In this work, we prove a compactness theorem on the space of all Hamiltonian stationay Lagrangian submanifolds in a compact symplectic manifold with uniform bounds on area and total extrinsic curvature.
We prove that the moduli space of gauge equivalence classes of symplectic vortices with uniformly bounded energy in a compact Hamiltonian manifold admits a Gromov compactification by polystable vortices. This extends results of Mundet i Riera and Tian for circle actions to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. Our argument relies on an a priori estimate for vortices that allows us to apply techniques used by McDuff and Salamon in their proof of Gromov compactness for pseudoholomorphic curves. As an intermediate result we prove a removable singularity theorem for vortices.
We prove a version of Gromov's compactness theorem for pseudo-holomorphic curves which holds locally in the target symplectic manifold. This result applies to sequences of curves with an unbounded number of free boundary components, and in families of degenerating target manifolds which have unbounded geometry (e.g. no uniform energy threshold). Core elements of the proof regard curves as submanifolds (rather than maps) and then adapt methods from the theory of minimal surfaces.
We extend results by Mirzakhani in [Mir07] to moduli spaces of Hurwitz covers. In particular we obtain equations relating Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of Hurwitz covers, Hurwitz numbers and certain Hurwitz cycles on Deligne-Mumford space related to those Riemann surfaces admitting Hurwitz covers of a specified branching profile. We state the precise orbifold structure of the moduli space of Hurwitz covers by applying ideas and results from Robbin-Salamon in arXiv:math/0407090. Furthermore we prove compactness of the involved moduli spaces by applying SFT-compactness in the Cieliebak…
In this note, we reformulate Donaldson's construction as a compactness result. Approximately holomorphic sections accumulate to "limit holomorphic sections" and uniform transversality properties of the approximately holomorphic sections correspond to transversality properties of their limits.
We study holomorphic spheres in certain symplectic cobordisms and derive information about periodic Reeb orbits in the concave end of these cobordisms from the non-compactness of the relevant moduli spaces. We use this to confirm the strong Weinstein conjecture (predicting the existence of null-homologous Reeb links) for various higher-dimensional contact manifolds, including contact type hypersurfaces in subcritical Stein manifolds and in some cotangent bundles. The quantitative character of this result leads to the definition of a symplectic capacity.
For each compact almost Kahler manifold $(X,\om,J)$ and an element A of $H_2(X;Z)$, we describe a closed subspace $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(X,A;J)$ of the moduli space $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}(X,A;J)$ of stable J-holomorphic genus-one maps such that $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(X,A;J)$ contains all stable maps with smooth domains. If $(P^n,\om,J_0)$ is the standard complex projective space, $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}^0(P^n,A;J_0)$ is an irreducible component of $\ov{\frak M}_{1,k}(P^n,A;J_0)$. We also show that if an almost complex structure $J$ on $P^n$ is sufficiently close to J_0, the structure of the space $\ov{…
In a previous paper [FT1], for any logarithmic symplectic pair (X,D) of a symplectic manifold X and a simple normal crossings symplectic divisor D, we introduced the notion of log pseudo-holomorphic curve and proved a compactness theorem for the moduli spaces of stable log curves. In this paper, we introduce a natural set up for studying the deformation theory of log (and relative) curves. As a result, we obtain a logarithmic analog of the space of Ruan-Tian perturbations for these moduli spaces. For a generic compatible pair of an almost complex structure and a log perturbation term, we prove…
In this paper, we generalize construction of Seidel's long exact sequence of Lagrangian Floer cohomology to that of compact Lagrangian submanifolds with vanishing Malsov class on general Calabi-Yau manifolds. We use the framework of anchored Lagrangian submanifolds developed in \cite{fooo:anchor} and some compactness theorem of \emph{smooth} $J$-holomorphic sections of Lefschetz Hamiltonian fibration for a generic choice of $J$. The proof of the latter compactness theorem involves a study of proper pseudoholomorphic curves in the setting of noncompact symplectic manifolds with cylindrical ends…
Let $(X, ω)$ be a compact symplectic manifold and $L$ be a Lagrangian submanifold. Suppose $(X, L)$ has a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action with moment map $μ$. Take an invariant $ω$-compatible almost complex structure, we consider tuples $(C, P, A, φ)$ where $C$ is a smooth bordered Riemann surface of fixed topological type, $P\to C$ is an $S^1$-principal bundle, $A$ is a connection on $P$ and $φ$ is a section of $P\times_{S^1} X$ satisfying $\ov\partial_A φ=0,\ ι_νF_A+ μ(φ)=c$ with boundary condition $φ(\partial C) \subset P \times_{S^1} L$. Here $F_A$ is the curvature of $A$ and $ν$ is a volume form…
Symplectic Field Theory studies J-holomorphic curves in almost complex manifolds with cylindrical ends. One natural generalization is to replace 'cylindrical' by 'asymptotically cylindrical'. In this article, we generalize the asymptotic results about the behavior of J-holomorphic curves near infinity to the asymptotically cylindrical setting. We also sketch how these asymptotic results allow the main compactness theorems in Symplectic Field Theory proved by Bourgeois, Eliashberg, Hofer, Wysocki and Zehnder to be extended to the asymptotically cylindrical case.
In this review paper, we present several results on central extensions of the Lie algebra of symplectic (Hamiltonian) vector fields, and compare them to similar results for the Lie algebra of (exact) divergence free vector fields. In particular, we comment on universal central extensions and integrability to the group level.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold admitting a metaplectic structure (a symplectic analogue of the Riemannian spin structure) and a torsion-free symplectic connection $\nabla.$ Symplectic Killing spinor fields for this structure are sections of the symplectic spinor bundle satisfying a certain first order partial differential equation and they are the main topic of this paper. We derive a necessary condition satisfied by a symplectic Killing spinor field. The advantage of this condition consists in the fact that it is expressed by a zeroth order operator. This condition helps us substantiona…
We give a method to lift $(2,0)$-tensors fields on a manifold $M$ to build symplectic forms on $TM$. Conversely, we show that any symplectic form $\Om$ on $TM$ is symplectomorphic, in a neighborhood of the zero section, to a symplectic form built naturally from three $(2,0)$-tensor fields associated to $\Om$.
Branched covers of orbit cylinders are the basic examples of holomorphic curves studied in symplectic field theory. Since all curves with Fredholm index one can never be regular for any choice of cylindrical almost complex structure, we generalize the obstruction bundle technique of Taubes for determining multiple cover contributions from Gromov-Witten theory to the case of moduli spaces with boundary. Our result proves that the differential in rational symplectic field theory and contact homology is strictly decreasing with respect to the natural action filtration.
We prove that every strong symplectic filling of a planar contact manifold admits a symplectic Lefschetz fibration over the disk, and every strong filling of the 3-torus similarly admits a Lefschetz fibration over the annulus. It follows that strongly fillable planar contact structures are also Stein fillable, and all strong fillings of the 3-torus are equivalent up to symplectic deformation and blowup. These constructions result from a compactness theorem for punctured J-holomorphic curves that foliate a convex symplectic manifold. We use it also to show that the compactly supported symplecto…
Let $(M,ω)$ be an almost symplectic manifold ($ω$ is a non degenerate, not closed, 2-form). We say that a vector field $X$ of $M$ is locally Hamiltonian if $L_Xω=0,d(i(X)ω)=0$, and it is Hamiltonian if, furthermore, the 1-form $i(X)ω$ is exact. Such vector fields were considered in a 2007 paper by F. Fasso and N. Sansonetto, under the name of strongly Hamiltonian, and a corresponding action-angle theorem was proven. Almost symplectic manifolds may have few, non-zero, Hamiltonian vector fields or even none. Therefore, it is important to have examples and it is our aim to provide such examples h…
We study symplectic manifolds $(M^{2l},ω)$ equipped with a symplectic torsion-free affine (also called Fedosov) connection $\nabla$ and admitting a metaplectic structure. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be the so called symplectic spinor bundle and let $R^S$ be the curvature tensor field of the symplectic spinor covariant derivative $\nabla^S$ associated to the Fedosov connection $\nabla.$ It is known that the space of symplectic spinor valued exterior differential 2-forms, $Γ(M,\bigwedge^2T^*M\otimes {\mathcal{S}}),$ decomposes into three invariant spaces with respect to the structure group, which is the m…
It is shown that the characteristic vector field associated to a first order PDE has the same form of an infinitesimal generator of an odd-symplectic transformation with contact Hamiltonian the given PDE. It is considered under which condition such PDE has a characteristic vector field commuting with a generator of an odd-symplectic action.
In this paper we produce a lower bound for the number of periodic orbits of certain Hamiltonian vector fields near Bott-nondegenerate symplectic critical submanifolds. This result is then related to the problem of finding closed orbits of the motion of a charged low energy particle on a Riemannian manifold under the influence of a magnetic field
We classify the finite type (in the sense of E. Cartan theory of prolongations) subalgebras $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{sp}(V)$, where $V$ is the symplectic 4-dimensional space, and show that they satisfy $\mathfrak{h}^{(k)}=0$ for all $k>0$. Using this result, we reduce the problem of classification of graded transitive finite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of symplectic vector fields on $V$ to the description of graded transitive finite-dimensional subalgebras of the full prolongations $\mathfrak{p}_1^{(\infty)}$ and $\mathfrak{p}_2^{(\infty)}$, where $\mathfrak{p}_1$ and $\mathfr…
This paper is concerned with the rational symplectic field theory in the Floer case. For this observe that in the general geometric setup for symplectic field theory the contact manifolds can be replaced by mapping tori of symplectic manifolds with symplectomorphisms. While the cylindrical contact homology is given by the Floer homologies of powers of the symplectomorphism, the other algebraic invariants of symplectic field theory provide natural generalizations of symplectic Floer homology. For symplectically aspherical manifolds and Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms we study the moduli spaces o…
We introduce in this paper a field theory on symplectic manifolds that are fibered over a real surface with interior marked points and cylindrical ends. We assign to each such object a morphism between certain tensor products of quantum and Floer homologies that are canonically attached to the fibration. We prove a composition theorem in the spirit of QFT, and show that this field theory applies naturally to the problem of minimising geodesics in Hofer's geometry. This work can be considered as a natural framework that incorporates both the Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz morphisms and the Seidel is…
Generalizing local Gromov-Witten theory, in this paper we define a local version of symplectic field theory. When the symplectic manifold with cylindrical ends is four-dimensional and the underlying simple curve is regular by automatic transversality, we establish a transversality result for all its multiple covers and discuss the resulting algebraic structures.
For a closed symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, a compatible almost complex structure $J$, a 1-periodic time dependent symplectic vector field $Z$ and a homotopy class of closed curves $γ$ we define a Floer complex based on 1-periodic trajectories of $Z$ in the homotopy class $γ$. We suppose that the closed 1-form $i_{Z_t}ω$ represents a cohomology class $β(Z):=β$, independent of $t$. We show how to associate to $(M,ω,γ,β)$ and to two pairs $(Z_i,J_i)$, $i=1,2$ with $β(Z_i)=β$ an invariant, the relative symplectic torsion, which is an element in the Whitehead group $Wh(Λ_0)$, of a Novikov ring $Λ_0$…
We observe that, in dimension four, symplectic forms may be obtained via Lorentzian geometry; in particular, null vector fields can give rise to exact symplectic forms. That a null vector field is nowhere vanishing yet orthogonal to itself is essential to this construction. Specifically, we show that on a Lorentzian 4-manifold $(M,g)$, if ${\boldsymbol k}$ is a complete null vector field with geodesic flow along which $\text{Ric}({\boldsymbol k},{\boldsymbol k}) > 0$, and if $f$ is any smooth function on $M$ with ${\boldsymbol k}(f)$ nowhere vanishing, then $dg(e^f{\boldsymbol k},\cdot)$ is a …
Log-symplectic structures are Poisson structures that are determined by a symplectic form with logarithmic singularities. We construct moduli spaces of curves with values in a log-symplectic manifold. Among the applications, we classify symplectically ruled log-symplectic $4$ manifolds (both orientable and non-orientable), and obstruct the existence of contact boundary components, in analogy with well-known theorems by McDuff. Moreover, we study certain log-symplectically ruled surfaces, using tools from symplectic field theory.
Given a fibration of a symplectic manifold by lagrangian tori, we show that each symplectic vector field splits into two parts : the first is Hamiltonian and the second is symplectic and preserves the fibration. We then show an application of this result in the study of the regular deformations of completely integrable systems.
We sketch in this article a new theory, which we call Symplectic Field Theory or SFT, which provides an approach to Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds and their Lagrangian submanifolds in the spirit of topological field theory, and at the same time serves as a rich source of new invariants of contact manifolds and their Legendrian submanifolds. Moreover, we hope that the applications of SFT go far beyond this framework.
Like (co)homology group theory of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on symplectic vector spaces, we try studying homology group theory on symplecit tori introducing the notion of weight.
Based on the localization result for descendants in rational SFT moduli spaces from our last joint paper, we prove topological recursion relations for the Hamiltonian in SFT of symplectic mapping tori and in local SFT. Combined with the dilaton equation in SFT, we use them to prove a reconstruction theorem for descendants from primaries. While it turns out that (in contrast to Gromov-Witten theory and non-equivariant cylindrical contact homology) the descendant Hamiltonian cannot be computed from the Hamiltonian without descendants alone, we get that the only additional piece of information ne…
We outline a program for incorporating holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary conditions into symplectic field theory, with an emphasis on ideas, geometric intuition, and a description of the resulting algebraic structures.
The purpose of this paper is presenting a theoretical basis for the study of $ω$-Hamiltonian vector fields in a more general approach than the classical one. We introduce the concepts of $ω$-symplectic group and $ω$-semisymplectic group, and describe some of their properties. We show that the Lie algebra of such groups is a useful tool in the recognition of an $ω$-Hamiltonian vector field defined on a symplectic vector space $(V,ω)$ with respect to coordinates that are not necessarily symplectic.
We construct the TQFT on symplectic cohomology and wrapped Floer cohomology, possibly twisted by a local system of coefficients, and prove that the TQFT respects Viterbo restriction maps and the canonical maps from ordinary cohomology. We also construct the module structure of wrapped Floer cohomology over symplectic cohomology. These constructions yield new applications in symplectic topology relating to the Arnol'd chord conjecture and to exact contact embeddings. We prove that if a Liouville domain M admits an exact embedding into an exact convex symplectic manifold X, and the boundary of M…
We prove a theorem on singular symplectic cotangent bundle reduction in the Fréchet setting and apply it to Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with special emphasis on the Higgs sector of the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model. For the latter model we give a detailed description of the reduced phase space and show that the singular structure is encoded in a finite-dimensional Lie group action.
This survey wants to give a short introduction to the transversality problem in symplectic field theory and motivate to approach it using the new Fredholm theory by Hofer, Wysocki and Zehnder. With this it should serve as a lead-in for the user's guide to polyfolds, which will appear soon and is the result of a working group organized by J. Fish, R. Golovko and the author at MSRI Berkeley in fall 2009.
We study the coherent orientations of the moduli spaces of holomorphic curves in Symplectic Field Theory, generalizing a construction due to Floer and Hofer. In particular we examine their behavior at multiple closed Reeb orbits under change of the asymptotic direction. The orientations are determined by a certain choice of orientation at each closed Reeb orbit, that is similar to the orientation of the unstable tangent spaces of critical points in finite--dimensional Morse theory.
This is a lecture note prepared for the SFT 9 workshop in Augsburg, Germany. The text describes a polyfold approach to the construction of symplectic field theory and focuses on the perturbation and transversality theory.
This is the preliminary manuscript of a book on symplectic field theory based on a lecture course for PhD students given in 2015-16. It covers the essentials of the analytical theory of punctured pseudoholomorphic curves, taking the opportunity to fill in gaps in the existing literature where necessary, and then gives detailed explanations of a few of the standard applications in contact topology such as distinguishing contact structures up to contactomorphism and proving symplectic non-fillability.
We construct a combinatorial invariant of Legendrian knots in standard contact three-space. This invariant, which encodes rational relative Symplectic Field Theory and extends contact homology, counts holomorphic disks with an arbitrary number of positive punctures. The construction uses ideas from string topology.
A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $Λ=\{Λ_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $Λ_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $Λ$ and $\tilde Λ$ are called transversal if $Λ_x$ intersects $\tildeΛ_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The La…
We construct a local characteristic map to a symplectic manifold M via certain cohomology groups of Hamiltonian vector fields. For each p in M, the Leibniz cohomology of the Hamiltonian vector fields on R^{2n} maps to the Leibniz cohomology of all Hamiltonian vector fields on M. For a particular extension g_n of the symplectic Lie algebra, the Leibniz cohomology of g_n is shown to be an exterior algebra on the canonical symplectic two-form. The Leibniz homology of g_n then maps to the Leibniz homology of Hamiltonian vector fields on R^{2n}.
A general slice theorem for the action of a Fréchet Lie group on a Fréchet manifolds is established. The Nash-Moser theorem provides the fundamental tool to generalize the result of Palais to this infinite-dimensional setting. The presented slice theorem is illustrated by its application to gauge theories: the action of the gauge transformation group admits smooth slices at every point and thus the gauge orbit space is stratified by Fréchet manifolds. Furthermore, a covariant and symplectic formulation of classical field theory is proposed and extensively discussed. At the root of this novel f…
Many interesting physical systems have mathematical descriptions as finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Poincare who started the modern theory of dynamical systems and symplectic geometry developed a particular viewpoint combining geometric and dynamical systems ideas in the study of Hamiltonian systems. After Poincare the field of dynamical systems and the field of symplectic geometry developed separately. Both fields have rich theories and the time seems ripe to develop the common core with highly integrated ideas from both fields. We discuss problems which show h…
The quantum homology of the monotone complex quadric surface splits into the sum of two fields. We outline a proof of the following statement: The unities of these fields give rise to distinct symplectic quasi-states defined by asymptotic spectral invariants. In fact, these quasi-states turn out to be "supported" on disjoint Lagrangian submanifolds. Our method involves a spectral sequence which starts at homology of the loop space of the 2-sphere and whose higher differentials are computed via symplectic field theory, in particular with the help of the Bourgeois-Oancea exact sequence.
Infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems appear naturally in the rich algebraic structure of Symplectic Field Theory. Carefully defining a generalization of gravitational descendants and adding them to the picture, one can produce an infinite number of symmetries of such systems . As in Gromov-Witten theory, the study of the topological meaning of gravitational descendants yields new differential equations for the SFT Hamiltonian, where the key point is to understand the dependence of the algebraic constructions on choices of auxiliary data like contact form, cylindrical almost complex structu…
We consider commuting operators obtained by quantization of Hamiltonians of the Hopf (aka dispersionless KdV) hierarchy. Such operators naturally arise in the setting of Symplectic Field Theory (SFT). A complete set of common eigenvectors of these operators is given by Schur polynomials. We use this result for computing the SFT potential of a disk.
The paper contains a short review of the theory of symplectic and contact manifolds and of the generalization of this theory to the case of supermanifolds. It is shown that this generalization can be used to obtain some important results in quantum field theory. In particular, regarding $N$-superconformal geometry as particular case of contact complex geometry, one can better understand $N=2$ superconformal field theory and its connection to topological conformal field theory. The odd symplectic geometry constitutes a mathematical basis of Batalin-Vilkovisky procedure of quantization of gauge …
We compute the Gromov-Witten potential at all genera of target smooth Riemann surfaces using Symplectic Field Theory techniques and establish differential equations for the full descendant potential. This amounts to impose (and possibly solve) different kinds of Schroedinger equations related to some quantization of the dispersionless KdV hierarchy. In particular we find very explicit formulas for the Gromov-Witten invariants of low degree of P1 with descendants of the Kaehler class.
A formal symplectic structure on RxM is constructed for the unsteady flow of an incompressible viscous fluid on a three dimensional domain M. The evolution equation for the helicity density is expressed via the divergence of the Liouville vector field that generates symplectic dilation. For an inviscid fluid this equation reduces to a conservation law. As an application the symplectic dilation is used to generate Hamiltonian automorphisms of the symplectic structure which are then related to the symmetries of the velocity field.
By using help of algebraic operad theory, Leibniz algebra theory and symplectic-Poisson geometry are connected. We introduce the notion of cohomological vector field defined on nongraded symplectic plane. It will be proved that the cohomological vector fields induce the finite dimensional Leibniz algebras by the derived bracket construction. This proposition is a Leibniz analogue of the cohomological field theory in the category of Lie algebras. The basic properties of the cohomological fields will be studied, in particular, we discuss a factorization problem with the cohomological fields and …
In this paper, we construct a quantization functor, associating a complex vector space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field of odd characteristic. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main new technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann property for the Heisenberg group. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical vector space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group…
