After observing that the well-known convexity theorems of symplectic geometry also hold for compact contact manifolds with an effective action of a torus whose Reeb vector field corresponds to an element of the Lie algebra of the torus, we use this fact together with a recent symplectic orbifold version of Delzant's theorem due to Lerman and Tolman [LT] to show that every such compact toric contact manifold can be obtained by a contact reduction from an odd dimensional sphere.
We introduce the cutting construction of possibly non-compact symplectic toric manifolds, in particular, toric symplectic cones that correspond to a weakly convex good cone. Since the symplectization of a toric contact manifold is a toric symplectic cone, we can also construct toric contact manifolds that correspond to a weakly convex good cone by the cutting construction. (Note that these toric contact manifolds can not be constructed by Delzant construction.) We further prove there are no toric Sasakian structures on these contact manifolds. From this, contact toric manifolds of toric K-cont…
We study the contact equivalence problem for toric contact structures on $S^3$-bundles over $S^2$. That is, given two toric contact structures, one can ask the question: when are they equivalent as contact structures while inequivalent as toric contact structures? In general this appears to be a difficult problem. To find inequivalent toric contact structures that are contact equivalent, we show that the corresponding 3-tori belong to distinct conjugacy classes in the contactomorphism group. To show that two toric contact structures with the same first Chern class are contact inequivalent, we …
We complete the classification of compact connected contact toric manifolds initiated by Banyaga and Molino and by Galicki and Boyer. As an application we prove the conjectures of Toth and Zelditch on toric integrable systems on the n-torus and the 2-sphere.
We define toric contact manifolds in arbitrary codimension and give a description of such manifolds in terms of a kind of labelled polytope embedded into a grassmannian, analogous to the Delzant polytope of a toric symplectic manifold.
We study a class of simply connected manifolds in all odd dimensions greater than 3 that exhibit an infinite number of toric contact structures of Reeb type that are inequivalent as contact structures. We compute the cohomology ring of our manifolds by using the join construction for Sasaki manifolds and show that all such contact structures admit a ray of compatible Sasaki metrics of constant scalar curvature (CSC). Furthermore, infinitely many such structures admit at least 3 rays of constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics.
Due to a previous result which states that contact varieties are isomorphic to certain varieties, the momentum polytopes of contact manifolds are convex.
I begin by giving a general discussion of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems in the setting of contact geometry. We then pass to the particular case of toric contact structures on the manifold $S^2\times S^3$. In particular we give a complete solution to the contact equivalence problem for a class of toric contact structures, $Y^{p,q}$, discovered by physicists by showing that $Y^{p,q}$ and $Y^{p',q'}$ are inequivalent as contact structures if and only if $p\neq p'$.
In this note, we prove that on polarized toric manifolds the relative $K$-stability with respect to Donaldson's toric degenerations is a necessary condition for the existence of Calabi's extremal metrics, and also we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper in the space of $G_0$-invariant Kähler metrics for the case of toric surfaces which admit the extremal metrics.
Let X be a compact toric surface. There exists a sequence of torus equivariant blow-ups of X such that the blown-up toric surface obtained admits a cscK metric.
We study compatible toric Sasaki metrics with constant scalar curvature on co-oriented compact toric contact manifolds of Reeb type of dimension at least 5. These metrics come in rays of transversal homothety due to the possible rescaling of the Reeb vector fields. We prove that there exist Reeb vector fields for which the transversal Futaki invariant (restricted to the Lie algebra of the torus) vanishes. Using existence result of [25], we show that a co-oriented compact toric contact 5-manifold whose moment cone has 4 facets admits a finite number of rays of transversal homothetic compatible …
In this paper, we compute contact homology of some quasi-regular contact structures, which admit Hamiltonian actions of Reeb type of Lie groups. We will discuss the toric contact case, (where the torus is of Reeb type), and the case of homogeneous contact manifolds. In both of these cases the quotients by the Reeb action are Kähler and admit perfect Morse-Bott functions via the moment map. It turns out that the contact homology depends only on the homology of the symplectic base and the bundle data of the contact manifolds as a circle bundle over the base. Moreover we can identify the relevant…
In these notes, after an introduction to toric Kahler geometry, we present Calabi's family of U(n)-invariant extremal Kahler metrics in symplectic action-angle coordinates and show that it actually contains, as particular cases, many interesting cohomogeneity one examples of constant scalar curvature.
An almost Kähler structure is {\it extremal} if the Hermitian scalar curvature is a Killing potential [29]. When the almost complex structure is integrable it coincides with extremal Kähler metric in the sense of Calabi [8]. We observe that the existence of an extremal {\it toric} almost Kähler structure of involutive type implies uniform K-stability and we point out the existence of a formal solution of the Abreu equation for any angle along the invariant divisor. Applying the recent result of Chen--Cheng [10] and He [27], we conclude that the existence of a compatible extremal toric almost K…
We complete the reduction of Sasakian manifolds with the non-zero case by showing that Willett's contact reduced space is compatible with the Sasakian structure. We then prove the compatibility of the non-zero Sasakian (in particular, contact) reduction with the reduction of the Kähler (in particular, symplectic) cone. We provide examples obtained by toric actions on Sasakian spheres and make some comments concerning the curvature of the quotients.
In the same way that a contact manifold determines and is determined by a symplectic cone, a Sasaki manifold determines and is determined by a suitable Kahler cone. Kahler-Sasaki geometry is the geometry of these cones. This paper presents a symplectic action-angle coordinates approach to toric Kahler geometry and how it was recently generalized, by Burns-Guillemin-Lerman and Martelli-Sparks-Yau, to toric Kahler-Sasaki geometry. It also describes, as an application, how this approach can be used to relate a recent new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics constructed by Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-W…
We describe various constructions in Sasakian geometry. First we generalize the join construction of the first two authors to arbitrary Sasakian manifolds. We then give several examples, including ones which prove the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on manifolds homeomorphic to $S^2\times S^5.$ Then we use a generalization of the join construction due to Lerman, namely contact fibre bundles, to give a theorem constructing toric Sasakian structures. Finally, we explicitly construct regular toric Sasakian structures on all simply connected regular contact manifolds in dimension five.
By studying completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds we prove a conjecture of Toth and Zelditch that toric integrable geodesic flows on tori must have flat metrics.
In this short note, we prove that a Calabi extremal Kaehler-Ricci soliton on a compact toric Kaehler manifold is Einstein. This solves for the class of toric manifolds a general problem stated by the authors that they solved only under some curvature assumptions.
We determine the greatest lower bounds on the transverse Ricci curvature of compact toric Sasaki manifolds with positive basic first Chern class and with the first Chern class of the contact bundle being trivial. This is based on Wang-Zhu's and Futaki-Ono-Wang's works, and is an analogue of C. Li's work on toric Fano manifolds.
In this short note, we will prove a volume stability theorem which says that if an n-dimensional toric manifold $M$ admits a $\mathbb{T}^n$ invariant Kähler metric $ω$ with Ricci curvature no less than 1 and its volume is close to the volume of $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $M$ is bi-holomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^n$.
In this note, we study the SYZ mirror construction for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold using instanton corrections coming from Woodward's quasimap Floer theory instead of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono's Lagrangian Floer theory. We show that the resulting SYZ mirror coincides with the one written down via physical means (as expected).
In this note we prove that toric Kähler metrics on complex projective space which are also $U(n)$-invariant are determined by their equivariant spectrum i.e. the list of eigenvalues of the Laplacian together with weights of the torus representation on the eigenspaces.
In this note, we prove that on an $n$-dimensional compact toric manifold with positive first Chern class, the Kähler-Ricci flow with any initial $(S^1)^n$-invariant Kähler metric converges to a Kähler-Ricci soliton. In particular, we give another proof for the existence of Kähler-Ricci solitons on a compact toric manifold with positive first Chern class by using the Kähler-Ricci flow.
In [11] it was proved that, given a compact toric Sasaki manifold of positive basic first Chern class and trivial first Chern class of the contact bundle, one can find a deformed Sasaki structure on which a Sasaki-Einstein metric exists. In the present paper we first prove the uniqueness of such Einstein metrics on compact toric Sasaki manifolds modulo the action of the identity component of the automorphism group for the transverse holomorphic structure, and secondly remark that the result of [11] implies the existence of compatible Einstein metrics on all compact Sasaki manifolds obtained fr…
This note proves combinatorially that the intersection pairing on the middle dimensional compactly supported cohomology of a smooth toric hyperkaehler variety is always definite, providing a large number of non-trivial L^2 harmonic forms for toric hyperkaehler metrics on these varieties. This is motivated by a result of Hitchin about the definiteness of the pairing of L^2 harmonic forms on complete hyperkaehler manifolds of linear growth.
In this note we report on examples of 7- and 8-dimensional toric Fano manifolds that are not symmetric and still admit a Kaehler-Einstein metric. This answers a question first posed by V.V. Batyrev and E. Selivanova. The examples were found in the classification of toric Fano manifolds up to dimension 8 obtained by M. Oebro. We also discuss related open questions and conjectures.
These lecture notes are written for a PhD mini-course I gave at the CIRM in Luminy in 2019. Their intended purpose was to present, in the context of smooth toric varieties, a relatively self-contained and elementary introduction to the theory of extremal Kähler metrics pioneered by E. Calabi in the 1980's and extensively developed in recent years. The framework of toric manifolds, used in both symplectic and algebraic geometry, offers a fertile testing ground for the general theory of extremal Kähler metrics and provides an important class of smooth complex varieties for which the existence th…
The conjecture of D.Blair says that there are no nonflat Riemannian metrics of nonpositive curvature compatible with a contact structure. We prove this conjecture for a certain class of contact structures on closed 3-dimensional manifolds and construct a local counterexample. We also prove that a hyperbolic metric on $\mathbb{R}^3$ cannot be compatible with any contact structure.
Warped product CR-submanifolds in Kaehlerian manifolds were intensively studied only since 2001 after the impulse given by B.Y. Chen. Immediately after, another line of research, similar to that concerning Sasakian geometry as the odd dimensional version of Kaehlerian geometry, was developed, namely warped product contact CR-submanifolds in Sasakian manifolds. In this note we proved that there exists no proper doubly warped product contact CR-submanifolds in trans-Sasakian manifolds.
In this note, we study the Gehring link problem in the round sphere, which motives our study of the width of a band in positively curved manifolds. Using the same idea, we are able to get a sphere theorem for hypersurface in in the round $S^{n}$ in terms of its focal radius as well as the rigidity of Clifford hypersurface in $S^{n}$. The $3$-dimension case of our theorems confirm two conjectures raised by Gromov in [Gro18].
These are notes on some algebraic geometry of complex projective curves, together with an application to studying the contact curves in CP^3 and the null curves in the complex quadric Q^3 in CP^4, related by the well-known Klein correspondence. Most of this note consists of recounting the classical background. The main application is the explicit classification of rational null curves of low degree in Q^3. I have recently received a number of requests for these notes, so I am posting them to make them generally available.
Assume that $X$ is a homogeneous toric bundle of the form $G^{\mathbb{C}}\times_{P,τ} F$ and is Fano, where $G$ is a compact semisimple Lie group with complexification $G^\mathbb{C}$, $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G^\mathbb{C}$, $τ:P\rightarrow (T^m)^\mathbb{C}$ is a surjective homomorphism from $P$ to the algebraic torus $(T^m)^\mathbb{C}$, and $F$ is a compact toric manifold of complex dimension $m$. In this note we show that the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on $X$ with a $G\times T^m$-invariant initial Kähler form in $c_1(X)$ converges, modulo the algebraic torus action, to a Kähler-Ricci so…
In this paper we study compact Sasaki manifolds in view of transverse Kähler geometry and extend some results in Kähler geometry to Sasaki manifolds. In particular we define integral invariants which obstruct the existence of transverse Kähler metric with harmonic Chern forms. The integral invariant $f_1$ for the first Chern class case becomes an obstruction to the existence of transverse Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature. We prove the existence of transverse Kähler-Ricci solitons (or {\it Sasaki-Ricci soliton}) on compact toric Sasaki manifolds whose basic first Chern form of the nor…
