In this paper, we study wavelet filters and their dependence on two numbers, the scale N and the genus g. We show that the wavelet filters, in the quadrature mirror case, have a harmonic analysis which is based on representations of the C^*-algebra O_N. A main tool in our analysis is the infinite-dimensional group of all maps T -> U(N) (where U(N) is the group of all unitary N-by-N matrices), and we study the extension problem from low-pass filter to multiresolution filter using this group.
We give a detailed description of the local commutant approach to wavelet theory using operator algebraic methods. We include a new result on interpolation pairs of wavelet sets: Every pair in the generalized Journe family of wavelet sets is an interpolation pair. In the last section, we give a discussion of several open problems on wavelets and frame-wavelets.
We study the construction of nonuniform tight wavelet frames for the Lebesgue space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, where the related translation set is not necessary a group. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the unitary extension principle (UEP) and the oblique extension principle (OEP) for construction of multi-generated nonuniform tight wavelet frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Some examples are also given to illustrate the results.
A wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a collection, or system, of unitary operators. We will describe the operator-interpolation approach to wavelet theory using the local commutant of a system. This is really an abstract application of the theory of operator algebras to wavelet theory. The concrete applications of this method include results obtained using specially constructed families of wavelet sets. A frame is a sequence of vectors in a Hilbert space which is a compression of a basis for a larger space. This is not …
In this paper it is shown, that B-splines are scaling functions for any natural N. For any natural N construction of Haar wavelets, Kotelnikov-Shannon wavelets, nonorthogonal wavelets based on B-splines is given. Examples of construction of filters of N-channel decomposition of signal and filters of reconstruction based on B-splines are given
We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets, due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun , by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.
We present a new proof of a theorem of Mallat which describes a construction of wavelets starting from a quadrature mirror filter. Our main innovation is to show how the scaling function associated to the filter can be used to identify a certain direct limit of Hilbert spaces with $L^2(\R)$ in such a way that one can immediately identify the wavelet basis. Our arguments also use a pair of isometries introduced by Bratteli and Jorgensen, and exploit the geometry inherent in the Cuntz relations satisfied by these isometries.
We present a unitary approach to the construction of representations and intertwining operators. We apply it to the $C^*$-algebras, groups, Gabor type unitary systems and wavelets. We give an application of our method to the theory of frames, and we prove a general dilation theorem which is in turn applied to specific cases, and we obtain in this way a dilation theorem for wavelets.
In this paper we are discussing various aspects of wavelet filters. While there are earlier studies of these filters as matrix valued functions in wavelets, in signal processing, and in systems, we here expand the framework. Motivated by applications, and by bringing to bear tools from reproducing kernel theory, we point out the role of non-positive definite Hermitian inner products (negative squares), for example Krein spaces, in the study of stability questions. We focus on the non-rational case, and establish new connections with the theory of generalized Schur functions and their associate…
We study a decomposition problem for a class of unitary representations associated with wavelet analysis, wavelet representations, but our framework is wider and has applications to multi-scale expansions arising in dynamical systems theory for non-invertible endomorphisms. Our main results offer a direct integral decomposition for the general wavelet representation, and we solve a question posed by Judith Packer. This entails a direct integral decomposition of the general wavelet representation. We further give a detailed analysis of the measures contributing to the decomposition into irreduc…
Let $\mathscr Q$ be the quaternion Heisenberg group, and let $\mathbf P$ be the affine automorphism group of $\mathscr Q$. We develop the theory of continuous wavelet transform on the quaternion Heisenberg group via the unitary representations of $\mathbf P$ on $L^2(\mathscr Q)$. A class of radial wavelets is constructed. The inverse wavelet transform is simplified by using radial wavelets. Then we investigate the Radon transform on $\mathscr Q$. A Semyanistri-Lizorkin space is introduced, on which the Radon transform is a bijection. We deal with the Radon transform on $\mathscr Q$ both by the…
We discuss how one can use certain filters from signal processing to describe isomorphisms between certain projective $C(\mathbb T^n)$-modules. Conversely, we show how cancellation properties for finitely generated projective modules over $C(\mathbb T^n)$ can often be used to prove the existence of continuous high pass filters, of the kind needed for multivariate wavelets, corresponding to a given continuous low-pass filter. However, we also give an example of a continuous low-pass filter for which it is impossible to find corresponding continuous high-pass filters. In this way we give another…
A traditional wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a system of unitary operators defined in terms of translation and dilation operations. A Coxeter/fractal-surface wavelet is obtained by defining fractal surfaces on foldable figures, which tesselate the embedding space by reflections in their bounding hyperplanes instead of by translations along a lattice. Although both theories look different at their onset, there exist connections and communalities which are exhibited in this semi-expository paper. In particular, there …
We study the harmonic analysis of the quadrature mirror filters coming from multiresolution wavelet analysis of compactly supported wavelets. It is known that those of these wavelets that come from third order polynomials are parametrized by the circle, and we compute that the corresponding filters generate irreducible mutually disjoint representations of of the Cuntz algebra $ O_{2} $ except at two points on the circle. One of the two exceptional points corresponds to the Haar wavelet and the other is the unique point on the circle where the father function defines a tight frame which is not …
The measure on generalized solenoids constructed using filters by Dutkay and Jorgensen is analyzed further by writing the solenoid as the product of a torus and a Cantor set. Using this decomposition, key differences are revealed between solenoid measures associated with classical filters in $\mathbb R^d$ and those associated with filters on inflated fractal sets. In particular, it is shown that the classical case produces atomic fiber measures, and as a result supports both suitably defined solenoid MSF wavelets and systems of imprimitivity for the corresponding wavelet representation of the …
It is shown that any convolution operator in the time domain can be represented exactly as a multiplication operator in the time-scale (wavelet) domain. The Mellin transform gives a one-to-one correspondence between frequency filters (multiplications in the frequency domain) and scale filters (multiplications in the scale domain), subject to the convergence of the defining integrals. The usual wavelet reconstruction theorem is a special case. Applications to the denoising of random signals are proposed. It is argued that the present method is more suitable for removing the effects of atmospher…
Motivated by Bownik and Speegle's result on linear independence of wavelet Parseval frames, we consider affine systems (analogous to wavelet systems) defined on a second countable, locally compact abelian group $G$, where the translations are replaced by the action of a countable, discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $ G$ acting as a group of unitary operators on $L^2(G)$. The dilation operation in the wavelet setting is replaced by integer powers of a unitary operator $δ$ onto $L^2(G)$. We show that, under some compatibility conditions between $δ$ and the action of the group $Γ$, the linear independence …
For points in $d$ real dimensions, we introduce a geometry for general digit sets. We introduce a positional number system where the basis for our representation is a fixed $d$ by $d$ matrix over $\bz$. Our starting point is a given pair $(A, \mathcal D)$ with the matrix $A$ assumed expansive, and $\mathcal D$ a chosen complete digit set, i.e., in bijective correspondence with the points in $\bz^d/A^T\bz^d$. We give an explicit geometric representation and encoding with infinite words in letters from $\mathcal D$. We show that the attractor $X(A^T,\mathcal D)$ for an affine Iterated Function S…

Spline wavelet tight frames of Ron-Shen have been used widely in frame based image analysis and restorations. However, except for the tight frame property and the approximation order of the truncated series, there are few other properties of this family of spline wavelet tight frames to be known. This paper is to present a few new properties of this family that will provide further understanding of it and, hopefully, give some indications why it is efficient in image analysis and restorations. In particular, we present a recurrence formula of computing generators of higher order spline wavelet…
Orthogonal wavelets, or wavelet frames, for L^2(R) are associated with quadrature mirror filters (QMF). The latter constitute a set of complex numbers which relate the dyadic scaling of functions on R to the Z-translates, and which satisfy the QMF-axioms. In this paper, we show that generically, the data in the QMF-systems of wavelets is minimal, in the sense that it cannot be nontrivially reduced. The minimality property is given a geometric formulation in the Hilbert space l^2(Z), and it is then shown that minimality corresponds to irreducibility of a wavelet representation of the algebra O_…
We demonstrate that the Plancherel transform for Type-I groups provides one with a natural, unified perspective for the generalized continuous wavelet transform, on the one hand, and for a class of Wigner functions, on the other. The wavelet transform of a signal is an $L^2$-function on an appropriately chosen group, while the Wigner function is defined on a coadjoint orbit of the group and serves as an alternative characterization of the signal, which is often used in practical applications. The Plancherel transform maps $L^2$-functions on a group unitarily to fields of Hilbert-Schmidt operat…
We consider a class of convergence questions for infinite products that arise in wavelet theory when the wavelet filters are more singular than is traditionally built into the assumptions. We establish pointwise convergence properties for the absolute square of the scaling functions. Our proofs are based on probabilistic tools.
We consider the problem of designing spectral graph filters for the construction of dictionaries of atoms that can be used to efficiently represent signals residing on weighted graphs. While the filters used in previous spectral graph wavelet constructions are only adapted to the length of the spectrum, the filters proposed in this paper are adapted to the distribution of graph Laplacian eigenvalues, and therefore lead to atoms with better discriminatory power. Our approach is to first characterize a family of systems of uniformly translated kernels in the graph spectral domain that give rise …
We present a general setting where wavelet filters and multiresolution decompositions can be defined, beyond the classical $\mathbf L^2(\mathbb R,dx)$ setting. This is done in a framework of {\em iterated function system} (IFS) measures; these include all cases studied so far, and in particular the Julia set/measure cases. Every IFS has a fixed order, say $N$, and we show that the wavelet filters are indexed by the infinite dimensional group $G$ of functions from $X$ into the unitary group $U_N$. We call $G$ the loop group because of the special case of the unit circle.
In this work we introduce a class of discrete groups containing subgroups of abstract translations and dilations, respectively. A variety of wavelet systems can appear as $π(\G)ψ$, where $π$ is a unitary representation of a wavelet group and $\G$ is the abstract pseudo-lattice $\G$. We prove a condition in order that a Parseval frame $π(\G)ψ$ can be dilated to an orthonormal basis of the form $τ(\G)Ψ$ where $τ$ is a super-representation of $π$. For a subclass of groups that includes the case where the translation subgroup is Heisenberg, we show that this condition always holds, and we cite fam…
We give an operator theoretic approach to the constructions of multiresolutions as they are used in a number of basis constructions with wavelets, and in Hilbert spaces on fractals. Our approach starts with the following version of the classical Baumslag-Solitar relations $u t = t^2 u$ where $t$ is a unitary operator in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and $u$ is an isometry in $\mathcal H$. There are isometric dilations of this system into a bigger Hilbert space, relevant for wavelets. For a variety of carefully selected dilations, the ``bigger'' Hilbert space may be $L^2(\br)$, and the dilated o…
We construct the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the homogeneous space (Cartan domain) D_4=SO(4,2)/(SO(4)\times SO(2)) of the conformal group SO(4,2) (locally isomorphic to SU(2,2)) in 1+3 dimensions. The manifold D_4 can be mapped one-to-one onto the future tube domain C^4_+ of the complex Minkowski space through a Cayley transformation, where other kind of (electromagnetic) wavelets have already been proposed in the literature. We study the unitary irreducible representations of the conformal group on the Hilbert spaces L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ) and L^2_h(C^4_+,d\tildeν_λ) of square integrable h…
