Complex Ricci-flat (i.e., Calabi-Yau) hypersurfaces in spaces admitting a maximal (toric) $U(1)^n$ gauge symmetry of general type (encoded by certain non-convex and multi-layered multitopes) may degenerate, but can be smoothed by rational (Laurent) anticanonical sections. Nevertheless, the phases of the Gauged Linear Sigma Model and an increasing number of their classical and quantum data are just as computable as for their siblings encoded by reflexive polytopes, and they all have transposition mirror models. Showcasing such hypersurfaces in so-called Hirzebruch scrolls shows this class of constructions to be infinitely vast, yet amenable to standard and well-founded algebro-geometric methods of analysis.
We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hypersurfaces, by which the Kahler cone and degeneration cone for a mirror CY pair are interchangeable under mirror symmetry.…
We consider regular Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $N$-dimensional smooth toric varieties. On such a hypersurface in the neighborhood of the large complex structure limit point we construct a fibration over a sphere $S^{N-1}$ whose generic fibers are tori $T^{N-1}$. Also for certain one-parameter families of such hypersurfaces we show that the monodromy transformation is induced by a translation of the $T^{N-1}$ fibration by a section. Finally we construct a dual fibration and provide some evidence that it describes the mirror family.
We describe a strategy for computing Yukawa couplings and the mirror map, based on the Picard-Fuchs equation. (Our strategy is a variant of the method used by Candelas, de la Ossa, Green, and Parkes in the case of quintic hypersurfaces.) We then explain a technique of Griffiths which can be used to compute the Picard-Fuchs equations of hypersurfaces. Finally, we carry out the computation for four specific examples (including quintic hypersurfaces, previously done by Candelas et al.). This yields predictions for the number of rational curves of various degrees on certain hypersurfaces in weight…
In this paper, we directly derive generalized mirror transformation of projective hypersurfaces up to degree 3 genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants by comparing Kontsevich localization formula with residue integral representation of the virtual structure constants. We can easily generalize our method for rational curves of arbitrary degree except for combinatorial complexities.
In this paper, we study the structure of the quantum cohomology ring of a projective hypersurface with non-positive 1st Chern class. We prove a theorem which suggests that the mirror transformation of the quantum cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau hypersurface has a close relation with the ring of symmetric functions, or with Schur polynomials. With this result in mind, we propose a generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology of a hypersurface with negative first Chern class and construct an explicit prediction formula for three point Gromov-Witten invariants up to cubic rat…
This work is concerned with branes and differential equations for one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. For a certain class of B-branes we derive the inhomogeneous Picard--Fuchs equations satisfied by the brane superpotential. In this way we arrive at a prediction for the real BPS invariants for holomorphic maps of worldsheets with low Euler characteristics, ending on the mirror A-branes.
We use toric geometry to study open string mirror symmetry on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. For a mirror pair of toric branes on a mirror pair of toric hypersurfaces we derive a canonical hypergeometric system of differential equations, whose solutions determine the open/closed string mirror maps and the partition functions for spheres and discs. We define a linear sigma model for the brane geometry and describe a correspondence between dual toric polyhedra and toric brane geometries. The method is applied to study examples with obstructed and classically unobstructed brane moduli at various p…
In this paper, we generalize Walcher's computation of the open Gromov-Witten invariants of the quintic hypersurface to Fano and Calabi-Yau projective hypersurfaces. Our main tool is the open virtual structure constants. We also propose the generalized mirror transformation for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, some parts of which are proven explicitly. We also discuss possible modification of the multiple covering formula for the case of higher dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. The generalized disk invariants for some Calabi-Yau and Fano manifolds are shown and they are certainly integers aft…
In this paper, we propose another characterization of the generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology rings of general type projective hypersurfaces. This characterics is useful for explicit determination of the form of the generalized mirror transformation. As applications, we rederive the generalized mirror transformation up to $d=3$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants obtained in our previous article, and determine explicitly the the generalized mirror transformation for the $d=4, 5$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants in the case when the first Chern class of the hypersurface e…
Mirror Symmetry, Picard-Fuchs equations and instanton corrected Yukawa couplings are discussed within the framework of toric geometry. It allows to establish mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau spaces for which the mirror manifold had been unavailable in previous constructions. Mirror maps and Yukawa couplings are explicitly given for several examples with two and three moduli.
Mirrors $X^{\vee}$ of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$ in weighted projective spaces ${\Bbb P}(w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ can be obtained as Calabi-Yau compactifications of non-degenerate affine toric hypersurfaces defined by Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is the lattice simplex spanned by $d+1$ lattice vectors $v_i$ satisfying the relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. In this paper, we compute the stringy $E$-function of mirrors $X^\vee$ and compare it with the Vafa's orbifold $E$-function of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$. As a result, we prove the equalities of Hodge numbers …
By means of toric geometry we study hypersurfaces in weighted projective space of dimension four. In particular we compute for a given manifold its intrinsic topological coupling. We find that the result agrees with the calculation of the corresponding coupling on the mirror model in the large complex structure limit.
Compactifications with fluxes and branes motivate us to study various enumerative invariants of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper, we study non-perturbative corrections depending on both open and closed string moduli for a class of compact Calabi-Yau manifolds in general dimensions. Our analysis is based on the methods using relative cohomology and generalized hypergeometric system. For the simplest example of compact Calabi-Yau fivefold, we explicitly derive the associated Picard-Fuchs differential equations and compute the quantum corrections in terms of the open and closed flat coordinate…
We study open string mirror symmetry for one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We identify mirror pairs of D-brane configurations, derive the corresponding inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations, and solve for the domainwall tensions as analytic functions over moduli space. Our calculations exemplify several features that had not been seen in previous work on the quintic or local Calabi-Yau manifolds. We comment on the calculation of loop amplitudes.
Recently two groups have listed all sets of weights (k_1,...,k_5) such that the weighted projective space P_4^{(k_1,...,k_5)} admits a transverse Calabi-Yau hypersurface. It was noticed that the corresponding Calabi-Yau manifolds do not form a mirror symmetric set since some 850 of the 7555 manifolds have Hodge numbers (b_{11},b_{21}) whose mirrors do not occur in the list. By means of Batyrev's construction we have checked that each of the 7555 manifolds does indeed have a mirror. The `missing mirrors' are constructed as hypersurfaces in toric varieties. We show that many of these manifolds m…
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
The paper contains a proof that elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau manifold is a Jacobi form, finds in which dimensions the elliptic genus is determined by the Hodge numbers and shows that elliptic genera of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety and its mirror coincide up to sign. The proof of the mirror property is based on the extension of elliptic genus to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties with Gorenstein singularities.
We construct a surprisingly large class of new Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$ with small Picard numbers and propose a construction of their mirrors $X^*$ using smoothings of toric hypersurfaces with conifold singularities. These new examples are related to the previously known ones via conifold transitions. Our results generalize the mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Grassmannians and flag manifolds via toric degenerations. There exist exactly 198849 reflexive 4-polytopes whose 2-faces are only triangles or parallelograms of minimal volume. Every such polytope gives rise to …
We present a detailed study of the generalized hypergeometric system introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinski (GKZ-hypergeometric system) in the context of toric geometry. GKZ systems arise naturally in the moduli theory of Calabi-Yau toric varieties, and play an important role in applications of the mirror symmetry. We find that the Gröbner basis for the so-called toric ideal determines a finite set of differential operators for the local solutions of the GKZ system. At the special point called the large radius limit, we find a close relationship between the principal parts of the oper…
The moduli dependence of $(2,2)$ superstring compactifications based on Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space has so far only been investigated for Fermat-type polynomial constraints. These correspond to Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with $c=9$ whose potential is a sum of $A$-type singularities. Here we consider the generalization to arbitrary quasi-homogeneous singularities at $c=9$. We use mirror symmetry to derive the dependence of the models on the complexified Kähler moduli and check the expansions of some topological correlation functions against explicit genus zero and genu…
For each family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, Batyrev has proposed a possible mirror partner (which is also a family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces). We explain a natural construction of the isomorphism between certain Hodge groups of these hypersurfaces, as predicted by mirror symmetry, which we call the monomial-divisor mirror map. We indicate how this map can be interpreted as the differential of the expected mirror isomorphism between the moduli spaces of the two Calabi-Yau manifolds. We formulate a very precise conjecture about the form of that mirror isomorphism, which whe…
The goal of the present paper is to calculate the complex structure moduli space Kähler potentials for hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces and compare with the partition functions of their mirror GLSMs. We explicitly perform the Kähler potential computation and show that the corresponding formula is well-defined in case of quasismooth hypersurfaces. We then construct the mirror GLSM with an appropriate number of Kähler parameters and discuss the interpretation of its partition function in terms of mirror symmetry. Namely, it is shown that different contributions to the partition functi…
Greene, Morrison and Plesser \cite{GMP} have recently suggested a general method for constructing a mirror map between a $d$-dimensional Calabi-Yau hypersurface and its mirror partner for $d > 3$. We apply their method to smooth hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces and compute the Chern numbers of holomorphic curves on these hypersurfaces. As anticipated, the results satisfy nontrivial integrality constraints. These examples differ from those studied previously in that standard methods of algebraic geometry which work in the ordinary projective space case for low degree curves are not g…
We consider the connection between two constructions of the mirror partner for the Calabi-Yau orbifold. This orbifold is defined as a quotient by some suitable subgroup $G$ of the phase symmetries of the hypersurface $ X_M $ in the weighted projective space, cut out by a quasi-homogeneous polynomial $W_M$. The first, Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz (BHK) construction, uses another weighted projective space and the quotient of a new hypersurface $X_{M^T}$ inside it by some dual group $G^T$. In the second, Batyrev construction, the mirror partner is constructed as a hypersurface in the toric variety def…
We discuss B-type tensor product branes in mirrors of two-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, using the language of matrix factorizations. We determine the open string moduli of the branes at the Gepner point. By turning on both bulk and boundary moduli we then deform the brane away from the Gepner point. Using the deformation theory of matrix factorizations we compute Massey products. These contain the information about higher order deformations and obstructions. The obstructions are encoded in the F-term equations, which we obtain from the Massey product algorithm. We show that the F-terms c…
