Shearlet tight frames have been extensively studied during the last years due to their optimal approximation properties of cartoon-like images and their unified treatment of the continuum and digital setting. However, these studies only concerned shearlet tight frames generated by a band-limited shearlet, whereas for practical purposes compact support in spatial domain is crucial. In this paper, we focus on cone-adapted shearlet systems which -- accounting for stability questions -- are associated with a general irregular set of parameters. We first derive sufficient conditions for such cone-adapted irregular shearlet systems to form a frame and provide explicit estimates for their frame bounds. Secondly, exploring these results and using specifically designed wavelet scaling functions and filters, we construct a family of cone-adapted shearlet frames consisting of compactly supported shearlets. For this family, we derive estimates for the ratio of their frame bounds and prove that they provide optimally sparse approximations of cartoon-like images.
This paper examines linear independence of shearlet systems. This property has already been studied for wavelets and other systems such as, for instance, for Gabor systems. In fact, for Gabor systems this problem is commonly known as the HRT conjecture. In this paper we present a proof of linear independence of compactly supported separable shearlet systems. For this, we employ a sampling strategy to utilize the structure of an implicitly given underlying oversampled wavelet system as well as the shape of the supports of the shearlet elements.
We analyze the detection and classification of singularities of functions $f = χ_B$, where $B \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and $d = 2,3$. It will be shown how the set $\partial B$ can be extracted by a continuous shearlet transform associated with compactly supported shearlets. Furthermore, if $\partial S$ is a $d-1$ dimensional piecewise smooth manifold with $d=2$ or $3$, we will classify smooth and non-smooth components of $\partial S$. This improves previous results given for shearlet systems with a certain band-limited generator, since the estimates we derive are uniform. Moreover, we will show t…
In this paper we study the general reconstruction of a compactly supported function from its Fourier coefficients using compactly supported shearlet systems. We assume that only finitely many Fourier samples of the function are accessible and based on this finite collection of measurements an approximation is sought in a finite dimensional shearlet reconstruction space. We analyse this sampling and reconstruction process by a recently introduced method called generalized sampling. In particular by studying the stable sampling rate of generalized sampling we then show stable recovery of the sig…
Shearlet theory has become a central tool in analyzing and representing 2D data with anisotropic features. Shearlet systems are systems of functions generated by one single generator with parabolic scaling, shearing, and translation operators applied to it, in much the same way wavelet systems are dyadic scalings and translations of a single function, but including a precise control of directionality. Of the many directional representation systems proposed in the last decade, shearlets are among the most versatile and successful systems. The reason for this being an extensive list of desirable…
Cartoon-like images, i.e., C^2 functions which are smooth apart from a C^2 discontinuity curve, have by now become a standard model for measuring sparse (non-linear) approximation properties of directional representation systems. It was already shown that curvelets, contourlets, as well as shearlets do exhibit (almost) optimally sparse approximation within this model. However, all those results are only applicable to band-limited generators, whereas, in particular, spatially compactly supported generators are of uttermost importance for applications. In this paper, we now present the first com…
Compactly supported shearlets have been studied in both theory and applications. In this paper, we construct symmetric compactly supported shearlet systems based on pseudo splines of type II. Specially, using B-splines, we construct shearlet frame having explicit analytical forms which is important for applications. The shearlet systems based on B-splines also provide optimally sparse approximation within cartoon-liked image.
Shearlet systems have been introduced as directional representation systems, which provide optimally sparse approximations of a certain model class of functions governed by anisotropic features while allowing faithful numerical realizations by a unified treatment of the continuum and digital realm. They are redundant systems, and their frame properties have been extensively studied. In contrast to certain band-limited shearlets, compactly supported shearlets provide high spatial localization, but do not constitute Parseval frames. Thus reconstruction of a signal from shearlet coefficients requ…
Based on the shearlet transform we present a general construction of continuous tight frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ from any sufficiently smooth function with anisotropic moments. This includes for example compactly supported systems, piecewise polynomial systems, or both. From our earlier results it follows that these systems enjoy the same desirable approximation properties for directional data as the previous bandlimited and very specific constructions due to Kutyniok and Labate. We also show that the representation formulas we derive are in a sense optimal for the shearlet transform.
Anisotropic decompositions using representation systems based on parabolic scaling such as curvelets or shearlets have recently attracted significantly increased attention due to the fact that they were shown to provide optimally sparse approximations of functions exhibiting singularities on lower dimensional embedded manifolds. The literature now contains various direct proofs of this fact and of related sparse approximation results. However, it seems quite cumbersome to prove such a canon of results for each system separately, while many of the systems exhibit certain similarities. In this p…
The main purpose of the paper is to give a characterization of all compactly supported dual windows of a Gabor frame. As an application, we consider an iterative procedure for approximation of the canonical dual window via compactly supported dual windows on every step. In particular, the procedure allows to have approximation of the canonical dual window via dual windows from certain modulation spaces or from the Schwartz space.
Radially symmetric wavelets possessing multiresolution framework are found to be useful in different fields like Pattern recognition, Computed Tomography (CT) etc. The compactly supported wavelets are known to be useful for localized operations in applications such as reconstruction, enhancement etc. In this work we introduce a novel way of designing compactly supported radial wavelets in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ from a 1D Daubechies wavelets and obtain a reconstruction formula possessing multiresolution framework. Further, we demonstrate the usefulness of our radial wavelets in Tomography.
The equivalence of the characteristic function approach and the probabilistic approach to monotone and boolean convolutions is proven for non-compactly supported probability measures. A probabilistically motivated definition of the multiplicative boolean convolution of probability measures on the positive half-line is proposed. Unlike Bercovici's multiplicative boolean convolution it is always defined, but it turns out to be neither commutative nor associative. Finally some relations between free, monotone, and boolean convolutions are discussed.
The $α$-modulation transform is a time-frequency transform generated by square-integrable representations of the affine Weyl-Heisenberg group modulo suitable subgroups. In this paper we prove new conditions that guarantee the admissibility of a given window function. We also show that the generalized coorbit theory can be applied to this setting, assuming specific regularity of the windows. This then yields canonical constructions of Banach frames and atomic decompositions in $α$-modulation spaces. In particular, we prove the existence of compactly supported (in time domain) vectors that are a…
We identify a class of continuous compactly supported functions for which the known part of the Gabor frame set can be extended. At least for functions with support on an interval of length two, the curve determining the set touches the known obstructions. Easy verifiable sufficient conditions for a function to belong to the class are derived, and it is shown that the B-splines $B_N, N\ge 2,$ as well as certain "continuous and truncated" versions of several classical functions (e.g., the Gaussian and the two-sided exponential function) belong to the class. The sufficient conditions for the fra…
Let L=-Δ+V be a Schrödinger operator on R^d, d\geq 3. We assume that V is a nonnegative, compactly supported potential that belongs to L^p(R^d), for some p>d/2. Let K_t be the semigroup generated by -L. We say that an L^1(R^d)-function f belongs to the Hardy space H_L^1 associated with L if sup_{t>0} |K_t f| belongs to L^1(R^d). We prove that f\in H_L^1 if and only if R_j f \in L^1(R^d) for j=1,...,d, where R_j= \frac{d}{dx_j} L^{-1/2} are the Riesz transforms associated with L.
Comparing with univariate framelets, the main challenge involved in studying multivariate framelets is that we have to deal with the highly non-trivial problem of factorizing multivariate polynomial matrices. As a consequence, multivariate framelets are much less studied than univariate framelets in the literature. Among existing works on multivariate framelets, multivariate multiframelets are much less considered comparing with the exitensively studied scalar framelets. Hence multiframelets are far from being well understood. In this paper, we focus on multivariate dual multiframelets (or dua…
In applications that involve interactive curve and surface modeling, the intuitive manipulation of shapes is crucial. For instance, user interaction is facilitated if a geometrical object can be manipulated through control points that interpolate the shape itself. Additionally, models for shape representation often need to provide local shape control and they need to be able to reproduce common shape primitives such as ellipsoids, spheres, cylinders, or tori. We present a general framework to construct families of compactly-supported interpolators that are piecewise-exponential polynomial. The…
We study the harmonic analysis of the quadrature mirror filters coming from multiresolution wavelet analysis of compactly supported wavelets. It is known that those of these wavelets that come from third order polynomials are parametrized by the circle, and we compute that the corresponding filters generate irreducible mutually disjoint representations of of the Cuntz algebra $ O_{2} $ except at two points on the circle. One of the two exceptional points corresponds to the Haar wavelet and the other is the unique point on the circle where the father function defines a tight frame which is not …
The geometry of fundamental domains of lattices was used by Han and Wang to construct multivariate Gabor frames for separable lattices. We build upon their results to obtain Gabor frames with smooth and compactly supported window functions. For this purpose we study pairs of lattices which have equal density and allow for a common compact and star-shaped fundamental domain. The results are then extended to a larger class of lattices via symplectic equivalence.
Theorems about characterization of finite rank Toeplitz operators in Fock-Segal-Bargmann spaces, known previously only for symbols with compact support, are carried over to symbols without that restriction, however with a rather rapid decay at infinity. The proof is based upon a new version of the Stone-Weierstrass approximation theorem.
We strengthen, in two different ways, the so called Borell-Brascamp- Lieb inequality in the class of power concave functions with compact support. As examples of applications we obtain two quantitative versions of the Brunn- Minkowski inequality and of the Urysohn inequality for torsional rigidity.
The aim of this paper is to establish various functional inequalities for the convolution of a compactly supported measure and a standard Gaussian distribution on Rd. We especially focus on getting good dependence of the constants on the dimension. We prove that the Poincar{é} inequality holds with a dimension-free bound. For the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, we improve the best known results (Zimmermann, JFA 2013) by getting a bound that grows linearly with the dimension. We also establish transport-entropy inequalities for various transport costs.
If G is a Lie group, let D(G) be the space of compactly supported smooth functions on G. Consider the bilinear map B : D(G) x D(G) -> D(G), (f,g) |-> f*g which takes a pair of test functions to their convolution. We show that B is continuous if and only if G is sigma-compact. More generally, let r,s,t be non-negative integers (or infinity) with t <= r+s. Let E_1, E_2 be locally convex spaces and b : E_1 x E_2 -> F be a continuous bilinear map to a complete locally convex space F. The main result is a characterization of those (G,r,s,t,b) for which the convolution map C^r_c(G,E_1) x C^s_c(G,E_2…
We consider convolution equations of the type f * T = g where f, g are in L^p(R^n) and T is a compactly supported distribution. Under natural assumptions on the zero set of the Fourier transform of T we show that f is compactly supported, provided g is. Similar results are proved for non compact symmetric spaces as well.
We show that the convolution of a compactly supported measure on $\mathbb{R}$ with a Gaussian measure satisfies a logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI). We use this result to give a new proof of a classical result in random matrix theory that states that, under certain hypotheses, the empirical law of eigenvalues of a sequence of random real symmetric matrices converges weakly in probability to its mean. We then examine the optimal constants in the LSIs for the convolved measures in terms of the variance of the convolving Gaussian. We conclude with partial results on the extension of our main t…
$\newcommand{mc}[1]{\mathcal{#1}}$ $\newcommand{D}{\mc{D}(\mc{Q},L^p,\ell_w^q)}$ We present a framework for the construction of structured, possibly compactly supported Banach frames and atomic decompositions for decomposition spaces. Such a space $\D$ is defined using a frequency covering $\mc{Q}=(Q_i)_{i\in I}$: If $(φ_i)_{i}$ is a suitable partition of unity subordinate to $\mc{Q}$, then $\Vert g\Vert_{\D}:=\left\Vert\left(\Vert\mc{F}^{-1}(φ_i\hat{g})\Vert_{L^p}\right)_{i}\right\Vert_{\ell_w^q}$. We assume $\mc{Q}=(T_iQ+b_i)_{i}$, with $T_i\in{\rm GL}(\Bbb{R}^d),b_i\in\Bbb{R}^d$. Given a pr…
We show that compactly supported wavelets in L^2(R) of scale N may be effectively parameterized with a finite set of spin vectors in C^N, and conversely that every set of spin vectors corresponds to a wavelet. The characterization is given in terms of irreducible representations of orthogonality relations defined from multiresolution wavelet filters.
A basilar property and a useful tool in the theory of Sobolev spaces is the density of smooth compactly supported functions in the space $W^{k,p}(\R^n)$ (i.e. the functions with weak derivatives of orders $0$ to $k$ in $L^p$). On Riemannian manifolds, it is well known that the same property remains valid under suitable geometric assumptions. However, on a complete non-compact manifold it can fail to be true in general, as we prove in this paper. This settles an open problem raised for instance by E. Hebey [\textit{Nonlinear analysis on manifolds: Sobolev spaces and inequalities}, Courant Lectu…
We give sufficient conditions for some underdetermined elliptic PDE of any order to construct smooth compactly supported solutions. In particular we show that two smooth elements in the kernel of certain underdetermined linear elliptic operators $P$ can be glued in a chosen region in order to obtain a new smooth solution. This new solution is exactly equal to the starting elements outside the gluing region. This result completely contrasts with the usual unique continuation for determined or overdetermined elliptic operators. As a corollary we obtain compactly supported solutions in the kernel…
Framelets (a.k.a. wavelet frames) are of interest in both theory and applications. Quite often, tight or dual framelets with high vanishing moments are constructed through the popular oblique extension principle (OEP). Though OEP can increase vanishing moments for improved sparsity, it has a serious shortcoming for scalar framelets: the associated discrete framelet transform is often not compact and deconvolution is unavoidable. Here we say that a framelet transform is compact if it can be implemented by convolution using only finitely supported filters. On the other hand, in sharp contrast to…
We study the problem of approximating compactly-supported integrable functions while implementing their support set using feedforward neural networks. Our first main result transcribes this "structured" approximation problem into a universality problem. We do this by constructing a refinement of the usual topology on the space $L^1_{\operatorname{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{R}^D)$ of locally-integrable functions in which compactly-supported functions can only be approximated in $L^1$-norm by functions with matching discretized support. We establish the universality of ReLU feedforward networks …
Generalizing wavelets by adding desired redundancy and flexibility, framelets are of interest and importance in many applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Several key properties of framelets are high vanishing moments for sparse multiscale representation, fast framelet transforms for numerical efficiency, and redundancy for robustness. However, it is a challenging problem to study and construct multivariate nonseparable framelets, mainly due to their intrinsic connections to factorization and syzygy modules of multivariate polynomial matrices. In this paper, we circumv…
Let $C$ denote a closed convex cone $C$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with apex at 0. We denote by $\mathcal{E}'(C)$ the set of distributions having compact support which is contained in $C$. Then $\mathcal{E}'(C)$ is a ring with the usual addition and with convolution. We give a necessary and sufficient analytic condition on $\hat{f}_1,..., \hat{f}_n$ for $f_1,...,f_n \in \mathcal{E}'(C)$ to generate the ring $\mathcal{E}'(C)$. (Here $\hat{\cdot}$ denotes Fourier-Laplace transformation.) This result is an application of a general result on rings of analytic functions of several variables by Hörmander. En…
We study the asymptotic behavior as L \to \infty of the finite-volume spectral shift function for a positive, compactly-supported perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in d-dimensional Euclidean space, restricted to a cube of side length L with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The size of the support of the perturbation is fixed and independent of L. We prove that the Cesàro mean of finite-volume spectral shift functions remains pointwise bounded along certain sequences L_n \to \infty for Lebesgue-almost every energy. In deriving this result, we give a short proof of the vague convergence of th…
