This paper is concerned with the solvability of some abstract differential equation of type $$\dot u(t) + Au(t) + Bu(t) \ni f(t), t \in (0,T], u(0) = 0,$$ where $A$ is a linear selfadjoint operator and $B$ is a nonlinear(possibly multi-valued)maximal monotone operator in a (real) Hilbert space ${\mathbb H}$ with the normalization $0 \in B (0)$. We use the concept of variational sum introduced by H. Attouch, J.-B. Baillon, and M. Théra, to investigate solutions to the given abstract differential equation. Several applications will be discussed, among them the case where $B = \subdifferential ϕ$, the subdifferential of a convex semicontinuous proper function $ϕ$.
This paper studies the solvability of a class of Dirichlet problem associated with non-linear integro-differential operator. The main ingredient is the probabilistic construction of continuous supersolution via the identification of the continuity set of the exit time operators under Skorohod topology.
We provide sufficient conditions of local solvability for partial differential operators with variable Colombeau coefficients. We mainly concentrate on operators which admit a right generalized pseudodifferential parametrix and on operators which are a bounded perturbation of a differential operator with constant Colombeau coefficients. The local solutions are intended in the Colombeau algebra $\G(\Om)$ as well as in the dual $\LL(\Gc(\Om),\wt{\C})$.
A necessary and sufficient condition for local solvability is presented for the linear partial differential operators $-X^2-Y^2+ia(x)[X,Y]$ in $\bold R^3=\{(x,y,t)\}$, where $X=\partial_x,\; Y=\partial_y+x^k\partial_t$, and $a\in C^{\infty}(\bold R^1)$ is real valued, for each positive integer $k$.
We prove results on solvability of nonlinear elliptic partial differential systems of principle type of second order. They are consequences of existence of non-radial solutions for nonlinear partial differential systems of Poisson type. As applications to geometry, we prove the exsitence of local harmonic maps with given tangent plane at a point between any Riemannan manifolds. More generally geometric objects defined by Beltrami-Laplace always exist locally.
A class of (possibly) degenerate integro-differential equations of parabolic type is considered, which includes the Kolmogorov equations for jump diffusions. Existence and uniqueness of the solutions are established in Bessel potential spaces and in Sobolev-Slobodeckij spaces. Generalisations to stochastic integro-differential equations, arising in filtering theory of jump diffusions, will be given in a forthcoming paper.

Systems of parabolic, possibly degenerate parabolic SPDEs are considered. Existence and uniqueness are established in Sobolev spaces. Similar results are obtained for a class of equations generalizing the deterministic first order symmetric hyperbolic systems.
In this paper, we analyze nonlinear differential equations subject to generalized boundary conditions. More specifically, we provide a framework from which we can provide conditions, which are straightforward to check, for the solvability of a large number of nonlinear scalar boundary value problems. We begin by giving our general strategy which involves the reformulation of our boundary value problem as an operator equation. We then proceed to establish our results and compare them to closely related previous work.
This is an addendum to a previous article, which aims to provide the proofs of some results in that paper (Theorem 7.5 and Proposition 9.15) which were removed from its final version. The reason for such omission is that these proofs follow quite closely others already present in the literature, with minor modifications. I make them publicly available for the sake of completeness.
We discuss linear algebra of infinite-dimensional vector spaces in terms of algebraic (Hamel) bases. As an application we prove the surjectivity of a large class of linear partial differential operators with smooth ($\mathcal C^\infty$-coefficients) coefficients, called in the article \emph{regular}, acting on the algebraic dual $\mathcal D^*(Ω)$ of the space of test-functions $\mathcal D(Ω)$. The surjectivity of the partial differential operators guarantees solvability of the corresponding partial differential equations within $\mathcal D^*(Ω)$. We discuss our result in contrast to and compar…
The paper addresses questions of existence and regularity of solutions to linear partial differential equations whose coefficients are generalized functions or generalized constants in the sense of Colombeau. We introduce various new notions of ellipticity and hypoellipticity, study their interrelation, and give a number of new examples and counterexamples. Using the concept of $\G^\infty$-regularity of generalized functions, we derive a general global regularity result in the case of operators with constant generalized coefficients, a more specialized result for second order operators, and a …
The Riccati equation method is used to establish some global solvability criteria for some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Two oscillation theorems are proved. The results are applied to the Emden - Fowler equation and to the Van der Pol type equation.
We study a model elliptic pseudo-differential equation and simplest boundary value problems for a half-space and a special cone in Sobolev--Slobodetskii spaces which have different smoothness with respect to separate variables. Sufficient conditions for a unique solvability for such boundary value problems are described.
A class of (possibly) degenerate stochastic integro-differential equations of parabolic type is considered, which includes the Zakai equation in nonlinear filtering for jump diffusions. Existence and uniqueness of the solutions are established in Bessel potential spaces.
In this paper we will first present some results about the local solvability property of a class of degenerate second order linear partial differential operators with smooth coefficients. The class under consideration (which in turn is a generalization of the Kannai operator) exhibits a degeneracy due to the interplay between the singularity associated with the characteristic set of a system of vector fields and the vanishing of a function. Afterward we will also discuss some local solvability results for two classes of degenerate second order linear partial differential operators with non-smo…
The aim of this paper is to prove that the well known non solvable Mizohata type partial differential equations have Colombeau generalized solutions which are distributions if and only if they are solv- able in the space of Schwartz distributions. Therefore the Colombeau generalized solvability includes both a new solution concept and new mathematical objects as solutions.
There is studied problem on solvability of linear non-homogeneous differential equation of higher even order. There is proved the theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions on existence of solutions to the equation in the Schwartz space.
Consider $A(x,D):C^{\infty}(Ω,E) \rightarrow C^\infty(Ω,F)$ an elliptic and canceling linear differential operator of order $ν$ with smooth complex coefficients in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$ from a finite dimension complex vector space $E$ to a finite dimension complex vector space $F$ and $A^{*}(x,D)$ {its} adjoint. In this work we characterize the (local) continuous solvability of the partial differential equation $A^{*}(x,D)v=f$ (in the distribution sense) for a given distribution $f$; more precisely we show that any $x_0\inΩ$ is contained in a neighborhood $U\subset Ω$ in which its continuo…
In this article we investigate the solvability of infinite-dimensional differential algebraic equations. Such equations often arise as partial differential-algebraic equations (PDAEs). A decomposition of the state-space that leads to an extension of the Hille-Yosida Theorem on Hilbert spaces for these equations is described. For dissipative partial differential equations the famous Lumer-Phillips generation theorem characterizes solvability and also boundedness of the associated semigroup. An extension of the Lumer-Phillips generation theorem to dissipative differential-algebraic equations is …
The non-local problem is considered for the partial differential equation of mixed-type with Bessel operator and fractional order. An explicit solution is represented by Fourier-Bessel series in the given domain. It is established the connection between the given data and the unique solvability of the problem.
We prove a general existence theorem for nonlinear partial differential systems of any order in one complex variable. A special case of first order contains a well-known theorem of Nijenhuis and Woolf concerning local existence of J-holomorphic curves on almost complex manifolds. As an application to differential geometry, we prove that non constant harmonic map always exists locally from a Riemann surface to a Riemannian manifold with a prescribed tangent vector at a given point.
In this paper, we consider the existence and non-existence of non-trivial solution to a Brezis-Nirenberg type problem with singular weights. First, we obtain a compact imbedding theorem which is an extension of the classical Rellich-Kondrachov compact imbedding theorem, and consider the corresponding eigenvalue problem. Secondly, we deduce a Pohozaev type identity and obtained a non-existence result. Thirdly, based on a generalized concentration compactness principle, we will give some abstract conditions when the functional satisfies the (PS)$_c$ condition. Finally, based on the explicit form…

This is a the first in a series of two articles devoted to the question of local solvability of doubly characteristic second order differential operators. For a large class of such operators, we show that local solvability at a given point implies "essential dissipativity" of the operator at this point. By means of Hoermander's classical necessary condition for local solvability, the proof is reduced to the following question, whose answer forms the core of the paper: Suppose that $Q_A$ and $Q_B$ are two real quadratic forms on a finite dimensional symplectic vector space, and let $Q_C:=\{Q_A,…
We will show a local solvability result for a class of degenerate second order linear partial differential operators with a complex subprincipal symbol. Due to the form of the operators in the class the subprincipal symbol is invariantly defined and we shall give sufficient conditions for the local solvability to hold involving the real and the imaginary part of the latter. Under suitable conditions we will prove that the class under consideration is L^2 to L^2 locally solvable.
We consider an abstract mixed variational problem governed by a nonlinear operator $A$ and a bifunctional $J$, in a real reflexive Banach space $X$. The operator $A$ is assumed to be continuous, Lipschitz continuous on each bounded subset of $X,$ and generalized monotone. First, we pay attention to the unique solvability of the problem. Next, we prove a continuous dependence result of the solution with respect to the data. Based on this result we prove the existence of at least one solution for an associated optimization problem. Finally, we apply our abstract results to the well-posedness and…
This is a the first in a series of two articles devoted to the question of local solvability of doubly characteristic differential operators $L,$ defined, say, in an open set $\Om\subset \RR^n.$ Suppose the principal symbol $p_k$ of $L$ vanishes to second order at $(x_0,ξ_0)\in T^*\Om\setminus 0,$ and denote by $Q_\H$ the Hessian form associated to $p_k$ on $T_{(x_0,ξ_0)}T^*\Om.$ As the main result of this paper, we show (under some rank conditions and some mild additional conditions) that a necessary condition for local solvability of $L$ at $x_0$ is the existence of some $θ\in\RR$ such that …
In this work, we present new results on solvability of the equation $A^{*}(D)f=μ$ for $f \in L^{p}$ and positive measure data $μ$ associated to an elliptic homogeneous linear differential operator $A(D)$ of order m. Our method is based on $(m,p)-$energy control of $μ$ giving a natural characterization for solutions when $1\leq p < \infty$. We also obtain sufficient conditions in the limiting case $p=\infty$ using {new $L^{1}$ estimates on measures for elliptic and canceling operators.
Solvability conditions for some non-Fredholm operators with shifted arguments

On $T \times G$, where $T$ is a compact real-analytic manifold and $G$ is a compact Lie group, we consider differential operators $P$ which are invariant by left translations on $G$ and are elliptic in $T$. Under a mild technical condition, we prove that global hypoellipticity of $P$ implies its global analytic-hypoellipticity (actually Gevrey of any order $s \geq 1$). We also study the connection between the latter property and the notion of global analytic (resp. Gevrey) solvability, but in a much more general setup.
We study the correct solvability of an abstract integro-differential equations in Hilbert space generalizing integro-differential equations arising in the theory of viscoelastisity. The equations under considerations are the abstract hyperbolic equations perturbed by the terms containing Volterra integral operators. We establish the correct solvability in the weighted Sobolev spaces of vector-valued functions on the positive semiaxis.
Local solvability and non-solvability are classified for left-invariant differential operators on the Heisenberg group H_1 of the form L=P_n(X,Y)+Q(X,Y) where the P_n are certain homogeneous polynomials of order n greater than or equal to 2 and Q is of lower order with X= \partial_x, Y=\partial_y+x\partial_w on R^3. We extend previous studies of operators of the form P_n(X,Y) via representations involving ordinary differential operators with a parameter.
We are interested in global properties of systems of left-invariant differential operators on compact Lie groups: regularity properties, properties on the closedness of the range and finite dimensionality of their cohomology spaces, when acting on various function spaces e.g. smooth, analytic and Gevrey. Extending the methods of Greenfield and Wallach (1973) to systems, we obtain abstract characterizations for these properties and use them to derive some generalizations of results due to Greenfield (1972), Greenfield and Wallach (1972), as well as global versions of a result of Caetano and Cor…
In 1957, Hans Lewy constructed a counterexample showing that very simple and natural differential equations can fail to have local solutions. A geometric interpretation and a generalization of this counterexample were given in 1960 by L.Hörmander. In the early seventies, L.Nirenberg and F.Treves proposed a geometric condition on the principal symbol, the so-called condition $(ψ)$, and provided strong arguments suggesting that it should be equivalent to local solvability. The necessity of condition $(ψ)$ for solvability of pseudo-differential equations was proved by L.Hörmander in 1981. In 1994…

In this paper, we consider a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation $ \partial _t β(u) - \nabla \cdot α(x , \nabla u) \ni f$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded domain, where $β: \mathbb{R} \to 2 ^{ \mathbb{R} }$ is a maximal monotone graph satisfying $0 \in β(0)$ and $ \nabla \cdot α(x , \nabla u )$ stands for a generalized $p$-Laplacian. Existence of solution to the initial boundary value problem of this equation has been investigated in an enormous number of papers for the case where single-valuedness, coerciveness, or some growth condition is imposed on $β$. However…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n, n\geq 2$, be an open set. For an elliptic differential operator $L$ on $Ω$ with real analytic coefficients and a point $p\inΩ$, we construct a smooth function $g$ with the following properties: $g$ is flat at $p$ and the equation $Lu=g$ has no smooth local solution $u$ that is flat at $p$.
Local solvability is analyzed for natural families of partial differential operators having double characteristics. In some families the set of all operators that are not locally solvable is shown to have both infinite dimension and infinite codimension.
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong (pointwise) solutions to a linear nonlocal strongly coupled hyperbolic system of equations posed on all of Euclidean space. The system of equations comes from a linearization of a nonlocal model of elasticity in solid mechanics. It is a nonlocal analogue of the Navier-Lamé system of classical elasticity. We use a well-known semigroup technique that hinges on the strong solvability of the corresponding steady-state elliptic system. The leading operator is an integro-differential operator characterized by a distinctive matrix kernel which is used to co…
This paper deals with a parabolic partial differential equation that includes a non-linear nonlocal in time term. This term is the product of a so-called interaction potential and the solution of the problem. The interaction potential depends on a weighted integral of the solution over the entire time interval, where the problem is considered, and satisfies fairly general conditions. Namely, it is assumed to be a continuous bounded from below function that can behave arbitrarily at infinity. This fact implies that the interaction term is not a lower order term in the equation. The weak solvabi…
We prove the unique solvability of second order elliptic equations in non-divergence form in Sobolev spaces. The coefficients of the second order terms are measurable in one variable and VMO in other variables. From this result, we obtain the weak uniqueness of the martingale problem associated with the elliptic equations.
