Let X be a smooth elliptic fibration over a smooth base B. Under mild assumptions, we establish a Fourier-Mukai equivalence between the derived categories of two objects, each of which is an O^* gerbe over a genus one fibration which is a twisted form of X. The roles of the gerbe and the twist are interchanged by our duality. We state a general conjecture extending this to allow singular fibers, and we prove the conjecture when X is a surface. The duality extends to an action of the full modular group. This duality is related to the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow version of mirror symmetry, to twisted sheaves, and to non-commutative geometry.
We explore a new direction in representation theory which comes from holomorphic gerbes on complex tori. The analogue of the theta group of a holomorphic line bundle on a (compact) complex torus is developed for gerbes in place of line bundles. The theta group of symmetries of the gerbe has the structure of a Picard groupoid. We calculate it explicitly as a central extension of the group of symmetries of the gerbe by the Picard groupoid of the underlying complex torus. We discuss obstruction to equivariance and give an example of a group of symmetries of a gerbe with respect to which the gerbe…
We study gerbes with connection over an etale stack via noncommutative algebras of differential forms on a groupoid presenting the stack. We then describe a dg-category of modules over any such algebra, which we claim represents a dg-enhancement of the derived category of coherent analytic sheaves on the gerbe in question. This category can be used to phrase and prove Fourier-Mukai type dualities between gerbes and other noncommutative spaces. As an application of the theory, we show that a gerbe with flat connection on a torus is dual (in a sense analogous to Fourier-Mukai duality or T-dualit…
For complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in toric varieties, Gross and Haase-Zharkov have given a conjectural combinatorial description of the special Lagrangian torus fibrations whose existence was predicted by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow. We present a geometric version of this construction, generalizing an earlier conjecture of the first author.
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.
This is an announcement of the following construction: given an integral affine manifold $B$ with singularities, we build a topological space $X$ which is a torus fibration over $B$. The main new feature of the fibration $X\to B$ is that it has the discriminant in codimension 2.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Fermat type quintic \cy hypersurfaces via the method of gradient flow. We also compute the monodromy of the expected special Lagrangian torus fibration and discuss structures of singular fibers.
We consider regular Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $N$-dimensional smooth toric varieties. On such a hypersurface in the neighborhood of the large complex structure limit point we construct a fibration over a sphere $S^{N-1}$ whose generic fibers are tori $T^{N-1}$. Also for certain one-parameter families of such hypersurfaces we show that the monodromy transformation is induced by a translation of the $T^{N-1}$ fibration by a section. Finally we construct a dual fibration and provide some evidence that it describes the mirror family.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety via the method of gradient flow. Using our construction of Lagrangian torus fibration, we are able to prove the symplectic topological version of SYZ mirror conjecture for generic Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety. We will also be able to give precise formulation of SYZ mirror conjecture in general (including singular locus and duality of singular fibres).
We give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibrations with controlled discriminant locus on certain affine varieties. In particular, we apply our construction in the following ways. We find a Lagrangian torus fibration on the 3-fold negative vertex whose discriminant locus has codimension 2; this provides a local model for finding torus fibrations on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds with codimension 2 discriminant locus. Then, we find a Lagrangian torus fibration on a neighbourhood of the one-dimensional stratum of a simple normal crossing divisor (satisfying certain conditions) such that the base o…
In this paper we discuss two major conjectures in Mirror Symmetry: Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture about torus fibrations, and the homological mirror conjecture (about an equivalence of the Fukaya category of a Calabi-Yau manifold and the derived category of coherent sheaves on the dual Calabi-Yau manifold). Our point of view on the origin of torus fibrations is based on the standard differential-geometric picture of collapsing Riemannian manifolds as well as analogous considerations for Conformal Field Theories. It seems to give a description of mirror manifolds much more transparent than th…
We describe in purely combinatorial terms dual pairs of integral affine structures on spheres which come from the conjectural metric collapse of mirror families of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. The same structures arise on the base of a special Lagrangian torus fibration in the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We study the topological torus fibration in the large complex structure limit and show that it coincides with our combinatorial model.
This is an expository article on the Gross--Siebert approach to mirror symmetry and its interactions with the Strominger--Yau--Zaslow conjecture from a topological perspective.
We give a method to construct singular Lagrangian 3-torus fibrations over certain a priori given integral affine manifolds with singularities, which we call simple. The main result of this article is the proof that the topological Calabi-Yau compactifications of M. Gross' "Topological Mirror Symmetry", can be made into symplectic compactifications. As an example, we obtain a pair of compact symplectic 6-manifolds together with Lagrangian fibrations whose underlying affine structures are dual. The symplectic manifolds obtained are homeomorphic to a smooth quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold and its mirro…
Inspired by the work of Gross on topological Mirror Symmetry we construct candidate Lagrangian torus fibration models for the 105 families of smooth Fano threefolds. We prove, in the case the second Betti number is one, that the total space of each fibration is homeomorphic to the expected Fano threefold, and show that the numerical invariants coincide for all 105. Our construction relies on a notion of toric degeneration for affine manifolds with singularities, and the correspondence we obtain between polytopes and Fano manifolds is compatible with that appearing in the work of Coates-Corti-K…
We construct pseudotoric structures (à la Tyurin) on the two-step flag variety $F\ell_{1, n-1; n}$, and explain a general relation between pseudotoric structures and special Lagrangian torus fibrations, the latter of which are important in the study of SYZ mirror symmetry. As an application, we speculate how our constructions can explain the number of terms in the superpotential of Rietsch's Landau-Ginzburg mirror.
This survey article begins with a discussion of the original form of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture, surveys the state of knowledge concering this conjecture, and explains how thinking about this conjecture naturally leads to the program initiated by the author and Bernd Siebert to study mirror symmetry via degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds and log structures.
Let $ϕ:X\rightarrow B$ be a Lagrangian fibration on a projective irreducible hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $\leq8$. Let $M\in {\rm Pic}\,X$ be a line bundle whose restriction to the general fiber $X_b$ of $ϕ$ is topologically trivial. We prove that if the fibration has maximal variation or is isotrivial, the set of points $b$ such that the restriction $M_{\mid X_b}$ is torsion is dense in $B$. We give an application to the Chow ring of $X$. We prove a similar result for elliptic fibrations which gives a toy model for the argument.
The affine line minus one point is the underlying space of the algebraic torus of dimension one. However the fibration of an affine algebraic threefold by the affine line minus one point is not always the quotient morphism of the threefold by the algebraic torus. We investigate the structure of affine algebraic threefolds having fibrations by the affine line minus one point. Our results cover not only algebro-geometric but also topological properties of the threefolds. We also consider when the fibration by the affine line minus one point becomes the quotient morphism by an algebraic torus of …
This is a book aimed at graduate students and researchers in symplectic geometry, based on a course I taught in 2019. The primary message is that the base of a Lagrangian torus fibration inherits an integral affine structure, which you can use to "read off" a lot of interesting geometry of the total space. Topics covered include: action-angle coordinates, symplectic reduction, toric manifolds, visible and tropical Lagrangians, almost toric systems, Milnor fibres of cyclic quotient singularities, mutation of polygons, non-toric blow-up, an almost toric view on Lisca's classification of fillings…
In the first part of this paper we consider compact algebraic manifolds M^2n with an algebraic (n-1)-Torus action. We show that there is a T-invariant meromorphic section $σ$ of the canonical bundle of M. Any such $σ$ defines a divisor D. On the complement M'=M-D we have a trivialization of the canonical bundle and a T-action. If the first cohomology of M' vanishes, then results of [2] imply that there is a Special Lagrangian (SLag) fibration on M'. We study how the fibers compactify in M and give examples of SLag fibrations on M', including some cases there the first cohomology of M' doesn't …
In this article we construct Lagrangian torus fibrations for general quintic \cy hypersurfaces near the large complex limit and their mirror manifolds using gradient flow method. Then we prove the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for this class of \cy manifolds in symplectic category.
We introduce a new method for ``twisting'' relative equivalences of derived categories of sheaves on two spaces over the same base. The first aspect of this is that the derived categories of sheaves on the spaces are twisted. They become derived categories of sheaves on gerbes living over spaces that are locally (on the base) isomorphic to the original spaces. Secondly, this is done in a compatible way so that the equivalence is maintained. We apply this method by proving the conjectures of Donagi and Pantev on dualities between gerbes on genus-one fibrations and comment on other applications …
In this paper, we study the geometry of the SYZ transform on a semi-flat Lagrangian torus fibration. Our starting point is an investigation on the relation between Lagrangian surgery of a pair of straight lines in a symplectic 2-torus and extension of holomorphic vector bundles over the mirror elliptic curve, via the SYZ transform for immersed Lagrangian multi-sections. This study leads us to a new notion of equivalence between objects in the immersed Fukaya category of a general compact symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$, under which the immersed Floer cohomology is invariant; in particular, this p…

In this paper, we pose several conjectures on structures and images of maximal rationally connected fibrations of smooth projective varieties admitting semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Toward these conjectures, we prove that the canonical bundle of images of such fibrations is not big. Our proof gives a generalization of Yang's solution using RC positivity for Yau's conjecture. As an application, we show that any compact Kähler surface with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature is rationally connected, or a complex torus, or a ruled surface over an elliptic curve.
We construct stable sheaves over K3 fibrations using a relative Fourier-Mukai transform which describes the sheaves in terms of spectral data similar to the construction for elliptic fibrations. On K3 fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds we show that the Fourier-Mukai transform induces an embedding ion of the relative Jacobian of spectral line bundles on spectral covers into the moduli space of sheaves of given invariants. This makes the moduli space of spectral sheaves to a generic torus fibration over the moduli space of curves of given arithmetic genus on the Calabi-Yau manifold.
In 1996, Strominger, Yau and Zaslow made a conjecture about the geometric relationship between two mirror Calabi-Yau manifolds. Roughly put, if X and Y are a mirror pair of such manifolds, then X should possess a special Lagrangian torus fibration $f:X\to B$ such that Y is obtained by dualizing the fibration f. This leaves a huge amount to be done to verify such conjectures. This paper takes a speculative point of view, in that it assumes that a special Lagrangian torus fibration exists on X. We address a number of questions of a topological nature: what is the relationship between the cohomol…
This paper focuses on a topological version on the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror symmetry conjecture. Roughly put, the SYZ conjecture suggests that mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds are related by the existence of dual special Lagrangian torus fibrations. We explore this conjecture without reference to the special Lagrangian condition. In this setting, natural questions include: does there exist a nice class of T^3-fibrations for which the dual fibration can be constructed? Do such fibrations exist on a manifold such as the quintic threefold? If so, is the dual fibration the mirror? We answe…
We continue the study of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror symmetry conjecture. Roughly put, this states that if two Calabi-Yau manifolds X and Y are mirror partners, then X and Y have special Lagrangian torus fibrations which are dual to each other. Much work on this conjecture is necessarily of a speculative nature, as in dimension 3 it is still a very difficult problem of how to construct such fibrations. Nevertheless, assuming the existence of such fibrations there are many things one can prove. This paper covers a number of issues. First it applies results from the theory of completely int…
Let π: M \ra B be a Lagrangian torus fibration with singularities such that the fibers are of Maslov index zero, and unobstructed. The paper constructs a rigid analytic space M_0^\chk over the Novikov field which is a deformation of the semi-flat complex structure of the dual torus fibration over the smooth locus B_0 of π. Transition functions of M_0^\chk are obtained via A-\infty homomorphisms which capture the wall-crossing phenomenon of moduli spaces of holomorphic disks.
We discuss various topics on degenerations and special Lagrangian torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of mirror symmetry. A particular emphasis is on Tyurin degenerations and the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture, which builds a bridge between mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and that for quasi-Fano manifolds. The proof of the conjecture is of interest in its own right and leads us to a few other related topics such as SYZ mirror symmetry, theta functions and geometric quantization. Inspired by the conjecture, we also propose a new construction of Landau-Ginzburg mod…
The Abstract for this revised version is the following: Let k be a number field, let C be a smooth, projective and geometrically integral k-curve and let p:X --> C be a Severi-Brauer k-fibration of squarefree index. Various authors have studied the cokernel of the natural map CH_{0}(X/C)-->\bigoplus_{v}CH_{0}(X_{v}/C_{v}), where CH_{0}(X/C) is the kernel of p_{*}:CH_{0}(X)-->CH_{0}(C). In this paper I obtain an exact sequence which relates the Tate-Shafarevich group of the kernel of the above map to the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Neron-Severi torus of X. I then obtain conditions under which…
Let $k$ be a number field and let $T$ be a $k$-torus. Consider a fibration in torsors under $T$, i.e. a morphism $f: X \to \mathbb{P}^1_k$ from a smooth, projective $k$-variety $X$ to $\mathbb{P}^1_k$ such that the generic fibre $X_η\to η$ is a smooth compactification of a principal homogeneous space under $T \times_k η$. We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for $X$, under Schinzel's hypothesis, thereby generalizing recent work of Wei. Our results are unconditional if $k = \mathbb{Q}$ and the non-split fibres of $f$ are defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.
In this article we give formulas for the Riemann-Roch number of a symplectic quotient arising as the reduced space corresponding to a coadjoint orbit (for an orbit close to 0) as an evaluation of cohomology classes over the reduced space at 0. This formula exhibits the dependence of the Riemann-Roch number on the Lie algebra variable which specifies the orbit. We also express the formula as a sum over the components of the fixed point set of the maximal torus. Our proof applies to Hamiltonian G-manifolds even if they do not have a compatible Kahler structure, using the definition of quantisati…
Grothendieck and Harder proved that every principal bundle over the projective line with split reductive structure group (and trivial over the generic point) can be reduced to a maximal torus. Furthermore, this reduction is unique modulo automorphisms and the Weyl group. In a series of six variations on this theme, we prove corresponding results for principal bundles over the following schemes and stacks: (1) a line modulo the group of nth roots of unity; (2) a football, that is, an orbifold of genus zero with two marked points; (3) a gerbe over a football whose structure group is the nth root…
This paper is devoted to the estimation of the number of points of bounded height on fibrations in toric varieties over algebraic varieties, generalizing previous work by Strauch and the second author. Under reasonable hypotheses on ``Arakelov L-functions'' of the base, we show how to deduce a good estimate for the open subset of the total space of the unerlying fibration in torus. In passing, we improve drastically the error term for toric varieties themselves, generalizing a theorem by de la Breteche over any number field.
For a toric Calabi-Yau (CY) orbifold $\mathcal{X}$ whose underlying toric variety is semi-projective, we construct and study a non-toric Lagrangian torus fibration on $\mathcal{X}$, which we call the Gross fibration. We apply the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) recipe to the Gross fibration of $\mathcal{X}$ to construct its mirror with the instanton corrections coming from genus 0 open orbifold Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants, which are virtual counts of holomorphic orbi-disks in $\mathcal{X}$ bounded by fibers of the Gross fibration. We explicitly evaluate all these invariants by first proving an o…
We prove that the three-dimensional Iwasawa manifold $X$, viewed as a locally holomorphically trivial fibration by elliptic curves over its two-dimensional Albanese torus, is self-dual in the sense that the base torus identifies canonically with its dual torus under a sesquilinear duality, the Jacobian torus of $X$, while the fibre identifies with itself. To this end, we derive elements of Hodge theory for arbitrary sGG manifolds, introduced in earlier joint work of the author with L. Ugarte, to construct in an explicit way the Albanese torus and map of any sGG manifold. These definitions coin…

We construct a Lagrangian torus fibration on a smooth hypertoric variety and a corresponding SYZ mirror variety using $T$-duality and generating functions of open Gromov-Witten invariants. The variety is singular in general. We construct a resolution using the wall and chamber structure of the SYZ base.
