The geodesic flow of a Riemannian metric on a compact manifold $Q$ is said to be toric integrable if it is completely integrable and the first integrals of motion generate a homogeneous torus action on the punctured cotangent bundle $T^*Q\setminus{Q}$. If the geodesic flow is toric integrable, the cosphere bundle admits the structure of a contact toric manifold. By comparing the Betti numbers of contact toric manifolds and cosphere bundles, we are able to provide necessary conditions for the geodesic flow on a compact, connected 3-dimensional manifold to be toric integrable.
The goal of this survey is to give a list of resent results about topology of manifolds admitting different metrics with the same geodesics. We emphasize the role of the theory of integrable systems in obtaining these results.
In this paper, it is proved that a connected 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold or a closed connected semi-Riemannian manifold $M^n$($n>1$) admitting a projective vector field with a non-linearizable singularity is projectively flat.
By studying completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds we prove a conjecture of Toth and Zelditch that toric integrable geodesic flows on tori must have flat metrics.
For the sake of hyperk{ä}hler SYZ conjecture, finding holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations becomes an important issue. Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are real dimension $4n$ non-compact hyperk{ä}hler manifolds which are quaternion analog of toric varieties. The $n$ dimensional residue circle action on it admitting a hyperk{ä}hler moment map. We use the complex part of this moment map to construct a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with generic fiber diffeomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, and study the singular fibers.
This article contains a detailed study, in the toric case, of the test configuration geodesic rays defined by Phong-Sturm. We show that the `Bergman approximations' of Phong-Sturm converge in C^1 to the geodesic ray and that the geodesic ray itself is C^{1,1} and no better. The \kahler metrics associated to the geodesic ray of potentials are discontinuous across certain hypersurfaces and are degenerate on certain open sets. A novelty in the analysis is the connection between Bergman metrics, Bergman kernels and the theory of large deviations.
For any toric automorphism with only real eigenvalues a Riemannian metric with an integrable geodesic flow on the suspension of this automorphism is constructed. A qualitative analysis of such a flow on a three-solvmanifold constructed by the authors in math.DG/9905078 is done. This flow is an example of the geodesic flow, which has vanishing Liouville entropy and, moreover, is integrable but has positive topological entropy. The authors also discuss some open problems on integrability of geodesic flows and related subjects.
Geodesics on the infinite dimensional symmetric space $\hcal$ of Kähler metrics in a fixed Kähler class on a projective Kähler manifold X are solutions of a homogeneous complex Monge-Ampère equation in $X \times A$, where $A \subset \C$ is an annulus. They are analogues of 1PS (one-parameter subgroups) on symmetric spaces $G_{\C}/G$. Donaldson, Arezzo-Tian and Phong-Sturm raised the question whether Monge-Ampère geodesics can be approximated by 1PS geodesics in the symmetric spaces of Bergman metrics. Phong-Sturm proved weak C^0 convergence of Bergman to Monge-Ampère geodesics on a general \ka…
We study compact toric strict locally conformally Kähler manifolds. We show that the Kodaira dimension of the underlying complex manifold is $-\infty$ and that the only compact complex surfaces admitting toric strict locally conformally Kähler metrics are the diagonal Hopf surfaces. We also show that every toric Vaisman manifold has lcK rank 1 and is isomorphic to the mapping torus of an automorphism of a toric compact Sasakian manifold.
In this work, magnetic geodesics over the space of Kähler potentials are studied through a variational method for a generalized Landau-Hall functional. The magnetic geodesic equation is calculated in this setting and its relation to a perturbed complex Monge-Ampère equation is given. Lastly, the magnetic geodesic equation is considered over the special case of toric Kähler potentials over toric Kähler manifolds.
We show that 6-dimensional strict nearly Kähler manifolds admitting effective $\mathbb{T}^3$ actions by automorphisms are completely characterized in the neigbourhood of each point by a function on $\mathbb{R}^3$ satisfying a certain Monge-Ampère type equation.
We present a geometric interpretation of integrability of geodesic flow by quadratic integrals in terms of the web theory and construct integrable billiards on surfaces admitting such integrals.
We generalize the results of Song-Zelditch on geodesics in spaces of Kahler metrics on toric varieties to harmonic maps of any compact Riemannian manifold with boundary into the space of Kahler metrics on a toric variety. We show that the harmonic map equation can always be solved and that such maps may be approximated in the C^2 topology by harmonic maps into the spaces of Bergman metrics. In particular, WZW maps, or equivalently solutions of a homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation on the product of the manifold with a Riemann surface with S^1 boundary admit such approximations. We also show that…
Let $Q$ be a closed manifold admitting a locally-free action of a compact Lie group $G$. In this paper we study the properties of geodesic flows on $Q$ given by Riemannian metrics which are invariant by such an action. In particular, we will be interested in the existence of geodesics which are closed up to the action of some element in the group $G$, since they project to closed magnetic geodesics on the quotient orbifold $Q/G$.
In this paper we study half-geodesics, those closed geodesics that minimize on any subinterval of length $l(γ)/2$. For each nonnegative integer $n$, we construct Riemannian manifolds diffeomorphic to $S^2$ admitting exactly $n$ half-geodesics. Additionally, we construct a sequence of Riemannian manifolds, each of which is diffeomorphic to $S^2$ and admits no half-geodesics, yet which converge in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a limit space with infinitely many half-geodesics.
Using the twistor correspondence, this article gives a one-to-one correspondence between germs of toric anti-self-dual conformal classes and certain holomorphic data determined by the induced action on twistor space. Recovering the metric from the holomorphic data leads to the classical problem of prescribing the Cech coboundary of 0-cochains on an elliptic curve covered by two annuli. The classes admitting Kahler representatives are described; each such class contains a circle of Kahler metrics. This gives new local examples of scalar-flat Kahler surfaces and generalises work of Joyce who con…
Let X be a toric surface with Delzant polygon P and u(t) be a solution of the Calabi flow equation on P. Suppose the Calabi flow exists in [0, T). By studying local estimates of the Riemann curvature and the geodesic distance under the Calabi flow, we prove a uniform interior estimate of u(t) for t < T.
It's well-known in \kahler geometry that the infinite dimensional symmetric space $\hcal$ of smooth \kahler metrics in a fixed \kahler class on a polarized \kahler manifold is well approximated by finite dimensional submanifolds $\bcal_k \subset \hcal$ of Bergman metrics of height $k$. Then it's natural to ask whether geodesics in $\hcal$ can be approximated by Bergman geodesics in $\bcal_k$. For any polarized \kahler manifold, the approximation is in the $C^0$ topology. While Song-Zelditch proved the $C^2$ convergence for the torus-invariant metrics over toric varieties. In this article, we s…
In the present paper we study geodesic mappings of special pseudo-Riemannian manifolds called $V_n(K)$-spaces. We prove that the set of solutions of the system of equations of geodesic mappings on $V_n(K)$-spaces $(K\neq0)$ forms a special Jordan algebra and the set of solutions generated by consircular fields is an ideal of this algebra. We show that pseudo-Riemannian manifolds admitting a concircular field of the basic type form the class of manifolds closed with respect to the geodesic mappings.
We study constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces and in particular maximal hypersurfaces immersed in pp-wave spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition. We prove the non-existence of compact spacelike hypersurfaces whose constant mean curvature is non-zero and also that every compact maximal hypersurface is totally geodesic. Moreover, we give an extension of the classical Calabi-Bernstein theorem to this class of pp-wave spacetimes.
We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of hyperbolic type, i.e M is a manifold admitting another metric of strictly negative curvature. In this paper we study the geodesic flow restricted to the set of geodesics which are minimal on the universal covering. In particular for surfaces we show that the topological entropy of the minimal geodesics coincides with the volume entropy of (M, g) generalizing work of Freire and Mane.
Starting from a homogeneous polynomial in momenta of arbitrary order we extract multi-component hydrodynamic-type systems which describe 2-dimensional geodesic flows admitting the initial polynomial as integral. All these hydrodynamic-type systems are semi-Hamiltonian, thus implying that they are integrable according to the generalized hodograph method. Moreover, they are integrable in a constructive sense as polynomial first integrals allow to construct generating equations of conservation laws. According to the multiplicity of the roots of the polynomial integral, we separate integrable part…
We study $n$-dimensional Kähler manifolds whose geodesic flows possess $n$ first integrals in involution that are fibrewise hermitian forms and simultaneously normalizable. Under some mild assumption, one can associate with such a manifold an $n$-dimensional commutative Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms. This, combined with the given $n$ first integrals, makes the geodesic flow integrable. If the manifold is compact, then it becomes a toric variety.

We consider a unit normal vector field of (local) hyperfoliation on a given Riemannian manifold as a submanifold in the unit tangent bundle with Sasaki metric. We give an explicit expression of the second fundamental form for this submanifold and a rather simple condition its totally geodesic property in the case of a totally umbilic hyperfoliation. A corresponding example shows the non-triviality of this condition. In the 2-dimensional case, we give a complete description of Riemannian manifolds admitting a geodesic unit vector field with totally geodesic property.
We show that the complex projective space has maximal degree (volume) among all n-dimensional Kahler-Einstein Fano manifolds admitting a holomorphic C^*-action with a finite number of fixed points. The toric version of this result, translated to the realm of convex geometry, thus confirms Ehrhart's volume conjecture for a large class of rational polytopes, including duals of lattice polytopes. The case of spherical varieties/multiplicity free symplectic manifolds is also discussed. The proof uses Moser-Trudinger type inequalities for Stein domains and also leads to criticality results for mean…

Convolutions are fundamental elements in deep learning architectures. Here, we present a theoretical framework for combining extrinsic and intrinsic approaches to manifold convolution through isometric embeddings into tori. In this way, we define a convolution operator for a manifold of arbitrary topology and dimension. We also explain geometric and topological conditions that make some local definitions of convolutions which rely on translating filters along geodesic paths on a manifold, computationally intractable. A result of Alan Turing from 1938 underscores the need for such a toric isome…
Let (X,L) be a polarized projective complex manifold. We show, by a simple toric one-dimensional example, that Mabuchi's K-energy functional on the geodesically complete space of bounded positive (1,1)-forms in the first Chern class of L, endowed with the Mabuchi metric, is not strictly convex modulo automorphisms. However, under some further assumptions the strict convexity in question does hold in the toric case. This leads to a uniqueness result saying that a finite energy minimizer of the K-energy (which exists on any toric polarized manifold (X,L) which is uniformly K-stable) is uniquely …
A complete Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ is a $Y^x_l$-manifold if every unit speed geodesic $γ(t)$ originating at $γ(0)=x\in M$ satisfies $γ(l)=x$ for $0\neq l\in \R$. Bérard-Bergery proved that if $(M^m,g), m>1$ is a $Y^x_l$-manifold, then $M$ is a closed manifold with finite fundamental group, and the cohomology ring $H^*(M, \Q)$ is generated by one element. We say that $(M,g)$ is a $Y^x$-manifold if for every $ε>0$ there exists $l>ε$ such that for every unit speed geodesic $γ(t)$ originating at $x$, the point $γ(l)$ is $ε$-close to $x$. We use Low's notion of refocussing Lorentzian space-tim…
Let M be a complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact non-empty geodesic boundary and k toric cusps, and let T be a geometric partially truncated triangulation of M. We show that the variety of solutions of consistency equations for T is a smooth manifold or real dimension 2k near the point representing the unique complete structure on M. As a consequence, the relation between deformations of triangulations and deformations of representations is completely understood, at least in a neighbourhood of the complete structure. This allows us to prove, for example, that small deformat…
Various curvature conditions are studied on metrics admitting a symmetry group. We begin by examining a method of diagonalizing cohomogeneity-one Einstein manifolds and determine when this method can and cannot be used. Examples, including the well-known Stenzel metrics, are discussed. Next, we present a simplification of the Einstein condition on a compact four manifold with $T^{2}$-isometry to a system of second-order elliptic equations in two-variables with well-defined boundary conditions. We then study the Einstein and extremal Kahler conditions on Kahler toric manifolds. After constructi…
The purpose of this paper is to study reducibility properties in Sasakian geometry. First we give the Sasaki version of the de Rham Decomposition Theorem; however, we need a mild technical assumption on the Sasaki automorphism group which includes the toric case. Next we introduce the concept of {\it cone reducible} and consider $S^3$ bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety where we give a classification result concerning contact structures admitting the action of a 2-torus of Reeb type. In particular, we can classify all such Sasakian structures up to contact isotopy on $S^3$ bundl…
We prove a generalized version of the Morse index theorem for geodesics endowed with a non positive definite metric tensor (semi-Riemannian manifolds). We apply the result to obtain lower estimates on the number of geodesics joining two fixed non conjugate points in certain classes of manifolds. More specifically, we consider semi-Riemannian manifolds $(M,\mathfrak g)$ admitting a smooth distribution spanned by commuting Killing vector fields and containing a maximal negative distribution for $\mathfrak$. In particular we obtain Morse relations for stationary semi-Riemannian manifolds and for …
We present a classification of compact Kaehler manifolds admitting a hamiltonian 2-form (which were classified locally in part I of this work). This involves two components of independent interest. The first is the notion of a rigid hamiltonian torus action. This natural condition, for torus actions on a Kaehler manifold, was introduced locally in part I, but such actions turn out to be remarkably well behaved globally, leading to a fairly explicit classification: up to a blow-up, compact Kaehler manifolds with a rigid hamiltonian torus action are bundles of toric Kaehler manifolds. The second…
In this paper we study K-polystability of arbitrary (possibly non-projective) compact Kähler manifolds admitting holomorphic vector fields. As a main result, we show that existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric implies 'geodesic K-polystability', in a sense that is expected to be equivalent to K-polystability in general. In particular, in the spirit of an expectation of Chen-Tang we show that geodesic K-polystability implies algebraic K-polystability for polarized manifolds. Hence our main result recovers a possibly stronger version of results of Berman-Darvas-Lu in this …
