Let $M$ be a closed connected smooth manifold and $G=\textmd{Diff}_0(M)$ denote the connected component of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ containing the identity. The natural action of $G$ on $M$ induces the trace homomorphism on homology. We show that the image of trace homomorphism is annihilated by the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of $M$, generated by the characteristic classes of $M$. Analogously, if $J$ is an almost complex structure on $M$ and $G$ denotes the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ preserving $J$ then the image of the corresponding trace homomorphism is annihilated by subalgebra generated by the Chern classes of $(M,J)$.
Let G a be subgroup of SL(2,C), the group of 2x2 matrices of determinant 1 with complex entries. Let h map onto h(G) be a homomorphism. We call h a trace preserving homomorphism if tr(h(g))=tr(g) for all g in G,where tr(g) is the trace of g. We solve the question of when a trace invariant homomorphism is a conjugation by some A in SL(2,R). Moreover, if the group G is finitely presented, this paper determines which traces of the generators and products of the generators determine the group up to conjugation. Incomplete solutions are known from the study of Fuchsian groups. Our theorems in this …
A knot in a solid torus defines a map on the set of (smooth or topological) concordance classes of knots in $S^3$. This set admits a group structure, but a conjecture of Hedden suggests that satellite maps never induce interesting homomorphisms: we give new evidence for this conjecture in both categories. First, we use Casson-Gordon signatures to give the first obstruction to a slice pattern inducing a homomorphism on the topological concordance group, constructing examples with every winding number besides $\pm 1$. We then provide subtle examples of satellite maps which map arbitrarily deep i…
Kawauchi defined a group structure on the set of homology $S^1$$\times$$S^2$'s under an equivalence relation called $\widetilde{H}$-cobordism. This group receives a homomorphism from the knot concordance group, given by the operation of zero-surgery. It is natural to ask whether the zero-surgery homomorphism is injective. We show that this question has a negative answer in the smooth category. Indeed, using knot concordance invariants derived from knot Floer homology we show that the kernel of the zero-surgery homomorphism contains a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-subgroup.
Given a smooth spacelike surface $Σ$ of negative curvature in Anti-de Sitter space of dimension 3, invariant by a representation $ρ:π_1(S)\to\mathrm{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}\times\mathrm{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}$ where $S$ is a closed oriented surface of genus $\geq 2$, a canonical construction associates to $Σ$ a diffeomorphism $ϕ_Σ$ of $S$. It turns out that $ϕ_Σ$ is a symplectomorphism for the area forms of the two hyperbolic metrics $h$ and $h'$ on $S$ induced by the action of $ρ$ on $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{H}^2$. Using an algebraic construction related to the flux homomorphism, we give a new proof of …
We study the stated skein modules of marked 3-manifolds. We generalize the splitting homomorphism for stated skein algebras of surfaces to a splitting homomorphism for stated skein modules of 3-manifolds. We show that there exists a Chebyshev-Frobenius homomorphism for the stated skein modules of 3-manifolds which extends the Chebyshev homomorphism of the skein algebras of unmarked surfaces originally constructed by Bonahon and Wong. Additionally, we show that the Chebyshev-Frobenius map commutes with the splitting homomorphism. This is then used to show that in the case of the stated skein al…
Morita introduced in 2008 a 1-cocycle on the group of homology cobordisms of surfaces with values in an infinite-dimensional vector space. His 1-cocycle contains all the "traces" of Johnson homomorphisms which he introduced fifteen years earlier in his study of the mapping class group. In this paper, we propose a new version of Morita's 1-cocycle based on a simple and explicit construction. Our 1-cocycle is proved to satisfy several fundamental properties, including a connection with the Magnus representation and the LMO homomorphism. As an application, we show that the rational abelianization…
We define a new smooth concordance homomorphism based on the knot Floer complex and an associated concordance invariant, epsilon. As an application, we show that an infinite family of topologically slice knots are independent in the smooth concordance group.
We define trace-like operators on a subspace of the space of derivations of the free Lie algebra generated by the first homology group $H$ of a surface $Σ$. This definition depends on the choice of a Lagrangian of $H$, and we call these operators the \emph{Lagrangian traces}. We suppose that $Σ$ is the boundary of a handlebody with first homology group $H'$, and we show that the Lagrangian traces corresponding to the Lagrangian $\operatorname{Ker} (H \rightarrow H')$ vanish on the image by the Johnson homomorphisms of the elements of the Johnson filtration that extend to the handlebody.
For all n > 0 there is a homomorphism from the smooth concordance group of knots in dimension 2n + 1 to an algebraically defined group called the rational algebraic concordance group. This algebraic concordance group splits as a direct sum of groups indexed by polynomials. For n > 1 the homomorphism is injective. This leads to what is called a primary decomposition theorem for knot concordance. In the classical dimension, the kernel of this homomorphism includes the smooth concordance group of topologically slice knots, and Jae Choon Cha has begun studying possible primary decompositions of th…
We consider two different quantizations of the character variety consisting of all representations of surface groups in SL_2. One is the skein algebra considered by Przytycki-Sikora and Turaev. The other is the quantum Teichmuller space introduced by Chekhov-Fock and Kashaev. We construct a homomorphism from the skein algebra to the quantum Teichmuller space which, when restricted the classical case, corresponds to the equivalence between these two algebras through trace functions.
Upsilon is a homomorphism on the smooth concordance group of knots defined by Ozsváth, Stipsicz and Szabó. In this paper, we define a generalization of upsilon for a family of embedded graphs in rational homolog spheres. We show that our invariant will induce a homomorphism on the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders, and present some applications. To define this invariant, we use tangle Floer homology. We lift relative gradings on tangle Floer homology to absolute gradings (for certain tangles) and prove a concatenation formula for it.
We apply mapping class group techniques and trisections to study intersection forms of smooth 4-manifolds. Johnson defined a well-known homomorphism from the Torelli group of a compact surface. Morita later showed that every homology 3-sphere can be obtained from the standard Heegaard decomposition of $S^3$ by regluing according to a map in the kernel of this homomorphism. We prove an analogous result for trisections of 4-manifolds. Specifically, if $X$ and $Y$ admit handle decompositions without 1- or 3-handles and have isomorphic intersection forms, then a trisection of $Y$ can be obtained f…
We study two homomorphisms to the rational homology sphere group. If $ψ$ denotes the inclusion homomorphism from the integral homology sphere group, then using work of Lisca we show that the image of $ψ$ intersects trivially with the subgroup of the rational homology sphere group generated by lens spaces. As corollaries this gives a new proof that the cokernel of $ψ$ is infinitely generated, and implies that a connected sum $K$ of 2-bridge knots is concordant to a knot with determinant 1 if and only if $K$ is smoothly slice. Furthermore, if $β$ denotes the homomorphism from the knot concordanc…
We study the set $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ of framed smoothly slice links which lie on the boundary of the complement of a 1-handlebody in a closed, simply connected, smooth 4-manifold $M$. We show that $\widehat{\mathcal S}_M$ is well-defined and describe how it relates to exotic phenomena in dimension four. In particular, in the case when $X$ is smooth, with a handle decompositions with no 1-handles and homeomorphic to but not smoothly embeddable in $D^4$, our results tell us that $X$ is exotic if and only if there is a link $L\hookrightarrow S^3$ which is smoothly slice in $X$, but not in $D…
Let $f:M\to \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse function on a smooth closed surface, $V$ be a connected component of some critical level of $f$, and $\mathcal{E}_V$ be its atom. Let also $\mathcal{S}(f)$ be a stabilizer of the function $f$ under the right action of the group of diffeomorphisms $\mathrm{Diff}(M)$ on the space of smooth functions on $M,$ and $\mathcal{S}_V(f) = \{h\in\mathcal{S}(f)\,| h(V) = V\}.$ The group $\mathcal{S}_V(f)$ acts on the set $π_0\partial \mathcal{E}_V$ of connected components of the boundary of $\mathcal{E}_V.$ Therefore we have a homomorphism $ϕ:\mathcal{S}(f)\to \mathrm{Au…
We demonstrate new applications of the trace embedding lemma to the study of piecewise-linear surfaces and the detection of exotic phenomena in dimension four. We provide infinitely many pairs of homeomorphic 4-manifolds $W$ and $W'$ homotopy equivalent to $S^2$ which have smooth structures distinguished by several formal properties: $W'$ is diffeomorphic to a knot trace but $W$ is not, $W'$ contains $S^2$ as a smooth spine but $W$ does not even contain $S^2$ as a piecewise-linear spine, $W'$ is geometrically simply connected but $W$ is not, and $W'$ does not admit a Stein structure but $W$ do…
Let $M$ be the circle or a compact interval, and let $α=k+τ\ge1$ be a real number such that $k=\lfloor α\rfloor$. We write $\mathrm{Diff}_+^α(M)$ for the group of $C^k$ diffeomorphisms of $M$ whose $k^{th}$ derivatives are Hölder continuous with exponent $τ$. If $α\ge1$, we prove that there exists a finitely generated subgroup $G_α\le\mathrm{Diff}_+^α(M)$ with the property that $G_α$ admits no injective homomorphisms into $\mathrm{Diff}_+^β(M)$ for all $β>α$. If $α>1$, we also show the dual result: there exists a finitely generated group $H_α\le\bigcap_{β<α}\mathrm{Diff}_+^β(M)$ with the prope…
A trisection of a smooth, closed, oriented 4-manifold is a decomposition into three 4-dimensional 1-handlebodies meeting pairwise in 3-dimensional 1-handlebodies, with triple intersection a closed surface. The fundamental groups of the surface, the 3-dimensional handlebodies, the 4-dimensional handlebodies, and the closed 4-manifold, with homomorphisms between them induced by inclusion, form a commutative diagram of epimorphisms, which we call a trisection of the 4-manifold group. A trisected 4-manifold thus gives a trisected group; here we show that every trisected group uniquely determines a…
