This is a the first in a series of two articles devoted to the question of local solvability of doubly characteristic second order differential operators. For a large class of such operators, we show that local solvability at a given point implies "essential dissipativity" of the operator at this point. By means of Hoermander's classical necessary condition for local solvability, the proof is reduced to the following question, whose answer forms the core of the paper:
Suppose that $Q_A$ and $Q_B$ are two real quadratic forms on a finite dimensional symplectic vector space, and let $Q_C:=\{Q_A,Q_B\}$ be given by the Poisson bracket of $Q_A$ and $Q_B.$ Then $Q_C$ is again a quadratic form, and we may ask: When can we find a common zero of $Q_A$ and $Q_B$ at which $Q_C$ does not vanish?
The second paper, in combination with the first one, will give a fairly comprehensive picture of what rules local solvability of invariant second order operators on the Heisenberg group.
This is a the first in a series of two articles devoted to the question of local solvability of doubly characteristic differential operators $L,$ defined, say, in an open set $\Om\subset \RR^n.$ Suppose the principal symbol $p_k$ of $L$ vanishes to second order at $(x_0,ξ_0)\in T^*\Om\setminus 0,$ and denote by $Q_\H$ the Hessian form associated to $p_k$ on $T_{(x_0,ξ_0)}T^*\Om.$ As the main result of this paper, we show (under some rank conditions and some mild additional conditions) that a necessary condition for local solvability of $L$ at $x_0$ is the existence of some $θ\in\RR$ such that …
A necessary and sufficient condition for local solvability is presented for the linear partial differential operators $-X^2-Y^2+ia(x)[X,Y]$ in $\bold R^3=\{(x,y,t)\}$, where $X=\partial_x,\; Y=\partial_y+x^k\partial_t$, and $a\in C^{\infty}(\bold R^1)$ is real valued, for each positive integer $k$.
We study the homogeneous elliptic systems of order $2\ell$ with real constant coefficients on Lipschitz domains in $R^n$, $n\ge 4$. For any fixed $p>2$, we show that a reverse Hölder condition with exponent $p$ is necessary and sufficient for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem with boundary data in $L^p$. We also obtain a simple sufficient condition. As a consequence, we establish the solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for $n\ge 4$ and $2-\e< p<\frac{2(n-1)}{n-3} +\e$. The range of $p$ is known to be sharp if $\ell\ge 2$ and $4\le n\le 2\ell +1$. For the polyharmonic equation, th…
We show the existence and the uniqueness of initial traces of nonnegative solutions to a semilinear heat equation on a half space of ${\mathbb R}^N$ under the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Furthermore, we obtain necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on the initial data for the solvability of the corresponding Cauchy--Dirichlet problem. Our necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are sharp and enable us to find optimal singularities of initial data for the solvability of the Cauchy--Dirichlet problem.
We obtain necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the heat equation in a half-space of ${\bf R}^N$ with a nonlinear boundary condition. Furthermore, we study the relationship between the life span of the solution and the behavior of the initial function.
We study necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for the existence of local-in-time solutions of the Cauchy problem for superlinear fractional parabolic equations. Our conditions are sharp and clarify the relationship between the solvability of the Cauchy problem and the strength of the singularities of the initial measure.
The Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Stokes operator with $L^p$ data in any dimension on domains with conical singularity (not necessary a Lipschitz graph) is considered. We establish the solvability of the problem for all $p\in (2-\varepsilon,\infty]$ and also its solvability in $C(\overline{D})$ for the data in $C(\partial D)$
There is studied problem on solvability of linear non-homogeneous differential equation of higher even order. There is proved the theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions on existence of solutions to the equation in the Schwartz space.
In this article, we consider the solvability of two generalized div-curl systems. They are referred to as the equations of magnetostatics and electro- , resp.. Necessary compatibility conditions on the data for the existence of solutions are fully described, and existence of $W^{m, p}$-solutions is proved. Moreover, we give some description for the null spaces. As a corollary, we give the estimates of gradient via generalized ${\rm div}$ and ${\rm curl}$ in $L^p$-framework, which can be considered as Friedrichs inequalities. Furthermore, two decompositions of Sobolev spaces are given.
This paper provides necessary as well as sufficient conditions on the Hurst parameters so that the continuous time parabolic Anderson model $\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\frac{1}{2}\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}+u\dot{W}$ on $[0, \infty)\times {\bf R}^d $ with $d\geq 1$ has a unique random field solution, where $W(t, x)$ is a fractional Brownian sheet on $[0, \infty)\times {\bf R}^d$ and formally $\dot W =\frac{\partial^{d+1}}{\partial t \partial x_1 \cdots \partial x_d} W(t, x)$. When the noise $W(t, x)$ is white in time, our condition is both necessary and sufficient when the initial dat…
It is well known that the Serrin condition is a necessary condition for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the prescribed mean curvature equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with certain regularity. In this paper we investigate the sharpness of the Serrin condition for the vertical mean curvature equation in the product $ M^n \times \mathbb{R} $. Precisely, given a $\mathscr{C}^2$ bounded domain $Ω$ in $M$ and a function $ H = H (x, z) $ continuous in $\overlineΩ\times\mathbb{R}$ and non-decreasing in the variable $z$, we prove that the strong Serrin condition $(n-1)\mathcal…
We consider a locally integrable real-analytic structure, and we investigate the local solvability in the category of Gevrey functions and ultradistributions of the complex d' naturally induced by the de Rham complex. We prove that the so-called condition Y(q) on the signature of the Levi form, for local solvability of d' u=f, is still necessary even if we take f in the classes of Gevrey functions and look for solutions u in the corresponding spaces of ultradistributions.
The paper considers a boundary value problem for the high-order Lavrent'ev-Bitsadze equation. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution are found. When substantiating the existence, the problem of "small denominators" arises. Sufficient conditions for the separability of the "small denominator" from zero are found. An example of a boundary value problem not solvable by the Fourier method is given, in the cases rectangle with integer side measurements.
We study elliptic equations of order $2m$ with nonlocal boundary-value conditions in plane angles and in bounded domains, dealing with the case where the support of nonlocal terms intersects the boundary. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which nonlocal problems are Fredholm in Sobolev spaces and, respectively, in weighted spaces with small weight exponents. We also obtain an asymptotics of solutions to nonlocal problems near the conjugation points on the boundary, where solutions may have power singularities.
We investigate a connection between solvability of the Dirichlet problem for an infinitely degenerate elliptic operator and the validity of an Orlicz-Sobolev inequality in the associated subunit metric space. For subelliptic operators it is known that the classical Sobolev inequality is sufficient and almost necessary for the Dirichlet problem to be solvable with a quantitative bound on the solution [11]. When the degeneracy is of infinite type, a weaker Orlicz-Sobolev inequality seems to be the right substitute [7]. In this paper we investigate this connection further and reduce the gap betwe…
Nonlocal problems for higher-order elliptic operators in dihedral and plane angles are considered. The Green formula is obtained, which leads to adjoint problems that take the form of nonlocal transmission problems in dihedral and plane angles. This allows us to establish necessary conditions of Fredholm solvability and sufficient conditions of one-valued solvability for nonlocal problems in dihedral angles.
In the first part of this article, we complete the program announced in the preliminary note [8] by proving a conjecture presented in [9] that states the equivalence of contractibility and p_{1}-stability for generalized spaces of formal barycenters and hence we get purely algebraic conditions for the solvability of the singular Liouville equation on Riemann surfaces. This relies on a structure decomposition theorem for these model spaces in terms of maximal strata, and on elementary combinatorial arguments based on the selection rules that define such spaces. Moreover, we also show that these…
This monograph presents a comprehensive treatment of second order divergence form elliptic operators with bounded measurable t-independent coefficients in spaces of fractional smoothness, in Besov and weighted Sobolev classes. We establish mapping properties for the double and single layer potentials, as well as the Newton potential, on Besov spaces. We prove extrapolation-type solvability results: that is, we show that solvability of the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary value problem at any given L^p space automatically assures their solvability in an extended range of Besov spaces. We also esta…
In this paper, based on a proposed notion of generalized conjugate harmonic pairs in the framework of complex Clifford analysis, necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of inhomogeneous perturbed generalized Moisil-Teodorescu systems in higher dimensional Euclidean spaces are proved. As an application, we derive corresponding solvability conditions for the inhomogeneous Maxwell's equations.
In this paper the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with Riemman-Liouville fractional derivative is studied. The integral operators with the Wright function in the kernel, associated with the studied equation are introdused and their properties are investigated. In terms of these operators the necessary non-local conditions binding traces of solution and its derivatives on the boundary of a rectangular domain are found. By using the limiting properties of the Wright function the necessary non-local conditions for wave equation are obtained. With the help of the mentioned integral operato…
Local solvability is analyzed for natural families of partial differential operators having double characteristics. In some families the set of all operators that are not locally solvable is shown to have both infinite dimension and infinite codimension.
We obtain necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on the existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a fractional semilinear heat equation with an inhomogeneous term. We identify the strongest spatial singularity of the inhomogeneous term for the solvability of the Cauchy problem.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of some semilinear elliptic boundary value problems involving the Laplace operator with linear and nonlinear highest order boundary conditions involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator.
We present sufficient conditions to have global hypoellipticity for a class of Vekua-type operators defined on a compact Lie group. When the group has the property that every non-trivial representation is not self-dual we show that these sufficient conditions are also necessary. We also present results about the global solvability for this class of operators.
We consider a Cauchy problem for an overdetermined system of PDEs, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for solvability of this Cauchy problem for all data. As an application, we find all real tube hypersurfaces in complex space whose Levi number is maximal.
The Christoffel problem is equivalent to the existence of convex solutions to the Laplace equation on the unit sphere $S^n$. Necessary and sufficient conditions have been found by Firey and Berg, using the Green function of the Laplacian on the sphere. Expressing the Christoffel problem as the Laplace equation on the entire space $R^{n+1}$, we observe that the second derivatives of the solution can be given by the fundamental solutions of the Laplace equations. Therefore we find new and simpler necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the Christoffel problem. We also study th…
In the first part of the article, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of a class of nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems with nonlinear boundary conditions involving the q-Laplace-Beltrami operator. In the second part, we give some additional results on existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence estimates of the weak solutions for these classes of nonlinear problems. Finally, we show that these solutions are also bounded and provide explicit estimates.
