whose period domain is not Hermitian symmetric. It is a reformulation and realizati…
For all k>0 integer, we consider the regularised I-function of the family of del Pezzo surfaces of degree 8k+4 in P(2,2k+1,2k+1, 4k+1), first constructed by Johnson and Kollár. We show that this function, which is of hypergeometric type, is a period of an explicit pencil of curves. Thus the pencil is a candidate LG mirror of the family of del Pezzo surfaces. The main feature of these surfaces, which makes the mirror construction especially interesting, is that the anticanonical system is empty: because of this, our mirrors are not covered by any other construction known to us. We discuss conne…
We describe in detail the space of the two Kähler parameters of the Calabi--Yau manifold $¶_4^{(1,1,1,6,9)}[18]$ by exploiting mirror symmetry. The large complex structure limit of the mirror, which corresponds to the classical large radius limit, is found by studying the monodromy of the periods about the discriminant locus, the boundary of the moduli space corresponding to singular Calabi--Yau manifolds. A symplectic basis of periods is found and the action of the $Sp(6,\Z)$ generators of the modular group is determined. From the mirror map we compute the instanton expansion of the Yukawa co…
We continue our study on the hypergeometric system $E(3,6)$ which describes period integrals of the double cover family of K3 surfaces. Near certain special boundary points in the moduli space of the K3 surfaces, we construct the local solutions and determine the so-called mirror maps expressing them in terms of genus two theta functions. These mirror maps are the K3 analogues of the elliptic $λ$-function. We find that there are two non-isomorphic definitions of the lambda functions corresponding to a flip in the moduli space. We also discuss mirror symmetry for the double cover K3 surfaces an…
The quantum period of a variety X is a generating function for certain Gromov-Witten invariants of X which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. In this paper we compute the quantum periods of all 3-dimensional Fano manifolds. In particular we show that 3-dimensional Fano manifolds with very ample anticanonical bundle have mirrors given by a collection of Laurent polynomials called Minkowski polynomials. This was conjectured in joint work with Golyshev. It suggests a new approach to the classification of Fano manifolds: by proving an appropriate mirror theorem and then classifying Fano m…
These are notes of my lectures given at the school on intersection theory and moduli at the ICTP, Trieste. We construct moduli spaces of K3 surfaces and higherdimensional hyperkaehler manifolds, including moduli spaces of (2,2)-conformal field theories associated to hyperkaehler manifolds, and describe their period domains. Recent results on these manifolds are discussed from the moduli space point of view. The second goal is to present a detailed account of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces. Arguments due to Aspinwall and Morrison allow one to explain various versions of mirror symmetry (e.g. f…
Aided by mirror symmetry, we determine the number of holomorphic disks ending on the real Lagrangian in the quintic threefold. The tension of the domainwall between the two vacua on the brane, which is the generating function for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, satisfies a certain extension of the Picard-Fuchs differential equation governing periods of the mirror quintic. We verify consistency of the monodromies under analytic continuation of the superpotential over the entire moduli space. We reproduce the first few instanton numbers by a localization computation directly in the A-model, a…
Given a Tyurin degeneration of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection in a toric variety, we prove gluing formulas relating the generalized functional invariants, periods, and $I$-functions of the mirror Calabi-Yau family and those of the two mirror Landau-Ginzburg models. Our proof makes explicit the "gluing/splitting" of fibrations in the Doran-Harder-Thompson mirror conjecture. Our gluing formula implies an identity, obtained by composition with their respective mirror maps, that relates the absolute Gromov-Witten invariants for the Calabi-Yaus and relative Gromov-Witten invariants for the quas…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and the geometry of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. We will prove that the mirror map of the Dwork family is equal to the period map of the Legendre family. This result provides an interesting explanation to the modularities of counting functions for K3 surfaces from the mirror symmetry point of view. We will also discuss the relations between the arithmetic geometry of smooth fibers of the Fermat pencil (Dwork family) and that of the smooth fibers of the Legendre family, e.g. Shioda-Inose structure…
The aim of this article is to report on recent progress in understanding mirror symmetry for some non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds. We first construct four new smooth non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{1,1}=1, whose existence was previously conjectured by C. van Enckevort and D. van Straten. We then compute the period integrals of candidate mirror families of F. Tonoli's degree 13 Calabi-Yau threefold and three of the new Calabi-Yau threefolds. The Picard-Fuchs equations coincide with the expected Calabi-Yau equations. Some of the mirror families turn out to…
We discuss how the Gross-Siebert reconstruction theorem applies to the local mirror symmetry of Chiang, Klemm, Yau and Zaslow. The reconstruction theorem associates to certain combinatorial data a degeneration of (log) Calabi-Yau varieties. While in this case most of the subtleties of the construction are absent, an important normalization condition already introduces rich geometry. This condition guarantees the parameters of the construction are canonical coordinates in the sense of mirror symmetry. The normalization condition is also related to a count of holomorphic disks and cylinders, as …
We study a problem related to Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture for the case of a generic curve $\cal Y$ with bi-degree (2,2) in a product of projective lines ${\Bbb P}^{1} \times {\Bbb P}^{1}$. We calculate two differenent monodromy representations of period integrals for the affine variety ${\cal X}^{(2,2)}$ obtained by the dual polyhedron mirror variety construction from $\cal Y$. The first method that gives a full representation of the fundamental group of the complement to singular loci relies on the generalised Picard-Lefschetz theorem. The second method uses the analyt…
We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-…
We consider certain families of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and their mirror partners constructed from Fermat hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-spaces. Our focus is the topological mirror symmetry. There are at least three known ingredients to describe the topological mirror symmetry, namely, integral vertices in reflexive polytopes, monomials in graded polynomial rings (with some group actions), and periods (and Picard-Fuchs differential equations). In this paper we will introduce Fermat motives associated to these Calabi-Yau orbifolds and then use them to give motivic interpretation of the top…
Given a smooth 3-fold $Y$, a line bundle $L \to Y$, and a section $s$ of $L$ such that the vanishing locus of $s$ is a normal crossings surface $X$ with graph-like singular locus, we present a way to reconstruct the singularity category of $X$ as a homotopy limit of several copies of the category of matrix factorizations of $xyz : \mathbb{A}^{3} \to \mathbb{A}^{1}$ (the mirror to the Fukaya category of the pair of pants). This extends our previous result for the case where $L$ is trivialized. The key technique is the classification of non-two-periodic autoequivalences of the category of matrix…
In this paper, we generalize Walcher's computation of the open Gromov-Witten invariants of the quintic hypersurface to Fano and Calabi-Yau projective hypersurfaces. Our main tool is the open virtual structure constants. We also propose the generalized mirror transformation for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, some parts of which are proven explicitly. We also discuss possible modification of the multiple covering formula for the case of higher dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. The generalized disk invariants for some Calabi-Yau and Fano manifolds are shown and they are certainly integers aft…
We work in the setting of Calabi-Yau mirror symmetry. We establish conditions under which Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry (which relates the derived Fukaya category to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the mirror) implies Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry (which relates genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants to period integrals on the mirror), following the work of Barannikov, Kontsevich and others. As an application, we explain in detail how to prove the classical mirror symmetry prediction for the number of rational curves in each degree on the quintic threefold, via the third-…
In this paper, we present an application of mirror symmetry to arithmetic geometry. The main result is the computation of the period of a mixed Hodge structure, which lends evidence to its expected motivic origin. More precisely, given a mirror pair $(M,W)$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the prepotential of the complexified Kahler moduli space of $M$ admits an expansion with a constant term that is frequently of the form $$-3\, χ(M) \,ζ(3)/(2 πi)^3+r,$$ where $r \in \mathbb{Q}$ and $χ(M)$ is the Euler characteristic of $M$. We focus on the mirror pairs for which the deformation space of the mirror …
We propose Picard-Fuchs equations for periods of nonabelian mirrors in this paper. The number of parameters in our Picard-Fuchs equations is the rank of the gauge group of the nonabelian GLSM, which is eventually reduced to the actual number of Kähler parameters. These Picard-Fuchs equations are concise and novel. We justify our proposal by reproducing existing mathematical results, namely Picard-Fuchs equations of Grassmannians and Calabi-Yau manifolds as complete intersections in Grassmannians. Furthermore, our approach can be applied to other nonabelian GLSMs, so we compute Picard-Fuchs equ…
