In a recent paper, A. Libgober showed that the multiplicative sequence {Q_i(c_1,...,c_i)} of Chern classes corresponding to the power series Q(z)=1/Gamma(1+z) appears in a relation between the Chern classes of certain Calabi-Yau manifolds and the periods of their mirrors. We show that the polynomials Q_i can be expressed in terms of multiple zeta values.
In this paper, we study the relation between the zeta function of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the zeta function of its mirror. Two types of arithmetic relations are discovered. This motivates us to formulate two general arithmetic mirror conjectures for the zeta functions of a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We use a formula of Bultot to compute the motivic zeta function for the toric degeneration of the quartic K3 and its Gross-Siebert mirror dual degeneration. We check for this explicit example that the identification of the logarithm of the monodromy and the mirror dual Lefschetz operator works at an integral level.
In this paper, we partially extend recent results of Wan concerning the relationship between the zeta functions of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and its (singular) mirror variety.
We prove that if two Calabi-Yau invertible pencils have the same dual weights, then they share a common factor in their zeta functions. By using Dwork cohomology, we demonstrate that this common factor is related to a hypergeometric Picard--Fuchs differential equation. The factor in the zeta function is defined over the rationals and has degree at least the order of the Picard--Fuchs equation. As an application, we relate several pencils of K3 surfaces to the Dwork pencil, obtaining new cases of arithmetic mirror symmetry.
We study generalized complex structures on K3 surfaces, in the sense of Hitchin. For each real parameter t between one and infinity we exhibit two families of generalized K3 surfaces, (M,cal{I}_{zeta}) and (M,cal{J}_{zeta}), parametrized by zeta in CP^1, which are Mukai dual for zeta=0 and infinity, amd mirror partners for zeta not equal to 0 and infinity. Moreover, the Fourier-Mukai equivalence D^b(M,cal{I}_0) -> D^b(M,cal{J}_0) induces an isomorphism phi_T between the spaces of first order deformations of (M,cal{I}_0) and (M,cal{J}_0) as generalized complex manifolds, and the deformations (M…
The aim of this work is an analytic investigation of differential equations producing mirror maps as well as giving new examples of mirror maps; one of these examples is related to (rational approximations to) $ζ(4)$. We also indicate certain observations that might become a subject of further research.
We show that coefficients in the Laurent series of Igusa Zeta functions are periods. This will be used in a subsequent paper (by P. Brosnan) to show that certain numbers occurring in study of Feynman amplitudes (upto gamma factors) are periods.
In this paper we prove a conjecture due to Goncharov and Manin which states that the periods of the moduli spaces $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ of Riemann spheres with $n$ marked points are multiple zeta values. In order to do this, we introduce a differential algebra of multiple polylogarithms on $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$, and prove that it is closed under the operation of taking primitives. The main idea is to apply a version of Stokes' formula iteratively, and to exploit the geometry of the moduli spaces to reduce each period integral to multiple zeta values. We also give a geometric interpretation of th…
The algebra of big zeta values we introduce in this paper is an intermediate object between multiple zeta values and periods of the multiple zeta motive. It consists of number series generalizing multiple zeta values, the simplest examples, which are not multiple zeta series, are Tornheim sums. We show that convergent big zeta values are periods of the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero on one hand and multiple zeta values on the other hand. It gives an alternative way to prove that any such period may be expressed as a rational linear combination of multiple zeta values and a simple …
We describe how to find period integrals and Picard-Fuchs differential equations for certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau manifolds. These families can be seen as varieties over a finite field, in which case we show in an explicit example that the number of points of a generic element can be given in terms of p-adic period integrals. We also discuss several approaches to finding zeta functions of mirror manifolds and their factorizations. These notes are based on lectures given at the Fields Institute during the thematic program on Calabi-Yau Varieties: Arithmetic, Geometry, and Physic…
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
We show how Chern classes of a Calabi Yau hypersurface in a toric Fano manifold can be expressed in terms of the holomorphic at a maximal degeneracy point period of its mirror. We also consider the relation between Chern classes and the periods of mirrors for complete intersections in Grassmanian Gr(2,5).
The Fano classification program proposed by Coates-Corti-Galkin-Golyshev-Kasprzyk is based on the mirror symmetry prediction that the regularized quantum period of a Fano should be equivalent to the classical period of its mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We prove that this mirror equivalence follows from versions of the Frobenius structure conjecture of Gross-Hacking-Keel. We also find that the regularized quantum period, which is defined in terms of descendant Gromov-Witten numbers, is in fact given by certain naive curve counts.
M. Kobayashi introduced a notion of duality of weight systems. We tone this notion slightly down to a notion called coupling. We show that coupling induces a relation between the reduced zeta functions of the monodromy operators of the corresponding singularities generalizing an observation of K. Saito concerning Arnold's strange duality. We show that the weight systems of the mirror symmetric pairs of M. Reid's list of 95 families of Gorenstein K3 surfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces are strongly coupled. This includes Arnold's strange duality where the corresponding weight systems are st…
The cyclotomic $p$-adic multi-zeta values are the $p$-adic periods of $π_{1}(\mathbb{G}_{m} \setminus μ_{M},\cdot),$ the unipotent fundamental group of the multiplicative group minus the $M$-th roots of unity. In this paper, we compute the cyclotomic $p$-adic multi-zeta values at all depths. This paper generalizes the results in [6] and [7]. Since the main result gives explicit formulas we expect it to be useful in proving non-vanishing and transcendence results for these $p$-adic periods and also, through the use of $p$-adic Hodge theory, in proving non-triviality results for the correspondin…
We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with th…
We study a family of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ whose periods are linear forms in the zeta values $ζ(n)$. They naturally include the Beukers-Rhin-Viola integrals for $ζ(2)$ and the Ball-Rivoal linear forms in odd zeta values. We give a general integral formula for the coefficients of the linear forms and a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of the coefficients of a given parity. The main underlying result is a geometric construction of a minimal ind-object in the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ which contains all the non-trivial extensions between simple objec…
We give a natural construction of unramified over Z framed mixed Tate motives, whose periods are the multiple zeta values. Namely, for each convergent multiple zeta-value we define two boundary divisors A and B in the moduli space M_{0,n+3} of stable curves of genus zero. The corresponding multiple zeta-motive is the n-th cohomology of the pair (M_{0,n+3} -A,B).
From wall structures to closed mirror symmetry. The case of $K_{\mathbb{P}^2}$: Renormalized periods over the positive real locus, closed Gromov-Witten invariants from wall functions, and tropical enumeration
The first part of this note shows that the odd period polynomial of each Hecke cusp eigenform for full modular group produces via Rodriguez--Villegas transform ([Ro--V]) a polynomial satisfying the functional equation of zeta type and having nontrivial zeros only on the middle line of its critical strip. The second part discusses Chebyshev lambda--structure of the polynomial ring as Borger's descent data to $\bold{F}_1$ and suggests its role in possible relation of $Γ_{\bold{R}}$--factor to "real geometry over $\bold{F}_1$" (cf. also [CoCons2]).
In this note we study several conditions to be imposed on a mirror symmetry candidate to the generic multi-quasihomogeneous Calabi-Yau variety defined in the product of the quasihomogeneous projective spaces. We propose several properties for a Calabi-Yau complete intersection variety so that its period integrals can be expressed by means of quasihomogeneous weights of its mirror symmetry candidate as it has been suggested by Berglund, Candelas et altri. As a corollary, we see certain duality between the monodromy data and the Poincaré polynomials of the Euler characteristic for the pairs of o…
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values \cite{MDZF} associated to a number $K$ field and a cone $C$. In this paper we construct explicitly non-trivial examples of mixed Tate motives over the ring of integers in $K$, for a real quadratic number field $K$ and a particular cone C. The period of such a motive is a multiple Dedekind zeta values at $(s_1,s_2)=(1,2)$, associated to the pair $(K;C)$, times a nonzero element of $K$.
This survey article is the written version of two talks given at the Journées X-UPS 2019 "Périodes et transcendance" at École polytechnique. We give a gentle introduction to the study of multiple zeta values, from Euler's solution to the Basel problem to modern Galois theoretic tools. We emphasize the role of the theory of motives which conjecturally controls the structure of the algebra of multiple zeta values.
In a previous paper, the author introduced a Z-structure in quantum cohomology defined by the K-theory and the Gamma class and showed that it is compatible with mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds. Applying the quantum Lefschetz principle to the previous results, we find an explicit relationship between solutions to the quantum differential equation for toric complete intersections and the periods (or oscillatory integrals) of their mirrors. We describe in detail the mirror isomorphism of variations of Z-Hodge structure for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces (Batyrev's mirror).
We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-…
This paper discusses the overlap of the Hori-Vafa formulation of mirror symmetry with some other constructions. We focus on compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces \mathcal{M}_G = {G = 0} in weighted complex projective spaces. The Hori-Vafa formalism relates a family {\mathcal{M}_G \in WCP^{m-1}_{Q_1,...,Q_m}[s] | \sum_{i=1}^m Q_i = s} of such hypersurfaces to a single Landau-Ginzburg mirror theory. A technique suggested by Hori and Vafa allows the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the corresponding mirror periods to be determined. Some examples in which the variety \mathcal{M}_G is crepantly resol…
Let $k$ be a totally real number field. For every odd $n\geq 3$, we construct a Dedekind zeta motive in the category $\MT(k)$ of mixed Tate motives over $k$. By directly calculating its Hodge realisation, we prove that its period is a rational multiple of $π^{n[k:\Q]}ζ^*_k(1-n)$, where $ζ^*_k(1-n)$ denotes the special value of the Dedekind zeta function of $k$. We deduce that the group $\Ext^1_{\MT(k)} (\Q(0),\Q(n))$ is generated by the cohomology of a quadric relative to hyperplanes. This proves a surjectivity result for certain motivic complexes for $k$ that have been conjectured to calculat…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of the $L$-functions of critical motives. Using the theory of mirror symmetry, we will develop a method to compute the Deligne's period for a Calabi-Yau threefold in the mirror family of a one-parameter mirror pair. We will give two examples to show how this method works, and we will express the Deligne's period in terms of the classical periods of the threeform. Using this method, we will compute the Deligne's period of a Calabi-Yau threefold studied…
The predictions of the Mirror Symmetry are extended in dimensions n>3 and are proven for projective complete intersections Calabi-Yau varieties. Precisely, we prove that the total collection of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of such variety can be expressed in terms of certain invariants of a new generalization of variation of Hodge structures attached to the dual variety. To formulate the general principles of Mirror Symmetry in arbitrary dimension it is necessary to introduce the ``extended moduli space of complex structures'' M. An analog M\to H*(X,C)[n] of the classical period map is de…
For the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold and the theory of stability conditions [Bri07], there have been two mathematical aims given by physical reasoning. One is that we should define stability conditions by central charges of quintic periods [Hos04,Kon12,KonSoi13], which extend the Gamma class [KKP,Iri09,Iri11]. The other is that for well-motivated stability conditions on a derived Fukaya-type category, each stable object should be a Lagrangian [ThoYau]. We answer affirmatively to these aims with the simplest homological mirror symmetry (HMS for short) of the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold [Oka09,Fu…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
We construct the t-motivic mixed Carlitz zeta category over $\F_q(t)$ and show that it contains all the (mixed) t-motives with Carlitz-Thakur multi-zeta values as periods constructed by Anderson and Thakur. Our construction is canonical and our category is Tannakian and neutral and every object is equipped with a weight filtration whose graded pieces are Carlitz motives over $\F_q(t)$. For any finite separable extension L/\F_q(t) we show that existence of a similar category over $L$ is a consequence of a version of a conjecture of L. Taelman. Along the way we also prove the existence of the ca…
We study mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds within the framework of the Gauss-Manin system. Applying the flat coordinates to the Gauss-Manin system for the periods, we derive differential equations for the mirror map in addition to the ordinary Picard-Fuchs equations for the periods. These equations are obtained for a class of one-parameter models and a two-parameter model of Fermat type Calabi-Yau manifolds.
