This is a survey of results and conjectures on mirror symmetry phenomena in the non-Abelian Hodge theory of a curve. We start with the conjecture of Hausel-Thaddeus which claims that certain Hodge numbers of moduli spaces of flat SL(n,C) and PGL(n,C)-connections on a smooth projective algebraic curve agree. We then change our point of view in the non-Abelian Hodge theory of the curve, and concentrate on the SL(n,C) and PGL(n,C) character varieties of the curve. Here we discuss a recent conjecture of Hausel-Rodriguez-Villegas which claims, analogously to the above conjecture, that certain Hodge numbers of these character varieties also agree. We explain that for Hodge numbers of character varieties one can use arithmetic methods, and thus we end up explicitly calculating, in terms of Verlinde-type formulas, the number of representations of the fundamental group into the finite groups SL(n,F_q) and PGL(n,F_q), by using the character tables of these finite groups of Lie type. Finally we explain a conjecture which enhances the previous result, and gives a simple formula for the mixed Hodge polynomials, and in particular for the Poincare polynomials of these character varieties, and detail the relationship to results of Hitchin, Gothen, Garsia-Haiman and Earl-Kirwan. One consequence of this conjecture is a curious Poincare duality type of symmetry, which leads to a conjecture, similar to Faber's conjecture on the moduli space of curves, about a strong Hard Lefschetz theorem for the character variety, which can be considered as a generalization of both the Alvis-Curtis duality in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type and a recent result of the author on the quaternionic geometry of matroids.
The first part of this paper is a survey of mathematical results on mirror symmetry phenomena between Hitchin systems for Langlands dual groups. The second part introduces and discusses multiplicity algebras of the Hitchin system on Lagrangians, and considers corresponding conjectural structures on their mirror.
We construct infinitely many non-isotrivial families of abelian varieties over given four punctured projective lines. These families lead to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation. Finally, based on a recent paper by Lin-Sheng-Wang, we prove a complete characterization for the locus of motivic Higgs bundles in the moduli space as fixed points of an ``additive'' self-map. This is a note based on the lecture given by the second named author on 04 Nov. 2022 at Tsinghua University.
Constructing families of abelian varieties of $\text{GL}_2$-type over $4$-punctured complex projective line via $p$-adic Hodge theory and Langlands correspondence and application to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation
By normalizing the space of commuting pairs of elements in a reductive Lie group G, and the corresponding space for the Langlands dual group, we construct pairs of hyperkahler orbifolds which satisfy the conditions to be mirror partners in the sense of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow. The same holds true for commuting quadruples in a compact Lie group. The Hodge numbers of the mirror partners, or more precisely their orbifold E-polynomials, are shown to agree, as predicted by mirror symmetry. These polynomials are explicitly calculated when G is a quotient of SL(n).
We show that (quantum) D-modules of Givental type on affine flag varieties are transformed to D-modules of Beilinson-Drinfeld type on $n$-reduced Sato Grassmannians via affine Miura transformation.
We prove the isogeny property for special fibres of integral canonical models of compact Shimura varieties of $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n^{\dbR}$ type. The approach used also shows that many crystalline cycles on abelian varieties over finite fields which are specializations of Hodge cycles, are algebraic. These two results have many applications. First, we prove a variant of the conditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture for these special fibres. Second, for certain isogeny sets we prove a variant of the unconditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture (like for many basic loci). Third, we prov…
For any Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$ and a lisse sheaf on it, we prove a formula, conjectured by Kottwitz \cite{Kottwitz90}, for the Lefschetz number of an arbitrary Frobenius-twisted Hecke correspondence acting on the compactly supported étale cohomology and verify another conjecture of Kottwitz \cite{Kottwitz90} on the stabilization of that formula. The main ingredients of our proof of the formula are a recent work of Kisin \cite{Kisin17} on Langlands-Rapoport conjecture and the theory of Galois gerbs developed by Langlands and Rapoport \cite{LR87}. Es…
We prove in full generality the mirror duality conjecture for string-theoretic Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The proof is based on properties of intersection cohomology
We study the moduli spaces of flat SL(r)- and PGL(r)-connections, or equivalently, Higgs bundles, on an algebraic curve. These spaces are noncompact Calabi-Yau orbifolds; we show that they can be regarded as mirror partners in two different senses. First, they satisfy the requirements laid down by Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ), in a suitably general sense involving a B-field or flat unitary gerbe. To show this, we use their hyperkahler structures and Hitchin's integrable systems. Second, their Hodge numbers, again in a suitably general sense, are equal. These spaces provide significant evidence …
We discuss the Hodge theory of algebraic non-commutative spaces and analyze how this theory interacts with the Calabi-Yau condition and with mirror symmetry. We develop an abstract theory of non-commutative Hodge structures, investigate existence and variations, and propose explicit construction and classification techniques. We study the main examples of non-commutative Hodge structures coming from a symplectic or a complex geometry possibly twisted by a potential. We study the interactions of the new Hodge theoretic invariants with mirror symmetry and derive non-commutative analogues of some…
Starting from the Kähler moduli space of the rigid orbifold Z=E^3/\mathbb{Z}_3 one would expect for the cohomology of the generalized mirror to be a Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type (1,9,9,1). We show that such a structure arises in a natural way from rational Hodge structures on Λ^3 \mathbb{K}^6, \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Q}[ω], where ωis a primitive third root of unity. We do not try to identify an underlying geometry, but we show how special geometry arises in our abstract construction. We also show how such Hodge structure can be recovered as a polarized substructure of a bigger Hodge structure…
Topological-Holomorphic ${\mathcal N} =4$ Gauge Theory: From Langlands Duality of Holomorphic Invariants to Mirror Symmetry of Quasi-topological Strings
The geometric Langlands correspondence has been interpreted as the mirror symmetry of the Hitchin fibrations for two dual reductive groups. This mirror symmetry, in turn, reduces to T-duality on the generic Hitchin fibers, which are smooth tori. In this paper we study what happens when the Hitchin fibers on the B-model side develop orbifold singularities. These singularities correspond to local systems with finite groups of automorphisms. In the classical Langlands Program local systems of this type are called endoscopic. They play an important role in the theory of automorphic representations…
We consider the conjectures from the paper by Katzarkov, Kontsevich, and Pantev about Landau-Ginzburg Hodge numbers associated to tamely compactifiable Landau-Ginzburg models. We test these conjectures in case of dimension two, verifying some and giving a counterexample to the other.
We express total set of rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces via periods of variations of semi-infinite Hodge structure associated with their mirror partners.
Mirrors $X^{\vee}$ of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$ in weighted projective spaces ${\Bbb P}(w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ can be obtained as Calabi-Yau compactifications of non-degenerate affine toric hypersurfaces defined by Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is the lattice simplex spanned by $d+1$ lattice vectors $v_i$ satisfying the relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. In this paper, we compute the stringy $E$-function of mirrors $X^\vee$ and compare it with the Vafa's orbifold $E$-function of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$. As a result, we prove the equalities of Hodge numbers …
This proceedings note introduces aspects of the authors' work relating mirror symmetry and integral variations of Hodge structure. The emphasis is on their classification of the integral variations of Hodge structure which can underly families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere with b^3 = 4, or equivalently h^{2,1} = 1, and the related issues of geometric realization of these variations. The presentation parallels that of the first author's talk at the BIRS workshop.
We prove a representation-theoretic version of Borisov-Batyrev mirror symmetry, and use it to construct infinitely many new pairs of orbifolds with mirror Hodge diamonds, with respect to the usual Hodge structure on singular complex cohomology. We conjecture that the corresponding orbifold Hodge diamonds are also mirror. When $X$ is the Fermat quintic in $¶^4$, and $\tilde{X}^*$ is a $\Sym_5$-equivariant, toric resolution of its mirror $X^*$, we deduce that for any subgroup $Γ$ of the alternating group $A_5$, the $Γ$-Hilbert schemes $Γ$-$\Hilb(X)$ and $Γ$-$\Hilb(\tilde{X}^*)$ are smooth Calabi…
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
For any Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$ and automorphic lisse sheaf on it, we prove a formula, conjectured by Kottwitz \cite{Kottwitz90}, for the Lefschetz numbers of Frobenius-twisted Hecke correspondences acting on the compactly supported étale cohomology. Our proof is an adaptation of the arguments of Langlands and Rapoport \cite{LR87} of deriving the Kottwitz's formula from their conjectural description of the set of mod-$p$ points of Shimura variety (Langlands-Rapoport conjecture), which replaces their Galois gerb theoretic arguments by more geometric …
Associativity of the quantum product ensures flatness of the Dubrovin connection and is the basis for Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We use ring and module structure on cohomology pertaining to a Lagrangian submanifold to define an extension of the A-model Variation of mixed Hodge structure that matches the predictions from extended mirror symmetry. Our construction makes contact with axioms for open Gromov-Witten theory recently proposed by Solomon-Tukachinsky.
The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in partic…
Using the mirror theorem [CCIT15], we give a Landau-Ginzburg mirror description for the big equivariant quantum cohomology of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. More precisely, we prove that the big equivariant quantum D-module of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack is isomorphic to the Saito structure associated to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. We give a GKZ-style presentation of the quantum D-module, and a combinatorial description of quantum cohomology as a quantum Stanley-Reisner ring. We establish the convergence of the mirror isomorphism and of quantum cohomology in the big and equivariant …
We correct the definitions and descriptions of the integral structures in [U14]. The previous flat basis in [ibid] is characterized by the Frobenius solutions and integral in the first approximation by mean of the graded quotients of monodromy filtration, but not integral in the strict sense. In this article, we use the integral structure of Iritani in [I11] for A-model. Using this precise version, we study open mirror symmetry for quintic threefolds through log mixed Hodge theory, especially the recent result on Neron models for admissible normal functions with non-torsion extensions in the j…
Motivated by geometric Langlands, we initiate a program to study the mirror symmetry between nilpotent orbit closures of a semisimple Lie algebra and those of its Langlands dual. The most interesting case is $B_n$ via $C_n$. Classically, there is a famous Springer duality between special orbits. Therefore, it is natural to speculate that the mirror symmetry we seek may coincide with Springer duality in the context of special orbits. Unfortunately, such a naive statement fails. To remedy the situation, we propose a conjecture which asserts the mirror symmetry for certain parabolic/induced cover…
We study the representation of a finite group acting on the cohomology of a non-degenerate, invariant hypersurface of a projective toric variety. We deduce an explicit description of the representation when the toric variety has at worst quotient singularities. As an application, we conjecture a representation-theoretic version of Batyrev and Borisov's mirror symmetry between pairs of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and prove it when the hypersurfaces are both smooth or have dimension at most 3. An interesting consequence is the existence of pairs of Calabi-Yau orbifolds whose Hodge diamonds are mir…
We study in detail mirror symmetry for the quartic K3 surface in P3 and the mirror family obtained by the orbifold construction. As explained by Aspinwall and Morrison, mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces can be entirely described in terms of Hodge structures. (1) We give an explicit computation of the Hodge structures and period maps for these families of K3 surfaces. (2) We identify a mirror map, i.e. an isomorphism between the complex and symplectic deformation parameters, and explicit isomorphisms between the Hodge structures at these points. (3) We show compatibility of our mirror map with th…
We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the fami…
We study the Hodge numbers of Landau-Ginzburg models as defined by Katzarkov, Kontsevich and Pantev. First we show that these numbers can be computed using ordinary mixed Hodge theory, then we give a concrete recipe for computing these numbers for the Landau-Ginzburg mirrors of Fano threefolds. We finish by proving that for a crepant resolution of a Gorenstein toric Fano threefold $X$ there is a natural LG mirror $(Y,\mathsf{w})$ so that $h^{p,q}(X) = f^{3-q,p}(Y,\mathsf{w})$.
We prove three new results about the global Springer action defined in \cite{GSI}. The first one determines the support of the perverse cohomology sheaves of the parabolic Hitchin complex, which serves as a technical tool for the next results. The second one (the Endoscopic Decomposition Theorem) links certain direct summands of the parabolic Hitchin complex of $G$ to the endoscopic groups of $G$. This result generalizes Ngô's geometric stabilization of the trace formula in \cite{NgoFL}. The third result links the stable parts of the parabolic Hitchin complexes for Langlands dual groups, and e…
We study the mixed Hodge theoretic aspects of the B-model side of local mirror symmetry. Our main objectives are to define an analogue of the Yukawa coupling in terms of the variations of the mixed Hodge structures and to study its properties. We also describe a local version of Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa's holomorphic anomaly equation.
The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau-Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau-Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main results shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers d…
Rapoport-Zink spaces, or more generally local Shimura varieties, are expected to provide geometric realization of the local Langlands correspondence via their $l$-adic cohomology. Along this line is a conjecture by Harris and Viehmann, which roughly says that when the underlying local Shimura datum is not basic, the $l$-adic cohomology of the local Shimura variety is parabolically induced. We verify this conjecture for Rapoport-Zink spaces which are Hodge type and Hodge-Newton reducible. The main strategy is to embed such a Rapoport-Zink space into an appropriate space of EL type, for which th…
Borcea-Voisin threefolds provided some of the first examples of mirror pairs in the Hodge-theoretic sense, but their mirror symmetry at the quantum level have not previously been shown. We prove a Givental-style quantum mirror theorem for certain Borcea-Voisin threefolds: by means of certain birational models, we show that their Gromov-Witten J-functions are related by a mirror map to solutions of the multi-parameter Picard-Fuchs equations coming from the variation of Hodge structures of their mirror partners.
In this paper, we present an application of mirror symmetry to arithmetic geometry. The main result is the computation of the period of a mixed Hodge structure, which lends evidence to its expected motivic origin. More precisely, given a mirror pair $(M,W)$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the prepotential of the complexified Kahler moduli space of $M$ admits an expansion with a constant term that is frequently of the form $$-3\, χ(M) \,ζ(3)/(2 πi)^3+r,$$ where $r \in \mathbb{Q}$ and $χ(M)$ is the Euler characteristic of $M$. We focus on the mirror pairs for which the deformation space of the mirror …
Calabi-Yau manifolds are important objects in algebraic geometry and in theoretical physics. A hypothesis of mirror symmetry is that Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension 3 come in pairs, with the Hodge numbers of one manifold mirroring the Hodge numbers of the other. In this thesis, Calabi-Yau manifolds are constructed by smoothing Stanley-Reisner schemes of triangulations of 3-spheres. The triangulations of the 3-sphere with 7 or 8 vertices have been constructed and classified by Grünbaum and Sreedharan (1967). In this thesis we characterize the Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained from the triangulati…
A compact complex manifold is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic if there exists an entire curve on it. Using mirror symmetry we establish that there are (possibly singular) elliptic or rational curves on any Calabi-Yau manifold $X$, whose mirror dual $\check X$ exists and is not "Hodge degenerate", therefore proving that $X$ is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic. We are not aware of any higher dimensional simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds that satisfy the "Hodge degenerate" condition.
When combined with mirror symmetry, the A-model approach to quantization leads to a fairly simple and tractable problem. The most interesting part of the problem then becomes finding the mirror of the coisotropic brane. We illustrate how it can be addressed in a number of interesting examples related to representation theory and gauge theory, in which mirror geometry is naturally associated with the Langlands dual group. Hyperholomorphic sheaves and (B,B,B) branes play an important role in the B-model approach to quantization.
We investigate Hodge-theoretic properties of Calabi-Yau complete intersections $V$ of $r$ semi-ample divisors in $d$-dimensional toric Fano varieties having at most Gorenstein singularities. Our main purpose is to show that the combinatorial duality proposed by second author agrees with the duality for Hodge numbers predicted by mirror symmetry. It is expected that the complete verification of mirror symmetry predictions for singular Calabi-Yau varieties $V$ of arbitrary dimension demands considerations of so called {\em string-theoretic Hodge numbers} $h^{p,q}_{\rm st}(V)$. We restrict oursel…
The paper contains a proof that elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau manifold is a Jacobi form, finds in which dimensions the elliptic genus is determined by the Hodge numbers and shows that elliptic genera of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety and its mirror coincide up to sign. The proof of the mirror property is based on the extension of elliptic genus to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties with Gorenstein singularities.
We propose a new approach to the Mirror Symmetry Conjecture in a form suitable to possibly non-Kähler compact complex manifolds whose canonical bundle is trivial. We apply our methods by proving that the Iwasawa manifold $X$, a well-known non-Kähler compact complex manifold of dimension $3$, is its own mirror dual to the extent that its Gauduchon cone, replacing the classical Kähler cone that is empty in this case, corresponds to what we call the local universal family of essential deformations of $X$. These are obtained by removing from the Kuranishi family the two "superfluous" dimensions of…
We identify the twisted sectors of a compact simplicial toric variety. We do the same for a generic nondegenerate Calabi-Yau hypersurface of an $n$-dimensional simplicial Fano toric variety and then explicitly compute $h^{1,1}_{orb}$ and $h^{n-2,1}_{orb}$ for the hypersurface. We give applications to the orbifold string theory conjecture and orbifold mirror symmetry.
We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
In this paper, we describe recent work towards the mirror P=W conjecture, which relates the weight filtration on a cohomology of a log Calabi--Yau manifold to the perverse Leray filtration on the cohomology of the homological mirror dual log Calabi--Yau manifold, taken with respect to the affinization map. This conjecture extends the classical relationship between Hodge numbers of mirror dual compact Calabi--Yau manifolds, incorporating tools and ideas which appear in the fascinating and groundbreaking works of de Cataldo, Hausel, and Migliorini, and de Cataldo and Migliorini. We give a broad …
For a Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$, the Newton stratification on its special fiber at $p$ is a stratification defined in terms of the isomorphism class of the Dieudonne module of parameterized abelian varieties endowed with a certain fixed set of Frobenius-invariant crystalline cycles ("$F$-isocrystal with $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$-structure"). There has been a conjectural group-theoretic description of the F-isocrystals that are expected to show up in the special fiber. We confirm this conjecture by two different methods. More precisely, for any $F$-isocrystal…
