We show that the Fourier-Laplace transform of a regular holonomic module over the Weyl algebra of one variable, which generically underlies a variation of polarized Hodge structure, underlies itself an integrable variation of polarized twistor structure.
We show that the limit, by rescaling, of the `new supersymmetric index' attached to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a polarized variation of Hodge structure on a punctured affine line is equal to the spectral polynomial attached to the same object. We also extend the definition by Deligne of a Hodge filtration on the de Rham cohomology of a exponentially twisted polarized variation of complex Hodge structure and prove a E_1 degeneration property for it.
Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau threefold. A conifold transition first contracts $X$ along disjoint rational curves with normal bundles of type $(-1,-1)$, and then smooth the resulting singular complex space $\bar{X}$ to a new compact complex manifold $Y$. Such $Y$ is called a Clemens manifold and can be non-Kähler. We prove that any small smoothing $Y$ of $\bar{X}$ satisfies $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma. We also show that the resulting pure Hodge structure of weight three on $H^3(Y)$ is polarized by the cup product. These results answer some questions of R. Friedman.
We prove that a projective vertical exact log smooth morphism of fs log analytic spaces with a base of log rank one yields polarized log Hodge structures in the canonical way.
This article gives a survey of recent results on a generalization of the notion of a Hodge structure. The main example is related to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a variation of polarizable Hodge structure on the punctured affine line, like the Gauss-Manin systems of a proper or tame algebraic function on a smooth quasi-projective variety. Variations of non-commutative Hodge structures often occur on the tangent bundle of Frobenius manifolds, giving rise to a tt* geometry.
Around 1970 Griffiths introduced the moduli of polarized Hodge structures/the period domain $D$ and described a dream to enlarge $D$ to a moduli space of degenerating polarized Hodge structures. Since in general $D$ is not a Hermitian symmetric domain, he asked for the existence of a certain automorphic cohomology theory for $D$, generalizing the usual notion of automorphic forms on symmetric Hermitian domains. Since then there have been many efforts in the first part of Griffith's dream but the second part still lives in darkness. The objective of the present text is two-folded. First, we giv…
A systematic study of the contributions at infinity for the cohomology of variations of polarized Hodge structures over quasicompact Kähler manifolds. Several isomorphisms between different cohomologies given.
In this paper we extend the construction of the canonical polarized variation of Hodge structures over tube domain considered by B. Gross in \cite{G} to bounded symmetric domain and introduce a series of invariants of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures, which we call characteristic subvarieties. We prove that the characteristic subvariety of the canonical polarized variations of Hodge structures over irreducible bounded symmetric domains are identified with the characteristic bundles defined by N. Mok in \cite{M}. We verified the generating property of B. Gross for all irreducible bou…
We construct toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We construct them as the spaces of nilpotent orbits.
We continue our work on variations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures by defining analogs of the harmonic metric equations for filtered bundles and proving a precise analog of Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem for 1-parameter degenerations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure.
We announce the construction of toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We include an application to the analyticity of zero loci of some functions.
In this paper, we give an expression and some estimates of the curvature tensor of the Hodge metric over the moduli space of a polarized Calabi-Yau threefold. The symmetricity of the Yukawa coupling is also studied. In the last section of this paper, an extra restriction of the limiting Hodge structure for the degeneration of Calabi-Yau threefolds is given.
We construct a polarized Hodge structure on the primitive part of Chen and Ruan's orbifold cohomology $H_{orb}^k(X)$ for projective $SL$-orbifolds $X$ satisfying a ``Hard Lefschetz Condition''. Furthermore, the total cohomology $H_{orb}^{*,*}(X)$ forms a mixed Hodge structure that is polarized by every element of the Kähler cone of $X$. Using results of Cattani-Kaplan-Schmid this implies the existence of an abstract polarized variation of Hodge structure on the complexified Kähler cone of $X$. This construction should be considered as the analogue of the abstract polarized variation of Hodge s…
We give a complex polarized variation of Hodge structure over a compact K"ahler manifold $M$ which controls all finite-dimensional complex polarized variations of Hodge structure over $M$ and their tensor relations. As a corollary, we obtain the cohomology algebra with values in a local system admitting multiplicative Hodge structures.
The space $D$ of Hodge structures on a fixed polarized lattice is known as Griffiths period domain and its quotient by the isometry group of the lattice is the moduli of polarized Hodge structures of a fixed type. When $D$ is a Hermition symmetric domain then we have automorphic forms on $D$, which according to Baily-Borel theorem, they give an algebraic structure to the mentioned moduli space. In this article we slightly modify this picture by considering the space $U$ of polarized lattices in a fixed complex vector space with a fixed Hodge filtration and polarization. It turns out that the i…
We define a map $\mathcal{P}_M$ attached to any polarized Hodge module $M$ such that the restriction of $\mathcal{P}_M$ to a locus on which $M$ is a variation of Hodge structures induces the usual period integral pairing for this variation of Hodge structures. In the case that $M$ is the minimal extension of a simple polarized variation of Hodge structures $V$, we show that the homotopy image of $\mathcal{P}_M$ is the minimal extension of the graph morphism of the usual period integral map for $V$.
This text is an expository survey on the interplay between polarized variation of Hodge structure (PVHS) and the formalism of Hodge modules. We specifically review the extensions of a PVMHS over their singularities and its relation to mixed Hodge modules.
By the same method introduced in [9], we calculate the Laplace transform of the celebrated cut-and-join equation of Mariño-Vafa formula discovered by C. Liu, K. Liu and J. Zhou [17]. Then, we study the applications of the polynomial identity (1) obtained in theorem 1.1 of this paper. We show the proof Bouchard-Mariño conjecture for C^3 which was given by L. Chen [5] Firstly. Subsequently, we will present how to obtain series Hodge integral identities from this polynomial identity (1). In particular, the main result in [9] is one of special case in such series of Hodge integral identities. At l…
We show that if the Stokes matrix of a connection with a pole of order two and no ramification gives rise, when added to its adjoint, to a positive semi-definite Hermitian form, then the associated integrable twistor structure (or TERP structure, or non-commutative Hodge structure) is pure and polarized.
By analyzing the local and infinitesimal behavior of degenerating polarized variations of Hodge structure the notion of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure at infinity is introduced. It is shown that all such structures can be integrated to polarized variations of Hodge structure and that, conversely, all are limits of infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure (IVHS) at finite points. As an illustration of the rich information encoded in this new structure, some instances of the maximal dimension problem for this type of infinitesimal variation are presented and contrasted with the "c…
We compute the behaviour of Hodge data under additive middle convolution for irreducible variations of polarized complex Hodge structures on punctured complex affine lines.
We prove the equidistribution of the Hodge locus for certain non-isotrivial, polarized variations of Hodge structure of weight $2$ with $h^{2,0}=1$ over complex, quasi-projective curves. Given some norm condition, we also give an asymptotic on the growth of the Hodge locus. In particular, this implies the equidistribution of elliptic fibrations in quasi-polarized, non-isotrivial families of $K3$ surfaces.
Assuming suitable convergence properties for the Gromov-Witten potential of a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ one may construct a polarized variation of Hodge structure over the complexified Kähler cone of $X$. In this paper we show that, in the case of fourfolds, there is a correspondence between ``quantum potentials'' and polarized variations of Hodge structures that degenerate to a maximally unipotent boundary point. Under this correspondence, the WDVV equations are seen to be equivalent to the Griffiths' trasversality property of a variation of Hodge structure.
This paper was motivated by the following question: Recall that for a smooth projective variety X whose polarized Hodge structure on H^n(X,Q)_{prim} leads to a period point ...
An isolated hypersurface singularity comes equipped with many different pairings on different spaces, the intersection form and the Seifert form on the Milnor lattice, a polarizing form for a mixed Hodge structure on a dual space, and a flat pairing on the cohomology bundle. This paper describes them and their relations systematically in an abstract setting. We expect applications also in other areas than singularity theory. A good part of the paper is elementary, but not well known: the classification of irreducible Seifert form pairs, the polarizing form on the generalized eigenspace with ei…
The goal of the present paper is two-fold. First, we present a classification of algebraic K3 surfaces polarized by the lattice H+E_8+E_7. Key ingredients for this classification are: a normal form for these lattice polarized K3 surfaces, a coarse moduli space and an explicit description of the inverse period map in terms of Siegel modular forms. Second, we give explicit formulas for a Hodge correspondence that relates these K3 surfaces to principally polarized abelian surfaces. The Hodge correspondence in question underlies a geometric two-isogeny of K3 surfaces.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^{n+1} \to \mathbb{C}$ be a germ of hypersurface with isolated singularity. One can associate to $f$ a polarized variation of mixed Hodge structure $\mathcal{H}$ over the punctured disc, where the Hodge filtration is the limit Hodge filtration of W. Schmid and J. Steenbrink. By the work of M. Saito and P. Deligne the VMHS associated to cohomologies of the fibers of $f$ can be extended over the degenerate point $0$ of disc. The new fiber obtained in this way is isomorphic to the module of relative differentials of $f$ denoted $Ω_f$. A mixed Hodge structure can be defined on $Ω_…
The Kuga-Satake construction associates to a K3 type polarized weight 2 Hodge structure H an abelian variety A such that H is a quotient Hodge structure of H^2(A). The first step is to consider the Clifford algebra of H. It turns out that it is endowed with a weight 2 Hodge structure compatible with the algebra structure. We show more generally that a weight 2 polarized Hodge structure which carries a compatible (unitary, associative) algebra structure is a quotient of the H^2 of an abelian variety.
We classify the possible Mumford-Tate groups of polarizable rational Hodge structures. Along the way we deduce a polarized Hodge-theoretic analogue of a conjectural property of motivic Galois groups suggested by Serre.
It is proved that the non-rationality of a generic cubic fourfold follows from a conjecture on the non-decomposability in the direct sum of non-trivial polarized Hodge structures of the polarized Hodge structure on transcendental cycles on a projective surface.
Period domains, the classifying spaces for (pure, polarized) Hodge structures, and more generally Mumford-Tate domains, arise as open $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in flag varieties $G/P$. We investigate Hodge--theoretic aspects of the geometry and representation theory associated with these flag varieties. In particular, we relate the Griffiths--Yukawa coupling to the variety of lines on $G/P$ (under a minimal homogeneous embedding), construct a large class of polarized $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in $G/P$, and compute the associated Hodge--theoretic boundary components. An emphasis is placed through…
Hodge representations were introduced by Green-Griffiths-Kerr to classify the Hodge groups of polarized Hodge structures, and the corresponding Mumford-Tate subdomains of a period domain. The purpose of this article is to provide an exposition of how, given a fixed period domain $\mathcal{D}$, to enumerate the Hodge representations corresponding to Mumford-Tate subdomains $D \subset \mathcal{D}$. After reviewing the well-known classical cases that $\mathcal{D}$ is Hermitian symmetric (weight $n=1$, and weight $n=2$ with $p_g = h^{2,0}=1$), we illustrate this in the case that $\mathcal{D}$ is t…
We construct a hermitian metric on the classifying spaces of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures and prove analogs of the strong distance estimate between an admissible period map and the approximating nilpotent orbit. We also consider the asymptotic behavior of the biextension metric, the norm estimates and the asymptotics of the reduced limit Hodge filtration.
We prove two results regarding Hodge structures appearing in the cohomology of complex tori. First, we prove that if a polarizable Hodge structure appears in the cohomology of a complex torus $T$, it appears in the cohomology of an abelian variety isomorphic to a subquotient of $T$. Second, we prove a universality result for the Kuga-Satake construction applied to Hodge structures of $K3$ type that might not be polarized.
We construct an enlargement of the classifying space of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients, by adding mixed Hodge theoretic version of SL(2)-orbits. This space has a real analytic structure and a log structure with sign. The SL(2)-orbit theorem in several variables for mixed Hodge structures can be understood naturally with this space.
In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level $m$ structure is also injective.
We exhibit a direct correspondence between the potential defining the H^{1,1} small quantum module structure on the cohomology of a Calabi-Yau manifold and the asymptotic data of the A-model variation of Hodge structure. This is done in the abstract context of polarized variations of Hodge structure and Frobenius modules.
We consider arbitrary polarized variations of Hodge structure of weight two and $h^{2,0}=1$ over a non--singular complex algebraic curve $S$ and analyze the boundary behaviour of the associated Kudla--Millson theta series using Schmid's theorems on degenerations of Hodge structure. This allows us to prove that this theta series is always integrable over $S$ and to describe explicitly the non-holomorphic part of the Kudla--Millson generating series in terms of the mixed Hodge structures at infinity.
We establish an unexpected relation among the Weil-Petersson metric, the generalized Hodge metrics and the BCOV torsion. Using this relation, we prove that certain kind of moduli spaces of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds do not admit complete subvarieties. That is, there is no complete family for certain class of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also give an estimate of the complex Hessian of the BCOV torsion using the relation. After establishing a degenerate version of the Schwarz Lemma of Yau, we prove that the complex Hessian of the BCOV torsion is bounded by the Poincaré metric.
We extend the Ax-Schanuel theorem recently proven for Shimura varieties by Mok-Pila-Tsimerman to all varieties supporting a pure polarized integral variation of Hodge structures. The essential new ingredient is a volume bound on Griffiths transverse subvarieties of period domains.
We prove a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective pair $(X,D)$ such that $X\setminus D$ supports a complex polarized variation of Hodge structures. This can be viewed as a Nevanlinna theoretic analogue of the Arakelov inequalities for variations of Hodge structures due to Deligne, Peters and Jost-Zuo. As an application, we obtain in this context a criterion of hyperbolicity that we use to derive a vast generalization of a well-known hyperbolicity result of Nadel. The first ingredient of our proof is a Second Main Theorem type inequality for any log-smooth projective …
In this paper we prove the following results: $1)$ We show that any arithmetic quotient of a homogeneous space admits a natural real semi-algebraic structure for which its Hecke correspondences are semi-algebraic. A particularly important example is given by Hodge varieties, which parametrize pure polarized integral Hodge structures. $2)$ We prove that the period map associated to any pure polarized variation of integral Hodge structures $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$ is definable with respect to an o-minimal structure on the relevant Hodge variety induced by the…
Looking at the finite étale congruence covers $X(p)$ of a complex algebraic variety $X$ equipped with a variation of integral polarized Hodge structures whose period map is quasi-finite, we show that both the minimal gonality among all curves contained in $X(p)$ and the minimal volume among all subvarieties of $X(p)$ tend to infinity with $p$. This applies for example to Shimura varieties, moduli spaces of curves, moduli spaces of abelian varieties, moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau varieties, and can be made effective in many cases. The proof goes roughly as follows. We first prove a generalization…
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a morphism of complex manifolds. Suppose that $X$ is a Kähler manifold. Let $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ be a regular polarized pure twistor $\mathcal{D}$-module of weight $w$ on $X$ whose support is proper over $Y$. We prove the Hard Lefschetz Theorem for the push-forward of $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ by $f$. As one of the key steps, we obtain the twistor version of a theorem of Kashiwara and Kawai about the Hodge structure on the intersection complex of polarized variation of Hodge structure.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface, $Σ$ a finite set of points and $M = X\setminus Σ$. We study the $L^2$ cohomology of a polarized complex variation of Hodge structure on a Galois covering of the Riemann surface of finite type $M$. In this article we treat the case when the covering comes from a branched covering of $X$, and where $M$ is endowed with a metric asymptotic to a Poincaré metric. We prove that after tensorisation with the algebra of affiliated operators, the $L^2$ cohomology admits a pure Hodge structure.
Insprired by the work of C. Simpson, it is shown that every variation of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure defined over Q gives rise to a natural Higgs field on the underlying vector bundle. In the context of Mirror Symmetry it is then shown that these Higgs fields share an intimate relationship with Quantum Cohomology.
We extend the Kuga-Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties, associated to polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.
We prove the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles on a principally polarized complex abelian variety whose minimal class is algebraic. In particular, any product of Jacobians of smooth projective curves over the complex numbers satisfies the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles. The main ingredient is a lift of the Fourier transform to integral Chow groups. Similarly, we prove the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on the Jacobian of a proper curve of compact type over the separable closure of a finitely generated field. Furthermore, abelian varieties satisfying such a conjecture …
We complete the construction of the fundamental diagram of various partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. The diagram includes the space of nilpotent orbits, the space of SL(2)-orbits, and the space of Borel--Serre orbits. We give amplifications of this fundamental diagram, and amplify the relations of these spaces. We describe how this work is useful to understand asymptotic behaviors of Beilinson regulators and of local height parings in degeneration. We discuss "mild degenerations" in which regulators converge.
In this paper the authors consider a certain toroidal compactification of the moduli space of degenerations of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with (canonical) level structure. Using Hodge theory we give a proof that a degenerate abelian surface associated to a corank 1 boundary point is (almost) completely determined by the boundary point. The crucial ingredient in the proof is the Local Invariant Cycle theorem which relates the variation of Hodge structure to the mixed Hodge structure on the singular surface.
We consider the residual B-model variation of Hodge structure of Iritani defined by a family of toric Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces over a punctured disk $D \setminus \{ 0\}$. It is naturally extended to a logarithmic variation of polarized Hodge structure of Kato--Usui on the whole disk $D$. By restricting it to the origin, we obtain a polarized logarithmic Hodge structure (PLH) on the standard log point. In this paper, we describe the PLH in terms of the integral affine structure of the dual intersection complex of the toric degeneration in the Gross--Siebert program.
