Various curvature conditions are studied on metrics admitting a symmetry group. We begin by examining a method of diagonalizing cohomogeneity-one Einstein manifolds and determine when this method can and cannot be used. Examples, including the well-known Stenzel metrics, are discussed. Next, we present a simplification of the Einstein condition on a compact four manifold with $T^{2}$-isometry to a system of second-order elliptic equations in two-variables with well-defined boundary conditions. We then study the Einstein and extremal Kahler conditions on Kahler toric manifolds. After constructing explicitly new extremal Kahler and constant scalar curvature metrics, we demonstrate how these metrics can be obtained by continuously deforming the Fubini-Study metric on complex projective space in dimension three. We also define a generalization of Kahler toric manifolds, which we call fiberwise Kahler toric manifolds, and construct new explicit extremal Kahler and constant scalar curvature metrics on both compact and non-compact manifolds in all even dimensions. We also calculate the Futaki invariant on manifolds of this type. After describing an Hermitian non-Kahler analogue to fiberwise Kahler toric geometry, we construct constant scalar curvature Hermitian metrics with $J$-invariant Riemannian tensor. In dimension four, we write down explicitly new constant scalar curvature Hermitian metrics with $J$-invariant Ricci tensor. Finally, we integrate the scalar curvature equation on a large class of cohomogeneity-one metrics.
In the late 1990s, B. Y. Chen introduced the notion of special slant surfaces in Kähler surfaces and classified non-minimal proper special slant surfaces with constant mean curvature in $2$-dimensional complex space forms. In this paper, we completely classify proper special slant surfaces with non-constant mean curvature in $2$-dimensional complex space forms.
We show that the indices of certain twisted Dirac operators vanish on a $Spin$-manifold $M$ of positive sectional curvature if the symmetry rank of $M$ is $\geq 2$ or if the symmetry rank is one and $M$ is two connected. We also give examples of simply connected manifolds of positive Ricci curvature which do not admit a metric of positive sectional curvature and positive symmetry rank.
In this Note, we prove that every m-th root Finsler metric with isotropic Landsberg curvature reduces to a Landsberg metric. Then, we show that every m-th root metric with almost vanishing H-curvature has vanishing H-curvature.
In this paper, we prove that the translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^4$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(2)$ symmetry.
We use a local argument to prove if an $r$-dimensional torus acts isometrically and effectively on a connected $n$-dimensional manifold which has positive $k^\mathrm{th}$-intermediate Ricci curvature at some point, then $r \leq \lfloor \frac{n+k}{2} \rfloor$. This symmetry rank bound generalizes those established by Grove and Searle for positive sectional curvature and Wilking for quasipositive curvature. As a consequence, we show that the symmetry rank bound in the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature holds for those which also have positive inter…
We show that any smooth solution to the mean curvature flow equations coming out of a rotationally symmetric double cone is also rotationally symmetric.
We derive formulas for the mean curvature of special Lagrangian 3-folds in the general case where the ambient 6-manifold has intrinsic torsion. Consequently, we are able to characterize those SU(3)-structures for which every special Lagrangian 3-fold is a minimal submanifold. In the process, we obtain an obstruction to the local existence of special Lagrangian 3-folds.
In this paper, we generalize a previous result to higher dimension. We prove that uniformly 3-convex translating solitons of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which arise as blow up limit of embedded, mean convex mean curvature flow must have $SO(n-1)$ symmetry.
We prove a result on equivariant deformations of flat bundles, and as a corollary, we obtain two ``splitting in a finite cover'' theorems for isometric group actions on Riemannian manifolds with infinite fundamental groups, where the manifolds are either compact of nonnegative Ricci curvature, or complete of nonnegative sectional curvature.
We study the curvature of almost Hermitian manifolds and their special analogues via intrinsic torsion and representation theory. By deriving different forumlae for the skew-symmetric part of the star-Ricci curvature, we find that some of these contributions are dependent on the approach used, and for the almost Hermitian case we obtain tables that differ from those of Falcitelli, Farinola and Salamon. We show how the exterior algebra may used to explain some of these variations.
We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.
We show that any complete, immersed self-expander to the inverse mean curvature flow, which has one end asymptotic to a cylinder, or has two ends asymptotic to two coaxial cylinders, must be rotationally symmetric.
The self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows have been defined and studied on the Euclidean space. In this paper we initiate a general treatment of the self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows on Riemannian cone manifolds. As a typical result we extend the well-known result of Huisken about the asymptotic behavior for the singularities of the mean curvature flows. We also extend the results on special Lagrangian submanifolds on $\mathbb C^n$ to the toric Calabi-Yau cones over Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.
In this paper, first we derive an explicit formula for the flag curvature of a homogeneous Finsler space with infinite series $(α, β)$-metric and exponential metric. Next, we deduce it for naturally reductive homogeneous Finsler space with the above mentioned metrics.
Using the flow method, we prove some existence results for the problem of prescribing the mean curvature on the unit ball. More precisely, we prove that there exists a conformal metric on the unit ball such that its mean curvature is $f$, when $f$ possesses certain reflection or rotation symmetry.
We classify closed, simply connected $n$-manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature admitting an isometric torus action of maximal symmetry rank in dimensions $2\leq n\leq 6$. In dimensions $3k$, $k=1,2$ there is only one such manifold and it is diffeomorphic to the product of $k$ copies of the 3-sphere.
We study the behavior of connections and curvature under the HK/QK correspondence, proving simple formulae expressing the Levi-Civita connection and Riemann curvature tensor on the quaternionic Kähler side in terms of the initial hyper-Kähler data. Our curvature formula refines a well-known decomposition theorem due to Alekseevsky. As an application, we compute the norm of the curvature tensor for a series of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds arising from flat hyper-Kähler manifolds. We use this to deduce that these manifolds are of cohomogeneity one.
We study invariant solutions to the Positive Hermitian Curvature Flow, introduced by Ustinovskiy, on complex Lie groups. We show in particular that the canonical scale-static metrics on the special linear groups, arising from the Killing form, are dynamically unstable. This disproves a conjecture of Ustinovskiy. We also construct certain perfect Lie groups that admit at least two distinct invariant solitons for the flow, only one of which is algebraic. This is the second known example of a geometric flow with non-algebraic, homogeneous solitons. The first being the G2-Laplacian flow.
By a symmetric double graph we mean a hypersurface which is mirror-symmetric and the two symmetric parts are graphs over the hyperplane of symmetry. We prove that there is a weak solution of mean curvature flow that preserves these properties and singularities only occur on the hyperplane of symmetry. The result can be used to construct smooth solutions to the free Neumann boundary problem on a supporting hyperplane with singular boundary. For the construction we introduce and investigate a notion named "vanity" and which is similar to convexity. Moreover, we rely on Sáez' and Schnürer's "mean…
As first noted in Korevaar, Kusner and Solomon ("KKS"), constant mean curvature implies a homological conservation law for hypersurfaces in ambient spaces with Killing fields. In Theorem 3.5 here, we generalize that law by relaxing the topological restrictions assumed in [KKS] and by allowing a weighted mean curvature functional. We also prove a partial converse (Theorem 4.1) which roughly says that when flux is conserved along a Killing field, a hypersurface splits into two regions: one with constant (weighted) mean curvature, and one preserved by the Killing field. We demonstrate our theory b…
We study the uniqueness of minimal submanifolds and the stability of the mean curvature flow in several well-known model spaces of manifolds of special holonomy. These include the Stenzel metric on the cotangent bundle of spheres, the Calabi metric on the cotangent bundle of complex projective spaces, and the Bryant--Salamon metrics on vector bundles over certain Einstein manifolds. In particular, we show that the zero sections, as calibrated submanifolds with respect to their respective ambient metrics, are unique among compact minimal submanifolds and are dynamically stable under the mean cu…
This is the first part of a series of papers where we compute Euler characteristics, signatures, elliptic genera, and a number of other invariants of smooth manifolds that admit Riemannian metrics with positive sectional curvature and large torus symmetry. In the first part, the focus is on even-dimensional manifolds in dimensions up to 16. Many of the calculations are sharp and they require less symmetry than previous classifications. When restricted to certain classes of manifolds that admit non-negative curvature, these results imply diffeomorphism classifications. Also studied is a closely…
In this study, the new characterizations of special curves are investigated without using the curvatures of these special curves: general helices, slant helices, Bertrand curves, Mannheim curves. The curvatures are given by the help of the norms of the derivatives of Frenet vectors.
In 1965, S.-S. Chern posed a question concerning the extent to which fundamental groups of manifolds admitting positive sectional curvature look like spherical space form groups. The original question was answered in the negative by Shankar in 1998, but there are a number of positive results in the presence of symmetry. These classifications fall into categories according to the strength of their conclusions. We give an overview of these results in the case of torus symmetry and prove new results in each of these categories.
We define the notion of special Lagrangian curvature, showing how it may be interpreted as an alternative higher dimensional generalisation of two dimensional Gaussian curvature. We obtain first a local rigidity result for this curvature when the ambiant manifold has negative sectional curvature. We then show how this curvature relates to the canonical special Legendrian structure of spherical subbundles of the tangent bundle of the ambiant manifold. This allows us to establish a strong compactness result. In the case where the special Lagrangian angle equals $(n-1)π/2$, we obtain compactness …
We propose a unified definition for discrete analogues of constant mean curvature surfaces in spaces of constant curvature as a special case of discrete special isothermic nets. Bäcklund transformations and Lawson's correspondence are discussed. It is shown that the definition generalizes previous definitions and a construction for discrete cmc surfaces of revolution in space forms is provided.
A spacetime denotes a pure radiation field if its energy momentum tensor represents a situation in which all the energy is transported in one direction with the speed of light. In 1989, Wils and later in 1997 Ludwig and Edgar studied the physical properties of pure radiation metrics, which are conformally related to a vacuum spacetime. In the present paper we investigate the curvature properties of special type of pure radiation metrics presented by Ludwig and Edgar. It is shown that such a pure radiation spacetime is semisymmetric, Ricci simple, $R$-space by Venzi and its Ricci tensor is Riem…
There are five unimodular simply connected three dimensional unimodular non abelian Lie groups: the nilpotent Lie group $\mathrm{Nil}$, the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, the universal covering group $\widetilde{\mathrm{PSL}}(2,\mathbb{R})$ of the special linear group, the solvable Lie group $\mathrm{Sol}$ and the universal covering group $\widetilde{\mathrm{E}_0}(2)$ of the connected component of the Euclidean group. For each $G$ among these Lie groups, we give explicitly the list of all Lorentzian left invariant metrics on $G$, up to un automorphism of $G$. Moreover, for any Lorentz…
We show that any integral Brakke flow coming out of a rotationally symmetric double cone with entropy at most two must stay rotationally symmetric for all time, provided the flow is smooth for a short time. We also show the existence of a non-self-similar flow coming out of a double cone with entropy at most two, and give an example of such a flow with a finite time singularity.
This is a sequel to [1] and [2], which study the second boundary problem for special Lagrangian curvature potential equation. As consequences, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the smooth uniformly convex solution by the method of continuity through carrying out a-priori estimate on the solutions.
In this paper we investigate the singularities of Lagrangian mean curvature flows in $\mathbf{C}^m$ by means of smooth singularity models. Type I singularities can only occur at certain times determined by invariants in the cohomology of the initial data. In the type II case, these smooth singularity models are asymptotic to special Lagrangian cones; hence all type II singularities are modeled by unions of special Lagrangian cones.
We prove some existence results for the Webster scalar curvature problem on the Heisenberg group and on the unit sphere of ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, under the assumption of some natural symmetries of the prescribed curvatures. We use variational and perturbation techniques.
By variational methods, for a kind of Webster scalar curvature problems on the CR sphere with cylindrically symmetric curvature, we construct some multi-peak solutions as the parameter is sufficiently small under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the solutions.
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
In this article, we examine complete, mean-convex self-expanders for the mean curvature flow whose ends have decaying principal curvatures. We prove a Liouville-type theorem associated to this class of self-expanders. As an application, we show that mean-convex self-expanders which are asymptotic to $O(n)$-invariant cones are rotationally symmetric.
An example of a four-dimensional special complex manifold with Norden metric of constant holomorphic sectional curvature is constructed via a two-parametric family of solvable Lie algebras. The curvature properties of the obtained manifold are studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the manifold to be isotropic Kählerian are given.
In this paper, we study a class of Finsler metrics which contains the class of Berwald metrics as a special case. We prove that every Finsler metric in this class is a generalized Douglas-Weyl metric. Then we study isotropic flag curvature Finsler metrics in this class. Finally we show that on this class of Finsler metrics, the notion of Landsberg and weakly Landsberg curvature are equivalent.
Two necessary conditions for the induced metrics of parallel mean curvature surfaces in a complex space form of complex two-dimension are observed. One is similar to the Ricci condition of the classical surface theory in Euclidean three-space and the other is related to the Liouville metric. Conversely, we prove that a special type of the Liouville metric on a domain in the Euclidean two-plane whose Gaussian curvature satisfies the differential equation similar to the Ricci condition is explicitly determined by an elliptic function. We have isometric immersions from a simply connected two-dime…
We study closed, simply connected manifolds with positive $2^\mathrm{nd}$-intermediate Ricci curvature and large symmetry rank. In odd dimensions, we show that they are spheres. In even dimensions other than $6$, we show that they must have positive Euler characteristic. Under stronger assumptions on the symmetry rank, we show that such even dimensional manifolds must have trivial odd degree integral cohomology, and if the second Betti number is no more than $1$, they are either spheres or complex projective spaces. In the process, we establish new tools for studying isometric actions on close…
In this paper, we take into account the opinion of involute-evolute curves which lie on fully surfaces and by taking into account the Darboux frames of them we illustrate these curves as special involute-evolute partner D-curves in E3. Besides, we find the relations between the normal curvatures, the geodesic curvatures and the geodesic torsions of these curves. Finally, some consequences and examples are given.
In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space foliated by pieces of circles and that satisfy a Weingarten condition of type $a H+b K=c$, where $a,b$ and $c$ are constant and $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature respectively. We prove that a such surface must be a surface of revolution, a Riemann minimal surface or a generalized cone.
In this paper, under suitable settings, we can obtain the existence of solutions to a class of prescribed Weingarten curvature equations in warped product manifolds of special type by the standard degree theory based on the a priori estimates for the solutions. This is to say that the existence of closed hypersurface (which is graphic with respect to the base manifold and whose $k$-th Weingarten curvature satisfies some constraint) in a given warped product manifold of special type can be assured.
In this paper, first we prove the existence of invariant vector field on a homogeneous Finsler space with infinite series $(α, β)$-metric and exponential metric. Next, we deduce an explicit formula for the the $S$-curvature of homogeneous Finsler space with these metrics. Using this formula, we further derive the formula for mean Berwald curvature of the homogeneous Finsler space with the above mentioned metrics.
We give necessary conditions on complete embedded \cmc surfaces with three or four ends subject to reflection symmetries. The respective submoduli spaces are two-dimensional varieties in the moduli spaces of general \cmc surfaces. We characterize fundamental domains of our \cmc surfaces by associated great circle polygons in the three-sphere.
Let (M,g) be a steady gradient Ricci soliton of dimension n \geq 4 which has positive sectional curvature and is asymptotically cylindrical. Under these assumptions, we show that (M,g) is rotationally symmetric. In particular, our result applies to steady gradient Ricci solitons in dimension 4 which are κ-noncollapsed and have positive isotropic curvature.
