We study the harmonic analysis of the quadrature mirror filters coming from multiresolution wavelet analysis of compactly supported wavelets. It is known that those of these wavelets that come from third order polynomials are parametrized by the circle, and we compute that the corresponding filters generate irreducible mutually disjoint representations of of the Cuntz algebra $ O_{2} $ except at two points on the circle. One of the two exceptional points corresponds to the Haar wavelet and the other is the unique point on the circle where the father function defines a tight frame which is not an orthonormal basis. At these two points the representation decomposes into two and three mutually disjoint irreducible representations, respectively, and the two representations at the Haar point are each unitarily equivalent to one of the three representations at the other singular point.
We consider representations of Cuntz--Krieger algebras on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on the limit set, identified with a Cantor set in the unit interval. We use these representations and the associated Perron-Frobenius and Ruelle operators to construct families of wavelets on these Cantor sets.
Radially symmetric wavelets possessing multiresolution framework are found to be useful in different fields like Pattern recognition, Computed Tomography (CT) etc. The compactly supported wavelets are known to be useful for localized operations in applications such as reconstruction, enhancement etc. In this work we introduce a novel way of designing compactly supported radial wavelets in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ from a 1D Daubechies wavelets and obtain a reconstruction formula possessing multiresolution framework. Further, we demonstrate the usefulness of our radial wavelets in Tomography.
We show that compactly supported wavelets in L^2(R) of scale N may be effectively parameterized with a finite set of spin vectors in C^N, and conversely that every set of spin vectors corresponds to a wavelet. The characterization is given in terms of irreducible representations of orthogonality relations defined from multiresolution wavelet filters.
A theorem of Glimm states that representation theory of an NGCR C*-algebra is always intractable, and the Cuntz algebra O_N is a case in point. The equivalence classes of irreducible representations under unitary equivalence cannot be captured with a Borel cross section. Nonetheless, we prove here that wavelet representations correspond to equivalence classes of irreducible representations of O_N, and they are effectively labeled by elements of the loop group, i.e., the group of measurable functions A:T-->U_N(C). These representations of O_N are constructed here from an orbit picture analysis …
This paper examines linear independence of shearlet systems. This property has already been studied for wavelets and other systems such as, for instance, for Gabor systems. In fact, for Gabor systems this problem is commonly known as the HRT conjecture. In this paper we present a proof of linear independence of compactly supported separable shearlet systems. For this, we employ a sampling strategy to utilize the structure of an implicitly given underlying oversampled wavelet system as well as the shape of the supports of the shearlet elements.
We study strong compactly aligned product systems of $\mathbb{Z}_+^N$ over a C*-algebra $A$. We provide a description of their Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra in terms of tractable relations coming from ideals of $A$. This approach encompasses product systems where the left action is given by compacts, as well as a wide class of higher rank graphs (beyond row-finite). Moreover we analyze higher rank factorial languages and their C*-algebras. Many of the rank one results in the literature find here their higher rank analogues. In particular, we show that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of a higher ra…
To a representation of $Ø_N$ (the Cuntz algebra with $N$ generators) we associate a projection valued measure and we study the case when this measure has atoms. The main technical tool are the spaces invariant for all the operators $S_i^*$. We classify the purely atomic representations and find when such representations are permutative. Applications include: wavelet representations, representations generated by finitely correlated states, representation associated to Hadamard triples (or fractal spectral measures) and representations associated to generalized Walsh bases.
In this paper we analyze two-dimensional wavelet reconstructions from Fourier samples within the framework of generalized sampling. For this, we consider both separable compactly-supported wavelets and boundary wavelets. We prove that the number of samples that must be acquired to ensure a stable and accurate reconstruction scales linearly with the number of reconstructing wavelet functions. We also provide numerical experiments that corroborate our theoretical results.
In this paper we study the general reconstruction of a compactly supported function from its Fourier coefficients using compactly supported shearlet systems. We assume that only finitely many Fourier samples of the function are accessible and based on this finite collection of measurements an approximation is sought in a finite dimensional shearlet reconstruction space. We analyse this sampling and reconstruction process by a recently introduced method called generalized sampling. In particular by studying the stable sampling rate of generalized sampling we then show stable recovery of the sig…
We analyze the structure of co-invariant subspaces for representations of the Cuntz algebras O_N for N = 2,3,..., N < infinity, with special attention to the representations which are associated to orthonormal and tight-frame wavelets in L^2(R) corresponding to scale number N.
We present a new proof of a theorem of Mallat which describes a construction of wavelets starting from a quadrature mirror filter. Our main innovation is to show how the scaling function associated to the filter can be used to identify a certain direct limit of Hilbert spaces with $L^2(\R)$ in such a way that one can immediately identify the wavelet basis. Our arguments also use a pair of isometries introduced by Bratteli and Jorgensen, and exploit the geometry inherent in the Cuntz relations satisfied by these isometries.
In this paper we are discussing various aspects of wavelet filters. While there are earlier studies of these filters as matrix valued functions in wavelets, in signal processing, and in systems, we here expand the framework. Motivated by applications, and by bringing to bear tools from reproducing kernel theory, we point out the role of non-positive definite Hermitian inner products (negative squares), for example Krein spaces, in the study of stability questions. We focus on the non-rational case, and establish new connections with the theory of generalized Schur functions and their associate…
Shearlet tight frames have been extensively studied during the last years due to their optimal approximation properties of cartoon-like images and their unified treatment of the continuum and digital setting. However, these studies only concerned shearlet tight frames generated by a band-limited shearlet, whereas for practical purposes compact support in spatial domain is crucial. In this paper, we focus on cone-adapted shearlet systems which -- accounting for stability questions -- are associated with a general irregular set of parameters. We first derive sufficient conditions for such cone-a…
The problem of factorization and parametrization of compactly supported biorthogonal wavelets was reduced to that of pseudoidentity matrix pairs by Resnikoff, Tian, and Wells in their 2001 paper. Based on a conjecture on the pseudoidentity matrix pairs of rank 2 stated in the same paper, they proved a theorem which gives a complete factorization result for rank 2 compactly supported biorthogonal wavelets. In this paper, we first provide examples to show that the conjecture is not true, then we prove a factorization theorem for pseudoidentity matrix pairs of rank $m\ge 2$. As a consequence, our…
We construct representations of a q-oscillator algebra by operators on Fock space on positive matrices. They emerge from a multiresolution scaling construction used in wavelet analysis. The representations of the Cuntz Algebra arising from this multiresolution analysis are contained as a special case in the Fock Space construction.
Shearlet theory has become a central tool in analyzing and representing 2D data with anisotropic features. Shearlet systems are systems of functions generated by one single generator with parabolic scaling, shearing, and translation operators applied to it, in much the same way wavelet systems are dyadic scalings and translations of a single function, but including a precise control of directionality. Of the many directional representation systems proposed in the last decade, shearlets are among the most versatile and successful systems. The reason for this being an extensive list of desirable…
Generalizing wavelets by adding desired redundancy and flexibility, framelets are of interest and importance in many applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Several key properties of framelets are high vanishing moments for sparse multiscale representation, fast framelet transforms for numerical efficiency, and redundancy for robustness. However, it is a challenging problem to study and construct multivariate nonseparable framelets, mainly due to their intrinsic connections to factorization and syzygy modules of multivariate polynomial matrices. In this paper, we circumv…
Framelets (a.k.a. wavelet frames) are of interest in both theory and applications. Quite often, tight or dual framelets with high vanishing moments are constructed through the popular oblique extension principle (OEP). Though OEP can increase vanishing moments for improved sparsity, it has a serious shortcoming for scalar framelets: the associated discrete framelet transform is often not compact and deconvolution is unavoidable. Here we say that a framelet transform is compact if it can be implemented by convolution using only finitely supported filters. On the other hand, in sharp contrast to…
