A wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a collection, or system, of unitary operators. We will describe the operator-interpolation approach to wavelet theory using the local commutant of a system. This is really an abstract application of the theory of operator algebras to wavelet theory. The concrete applications of this method include results obtained using specially constructed families of wavelet sets. A frame is a sequence of vectors in a Hilbert space which is a compression of a basis for a larger space. This is not the usual definition in the frame literature, but it is easily equivalent to the usual definition. Because of this compression relationship between frames and bases, the unitary system approach to wavelets (and more generally: wandering vectors) is perfectly adaptable to frame theory. The use of the local commutant is along the same lines as in the wavelet theory. Finally, we discuss constructions of frames with special properties using targeted decompositions of positive operators, and related problems.
We give a detailed description of the local commutant approach to wavelet theory using operator algebraic methods. We include a new result on interpolation pairs of wavelet sets: Every pair in the generalized Journe family of wavelet sets is an interpolation pair. In the last section, we give a discussion of several open problems on wavelets and frame-wavelets.
We study the construction of nonuniform tight wavelet frames for the Lebesgue space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, where the related translation set is not necessary a group. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the unitary extension principle (UEP) and the oblique extension principle (OEP) for construction of multi-generated nonuniform tight wavelet frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Some examples are also given to illustrate the results.
It is proven that if an interpolation map between two wavelet sets preserves the union of the sets, then the pair must be an interpolation pair. We also construct an example of a pair of wavelet sets for which the congruence domains of the associated interpolation map and its inverse are equal, and yet the pair is not an interpolation pair. The first result solves affirmatively a problem that the second author had posed several years ago, and the second result solves an intriguing problem of D. Han. The key to this counterexample is a special technical lemma on constructing wavelet sets. Sever…
We investigate the wavelet spaces $\mathcal{W}_{g}(\mathcal{H}_π)\subset L^{2}(G)$ arising from square integrable representations $π:G \to \mathcal{U}(\mathcal{H}_π)$ of a locally compact group $G$. We show that the wavelet spaces are rigid in the sense that non-trivial intersection between them imposes strong conditions. Moreover, we use this to derive consequences for wavelet transforms related to convexity and functions of positive type. Motivated by the reproducing kernel Hilbert space structure of wavelet spaces we examine an interpolation problem. In the setting of time-frequency analysi…
This paper examines the wavelet multiplicity function. An explicit formula for the multiplicity function is derived. An application to operator interpolation is then presented. We conclude with several remarks regarding the wavelet connectivity problem.
Restricted non-linear approximation is a type of N-term approximation where a measure $ν$ on the index set (rather than the counting measure) is used to control the number of terms in the approximation. We show that embeddings for restricted non-linear approximation spaces in terms of weighted Lorentz sequence spaces are equivalent to Jackson and Bernstein type inequalities, and also to the upper and lower Temlyakov property. As applications we obtain results for wavelet bases in Triebel-Lizorkin spaces by showing the Temlyakow property in this setting. Moreover, new interpolation results for …
In this paper, we study wavelet filters and their dependence on two numbers, the scale N and the genus g. We show that the wavelet filters, in the quadrature mirror case, have a harmonic analysis which is based on representations of the C^*-algebra O_N. A main tool in our analysis is the infinite-dimensional group of all maps T -> U(N) (where U(N) is the group of all unitary N-by-N matrices), and we study the extension problem from low-pass filter to multiresolution filter using this group.
We propose a simple method to construct step mask and corresponding step wavelet functions that generate tight wavelet frames on the field of p-adic numbers. To construct tight wavelet frames we do not use the principle of unitary extension, we use Pontryagin's principle of duality.
An indefinite variant of the abstract interpolation problem is considered. Associated to this problem is a model Pontryagin space isometric operator V. All the solutions of the problem are shown to be in a one-to-one correspondence with a subset of the set of all unitary extenions U of V. These unitary extension U of V are realized as unitary colligations with the indefinite de Branges-Rovnyak space as a state space.
We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets, due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun , by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.
We present a unitary approach to the construction of representations and intertwining operators. We apply it to the $C^*$-algebras, groups, Gabor type unitary systems and wavelets. We give an application of our method to the theory of frames, and we prove a general dilation theorem which is in turn applied to specific cases, and we obtain in this way a dilation theorem for wavelets.
We study a decomposition problem for a class of unitary representations associated with wavelet analysis, wavelet representations, but our framework is wider and has applications to multi-scale expansions arising in dynamical systems theory for non-invertible endomorphisms. Our main results offer a direct integral decomposition for the general wavelet representation, and we solve a question posed by Judith Packer. This entails a direct integral decomposition of the general wavelet representation. We further give a detailed analysis of the measures contributing to the decomposition into irreduc…
We prove an abstract interpolation theorem which interpolates the (r,2)-summing and (s,2)-mixing norm of a fixed operator in the image and the range space. Combined with interpolation formulas for spaces of operators we obtain as an application the original Bennett-Carl inequalities for identities acting between Minkowski spaces l_u as well as their analogues for Schatten classes S_u. Furthermore, our techniques motivate a study of Bennett-Carl inequalities within a more general setting of symmetric Banach sequence spaces and unitary ideals.
A traditional wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a system of unitary operators defined in terms of translation and dilation operations. A Coxeter/fractal-surface wavelet is obtained by defining fractal surfaces on foldable figures, which tesselate the embedding space by reflections in their bounding hyperplanes instead of by translations along a lattice. Although both theories look different at their onset, there exist connections and communalities which are exhibited in this semi-expository paper. In particular, there …
Motivated by Bownik and Speegle's result on linear independence of wavelet Parseval frames, we consider affine systems (analogous to wavelet systems) defined on a second countable, locally compact abelian group $G$, where the translations are replaced by the action of a countable, discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $ G$ acting as a group of unitary operators on $L^2(G)$. The dilation operation in the wavelet setting is replaced by integer powers of a unitary operator $δ$ onto $L^2(G)$. We show that, under some compatibility conditions between $δ$ and the action of the group $Γ$, the linear independence …
For points in $d$ real dimensions, we introduce a geometry for general digit sets. We introduce a positional number system where the basis for our representation is a fixed $d$ by $d$ matrix over $\bz$. Our starting point is a given pair $(A, \mathcal D)$ with the matrix $A$ assumed expansive, and $\mathcal D$ a chosen complete digit set, i.e., in bijective correspondence with the points in $\bz^d/A^T\bz^d$. We give an explicit geometric representation and encoding with infinite words in letters from $\mathcal D$. We show that the attractor $X(A^T,\mathcal D)$ for an affine Iterated Function S…

Spline wavelet tight frames of Ron-Shen have been used widely in frame based image analysis and restorations. However, except for the tight frame property and the approximation order of the truncated series, there are few other properties of this family of spline wavelet tight frames to be known. This paper is to present a few new properties of this family that will provide further understanding of it and, hopefully, give some indications why it is efficient in image analysis and restorations. In particular, we present a recurrence formula of computing generators of higher order spline wavelet…
Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affir…
We extend Robertson's theorem to apply to frames generated by the action of a discrete, countable abelian unitary group. Within this setup we use Stone's theorem and the theory of spectral multiplicity to analyze wandering frame collections. Motivated by wavelet theory, we explicitly apply our results to the action of the integers given by translations on $\ltwo$. This yields a new functional analytic method of constructing a wavelet from a multiresolution analysis.
Continuing our recent work we study polynomial masks of multivariate tight wavelet frames from two additional and complementary points of view: convexity and system theory. We consider such polynomial masks that are derived by means of the unitary extension principle from a single polynomial. We show that the set of such polynomials is convex and reveal its extremal points as polynomials that satisfy the quadrature mirror filter condition. Multiplicative structure of such polynomial sets allows us to improve the known upper bounds on the number of frame generators derived from box splines. In …
We study the construction of Gabor frames and wavelet frames for Weyl-Heisenberg group and extended affine group by using contraction between the affine group and the Weyl-Heisenberg group due to Subag, Baruch, Birman and Mann. Firstly, we give construction of Gabor frames with several generators from a unitary irreducible representation associated to the Weyl-Heisenberg group. Wavelet frames with several generators associated with an extended affine group have been obtained. A relation between frames for Weyl-Heisenberg group and extended affine group is also discussed. Finally, we show that …
The unitary extension principle (UEP) by Ron and Shen yields conditions for the construction of a multi-generated tight wavelet frame for $L^2(\mr^s)$ based on a given refinable function. In this paper we show that the UEP can be generalized to locally compact abelian groups. In the general setting, the resulting frames are generated by modulates of a collection of functions, via the Fourier transform this corresponds to a generalized shift-invariant system. Both the stationary and the nonstationary case are covered. We provide general constructions, based on B-splines on the group itself as w…
Although numerous studies have focused on normal Besov spaces, limited studies have been conducted on exponentially weighted Besov spaces. Therefore, we define exponentially weighted Besov space $VB_{p,q}^{δ,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ whose smoothness includes normal Besov spaces, Besov spaces with dominating mixed smoothness, and their interpolation. Furthermore, we obtain wavelet characterization of $VB_{p,q}^{δ,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Next, approximation formulas such as sparse grids are derived using the determined formula. The results of this study are expected to provide considerable insight into the …
In this work we introduce a class of discrete groups containing subgroups of abstract translations and dilations, respectively. A variety of wavelet systems can appear as $π(\G)ψ$, where $π$ is a unitary representation of a wavelet group and $\G$ is the abstract pseudo-lattice $\G$. We prove a condition in order that a Parseval frame $π(\G)ψ$ can be dilated to an orthonormal basis of the form $τ(\G)Ψ$ where $τ$ is a super-representation of $π$. For a subclass of groups that includes the case where the translation subgroup is Heisenberg, we show that this condition always holds, and we cite fam…
We give an operator theoretic approach to the constructions of multiresolutions as they are used in a number of basis constructions with wavelets, and in Hilbert spaces on fractals. Our approach starts with the following version of the classical Baumslag-Solitar relations $u t = t^2 u$ where $t$ is a unitary operator in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and $u$ is an isometry in $\mathcal H$. There are isometric dilations of this system into a bigger Hilbert space, relevant for wavelets. For a variety of carefully selected dilations, the ``bigger'' Hilbert space may be $L^2(\br)$, and the dilated o…
The question of existence is treated for near-minimizers for the distance functional (or $E$-functional in the interpolation terminology) that are stable under the action of certain operators. In particular, stable near-minimizers for the couple $(L^1, L^p)$ are shown to exist when the operator is the projection on wavelets and these wavelets possess only some weak conditions of decay at infinity.
We study traces of weighted Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $F^s_{p,q}({\mathbb R}^n,w)$ on hyperplanes ${\mathbb R}^{n-k}$, where the weight is of Muckenhoupt type. We concentrate on the example weight $w_α(x) = |x_n|^α$ when $|x_n|\leq 1$, $x\in{\mathbb R}^n$, and $w_α(x)=1$ otherwise, where $α>-1$. Here we use some refined atomic decomposition argument as well as an appropriate wavelet representation in corresponding (unweighted) Besov spaces. The second main outcome is the description of the real interpolation space $(B^{s_1}_{p_1,p_1}({\mathbb R}^{n-k}), B^{s_2}_{p_2,p_2}({\mathbb R}^{n-k}))_{θ,r…
The research monograph gives the first systematic exposition of the elliptic (scalar and matrix) operators theory and elliptic boundary-value problems in the scales of Hilbert spaces of Hörmander of the functions/distributions of arbitrary positive or negative smoothness. The book is based on the method of interpolation with a functional parameter for the abstract and Sobolev unitary spaces. Some results are also new for the Sobolev scales. The monograph is intended for the researches, professors and PhD students.
Adapting the recently developed randomized dyadic structures, we introduce the notion of spline function in geometrically doubling quasi-metric spaces. Such functions have interpolation and reproducing properties as the linear splines in Euclidean spaces. They also have Hölder regularity. This is used to build an orthonormal basis of Hölder-continuous wavelets with exponential decay in any space of homogeneous type. As in the classical theory, wavelet bases provide a universal Calderón reproducing formula to study and develop function space theory and singular integrals. We discuss the example…
We construct the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the homogeneous space (Cartan domain) D_4=SO(4,2)/(SO(4)\times SO(2)) of the conformal group SO(4,2) (locally isomorphic to SU(2,2)) in 1+3 dimensions. The manifold D_4 can be mapped one-to-one onto the future tube domain C^4_+ of the complex Minkowski space through a Cayley transformation, where other kind of (electromagnetic) wavelets have already been proposed in the literature. We study the unitary irreducible representations of the conformal group on the Hilbert spaces L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ) and L^2_h(C^4_+,d\tildeν_λ) of square integrable h…
We consider frames arising from the action of a unitary representation of a discrete countable abelian group. We show that the range of the analysis operator can be determined by computing which characters appear in the representation. This allows one to compare the ranges of two such frames, which is useful for determining similarity and also for multiplexing schemes. Our results then partially extend to Bessel sequences arising from the action of the group. We apply the results to sampling on bandlimited functions and to wavelet and Weyl-Heisenberg frames. This yields a sufficient condition …
In this paper we offer a computational approach to the spectral function for a finite family of commuting operators, and give applications. Motivated by questions in wavelets and in signal processing, we study a problem about spectral concentration of integral translations of functions in the Hilbert space $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. Our approach applies more generally to families of $n$ arbitrary commuting unitary operators in a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, or equivalent the spectral theory of a unitary representation $U$ of the rank-$n$ lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. Star…
There is a canonical unitary transformation from $L^2(\R)$ onto the Fock space $F^2$, called the Bargmann transform. We study the action of the Bargmann transform on several classical integral operators on $L^2(\R)$, including the fractional Fourier transform, the fractional Hilbert transform, and the wavelet transform.
Over the decades, Functional Analysis has been enriched and inspired on account of demands from neighboring fields, within mathematics, harmonic analysis (wavelets and signal processing), numerical analysis (finite element methods, discretization), PDEs (diffusion equations, scattering theory), representation theory; iterated function systems (fractals, Julia sets, chaotic dynamical systems), ergodic theory, operator algebras, and many more. And neighboring areas, probability/statistics (for example stochastic processes, Ito and Malliavin calculus), physics (representation of Lie groups, quant…
We study fractional variants of the quasi-norms introduced by Brezis, Van Schaftingen, and Yung in the study of the Sobolev space $\dot W^{1,p}$. The resulting spaces are identified as a special class of real interpolation spaces of Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces. We establish the equivalence between Fourier analytic definitions and definitions via difference operators acting on measurable functions. We prove various new results on embeddings and non-embeddings, and give applications to harmonic and caloric extensions. For suitable wavelet bases we obtain a characterization of the approximation …
In this paper we give a unitary approach for the simultaneous study of the convergence of discrete and integral operators described by means of a family of linear continuous functionals acting on functions defined on locally compact Hausdorff topological groups. The general family of operators introduced and studied includes very well-known operators in the literature. We give results of uniform convergence, and modular convergence in the general setting of Orlicz spaces. The latter result allow us to cover many other settings as the $L^p$-spaces, the interpolation spaces, the exponential space…
Using Gabor analysis, we give a complete characterization of all lattice sampling and interpolating sequences in the Fock space of polyanalytic functions, displaying a "Nyquist rate" which increases with $n$, the degree of polyanaliticity of the space. Such conditions are equivalent to sharp lattice density conditions for certain vector-valued Gabor systems, namely superframes and Gabor super-Riesz sequences with Hermite windows, and in the case of superframes they were studied recently by Gröchenig and Lyubarskii. The proofs of our main results use variations of the Janssen-Ron-Shen duality p…
We explore new connections between the fields and local observables in two dimensional chiral conformal field theory. We show that in a broad class of examples, the von Neumann algebras of local observables (a conformal net) can be obtained from the fields (a unitary vertex operator algebra) via a continuous geometric interpolation procedure involving Graeme Segal's functorial definition of conformal field theory. In particular, we construct conformal nets from these unitary vertex operator algebras by showing that 'geometrically mollified' versions of the fields yield bounded, local operators…
