Many interesting physical systems have mathematical descriptions as finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Poincare who started the modern theory of dynamical systems and symplectic geometry developed a particular viewpoint combining geometric and dynamical systems ideas in the study of Hamiltonian systems. After Poincare the field of dynamical systems and the field of symplectic geometry developed separately. Both fields have rich theories and the time seems ripe to develop the common core with highly integrated ideas from both fields. We discuss problems which show how dynamical systems questions and symplectic ideas come together in a nontrivial way.
We construct an infinite family of odd-symplectic forms (also known as Hamiltonian structures) on the 3-sphere that do not admit a symplectic cobordism to the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere. This answers in the negative a question raised by Joel Fish motivated by the search for minimal characteristic flows.
We prove the existence of minimal symplectomorphisms and strictly ergodic contactomorphisms on manifolds which admit a locally free $\mathbb{S}^1$--action by symplectomorphisms and contactomorphisms, respectively. The proof adapts the conjugation method, introduced by Anosov and Katok, to the contact and symplectic setting.
Motivated by Mather theory of minimizing measures for symplectic twist dynamics, we study conformally symplectic flows on a cotangent bundle. These dynamics are the most general dynamics for which it makes sense to look at (asymptotic) dynamical Maslov index. Our main result is the existence of invariant measures with vanishing index without any convexity hypothesis, in the general framework of conformally symplectic flows. A degenerate twist-condition hypothesis implies the existence of ergodic invariant measures with zero dynamical Maslov index and thus the existence of points with zero dyna…
We prove that toric symplectic manifolds admit Hamiltonian pseudo-rotations with a finite, and in a sense minimal, number of ergodic measures. The set of ergodic measures of these pseudo-rotations consists of the measure induced by the symplectic volume form and the Dirac measures supported at the fixed points of the torus action. Our construction relies on the conjugation method of Anosov and Katok.
Let L be a D-dimensional submanifold of a 2D-dimensional exact symplectic manifold (M, w) and let f be a symplectic diffeomorphism onf M. In this article, we deal with the link between the dynamics of f restricted to L and the geometry of L (is L Lagrangian, is it smooth, is it a graph...?). We prove different kinds of results. - for D=3, we prove that if a torus that carries some characteristic loop, then either L is Lagrangian or the restricted dynamics g of f to L can not be minimal (i.e. all the orbits are dense) with (g^k) equilipschitz; - for a Tonelli Hamiltonian of the cotangent bundle…
We construct a symplectic integrator for non-separable Hamiltonian systems combining an extended phase space approach of Pihajoki and the symmetric projection method. The resulting method is semiexplicit in the sense that the main time evolution step is explicit whereas the symmetric projection step is implicit. The symmetric projection binds potentially diverging copies of solutions, thereby remedying the main drawback of the extended phase space approach. Moreover, our semiexplicit method is symplectic in the original phase space. This is in contrast to existing extended phase space integrat…
We classify global surfaces of section for the Reeb flow of the standard contact form on the 3-sphere, defining the Hopf fibration. As an application, we prove the degree-genus formula for complex projective curves, using an elementary degeneration process inspired by the language of holomorphic buildings in symplectic field theory.
We construct symplectomorphisms in dimension $d\geq 4$ having a semi-local robustly transitive partially hyperbolic set containing $C^2$-robust homoclinic tangencies of any codimension $c$ with $0<c\leq d/2$.
We study invariant manifolds of conformal symplectic dynamical systems on a symplectic manifold (M, $ω$) of dimension $\ge$4. This class of systems is the 1-dimensional extension of symplectic dynamical systems for which the symplectic form is transformed colinearly to itself. In this context, we first examine how the $ω$-isotropy of an invariant manifold N relates to the entropy of the dynamics it carries. Central to our study is Yomdin's inequality, and a refinement obtained using that the local entropies have no effect transversally to the characteristic foliation of N. When (M, $ω$) is exa…
Time-reversal symmetry arises naturally as a structural property in many dynamical systems of interest. While the importance of hard-wiring symmetry is increasingly recognized in machine learning, to date this has eluded time-reversibility. In this paper we propose a new neural network architecture for learning time-reversible dynamical systems from data. We focus in particular on an adaptation to symplectic systems, because of their importance in physics-informed learning.
