Wavelet and frames have become a widely used tool in mathematics, physics, and applied science during the last decade. This article gives an overview over some well known results about the continuous and discrete wavelet transforms and groups acting on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show how this action can give rise to wavelets, and in particular, MSF wavelets)in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
W. C. Lang determined wavelets on Cantor dyadic group by using Multiresolution analysis method. In this paper we have given characterization of wavelet sets on Cantor dyadic group providing another method for the construction of wavelets. All the wavelets originating from wavelet sets are not necessarily associated with a multiresolution analysis. Relation between multiresolution analysis and, wavelets determined from wavelet sets is established along with relevant examples.
For Vilenkin group only the existence of multiwavelets associated with multiresolution analysis (MRA) is known. In this paper, we have shown that by using wavelet sets we can also construct single wavelet in case of Vilenkin group which are not associated with MRA.We have given characterization of single and multi-wavelet sets on Vilenkin group. Further, we have studied generalized scaling sets, some of their properties and relation between wavelet sets and generalized scaling sets.
A new method of connecting two wavelet sets with a continuous path of wavelet sets is given. The method is based on a pure set theoretic fact known as the Schroder-Cantor-Bernstein theorem and on a characterization of wavelet sets in terms of one-to-one measurable bijections of [0,1) satisfying some extra conditions.
Most of the examples of wavelet sets are for dilation sets which are groups. We find a necessary and sufficient condition under which subspace wavelet sets exist for dilation sets of the form $A B$, which are not necessarily groups. We explain the construction by a few examples.
Single wavelet sets, and thus single wavelets, are shown to exist for the actions of all crystallographic groups on $\mathbb R^2$ under all integer dilations. Examples of such sets satisfying the additional requirement that they are finite unions of convex sets are presented for each of the groups under dilation by two.
We give a detailed description of the local commutant approach to wavelet theory using operator algebraic methods. We include a new result on interpolation pairs of wavelet sets: Every pair in the generalized Journe family of wavelet sets is an interpolation pair. In the last section, we give a discussion of several open problems on wavelets and frame-wavelets.
A traditional wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a system of unitary operators defined in terms of translation and dilation operations. A Coxeter/fractal-surface wavelet is obtained by defining fractal surfaces on foldable figures, which tesselate the embedding space by reflections in their bounding hyperplanes instead of by translations along a lattice. Although both theories look different at their onset, there exist connections and communalities which are exhibited in this semi-expository paper. In particular, there …
In these lecture notes we present connections between the theory of iterated function systems, in particular those attractors that are graphs of multivariate real-valued fractal functions, foldable figures and affine Weyl groups, and wavelet sets.
Wavelet sets that are finite unions of convex sets are constructed in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 2$, for dilation by any expansive matrix that has a power equal to a scalar times the identity and also has all singular values greater than $\sqrt n$. In particular, we produce simple wavelet sets in any dimension for dilation by any real scalar greater than 1.
A wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a collection, or system, of unitary operators. We will describe the operator-interpolation approach to wavelet theory using the local commutant of a system. This is really an abstract application of the theory of operator algebras to wavelet theory. The concrete applications of this method include results obtained using specially constructed families of wavelet sets. A frame is a sequence of vectors in a Hilbert space which is a compression of a basis for a larger space. This is not …
We introduce a method to construct large classes of MSF wavelets of the Hardy space H^2(\R) and symmetric MSF wavelets of L^2(\R), and discuss the classification of such sets. As application, we show that there are uncountably many wavelet sets of L^2(\R) and H^2(\R). We also enumerate all symmetric wavelets of L^2(\R) with at most three intervals in the positive axis as well as 3-interval wavelet sets of H^2(\R). Finally, we construct families of MSF wavelets of L^2(\R) whose Fourier transform does not vanish in any neighbourhood of the origin.
This paper is devoted to the study of geometry properties of wavelet and Riesz wavelet sets on locally compact abelian groups. The catalyst for our research is a result by Wang ([32], Theorem 1.1) in the Euclidean wavelet theory. Here, we extend the result to wavelet and Riesz wavelet collection of sets in infinite locally compact abelian groups.
The wavelet group and wavelet representation associated with shifts coming from a two dimensional crystal symmetry group $Γ$ and dilations by powers of 3, are defined and studied. The main result is an explicit decomposition of the $3Γ-$wavelet representation into irreducible representations of the wavelet group.
It is proven that if an interpolation map between two wavelet sets preserves the union of the sets, then the pair must be an interpolation pair. We also construct an example of a pair of wavelet sets for which the congruence domains of the associated interpolation map and its inverse are equal, and yet the pair is not an interpolation pair. The first result solves affirmatively a problem that the second author had posed several years ago, and the second result solves an intriguing problem of D. Han. The key to this counterexample is a special technical lemma on constructing wavelet sets. Sever…
In this short note we discuss the interplay between finite Coxeter groups and construction of wavelet sets, generalized multiresolution analysis and sampling.
Let $\mathscr Q$ be the quaternion Heisenberg group, and let $\mathbf P$ be the affine automorphism group of $\mathscr Q$. We develop the theory of continuous wavelet transform on the quaternion Heisenberg group via the unitary representations of $\mathbf P$ on $L^2(\mathscr Q)$. A class of radial wavelets is constructed. The inverse wavelet transform is simplified by using radial wavelets. Then we investigate the Radon transform on $\mathscr Q$. A Semyanistri-Lizorkin space is introduced, on which the Radon transform is a bijection. We deal with the Radon transform on $\mathscr Q$ both by the…
We prove that any Parseval wavelet frame is the projection of an orthonormal wavelet basis for a representation of the Baumslag-Solitar group $$BS(1,2)=< u,t | utu^{-1}=t^2>.$$ We give a precise description of this representation in some special cases, and show that for wavelet sets, it is related to symbolic dynamics. We show that the structure of the representation depends on the analysis of certain finite orbits for the associated symbolic dynamics. We give concrete examples of Parseval wavelets for which we compute the orthonormal dilations in detail; we show that there are examples of Par…
The aim of this exposition is to explain basic ideas behind the concept of diffusive wavelets on spheres in the language of representation theory of Lie groups and within the framework of the group Fourier transform given by Peter-Weyl decomposition of $L^2(G)$ for a compact Lie group $G$. After developing a general concept for compact groups and their homogeneous spaces we give concrete examples for tori -which reflect the situation on $R^n$- and for spheres $S^2$ and $S^3$.
We consider a class of $(1,M)$-elementary step functions on the $p$-adic Vilenkin group. We prove that $(1,M)$-elementary step function generates a MRA on $p$-adic Vilenkin group iff it is generated by a rooted tree on the set of vertices $\{0,1,\dots p-1\}$ with 0 as a root. We study singly-generated wavelet systems on $\Bbb R^2$ that are naturally associated with rank-one wavelet systems on the Heisenberg group $N$. We prove a necessary condition on the generator in order that any such system be a Parseval frame. Given a suitable subset $I$ of the dual of $N$, we give an explicit construction for Parseval frame wavelets that are associated with $I$. We say that $g\in L^2(I\times \Bbb R)$ is Gabor field over $I$ if, for a.e. $λ\in I$, $|λ|^{1/2} g(λ,\cdot)$ is the Gabor generator of a Parseval frame for $L^2(\Bbb R)$, and that $I$ is a Heisenberg wavelet set if ev…
The approach to p-adic wavelet theory from the point of view of representation theory is discussed. p-Adic wavelet frames can be constructed as orbits of some p-adic groups of transformations. These groups are automorphisms of the tree of balls in the p-adic space. In the present paper we consider deformations of the standard p-adic metric in many dimensions and construct some corresponding groups of transformations. We build several examples of p-adic wavelet bases. We show that the constructed wavelets are eigenvectors of some pseudodifferential operators.
Let $q\geq 2$ be an integer, and $\Bbb F_q^d$, $d\geq 1$, be the vector space over the cyclic space $\Bbb F_q$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we obtain sufficient conditions on $E \subset \Bbb F_q^d$ such that the inverse Fourier transform of $1_E$ generates a tight wavelet frame in $L^2(\Bbb F_q^d)$. We call these sets (tight) wavelet frame sets. The conditions are given in terms of multiplicative and translational tilings, which is analogous with Theorem 1.1 ([20]) by Wang in the setting of finite fields. In the second part of the paper, we exhibit a constructive method for o…
By using a coset of closed subgroup, we define a Fourier like transform for locally compact abelian (LCA) topological groups. We studied two wavelet multipliers and Landau-Pollak-Slepian operators on locally compact abelian topological groups associated to the transform and show that the transforms are $L^p$bounded linear operators, and are in Schatten p-class for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. Finally, we determine their trace class and also obtain a connection with the generalized Landau-Pollak-Slepian operators.
The aim of this paper is to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the orthonormality of wavelet system arising out of left translations and nonisotropic dilations on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. A similar problem is also discussed for the twisted wavelet system on $\mathbb{C}$.
We study continuous wavelet transforms associated to matrix dilation groups giving rise to an irreducible square-integrable quasi-regular representation on ${\rm L}^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We first prove that these representations are integrable as well, with respect to a wide variety of weights, thus allowing to consistently quantify coefficient decay via coorbit space norms. We then show that these spaces always admit an atomic decomposition in terms of bandlimited Schwartz wavelets. We exhibit spaces of Schwartz functions densely contained in (most of) the coorbit spaces. We also present an examp…
For any symmetry group $H$ and any appropriate matrix dilation we give an explicit method for the construction of $H$-symmetric refinable interpolatory refinable masks which satisfy sum rule of arbitrary order $n$. For each such mask we give an explicit technique for the construction of dual wavelet frames such that the corresponding wavelet masks are mutually symmetric and have the vanishing moments up to the order n. For an abelian symmetry group $H$ we modify the technique such that each constructed wavelet mask is $H$-symmetric.
A variety of different orthogonal wavelet bases has been found in L_2(R) for the last three decades. It appeared that similar constructions also exist for functions defined on some other algebraic structures, such as the Cantor and Vilenkin groups and local fields of positive characteristic. In the present paper we show that the situation is quite different for the field of $p$-adic numbers. Namely, it is proved that any orthogonal wavelet basis consisting of band-limited (periodic) functions is a modification of Haar basis. This is a little bit unexpected because from the wavelet theory point…
This paper presents a full catalogue, up to conjugacy and subgroups of finite index, of all matrix groups $H < {\rm GL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ that give rise to a continuous wavelet transform with associated irreducible quasi-regular representation. For each group in this class, coorbit theory allows to consistently define spaces of sparse signals, and to construct atomic decompositions converging simultaneously in a whole range of these spaces. As an application of the classification, we investigate the existence of compactly supported admissible vectors and atoms for the groups.
The concept of super-wavelet was introduced by Balan, and Han and Larson over the field of real numbers which has many applications not only in engineering branches but also in different areas of mathematics. To develop this notion on local fields having positive characteristic we obtain characterizations of super-wavelets of finite length as well as Parseval frame multiwavelet sets of finite order in this setup. Using the group theoretical approach based on coset representatives, further we establish Shannon type multiwavelet in this perspective while providing examples of Parseval frame (mul…
We consider the coorbit theory associated to general continuous wavelet transforms arising from a square-integrable, irreducible quasi-regular representation of a semidirect product group $G = \mathbb{R}^d \rtimes H$. The existence of coorbit spaces for this very general setting has been recently established, together with concrete vanishing moment criteria for analyzing vectors and atoms that can be used in the coorbit scheme. These criteria depend on fairly technical assumptions on the dual action of the dilation group, and it is one of the chief purposes of this paper to considerably simpli…
In this article we show that there exist measurable sets W in the plane with finite measure that tile the plane in a measurable way under the action of a expansive matrix A, an affine Weyl group W, and a full rank lattice G. This note is follow-up research to the earlier article "Coxeter groups and wavelet sets" by the first and second authors, and is also relevant to the earlier article "Coxeter groups, wavelets, multiresolution and sampling" by M. Dobrescu and the third author. After writing these two articles, the three authors participated in a workshop at the Banff Center on "Operator met…
In this paper, we study wavelet filters and their dependence on two numbers, the scale N and the genus g. We show that the wavelet filters, in the quadrature mirror case, have a harmonic analysis which is based on representations of the C^*-algebra O_N. A main tool in our analysis is the infinite-dimensional group of all maps T -> U(N) (where U(N) is the group of all unitary N-by-N matrices), and we study the extension problem from low-pass filter to multiresolution filter using this group.
In this article, we present a constructive method for computing the frame coefficients of finite wavelet frames over prime fields using tools from computational harmonic analysis and group theory.
Let $a$, $b$ be two fixed non-zero constants. A measurable set $E\subset \mathbb{R}$ is called a Weyl-Heisenberg frame set for $(a, b)$ if the function $g=χ_{E}$ generates a Weyl-Heisenberg frame for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ under modulates by $b$ and translates by $a$, i.e., $\{e^{imbt}g(t-na\}_{m,n\in\mathbb{Z}}$ is a frame for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. It is an open question on how to characterize all frame sets for a given pair $(a,b)$ in general. In the case that $a=2π$ and $b=1$, a result due to Casazza and Kalton shows that the condition that the set $F=\bigcup_{j=1}^{k}([0,2π)+2n_{j}π)$ (where $\{n_…
Wavelet set wavelets were the first examples of wavelets that may not have associated multiresolution analyses. Furthermore, they provided examples of complete orthonormal wavelet systems in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which only require a single generating wavelet. Although work had been done to smooth these wavelets, which are by definition discontinuous on the frequency domain, nothing had been explicitly done over $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d >1$. This paper, along with another one cowritten by the author, finally addresses this issue. Smoothing does not work as expected in higher dimensions. For example, B…
We study the construction of Gabor frames and wavelet frames for Weyl-Heisenberg group and extended affine group by using contraction between the affine group and the Weyl-Heisenberg group due to Subag, Baruch, Birman and Mann. Firstly, we give construction of Gabor frames with several generators from a unitary irreducible representation associated to the Weyl-Heisenberg group. Wavelet frames with several generators associated with an extended affine group have been obtained. A relation between frames for Weyl-Heisenberg group and extended affine group is also discussed. Finally, we show that …
For a given symmetric refinable mask obeying the sum rule of order $n$, an explicit method is suggested for the construction of mutually symmetric almost frame-like wavelet system providing approximation order $n$. A transformation based on the lifting scheme is described that allows to improve almost frame-like wavelets to dual wavelet frames and preserve other properties. A direct method for the construction of dual wavelet frames providing approximation order $n$ and mutual symmetry properties is also discussed. For an abelian symmetry group $H$, a technique providing the $H$-symmetry prope…
In this article wavelets (admissible vectors) on the Heisenberg group are studied from the point of view of Calderon's formula. Further we shall show that for the class of Schwartz functions the Calderon admissibility condition is equivalent to the usual admissibility property which will be introduced in this work. Furthermore motivated by a well-known example on the real line, the Mexican-Hat wavelet, we demonstrate the existence and construction of an analogous wavelet on the Heisenberg Lie group with 2 vanishing moments, which together with all of its derivatives has Gaussian decay.
In this paper we show that the Fourier transform induces an isomorphism between the coorbit spaces defined by Feichtinger and Gröchenig of the mixed, weighted Lebesgue spaces $L_{v}^{p,q}$ with respect to the quasi-regular representation of a semi-direct product $\mathbb{R}^{d}\rtimes H$ with suitably chosen dilation group $H$, and certain decomposition spaces $\mathcal{D}\left(\mathcal{Q},L^{p},\ell_{u}^{q}\right)$ (essentially as introduced by Feichtinger and Gröbner), where the localized ,,parts`` of a function are measured in the $\mathcal{F}L^{p}$-norm. This equivalence is useful in sever…
We study the construction of nonuniform tight wavelet frames for the Lebesgue space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, where the related translation set is not necessary a group. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the unitary extension principle (UEP) and the oblique extension principle (OEP) for construction of multi-generated nonuniform tight wavelet frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Some examples are also given to illustrate the results.
Motivated by Bownik and Speegle's result on linear independence of wavelet Parseval frames, we consider affine systems (analogous to wavelet systems) defined on a second countable, locally compact abelian group $G$, where the translations are replaced by the action of a countable, discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $ G$ acting as a group of unitary operators on $L^2(G)$. The dilation operation in the wavelet setting is replaced by integer powers of a unitary operator $δ$ onto $L^2(G)$. We show that, under some compatibility conditions between $δ$ and the action of the group $Γ$, the linear independence …
We construct a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the torus $\mathbb T^2$ following a group-theoretical approach based on the conformal group $SO(2,2)$. The Euclidean limit reproduces wavelets on the plane $\mathbb R^2$ with two dilations, which can be defined through the natural tensor product representation of usual wavelets on $\mathbb R$. Restricting ourselves to a single dilation imposes severe conditions for the mother wavelet that can be overcome by adding extra modular group $SL(2,\mathbb Z)$ transformations, thus leading to the concept of \emph{modular wavelets}. We define modular-…
For an arbitrary matrix dilation, any integer n and any integer/semi-integer c, we describe all masks that are symmetric with respect to the point c and have sum rule of order n. For each such mask, we give explicit formulas for wavelet functions that are point symmetric/antisymmetric and generate frame-like wavelet system providing approximation order n. For any matrix dilations (which are appropriate for axial symmetry group on R^2 in some natural sense) and given integer n, axial symmetric/antisymmetric frame-like wavelet systems providing approximation order n are constructed. Also, for se…
In the framework of wave packet analysis, finite wavelet systems are particular classes of finite wave packet systems. In this paper, using a scaling matrix on a permuted version of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of system generator, we derive a locally-scaled version of the DFT of system genarator and obtain a finite equal-norm Parseval wavelet frame over prime fields. We also give a characterization of all multiplicative subgroups of the cyclic multiplicative group, for which the associated wavelet systems form frames. Finally, we present some concrete examples as applications of our r…
Let G be a stratified Lie group and L be the sub-Laplacian on G. Let 0 \neq f\in S(R^+). We show that Lf(L)δ, the distribution kernel of the operator Lf(L), is an admissible function on G. We also show that, if ξf(ξ) satisfies Daubechies' criterion, then L f(L)δgenerates a frame for any sufficiently fine lattice subgroup of G.
We establish wavelet characterizations of homogeneous Besov spaces on stratified Lie groups, both in terms of continuous and discrete wavelet systems. We first introduce a notion of homogeneous Besov space $\dot{B}_{p,q}^s$ in terms of a Littlewood-Paley-type decomposition, in analogy to the well-known characterization of the Euclidean case. Such decompositions can be defined via the spectral measure of a suitably chosen sub-Laplacian. We prove that the scale of Besov spaces is independent of the precise choice of Littlewood-Paley decomposition. In particular, different sub-Laplacians yield th…
We investigate the wavelet spaces $\mathcal{W}_{g}(\mathcal{H}_π)\subset L^{2}(G)$ arising from square integrable representations $π:G \to \mathcal{U}(\mathcal{H}_π)$ of a locally compact group $G$. We show that the wavelet spaces are rigid in the sense that non-trivial intersection between them imposes strong conditions. Moreover, we use this to derive consequences for wavelet transforms related to convexity and functions of positive type. Motivated by the reproducing kernel Hilbert space structure of wavelet spaces we examine an interpolation problem. In the setting of time-frequency analysi…
This paper is concerned with the study of Besov-type decomposition spaces, which are scales of spaces associated to suitably defined coverings of the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, or suitable open subsets thereof. A fundamental problem in this domain, that is currently not well understood, is deciding when two different coverings give rise to the same scale of decomposition spaces. In this paper, we establish a coarse geometric approach to this problem, and show how it specializes for the case of wavelet coorbit spaces associated to a particular class of matrix groups $H < GL(\mathbb{R}^d)$ …
Using the group theoretic approach based on the set of digits, we first investigate a finite collection of functions in $\ell^2 ({\mathbb{Z}}^2_N)$ that satisfies some localization properties in a region of the time-frequency plane. The digits are associated with an invertible (expansive/non-expansive) matrix having integer entries. Next, we study and characterize an orthonormal wavelet system for $\ell^2 ({\mathbb{Z}}^2_N)$. In addition, some results connecting the uncertainty principle with functions that generate the orthonormal wavelet system having time-frequency localization properties a…
We consider a class of $(N,M)$-elementary step functions on the $p$-adic Vilenkin group. We prove that $(N,M)$-elementary step function generates a MRA on $p$-adic Vilenkin group iff it is generated by a special $N$-valid rooted tree on the set of vertices $\{0,1,\dots p-1\}$ with the vector $(0,...,0)\in \mathbb Z^N$ as a root. Bibliography: 15 titles.
This paper provides maximal function characterizations of anisotropic Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated to general expansive matrices for the full range of parameters $p \in (0,\infty)$, $q \in (0,\infty]$ and $α\in \mathbb{R}$. The equivalent norm is defined in terms of the decay of wavelet coefficients, quantified by a Peetre-type space over a one-parameter dilation group. As an application, the existence of dual molecular frames and Riesz sequences is obtained; the wavelet systems are generated by translations and anisotropic dilations of a single function, where neither the translation no…
We provide explicit criteria for wavelets to give rise to frames and atomic decompositions in ${\rm L}^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, but also in more general Banach function spaces. We consider wavelet systems that arise by translating and dilating the mother wavelet, with the dilations taken from a suitable subgroup of ${\rm GL}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the so-called {\em dilation group}.The paper provides a unified approach that is applicable to a wide range of dilation groups, thus giving rise to new atomic decompositions for homogeneous Besov spaces in arbitrary dimensions, but also for other function spaces s…
We consider the problem of characterizing the wavefront set of a tempered distribution $u\in\mathcal{S}'(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ in terms of its continuous wavelet transform, where the latter is defined with respect to a suitably chosen dilation group $H\subset{\rm GL}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. In this paper we develop a comprehensive and unified approach that allows to establish characterizations of the wavefront set in terms of rapid coefficient decay, for a large variety of dilation groups. For this purpose, we introduce two technical conditions on the dual action of the group $H$, called microlocal admis…
