This paper is concerned with the rational symplectic field theory in the Floer case. For this observe that in the general geometric setup for symplectic field theory the contact manifolds can be replaced by mapping tori of symplectic manifolds with symplectomorphisms. While the cylindrical contact homology is given by the Floer homologies of powers of the symplectomorphism, the other algebraic invariants of symplectic field theory provide natural generalizations of symplectic Floer homology. For symplectically aspherical manifolds and Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms we study the moduli spaces of rational curves and prove a transversality result, which does not need the polyfold theory by Hofer, Wysocki and Zehnder. Besides that our result shows that one does not get nontrivial operations on Floer homology from symplectic field theory, we use it to compute the full contact homology of the corresponding Hamiltonian mapping torus.
Like (co)homology group theory of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on symplectic vector spaces, we try studying homology group theory on symplecit tori introducing the notion of weight.
We introduce the cutting construction of possibly non-compact symplectic toric manifolds, in particular, toric symplectic cones that correspond to a weakly convex good cone. Since the symplectization of a toric contact manifold is a toric symplectic cone, we can also construct toric contact manifolds that correspond to a weakly convex good cone by the cutting construction. (Note that these toric contact manifolds can not be constructed by Delzant construction.) We further prove there are no toric Sasakian structures on these contact manifolds. From this, contact toric manifolds of toric K-cont…
We calculate the relative versions of embedded contact homology, contact homology and cylindrical contact homology of the sutured solid torus $(S^1\times D^2,Γ)$, where $Γ$ consists of $2n$ parallel longitudinal sutures.
Computing embedded contact homology (ECH) and related invariants of certain toric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Lerman) has led to interesting new results in the study of symplectic embeddings. Here, we give a combinatorial formulation of ECH chain complexes for general toric contact 3-manifolds. As a corollary, we prove Conjecture A.3 from [Hutchings14].
We study the Lagrangian quantum homology of real parts of Fano toric manifolds of minimal Chern number at least 2, using coefficients in a ring of Laurent polynomials over Z/2Z. We show that these Lagrangians are wide, in the sense that their quantum homology is isomorphic as a module to their classical homology tensored with this ring. Moreover, we show that the quantum homology is isomorphic as a ring to the quantum homology of the ambient symplectic manifold.
We complete the classification of compact connected contact toric manifolds initiated by Banyaga and Molino and by Galicki and Boyer. As an application we prove the conjectures of Toth and Zelditch on toric integrable systems on the n-torus and the 2-sphere.
We give a proof of, for the case of contact structures defined by global contact 1-forms, a Theorem stated by Eliashberg that for any overtwisted contact structure on a closed 3-manifold, its contact homology is 0. A different proof is also outlined in the appendix by Yakov Eliashberg.
We consider a family of tight contact structures on the three-dimensional torus and we compute the relative Contact Homology by using the variational theory of critical points at infinity. We will also show some algebraic equivariant homology reductions.
I describe a general scheme which associates conjugacy classes of tori in the contactomorphism group to transverse almost complex structures on a compact contact manifold. Moreover, to tori of Reeb type whose Lie algebra contains a Reeb vector field one can associate a Sasaki cone. Thus, for contact structures of K-contact type one obtains a configuration of Sasaki cones called a bouquet such that each Sasaki cone is associated with a conjugacy class of tori of Reeb type.
We define toric contact manifolds in arbitrary codimension and give a description of such manifolds in terms of a kind of labelled polytope embedded into a grassmannian, analogous to the Delzant polytope of a toric symplectic manifold.
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
Let $K$ denote a knot inside the homology sphere $Y$. The zero-framed longitude of $K$ gives the complement of $K$ in $Y$ the structure of a bordered three-manifold, which may be denoted by $Y(K)$. We compute the quasi-isomorphism type of the bordered Floer complex of $Y(K)$ in terms of the knot Floer complex associated with $K$. As a corollary, we show that if a homology sphere has the same Heegaard Floer homology as $S^3$ it does not contain any incompressible tori. Consequently, if $Y$ is an irreducible homology sphere $L$-space then $Y$ is either $S^3$, or the Poicaré sphere $Σ(2,3,5)$, or…
In this paper we study certain algebraic properties of the quantum homology algebra for the class of symplectic toric Fano manifolds. In particular, we examine the semi-simplicity of the quantum homology algebra, and the more general property of containing a field as a direct summand. Our main result provides an easily-verified sufficient condition for these properties which is independent of the symplectic form. Moreover, we answer two questions of Entov and Polterovich negatively by providing examples of toric Fano manifolds with non semi-simple quantum homology algebra, and others in which …
For any pair of integers $n\geq 1$ and $q\geq 2$, we construct an infinite family of mutually non-isotopic symplectic tori representing the homology class $q[F]$ of an elliptic surface E(n), where $[F]$ is the homology class of the fiber. We also show how such families can be non-isotopically and symplectically embedded into a more general class of symplectic 4-manifolds.
We compute the Lagrangian Floer cohomology groups of certain tori in closed simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds arising from Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. These manifolds are usually not symplectically aspherical. As a result of the computation we observe examples where $HF(L_0)\cong HF(L_1)$ and $L_0$ and $L_1$ are smoothly isotopic but $L_0,L_1$ are not symplectically isotopic and are distinguished by $HF(L_0,L_1)$.
We study a class of simply connected manifolds in all odd dimensions greater than 3 that exhibit an infinite number of toric contact structures of Reeb type that are inequivalent as contact structures. We compute the cohomology ring of our manifolds by using the join construction for Sasaki manifolds and show that all such contact structures admit a ray of compatible Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature (CSC). Furthermore, infinitely many such structures admit at least 3 rays of constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics.
After observing that the well-known convexity theorems of symplectic geometry also hold for compact contact manifolds with an effective action of a torus whose Reeb vector field corresponds to an element of the Lie algebra of the torus, we use this fact together with a recent symplectic orbifold version of Delzant's theorem due to Lerman and Tolman [LT] to show that every such compact toric contact manifold can be obtained by a contact reduction from an odd dimensional sphere.
In this paper, we compute contact homology of some quasi-regular contact structures, which admit Hamiltonian actions of Reeb type of Lie groups. We will discuss the toric contact case, (where the torus is of Reeb type), and the case of homogeneous contact manifolds. In both of these cases the quotients by the Reeb action are Kähler and admit perfect Morse-Bott functions via the moment map. It turns out that the contact homology depends only on the homology of the symplectic base and the bundle data of the contact manifolds as a circle bundle over the base. Moreover we can identify the relevant…
By a theorem of Banyaga the group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold $P$ preserving a regular contact form $α$ is a central $S^1$ extension of the commutator of the group of symplectomorphisms of the base $B = P/S^1$. We show that if $T$ is a Hamiltonian maximal torus in the group of symplectomorphism of $B$, then its preimage under the extension map is a maximal torus not only in the group $\Diff(P, α)$ of diffeomorphisms of $P$ preserving $α$ but also in the much bigger group of contactomorphisms $\Diff (P, ξ)$, the group of diffeomorphism of $P$ preserving the contact distribution $ξ= \ker α$…
We give a simple model in the complex plane of the 0-surgery along a fibered knot of a closed 3-manifold M to yield a mapping torus M'. This model allows explicit relations between pseudoholomorphic curves in the symplectizations of M and M'. As an application we use it to compute the cylindrical contact homology of open books resulting from a positive Dehn twist on a torus with boundary.
Kollár has found subtle obstructions to the existence of Sasakian structures on 5-dimensional manifolds. In the present article we develop methods of using these obstructions to distinguish K-contact manifolds from Sasakian ones. In particular, we find the first example of a closed 5-manifold M with $H_1(M,Z)=0$ which is K-contact but which carries no semi-regular Sasakian structures.
Due to a previous result which states that contact varieties are isomorphic to certain varieties, the momentum polytopes of contact manifolds are convex.
We calculate the sutured version of cylindrical contact homology of a sutured contact solid torus $(S^1\times D^2,Γ, ξ)$, where $Γ$ consists of $2n$ parallel sutures of arbitrary slope and $ξ$ is a universally tight contact structure. In particular, we show that it is non-zero. This computation is one of the first computations of the sutured version of cylindrical contact homology and does not follow from computations in the closed case.
In this article we define and compute the Novikov Floer homology associated to a non-resonant magnetic field and a mechanical Hamiltonian on a flat torus T^{2N}. As a result, we deduce that this Hamiltonian system always has 2N+1 contractible solutions, and generically even 2^{2N} contractible solutions. Moreover if there exists a non-degenerate non-contractible solution then there necessarily exists another.
We define a relative version of contact homology for contact manifolds with convex boundary, and prove basic properties of this relative contact homology. Similar considerations also hold for embedded contact homology.
We list the properties of contact homology, beyond purely formal, needed for the proofs of some of the recent applications of contact homology in dynamics to work. The list is put together for the AIM Transversality in Contact Homology Workshop.
In this note we analyze displaceability of pre-Lagrangian toric fibers in contact toric manifolds. While every symplectic toric manifold contains at least one non-displaceable Lagrangian toric fiber and infinitely many displaceable ones, we show that this is not the case for contact toric manifolds. More precisely, we prove that for the contact toric manifolds $\mathbb{S}^{2d-1} (d\geq 2)$ and $\mathbb{T}^k \times \mathbb{S}^{2d+k-1} (d \geq 1)$ all pre-Lagrangian toric fibers are displaceable, and that for all contact toric manifolds for which the toric action is free, except possibly non-tri…
In this paper we show that any good toric contact manifold has well defined cylindrical contact homology and describe how it can be combinatorially computed from the associated moment cone. As an application we compute the cylindrical contact homology of a particularly nice family of examples that appear in the work of Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-Waldram on Sasaki-Einstein metrics. We show in particular that these give rise to a new infinite family of non-equivalent contact structures on $S^2 \times S^{3}$ in the unique homotopy class of almost contact structures with vanishing first Chern class…
Let $(M, α)$ be a $2n+1$-dimensional connected compact contact toric manifold of Reeb type. Suppose the contact form $α$ is regular, we find conditions under which $M$ is homeomorphic to $S^{2n+1}$.
In a previous paper, we showed that the original definition of cylindrical contact homology, with rational coefficients, is valid on a closed three-manifold with a dynamically convex contact form. However we did not show that this cylindrical contact homology is an invariant of the contact structure. In the present paper, we define "nonequivariant contact homology" and "S^1-equivariant contact homology", both with integer coefficients, for a contact form on a closed manifold in any dimension with no contractible Reeb orbits. We prove that these contact homologies depend only on the contact str…
We establish computational results concerning the Lagrangian capacity from "Cieliebak and Mohnke - Punctured holomorphic curves and Lagrangian embeddings". More precisely, we show that the Lagrangian capacity of a 4-dimensional convex toric domain is equal to its diagonal. The proof involves comparisons between the Lagrangian capacity, the McDuff-Siegel capacities from "McDuff and Siegel - Symplectic capacities, unperturbed curves, and convex toric domains", and the Gutt-Hutchings capacities from "Gutt and Hutchings - Symplectic capacities from positive S1-equivariant symplectic homology". Wor…
In this paper we give a rigorous definition of cylindrical contact homology for contact $3$-manifolds that admit nondegenerate contact forms with no contractible Reeb orbits, and show that the cylindrical contact homology is an invariant of the contact structure.
Embedded contact homology (ECH) is a kind of Floer homology for contact three-manifolds. Taubes has shown that ECH is isomorphic to a version of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology (and both are conjecturally isomorphic to a version of Heegaard Floer homology). This isomorphism allows information to be transferred between topology and contact geometry in three dimensions. In this article we first give an overview of the definition of embedded contact homology. We then outline its applications to generalizations of the Weinstein conjecture, the Arnold chord conjecture, and obstructions to symplectic …
According to Lerman, compact connected toric contact 3-manifolds with a non-free toric action whose moment cone spans an angle greater than $π$ are overtwisted, thus non-fillable. In contrast, we show that all compact connected toric contact manifolds in dimension greater than three are weakly symplectically fillable and most of them are strongly symplectically fillable. The proof is based on the Lerman's classification of toric contact manifolds and on our observation that the only contact manifolds in higher dimensions that admit free toric action are the cosphere bundle of $T^d, d\geq3$ $(T…
I begin by giving a general discussion of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems in the setting of contact geometry. We then pass to the particular case of toric contact structures on the manifold $S^2\times S^3$. In particular we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem for a class of toric contact structures, $Y^{p,q}$, discovered by physicists by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p',q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.
Let K \subset Y be a knot in a three manifold which admits a longitude-framed surgery such that the surgered manifold has first Betti number greater than that of Y. We find a formula which computes the twisted Floer homology of the surgered manifold, in terms of twisted knot Floer homology. Using this, we compute the twisted Heegaard Floer homology \underline{HF}^+ of the mapping torus of a diffeomorphism of a closed Riemann surface whose mapping class is periodic, giving an almost complete description of the structure of these groups. When the mapping class is nontrivial, we find in particula…
We use positive S^1-equivariant symplectic homology to define a sequence of symplectic capacities c_k for star-shaped domains in R^{2n}. These capacities are conjecturally equal to the Ekeland-Hofer capacities, but they satisfy axioms which allow them to be computed in many more examples. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the capacities c_k of any "convex toric domain" or "concave toric domain". As an application, we determine optimal symplectic embeddings of a cube into any convex or concave toric domain. We also extend the capacities c_k to functions of Liouville domains whic…
We show that for dynamically convex contact forms in three dimensions, the cylindrical contact homology differential d can be defined by directly counting holomorphic cylinders for a generic almost complex structure, without any abstract perturbation of the Cauchy-Riemann equation. We also prove that d^2 = 0. Invariance of cylindrical contact homology in this case can be proved using S^1-dependent almost complex structures, similarly to work of Bourgeois-Oancea; this will be explained in another paper.
We give an algorithm for computing the contact homology of some Brieskorn manifolds. As an application, we construct infinitely many contact structures on the class of simply connected contact manifolds that admit nice contact forms (i.e. no Reeb orbits of degree -1,0 or 1) and have index positivity with trivial first Chern class.
In this paper we prove a recursion relation between the the one-point genus-0 gravitational descendants of a Stein domain $(M,\partial M)$. This relation is best described by the degree -2 map $D$ in the linearized contact homology of $\partial M$, arising from the Bourgeois--Oancea exact sequence between symplectic homology of $M$ and linearized contact homology of $\partial M$. All one-point genus-0 gravitational descendants can be reduce to the one-point Gromov--Witten invariants via iterates of $D$.
This article is a continuation of [15]. For Legendrian surfaces in $1$-jet spaces, we prove that the Cellular DGA defined in [15] is stable tame isomorphic to the Legendrian contact homology DGA.
We calculate the Heegaard Floer homologies$HF^+(M,s) for mapping tori M associated to certain surface diffeomorphisms, where s is any Spin^c structure on M whose first Chern class is non-torsion. Let gamma and delta be a pair of geometrically dual nonseparating curves on a genus g Riemann surface Sigma_g, and let sigma be a curve separating Sigma_g into components of genus 1 and g-1. Write t-gamma, t_delta, and t_sigma for the right-handed Dehn twists about each of these curves. The examples we consider are the mapping tori of the diffeomorphisms t_gamma^m circ t_delta^n for m,n in Z and that …
We construct a Legendrian 2-torus in the 1-jet space of $S^1\times\R$ (or of $\R^2$) from a loop of Legendrian knots in the 1-jet space of $\R$. The differential graded algebra (DGA) for the Legendrian contact homology of the torus is explicitly computed in terms of the DGA of the knot and the monodromy operator of the loop. The contact homology of the torus is shown to depend only on the chain homotopy type of the monodromy operator. The construction leads to many new examples of Legendrian knotted tori. In particular, it allows us to construct a Legendrian torus with DGA which does not admit…
We give a construction of contact homology in the sense of Eliashberg--Givental--Hofer. Specifically, we construct coherent virtual fundamental cycles on the relevant compactified moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic curves.
Knot contact homology is an invariant of knots derived from Legendrian contact homology which has numerous connections to the knot group. We use basic properties of knot groups to prove that knot contact homology detects every torus knot. Further, if the knot contact homology of a knot is isomorphic to that of a cable (respectively composite) knot, then the knot is a cable (respectively composite).
These are notes for a course on contact manifolds and torus actions delivered at the summer school on Symplectic Geometry of Integrable Hamiltonian Systems at Centre de Recerca Matemàtica in Barcelona in July 2001. To be published by Birkhauser.
We present three equivalent definitions of $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology. We show that, using rational coefficients, the positive part of $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology is isomorphic to linearized contact homology, when the latter is defined. We present several computations and applications, and introduce a rigorously defined substitute for cylindrical/linearized contact homology based on an $S^1$-equivariant construction.
This paper is the sequel to the previous paper [Ne15], which showed that sufficient regularity exists to define cylindrical contact homology in dimension three for nondegenerate dynamically separated contact forms, a subclass of dynamically convex contact forms. The Reeb orbits of these so-called dynamically separated contact forms satisfy a uniform growth condition on their Conley-Zehnder indices with respect to a free homotopy class; see Definition 1.7. {Given a contact form which is dynamically separated up to large action, we demonstrate a filtration by action on the chain complex and show…
This paper is the sequel to "The equivalence of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology via open book decompositions I" and is devoted to proving some of the technical parts of the HF=ECH isomorphism.
This article is a survey on the authors' proof of the isomorphism between Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology appeared in This article is a survey on the authors' proof of the isomorphism between Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology appeared in arXiv:1208.1074, arXiv:1208.1077 and arXiv:1208.1526.
The purpose of this paper is to give a survey of the various versions of Floer homology for manifolds with contact type boundary that have so far appeared in the literature. Under the name of ``Symplectic homology'' or ``Floer homology for manifolds with boundary'' they bear in fact common features and we shall try to underline the principles that unite them. Once this will be accomplished we shall proceed to describe the peculiarity of each of the constructions and the specific applications that unfold out of it: classification of ellipsoids and polydiscs in $\CC^n$, stability of the action s…
We use contact handle decompositions and a stabilization process to compute the cylindrical contact homology of a subcritical Stein-fillable contact manifold with vanishing first Chern class, and show that it is completely determined by the homology of a subcritical Stein-filling of the contact manifold.
We prove a version of Sandon's conjecture on the number of translated points of contactomorphisms for the case of prequantization bundles over certain closed monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Namely we show that any contactomorphism of such a prequantization bundle lying in the identity component of the contactomorphism group possesses at least $N$ translated points, where $N$ is the minimal Chern number of the symplectic toric manifold. The proof relies on the theory of generating functions coupled with equivariant cohomology, whereby we adapt Givental's approach to the Arnold conjecture f…
Using contact homology, we reobtain some recent results of Geiges and Gonzalo about the fundamental group of the space of contact structures on some 3-manifolds. We show that our techniques can be used to study higher dimensional contact manifolds and higher order homotopy groups.
