We describe various constructions in Sasakian geometry. First we generalize the join construction of the first two authors to arbitrary Sasakian manifolds. We then give several examples, including ones which prove the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on manifolds homeomorphic to $S^2\times S^5.$ Then we use a generalization of the join construction due to Lerman, namely contact fibre bundles, to give a theorem constructing toric Sasakian structures. Finally, we explicitly construct regular toric Sasakian structures on all simply connected regular contact manifolds in dimension five.
In this paper we study the Sasakian geometry on S^3-bundles over a Riemann surface of genus g>0 with emphasis on extremal Sasaki metrics. We prove the existence of a countably infinite number of inequivalent contact structures on the total space of such bundles that admit 2-dimensional Sasaki cones each with a Sasaki metric of constant scalar curvature (CSC). This CSC Sasaki metric is most often irregular. We further study the extremal subset in the Sasaki cone showing that if 0<g<5 it exhausts the entire cone. Examples are given where exhaustion fails.
In this paper we obtain theorems of Barth-Lefschetz type in Sasakian geometry. As corollaries, this implis connectedness principle and Frankel's type theorem.
In this paper, we introduce the trans-para-Sasakian manifolds and we study their geometry. These manifolds are an analogue of the trans-Sasakian manifolds in the Riemannian geometry. We shall investigate many curvature properties of these manifolds and we shall give many conditions under which the manifolds are either $η-$Einstein or Einstein manifolds.
In this study, we introduce indefinite sasakian statistical manifolds and lightlike hypersurfaces of an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold. Some relations among induced geometrical objects with respect to dual connections in a lightlike hypersurface of an indefinite sasakian manifold are obtained. Some examples related to these concepts are also presented. Finally, we prove that an invariant lightlike submanifold of indefinite sasakian statistical manifold is an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold.
We extend a result of Patodi for closed Riemannian manifolds to the context of closed contact manifolds by showing the condition that a manifold is an $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifold is spectrally determined. We also prove that the condition that a Sasakian space form has constant $ϕ$-sectional curvature $c$ is spectrally determined.
The purpose of this paper is to study the harmonicity of maps to or from para-Sasakian manifolds. We derive the condition for the tension field of paraholomorphic map between almost para-Hermitian manifold and para-Sasakian manifold. The necessary and sufficient condition for a paraholomorphic map between para-Sasakian manifolds to be parapluriharmonic are shown and a non-trivial example is presented for its illustrations.
In this note I study the Sasakian geometry associated to the standard CR structure on the Heisenberg group, and prove that the Sasaki cone coincides with the set of extremal Sasakian structures. Moreover, the scalar curvature of these extremal metrics is constant if and only if the metric has $Φ$-sectional curvature $-3.$ I also briefly discuss some relations with the well-know sub-Riemannian geometry of the Heisenberg group as well as the standard Sasakian structure induced on compact quotients.
Using $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ and certain rational homology spheres. We then apply our result to show that on these manifolds the moduli space of classes of positive Sasakian structures has infinitely many components. We also apply our results to give lower bounds on the number of components of the moduli spac…
This is a mainly expository article honoring my recently deceased friend and collaborator Krzysztof Galicki who died after a tragic hiking accident. I give a review of our recent work in Sasakian geometry. A few new results are also presented.
Using the Sasakian join construction with homology 3-spheres, we give a countably infinite number of examples of Sasakian manifolds with perfect fundamental group in all odd dimensions greater than 1. These have extremal Sasaki metrics with constant scalar curvature. Moreover, we present further examples of both Sasaki-Einstein and Sasaki-$η$-Einstein metrics.
We extend the notion of (branched) holomorphic Cartan geometry on a complex manifold to the context of Sasakian manifolds. Branched holomorphic Cartan geometries on Sasakian Calabi-Yau manifolds are investigated.
We discuss Sasakian-Einstein geometry under a quasi-regularity assumption. It is shown that the space of all quasi-regular Sasakian-Einstein orbifolds has a natural multiplication on it. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the `product' of two Sasakian-Einstein manifolds to be a smooth Sasakian-Einstein manifold. Using spectral sequence arguments we work out the cohomology ring in many cases of interest. This type of geometry has recently become of interest in the physics of supersymmetric conformal field theories.
3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were studied systematically by the authors in a recent paper as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. This paper throws new light on their geometric structure which reveals to be generally richer compared to the 3-Sasakian subclass. In fact, it turns out that they are multiply foliated by four distinct fundamental foliations. The study of the transversal geometries with respect to these foliations allows us to link the 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds to the more famous hyper-Kaehler and quaternionic-Kaehler geometries. Furthermore, we stron…
We classify all proper-biharmonic Legendre curves in a Sasakian space form and point out some of their geometric properties. Then we provide a method for constructing anti-invariant proper-biharmonic submanifolds in Sasakian space forms. Finally, using the Boothby-Wang fibration, we determine all proper-biharmonic Hopf cylinders over homogeneous real hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces.
We discuss the Sasakian geometry of odd dimensional homotopy spheres. In particular, we give a completely new proof of the existence of metrics of positive Ricci curvature on exotic spheres that can be realized as the boundary of a parallelizable manifold. Furthermore, it is shown that on such homotopy spheres $\scriptstyle{Σ^{2n+1}}$ the moduli space of Sasakian structures has infinitely many positive components determined by inequivalent underlying contact structures. We also prove the existence of Sasakian metrics with positive Ricci curvature on each of the known $\scriptstyle{2^{2m}}$ dis…
A Sasakian structure on a manifold is called {\it positive} if its basic first Chern class can be represented by a positive (1,1)-form with respect to its transverse holomorphic CR-structure. We prove a theorem that says that every positive Sasakian structure can be deformed to a Sasakian structure whose metric has positive Ricci curvature. This allows us by example to give a completely independent proof of a result of Sha and Yang [SY] that for every positive integer k the k-fold connected sum of $S^2\times S^3$ admits metrics of positive Ricci curvature.
3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds were recently studied by the authors as a suitable setting unifying 3-Sasakian and 3-cosymplectic geometries. In this paper some geometric properties of this class of almost 3-contact metric manifolds are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on those more related to physical applications.
We carry on a systematic study of nearly Sasakian manifolds. We prove that any nearly Sasakian manifold admits two types of integrable distributions with totally geodesic leaves which are, respectively, Sasakian or $5$-dimensional nearly Sasakian manifolds. As a consequence, any nearly Sasakian manifold is a contact manifold. Focusing on the $5$-dimensional case, we prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between nearly Sasakian structures and a special class of nearly hypo $SU(2)$-structures. By deforming such a $SU(2)$-structure one obtains in fact a Sasaki-Einstein structure. Fu…
We prove the existence of extremal Sasakian structures occurring on a countably infinite number of distinct contact structures on $T^2\times S^3$ and certain related manifolds. These structures occur in bouquets and exhaust the Sasaki cones in all except one case in which there are no extremal metrics.
We study eta-Einstein geometry as a class of distinguished Riemannian metrics on contact metric manifolds. In particular, we use a previous solution of the Calabi problem for Sasakian geometry to prove the existence of eta-Einstein structures on many different compact manifolds, including exotic spheres. We also relate these results to the existence of Einstein-Weyl structures.
In the literature, there are two different versions of Hard Lefschetz theorems for a compact Sasakian manifold. The first version, due to Kacimi-Alaoui, asserts that the basic cohomology of a compact Sasakian manifold satisfies the transverse Lefschetz property. The second version, established far more recently by Cappelletti-Montano, De Nicola, and Yudin, holds for the De Rham cohomology of a compact Sasakian manifold. In the current paper, using the formalism of odd dimensional symplectic geometry, we prove a Hard Lefschetz theorem for a compact $K$-contact manifold, which implies immediatel…
We apply the Berglund-Hübsch transpose rule from BHK mirror symmetry to show that to an $n-1$-dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifold in weighted projective space defined by an invertible polynomial, we can associate four (possibly) distinct Sasaki manifolds of dimension $2n+1$ which are $n-1$-connected and admit a metric of positive Ricci curvature. We apply this theorem to show that for a given K3 orbifold, there exists four seven dimensional Sasakian manifolds of positive Ricci curvature, two of which are actually Sasaki-Einstein.
In the present paper first, we define the conformal Sasakian manifolds and then we study geometry of invariant, anti-invariant and CR-submanifolds of conformal Sasakian manifolds.
The concept of quasi generalized CR-lightlike was first introduced by the authors in [18]. In this paper, we focus on ascreen and co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite nearly $μ$-Sasakian manifold. We prove an existence theorem for minimal ascreen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifolds admitting a metric connection. Classification theorems on nearly parallel and auto-parallel distributions on a co-screen quasi generalized CR-lightlike submanifold are also given. Several examples are also constructed, where necessary, to illustrate the main ideas.
The purpose of this paper is to study the Sasakian geometry on odd dimensional sphere bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety $N$ with the ultimate, but probably unachievable goal of understanding the existence and non-existence of extremal and constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics. We apply the fiber join construction of Yamazaki \cite{Yam99} for K-contact manifolds to the Sasaki case. This construction depends on the choice of $d+1$ integral Kähler classes $[ω_j]$ on $N$ that are not necessarily colinear in the Kähler cone. We show that the colinear case is equivalent to a subc…
The Hessian geometry is the real analogue of the Kähler one. Sasakian geometry is an odd-dimensional counterpart of the Kähler geometry. In the paper, we study the connection between projective Hessian and Sasakian manifolds analogous to the one between Hessian and Kähler manifolds. In particular, we construct a Sasakian structure on $TM\times \mathbb{R}$ from a projective Hessian structure on $M$. Especially, we are interested in the case of invariant structure on Lie groups. We define semi-Sasakian Lie groups as a generalization of Sasakian Lie groups. Then we construct a semi-Sasakian struc…
In this paper we provide a local construction of a Sasakian manifold given a Kähler manifold. Obatined in this way manifold we call Sasakian lift of Kähler base. Almost contact metric structure is determined by the operation of the lift of vector fields - idea similar to lifts in Ehresmann connections. We show that Sasakian lift inherits geometry very close to its Kähler base. In some sense geometry of the lift is in analogy with geometry of hypersurface in Kähler manifold. There are obtained structure equations between corresponding Levi-Civita connections, curvatures and Ricci tensors of the…
Warped product CR-submanifolds in Kaehlerian manifolds were intensively studied only since 2001 after the impulse given by B.Y. Chen. Immediately after, another line of research, similar to that concerning Sasakian geometry as the odd dimensional version of Kaehlerian geometry, was developed, namely warped product contact CR-submanifolds in Sasakian manifolds. In this note we proved that there exists no proper doubly warped product contact CR-submanifolds in trans-Sasakian manifolds.
We solve the problem posed by Boyer and Galicki about the existence of K-contact simply connected manifolds with no Sasakian structure. Although the result lies in the framework of metric contact geometry, our methods come from contact and symplectic geometry and are based on the method of fat bundles developed by Sternberg, Weinstein and Lerman.
In this paper, we initiate the study of conformal $η$-Ricci soliton and almost conformal $η$-Ricci soliton within the framework of para-Sasakian manifold. We prove that if para-Sasakian metric admits conformal $η$-Ricci soliton, then the manifold is $η$-Einstein and either the soliton vector field $V$ is Killing or it leaves $ϕ$ invariant. Here, we have shown the characteristics of the soliton vector field $V$ and scalar curvature when the manifold admitting conformal $η$-Ricci soliton and vector field is pointwise collinear with the characteristic vector field $ξ$. Next, we show that a para-S…
In this paper, we study warped products of contact skew-CR submanifolds, called contact skew CR-warped products. We establish an inequality for the squared norm of the second fundamental form in terms of the warping function and the slant angle. The equality case in the statement of the inequality is investigated and some applications of derived inequality are given. Furthermore, we provide a non-trivial example of such submanifolds.
We review our study of Sasakian geometry as an agent for proving the existence of Einstein metrics on odd dimensional manifolds. Particular emphasis is given to the Sasakian structures occuring on links of isolated hypersurface singularities.
It is well known that a unit sphere admits Sasakian 3-structure. Also, Sasakian manifolds are locally isometric to a unit sphere under several curvature and critical conditions. So, a natural question is: Does there exist any curvature or critical condition under which a Sasakian 3-manifold represents a geometrical object other than the unit sphere? In this regard, as an extension of the $\ast$-Ricci soliton, the notion of $\ast$-Ricci-Yamabe soliton is introduced and studied on two classes contact metric manifolds. A $(2n + 1)$-dimensional non-Sasakian $N(k)$-contact metric manifold admitting…
In this expository article we discuss the relations between Sasakian geometry, reduced holonomy and supersymmetry. It is well known that the Riemannian manifolds other than the round spheres that admit real Killing spinors are precisely Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, 7-manifolds with a nearly parallel G2 structure, and nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds. We then discuss the relations between the latter two and Sasaki-Einstein geometry.
The purpose of this paper is to study reducibility properties in Sasakian geometry. First we give the Sasaki version of the de Rham Decomposition Theorem; however, we need a mild technical assumption on the Sasaki automorphism group which includes the toric case. Next we introduce the concept of {\it cone reducible} and consider $S^3$ bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety where we give a classification result concerning contact structures admitting the action of a 2-torus of Reeb type. In particular, we can classify all such Sasakian structures up to contact isotopy on $S^3$ bundl…
Using 3-Sasakian reduction techniques we obtain infinite families of new 3-Sasakian manifolds $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ and $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ in dimension 11 and 15 respectively. The metric cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ is a generalization of the Kronheimer hyperkähler metric on the regular maximal nilpotent orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got l}(3,\bbc)}$ whereas the cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ generalizes the hyperkähler metric on the 16-dimensional orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got o}(6,\bbc)}$. These are first ex…
We give an exhaustive description of all simply connected odd dimensional cohomogeneity one manifolds that can possibly support an invariant metric with positive sectional curvature. Among the known examples of odd dimensional manifolds with positive curvature, apart from spheres, there are two infinite families among the 7-dimensional Eschenburg spaces and 13-dimensional Bazaikin spaces and one isolated 7-dimensional Berger space with this property. In addition to these examples, it turns out that only one isolated 7-manifold, and two infinite 7-dimensional families, potentially admit invaria…
This paper is based on a talk presented by the first author at the Short Program on Riemannian Geometry that took place at the Centre de Recherche Mathématiques, Université de Montréal, during the period June 28-July 16, 2004. It is a report on our joint work with János Kollár concerning the existence of an abundance of Einstein metrics on odd dimensional spheres, including exotic spheres.
On simply connected five manifolds Sasakian-Einstein metrics coincide with Riemannian metrics admitting real Killing spinors which are of great interest as models of near horizon geometry for three-brane solutions in superstring theory [KW]. We expand on the recent work of Demailly and Kollár [DK] and Johnson and Kollár [JK1] who give methods for constructing Kähler-Einstein metrics on log del Pezzo surfaces. By [BG1] circle V-bundles over log del Pezzo surfaces with Kähler-Einstein metrics have Sasakian-Einstein metrics on the total space of the bundle. Here these simply connected 5-manifolds…
We show that every Sasakian manifold in dimension $2k+1$ is locally generated by a free real function of $2k$ variables. This function is a Sasakian analogue of the Kähler potential for Kähler geometry. It is also shown that every locally Sasakian-Einstein manifold in $2k+1$ dimensions is generated by a locally Kähler-Einstein manifold in dimension $2k$.
We study the global geometry of surfaces in Sasakian space forms whose mean curvature vector is parallel in the normal bundle (these include the Riemannian Heisenberg space of dimension $2n+1$). We prove a codimension reduction theorem. We introduce two holomorphic quadratic differentials on anti-invariant such surfaces and use them to obtain classification theorems.
Recent renewed interest in Sasakian manifolds is due mainly to the fact that they can provide examples of generalized Einstein manifolds, manifolds which are of great interest in mathematical models of various aspects of physical phenomena. Sasakian manifolds are odd dimensional counterparts of Kählerian manifolds to which they are closely related. The book of Ch. Boyer and K. Galicki, Sasakian Geometry is both the best introduction to the subject and at the same time it gathers state of the art information and results on these manifolds. However, although the authors are well aware that a Sas…
We propose a new method to construct degenerate $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasakian manifolds as fiber products of Boothby-Wang bundles over hyperkähler manifolds. Subsequently, we study homogeneous degenerate $3$-$(α, δ)$-Sasakian manifolds and prove that no non-trivial compact examples exist as well as that there is exactly one family of nilpotent Lie groups with this geometry, the quaternionic Heisenberg groups.
In this paper, we prove that there are no proper $CRS$ bi-warped product submanifolds other than contact CR-biwarped products in Sasakian manifolds. On the other hand, we prove that if $M$ is a $CRS$ bi-warped product of the form $M=N_T \times_{f_1}N^{n_{1}}_\perp\times_{f_2} N^{n_{2}}_θ$ in a cosymplectic manifold $\widetilde M$, then its second fundamental form $h$ satisfies the inequality: $$\|h\|^2\geq 2n_1\|\nabla(\ln f_1)\|^2+2n_2(1+2\cot^2θ)\|\nabla(\ln f_2)\|^2,$$ where $N_T,\, N^{n_{1}}_\perp$ and $N^{n_{2}}_θ$ are invariant, anti-invariant and proper pointwise slant submanifolds of $…
The main purpose of this work is to generalize the $S^3_\bfw$ Sasaki join construction $M\star_\bfl S^3_\bfw$ described in \cite{BoTo14a} when the Sasakian structure on $M$ is regular, to the general case where the Sasakian structure is only quasi-regular. This gives one of the main results, Theorem 3.2, which describes an inductive procedure for constructing Sasakian metrics of constant scalar curvature. In the Gorenstein case ($c_1(\cald)=0$) we construct a polynomial whose coeffients are linear in the components of $\bfw$ and whose unique root in the interval $(1,\infty)$ completely determi…
This is an expository paper describing the geometry of certain Sasakian-Einstein manifolds. Such manifolds have recently become of interest due to Maldacena's AdS/CFT conjecture. They describe near-horizon geometries of branes at conical singularities.
We extend the link between Einstein Sasakian manifolds and Killing spinors to a class of $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifolds, both in Riemannian and Lorentzian settings, characterising them in terms of generalised Killing spinors. We propose a definition of supersymmetric M-theory backgrounds on such a geometry and find a new class of such backgrounds, extending previous work of Haupt, Lukas and Stelle.
