This paper concerns rigidity of the mapping class groups. We show that any homomorphism $ϕ:{\rm Mod}_g\to {\rm Mod}_h$ between mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces with distinct genera $g>h$ is trivial if $g\geq 3$ and has finite image for all $g\geq 1$. Some implications are drawn for more general homomorphs of these groups.
We extend certain homomorphisms defined on the higher Torelli subgroups of the mapping class group to crossed homomorphisms defined on the entire mapping class group. In particular, for every $k\geq 2$, we construct a crossed homomorphism $ε_k$ which extends Morita's homomorphism $\tilde τ_k$ to the entire mapping class group. From this crossed homomorphism we also obtain a crossed homomorphism extending the $k$th Johnson homomorphism $τ_k$ to the mapping class group. D. Johnson and S. Morita obtained their respective homomorphisms by considering the action of the mapping class group on the ni…
We refine the construction of quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups. It is useful to know that there are unbounded quasi-homomorphisms which are bounded when restricted to particular subgroups since then one deduces that the mapping class group is not boundedly generated by these subgroups. In this note we enlarge the class of such subgroups. The generalization is motivated by considerations in first order theory of free groups.
We show that mapping class groups of surfaces of genus at least two contain elements of infinite order that are not conjugate to their inverses, but whose powers have bounded torsion lengths. In particular every homogeneous quasi-homomorphism vanishes on such an element, showing that elements of infinite order not conjugate to their inverses cannot be separated by quasi-homomorphisms.
We prove that either the images of the mapping class groups by quantum representations are not isomorphic to higher rank lattices or else the kernels have a large number of normal generators. Further we show that the images of the mapping class groups have nontrivial 2-cohomology, at least for small levels. For this purpose we considered a series of quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups extending previous work of Barge and Ghys and of Gambaudo and Ghys. These quasi-homomorphisms are pull-backs of the Dupont-Guichardet-Wigner quasi-homomorphisms on pseudo-unitary groups along quantum repr…
We give elementary applications of quasi-homomorphisms to growth problems in groups. A particular case concerns the number of torsion elements required to factorise a given element in the mapping class group of a surface.
This is an addendum to arXiv: 0810.5376. We show, using our methods and an auxiliary result of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara, that a finitely generated group with infinitely many pairwise non-conjugate homomorphisms to a mapping class group virtually acts non-trivially on an $\R$-tree, and, if it is finitely presented, it virtually acts non-trivially on a simplicial tree
The main goal of this paper is a detailed study of asymptotic cones of the mapping class groups. In particular, we prove that every asymptotic cone of a mapping class group has a bi-Lipschitz equivariant embedding into a product of real trees, sending limits of hierarchy paths onto geodesics, and with image a median subspace. One of the applications is that a group with Kazhdan's property (T) can have only finitely many pairwise non-conjugate homomorphisms into a mapping class group. We also give a new proof of the rank conjecture of Brock and Farb (previously proved by Behrstock and Minsky, a…
Let $N$ be a compact, connected, non-orientable surface of genus $ρ$ with $n$ boundary components, with $ρ\ge 5$ and $n \ge 0$, and let $\mathcal{M} (N)$ be the mapping class group of $N$. We show that, if $\mathcal{G}$ is a finite index subgroup of $\mathcal{M} (N)$ and $φ: \mathcal{G} \to \mathcal{M} (N)$ is an injective homomorphism, then there exists $f_0 \in \mathcal{M} (N)$ such that $φ(g) = f_0 g f_0^{-1}$ for all $g \in \mathcal{G}$. We deduce that the abstract commensurator of $\mathcal{M} (N)$ coincides with $\mathcal{M} (N)$.
We construct infinitely many linearly independent quasi-homomorphisms on the mapping class group of a Riemann surface with genus at least two which vanish on a handlebody subgroup. As a corollary, we disprove a conjecture of Reznikov on bounded width in Heegaard splittings. Another corollary is that there are infinitely many linearly independent quasi-invariants on the Heegaard splittings of three-manifolds.
Every homomorphism from finite index subgroups of a universal lattices to mapping class groups of orientable surfaces (possibly with punctures), or to outer automorphism groups of finitely generated nonabelian free groups must have finite image. Here the universal lattice denotes the special linear group G=SL_m(Z[x1,...,xk]) with m at least 3 and k finite. Moreover, the same results hold ture if universal lattices are replaced with symplectic universal lattices Sp_{2m}(Z[x1,...,xk]) with m at least 2. These results can be regarded as a non-arithmetization of the theorems of Farb--Kaimanovich--…
We classify homomorphisms from mapping class groups by using finite subgroups. First, we give a new proof of a result of Aramayona--Souto that homomorphisms between mapping class groups of closed surfaces are trivial for a range of genera. Second, we show that only finitely many mapping class groups of closed surfaces have non-trivial homomorphisms into $\text{Homeo}(\mathbb{S}^n)$ for any $n$. We also prove that every homomorphism from $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ to $\text{Homeo}(\mathbb{S}^2)$ or $\text{Homeo}(\mathbb{S}^3)$ is trivial if $g\ge 3$, extending a result of Franks--Handel.
Recently, John Franks and Michael Handel proved that, for $g\geq 3$ and $n\leq 2g-4$, every homomorphism from the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus $g$ to $\GL (n,\C)$ is trivial. We extend this result to $n\leq 2g-1$, also covering the case $g=2$. As an application, we prove the corresponding result for nonorientable surfaces. Another application is on the triviality of homomorphisms from the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $g$ to $\Aut (F_n)$ or to $\Out (F_n)$ for $n\leq 2g-1$.
The Torelli group, I(S_g), is the subgroup of the mapping class group consisting of elements that act trivially on the homology of the surface. There are three types of elements that naturally arise in studying I(S_g): bounding pair maps, separating twists, and simply intersecting pair maps (SIP-maps). Historically the first two types of elements have been the focus of the literature on I(S_g), while SIP-maps have received relatively little attention until recently, due to an infinite presentation of I(S_g) introduced by Andrew Putman that uses all three types of elements. We will give a topol…
Let $S$ be a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus at least 3, $\mathcal{C}(S)$ be the complex of curves on $S$ and $Mod_S^*$ be the extended mapping class group of $S$. We prove that a simplicial map, $λ: \mathcal{C}(S) \to \mathcal{C}(S)$, preserves nondisjointness (i.e. if $α$ and $β$ are two vertices in $\mathcal{C}(S)$ and $i(α, β) \neq 0$, then $i(λ(α), λ(β)) \neq 0$) iff it is induced by a homeomorphism of $S$. As a corollary, we prove that if $K$ is a finite index subgroup of $Mod_S^*$ and $f: K \to Mod_S^*$ is an injective homomorphism, then $f$ is induced by a homeomorphism …
Suppose that $X$ and $Y$ are surfaces of finite topological type, where $X$ has genus $g\geq 6$ and $Y$ has genus at most $2g-1$; in addition, suppose that $Y$ is not closed if it has genus $2g-1$. Our main result asserts that every non-trivial homomorphism $\Map(X) \to \Map(Y)$ is induced by an {\em embedding}, i.e. a combination of forgetting punctures, deleting boundary components and subsurface embeddings. In particular, if $X$ has no boundary then every non-trivial endomorphism $\Map(X)\to\Map(X)$ is in fact an isomorphism. As an application of our main theorem we obtain that, under the s…
We extend each higher Johnson homomorphism to a crossed homomorphism from the automorphism group of a finite-rank free group to a finite-rank abelian group. We also extend each Morita homomorphism to a crossed homomorphism from the mapping class group of once-bounded surface to a finite-rank abelian group. This improves on the author's previous results [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 7 (2007):1297-1326]. To prove the first result, we express the higher Johnson homomorphisms as coboundary maps in group cohomology. Our methods involve the topology of nilpotent homogeneous spaces and lattices in nilpotent …
Let R be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus g with p boundary components. Let C(R) be the complex of curves on R and Mod_R^* be the extended mapping class group of R. Suppose that either g = 2 and p > 1 or g > 2 and p >= 0. We prove that a simplicial map lambda from C(R) to C(R) is superinjective if and only if it is induced by a homeomorphism of R. As a corollary, we prove that if K is a finite index subgroup of Mod_R^* and f is an injective homomorphism from K to Mod_R^*, then f is induced by a homeomorphism of R and f has a unique extension to an automorphism of Mod_R^*. This…
The Johnson filtration of the mapping class group of a compact, oriented surface is the descending series consisting of the kernels of the actions on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of the surface. Each term of the Johnson filtration admits a Johnson homomorphism, whose kernel is the next term in the filtration. In this paper, we consider a general situation where a group acts on a group with a filtration called an "extended N-series". We develop a theory of Johnson homomorphisms in this general setting, including many known variants of the original Johnson homomorphisms as we…
Johnson has defined a surjective homomorphism from the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group of the surface of genus $g$ with one boundary component to $\wedge^3 H$, the third exterior product of the homology of the surface. Morita then extended Johnson's homomorphism to a homomorphism from the entire mapping class group to ${1/2} \wedge^3 H \semi \sp(H)$. This Johnson-Morita homomorphism is not surjective, but its image is finite index in ${1/2} \wedge^3 H \semi \sp(H)$. Here we give a description of the exact image of Morita's homomorphism. Further, we compute the image of the handlebo…
We give a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Dennis Johnson that asserts that the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism on the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group is generated by separating twists. In fact, we prove a more general result that also applies to "subsurface Torelli groups". Using this, we extend Johnson's calculation of the rational abelianization of the Torelli group not only to the subsurface Torelli groups, but also to finite-index subgroups of the Torelli group that contain the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism.
We define new bordism and spin bordism invariants of certain subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface. In particular, they are invariants of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group. The second and third terms of this filtration are the well-known Torelli group and Johnson subgroup, respectively. We introduce a new representation in terms of spin bordism, and we prove that this single representation contains all of the information given by the Johnson homomorphism, the Birman-Craggs homomorphism, and the Morita homomorphism.
In this paper, we determine the abelianization of the level d mapping class group for d=2 and odd d. We also extend the homomorphism of the Torelli group defined by Heap to a homomorphism of the level 2 mapping class group.
We first develop a general theory of Johnson filtrations and Johnson homomorphisms for a group $G$ acting on another group $K$ equipped with a filtration indexed by a "good" ordered commutative monoid. Then, specializing it to the case where the monoid is the additive monoid $\mathbb{N}^2$ of pairs on nonnegative integers, we obtain a theory of double Johnson filtrations and homomorphisms. We apply this theory to the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}$ of a surface $Σ_{g,1}$ with one boundary component, equipped with the normal subgroups $\bar{X}$, $\bar{Y}$ of $π_1(Σ_{g,1})$ associated to a sta…
We show that central extensions of the mapping class group $M_g$ of the closed orientable surface of genus $g$ by $\Z$ are residually finite. Further we give rough estimates of the largest $N=N_g$ such that homomorphisms from $M_g$ to SU(N) have finite image. In particular, homomorphisms of $M_g$ into $SL([\sqrt{g+1}],\C)$ have finite image. Both results come from properties of quantum representations of mapping class groups.
We consider two mod-p central series of the free group given by Stallings and Zassenhaus. Applying these series to definitions of Dennis Johnson's filtration of the mapping class group we obtain two mod-p Johnson filtrations. Further, we adapt the definition of the Johnson homomorphisms to obtain mod-p Johnson homomorphisms. We calculate the image of the first of these homomorphisms. We give generators for the kernels of these homomorphisms as well. We restrict the range of our mod-p Johnson homomorphisms using work of Morita. We finally prove the announced result of Perron that a rational hom…
We prove that the first integral cohomology of pure mapping class groups of infinite type genus one surfaces is trivial. For genus zero surfaces we prove that not every homomorphism to $\mathbb{Z}$ factors through a sphere with finitely many punctures. In fact we get an uncountable family of such maps.
In this paper we consider the action of the mapping class group of a surface on the space of homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a surface into PSL(2,R). Goldman conjectured that when the surface is closed and of genus bigger than one, the action on non-Teichmuller connected components of the associated moduli space (i.e. the space of homomorphisms modulo conjugation) is ergodic. One approach to this question is to use sewing techniques which requires that one considers the action on the level of homomorphisms, and for surfaces with boundary. In this paper we consider the case of the o…
We construct a crossed homomorphism by using a group action on the circle and the Poincaré translation number. We relate it to the Euler class of the action in terms of the Hochschild--Serre spectral sequence. As an application, we answer a question of Calegari and Chen, which is on an explicit form of a certain crossed homomorphism on the mapping class group of the sphere minus a Cantor set.
Let M denote the mapping class group of S, a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component. The action of M on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of S allows to define the so-called Johnson filtration and the Johnson homomorphisms. J. Levine introduced a new filtration of M, called the Lagrangian filtration. He also introduced a version of the Johnson homomorphisms for this new filtration. The first term of the Lagrangian filtration is the Lagrangian mapping class group, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by S, and which contains the Torelli group. Th…
We study injective homomorphisms between big mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces. First, we construct (uncountably many) examples of surfaces without boundary whose (pure) mapping class groups are not co-Hopfian; these are the first examples of injective endomorphisms of mapping class groups (of surfaces with empty boundary) that fail to be surjective. We then prove that, subject to some topological conditions on the domain surface, any continuous injective homomorphism between (arbitrary) big mapping class groups that sends Dehn twists to Dehn twists is induced by homeomorphism. Fi…
In this paper, we classify homomorphisms from the braid group of $n$ strands to the mapping class group of a genus $g$ surface. In particular, we show that when $g<n-2$, all representations are either cyclic or standard. Our result is sharp in the sense that when $g=n-2$, a generalization of the hyperelliptic representation appears, which is not cyclic or standard. This gives a classification of surface bundles over the configuration space of the complex plane. As a corollary, we partially recover the result of Aramayona-Souto, which classifies homomorphisms between mapping class groups, with …
Let $Σ$ be a surface with either boundary or marked points, equipped with an arbitrary framing. In this note we determine the action of the associated "framed mapping class group" on the homology of $Σ$ relative to its boundary (respectively marked points), describing the image as the kernel of a certain crossed homomorphism related to classical spin structures. Applying recent work of the authors, we use this to describe the monodromy action of the orbifold fundamental group of a stratum of abelian differentials on the relative periods.
The Johnson kernel is the subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface generated by Dehn twists along bounding simple closed curves, and has the second Johnson homomorphism as a free abelian quotient. In terms of the representation theory of the symplectic group, we give a complete description of cup products of two classes in the first rational cohomology of the Johnson kernel obtained by the rational dual of the second Johnson homomorphism.
Any nontrivial homomorphism from the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus $g\geq 3$ to $\GL(2g,\C)$ is conjugate to the standard symplectic representation. It is also shown that the mapping class group has no faithful linear representation in dimensions less than or equal to $3g-3$.
In these lecture notes, we combine recent homological methods of Kevin Whyte with older dynamical methods developed by Benson Farb and myself, to obtain a new quasi-isometric rigidity theorem for the mapping class group MCG(S) of a once punctured surface S of genus at least 2: if K is a finitely generated group quasi-isometric to MCG(S) then there is a homomorphism K -> MCG(S) with finite kernel and finite index image. This theorem is joint with Kevin Whyte.
We show that the smallest non-cyclic quotients of braid groups are symmetric groups, proving a conjecture of Margalit. Moreover we recover results of Artin and Lin about the classification of homomorphisms from braid groups on n strands to symmetric groups on k letters, where k is at most n. Unlike the original proofs, our method does not use the Bertrand-Chebyshev theorem, answering a question of Artin. Similarly for mapping class group of closed orientable surfaces, the smallest non-cyclic quotient is given by the mod two reduction of the symplectic representation. We provide an elementary p…
Infinite presentations are given for all of the higher Torelli groups of once-punctured surfaces. In the case of the classical Torelli group, a finite presentation of the corresponding groupoid is also given, and finite presentations of the classical Torelli groups acting trivially on homology modulo N are derived for all N. Furthermore, the first Johnson homomorphism, which is defined from the classical Torelli group to the third exterior power of the homology of the surface, is shown to lift to an explicit canonical 1-cocycle of the Teichmueller space. The main tool for these results is the …
Suppose that $f$ is a homomorphism from the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}(N_{g,n})$ of a nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ boundary components, to $\mathrm{GL}(m,\mathbb{C})$. We prove that if $g\ge 5$, $n\le 1$ and $m\le g-2$, then $f$ factors through the abelianization of $\mathcal{M}(N_{g,n})$, which is $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $g\in\{5,6\}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $g\ge 7$. If $g\ge 7$, $n=0$ and $m=g-1$, then either $f$ has finite image (of order at most two if $g\ne 8$), or it is conjugate to one of four "homological representations". As an application we prove th…
Let $Σ$ be a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component and let $\mathcal{M}$ denote the mapping class group of $Σ$. By considering the action of $\mathcal{M}$ on the fundamental group of $Σ$ it is possible to define different filtrations of $\mathcal{M}$ together with some homomorphisms on each term of the filtration. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly we study a filtration of $\mathcal{M}$ introduced recently by Habiro and Massuyeau, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by $Σ$. We shall call it the "alternative Johnson filtration", and the corresponding h…
We introduce an operation that measures the self intersections of paths on a surface. As applications, we give a criterion of the realizability of a generalized Dehn twist, and derive a geometric constraint on the image of the Johnson homomorphism.
The homology cobordism group of homology cylinders is a generalization of both the mapping class group of surfaces and the string link concordance group. We consider extensions of Johnson homomorphisms of a mapping class group, Milnor invariants and Orr invariants of links to homology cylinders, all of which are related to free nilpotent groups. We establish a combined filtration via kernels of extended Johnson homomorphisms and extended Milnor invariants. We determine its image under the three invariants, and investigate relations among the invariants, and relations of the filtration to autom…
We provide some language for algebraic study of the mapping class groups for surfaces with non-connected boundary. As applications, we generalize our previous results on Dehn twists to any compact connected oriented surfaces with non-empty boundary. Moreover we embed the `smallest' Torelli group in the sense of Putman into a pro-nilpotent group coming from the Goldman Lie algebra. The graded quotients of the embedding equal the Johnson homomorphisms of all degrees if the boundary is connected.
Dehn twists around simple closed curves in oriented surfaces satisfy the braid relations. This gives rise to a group theoretic from the braid group to the mapping class group. We prove here that this map is trivial in stable homology with any trivial coefficients. In particular this proves an old conjecture of J. Harer. The main tool is categorical delooping. In an appendix we discuss geometrically defined homomorphisms from the braid to the mapping class group.
In the present paper, we study the Sp-module structure of the cokernel of the Johnson homomorphism of the mapping class groups of surfaces. We detect the Sp-irreducible components with highest weight [1^k] (and [k]) in the cokernel. We also show that the multiplicities of them is equal to one.
These are the lecture notes for my course at the 2011 Park City Mathematics Graduate Summer School. The first two lectures covered the basics of the Torelli group and the Johnson homomorphism, and the third and fourth lectures discussed the second cohomology group of the level p congruence subgroup of the mapping class group, following my papers "The second rational homology group of the moduli space of curves with level structures" and "The Picard group of the moduli space of curves with level structures".
We construct a filtered mapping cone formula that computes the knot Floer complex of the $(n,1)$--cable of the knot meridian in any rational surgery, generalizing Truong's result about the $(n,1)$--cable of the knot meridian in large surgery and Hedden-Levine's filtered mapping cone formula. As an application, we show that there exist knots in integer homology spheres with arbitrary $φ_{i,j}$ values for any $i>j\geq 0$, where $φ_{i,j}$ are the concordance homomorphisms defined by Dai-Hom-Stoffregen-Truong.
We show the problem of counting homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a homology $3$-sphere $M$ to a finite, non-abelian simple group $G$ is #P-complete, in the case that $G$ is fixed and $M$ is the computational input. Similarly, deciding if there is a non-trivial homomorphism is NP-complete. In both reductions, we can guarantee that every non-trivial homomorphism is a surjection. As a corollary, for any fixed integer $m \ge 5$, it is NP-complete to decide whether $M$ admits a connected $m$-sheeted covering. Our construction is inspired by universality results in topological quantum com…
Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.
Let $M$ be a closed connected smooth manifold and $G=\textmd{Diff}_0(M)$ denote the connected component of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ containing the identity. The natural action of $G$ on $M$ induces the trace homomorphism on homology. We show that the image of trace homomorphism is annihilated by the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of $M$, generated by the characteristic classes of $M$. Analogously, if $J$ is an almost complex structure on $M$ and $G$ denotes the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ preserving $J$ then the image of the corresponding trace homomorph…
