We initiate a Stein's method approach to the study of the Plancherel measure of the symmetric group. A new proof of Kerov's central limit theorem for character ratios of random representations of the symmetric group on transpositions is obtained; the proof gives an error term. The construction of an exchangeable pair needed for applying Stein's method arises from the theory of harmonic functions on Bratelli diagrams. We also find the spectrum of the Markov chain on partitions underlying the construction of the exchangeable pair. This yields an intriguing method for studying the asymptotic decomposition of tensor powers of some representations of the symmetric group.
In this paper we study the Plancherel formula for a new class of homogeneous spaces for real reductive Lie groups; these spaces are fibered over non-Riemannian symmetric spaces, and they exhibit a phenomenon of uniform infinite multiplicities. They also provide examples of non-tempered representations of the group appearing in the Plancherel formula. Several classes of examples are given.
We obtain the Plancherel decomposition for a reductive symmetric space in the sense of representation theory. Our starting point is the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions, obtained in part I (math.RT/0107063). The formula for Schwartz functions involves Eisenstein integrals obtained by a residual calculus. In the present paper we identify these integrals as matrix coefficients of the generalized principal series.
We prove the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions on a reductive symmetric space. Our starting point is an inversion formula for spherical smooth compactly supported functions. The latter formula was earlier obtained from the most continuous part of the Plancherel formula by means of a residue calculus. In the course of the present paper we also obtain new proofs of the uniform tempered estimates for normalized Eisenstein integrals and of the Maass-Selberg relations satisfied by the associated C-functions.
We discuss kernels on complact classical groups $G=\U(n)$, $\OO(2n)$, $\Sp(n)$ defined by the formula $K(z,u)=|\det(1-zu^*)|^s$. We obtain the explicit Plancherel formula for these kernels and the interval of positive-definiteness. We also obtain explicit models for Sahi's 'unipotent' representations.
Yiannis Sakellaridis and Akshay Venkathesh have determined, when the group $G$ is split and the field $\F$ is of characteristic zero, the Plancherel formula for any spherical space $X$ for $G$ modulo the knowledge of the discrete spectrum. The starting point is the determination of good neighborhoods at infinity of $X/J$, where $J$ is a small compact open subgroup of $G$. These neighborhoods are related to "boundary degenerations" of $X$. The proof of their existence is made by using wonderful compactifications. In this article we will show the existence of such neighborhoods assuming that $\F…
We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjec…
Consider the space B of complex $p\times q$ matrces with norm <1. There exists a standard one-parameter family $S_a$ of unitary representations of the pseudounitary group U(p,q) in the space of holomorphic functions on B (i.e. scalar highest weight representations). Consider the restriction $T_a$ of $S_a$ to the pseudoorthogonal group O(p,q). The representation of O(p,q) in $L^2$ on the symmetric space $O(p,q)/O(p)\times O(q)$ is a limit of the representations $T_a$ in some precise sence. Spectrum of a representation $T_a$ is comlicated and it depends on $α$. We obtain the complete Plancherel …
We obtain a family of matrix integrals which decompose to a product of Gamma-functions (they have some relations with S.G.Gindikin 'Beta', but generally speaking essentially differ from it). We obtain Plancherel formula for Berezin representations for all series of classical groups (for large values of parameters of representations). The Berezin representations are deformations of L^2 on Riemann noncompact symmetric spaces G/K defined by Berezin kernels, i.e powers of |det(1-zu^*)| (in matrix ball models). These representations also can be obtained by restrictions of holomorphic representation…
Vershik and Kerov conjectured in 1985 that dimensions of irreducible representations of finite symmetric groups, after appropriate normalization, converge to a constant with respect to the Plancherel family of measures on the space of Young diagrams. The statement of the Vershik-Kerov conjecture can be seen as an analogue of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman Theorem for the non-stationary Markov process of the growth of a Young diagram. The limiting constant is then interpreted as the entropy of the Plancherel measure. The main result of the paper is the proof of the Vershik-Kerov conjecture. The a…
We consider a Markov evolution of lozenge tilings of a quarter-plane and study its asymptotics at large times. One of the boundary rays serves as a reflecting wall. We observe frozen and liquid regions, prove convergence of the local correlations to translation-invariant Gibbs measures in the liquid region, and obtain new discrete Jacobi and symmetric Pearcey determinantal point processes near the wall. The model can be viewed as the one-parameter family of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional orthogonal group, and we use this interpretation to derive the determinantal formula for …
Consider random Young diagrams with a fixed number n of boxes, where the probability distribution on diagrams is determined by the Plancherel measure. That is, the weight of a diagram is proportional to the squared dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n. As n goes to infinity, the boundary of the (suitably scaled) random diagram concentrates near a curve Omega (Logan-Shepp 1977, Vershik-Kerov 1977). In 1993, Kerov announced a central limit theorem describing Gaussian fluctuations of random diagrams around the limit shape Omega. Here we propose a re…
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.
Relative dimensions of isotypic components of N-th order tensor representations of the symmetric group on n letters give a Plancherel-type measure on the space of Young diagrams with n cells and at most N rows. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that dimensions of isotypic components of tensor representations of finite symmetric groups, after appropriate normalization, converge to a constant with respect to this family of Plancherel-type measures in the limit when N/sqrt{n} converges to a constant. The main result of the paper is the proof of this conjecture.
We prove a complex version of Kostant's non-linear convexity theorem. Applications to the construction of G-invariant Grauert tubes of non-compact Riemannian symmetric G/K spaces are given.
We consider three uniqueness theorems: one from the theory of meromorphic functions, another one from asymptotic combinatorics, and the third one about representations of the infinite symmetric group. The first theorem establishes the uniqueness of the function~$\exp z$ in a class of entire functions. The second one is about the uniqueness of a random monotone nondegenerate numbering of the two-dimensional lattice~$\Bbb Z^2_+$, or of a nondegenerate central measure on the space of infinite Young tableaux. And the third theorem establishes the uniqueness of a representation of the infinite symm…
An irreducible character of a finite group $G$ is called quasi $p$-Steinberg character for a prime $p$ if it takes a nonzero value on every $p$-regular element of $G$. In this article, we classify the quasi $p$-Steinberg characters of Symmetric ($S_n$) and Alternating ($A_n$) groups and their double covers. In particular, an existence of a non-linear quasi $p$-Steinberg character of $S_n$ implies $n \leq 8$ and of $A_n$ implies $n \leq 9$.
The Plancherel decomposition of $L^2$ on a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space $GL(n,C)/GL(n,R)$ has spectrum of $[n/2]$ types. We write explicitly orthogonal projectors separating spectrum into uniform pieces
We study the Knapp-Stein $R$--groups for inner forms of the split group $SL_n(F),$ with $F$ a $p$--adic field of characteristic zero. Thus, we consider the groups $SL_m(D),$ with $D$ a central division algebra over $F$ of dimension $d^2,$ and $m=n/d.$ We use the generalized Jacquet-Langlands correspondence and results of the first named author to describe the zeros of Plancherel measures. Combined with a study of the behavior of the stabilizer of representations by elements of the Weyl group we are able to determine the Knapp-Stein $R$--groups in terms of those for $SL_n(F).$ We show the $R$--…
Stein's method is used to prove limit theorems for random character ratios. Tools are developed for four types of structures: finite groups, Gelfand pairs, twisted Gelfand pairs, and association schemes. As one example an error term is obtained for a central limit theorem of Kerov on the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by i-cycles, or equivalently for the character ratio of a Plancherel distributed representation on an i-cycle. Other main examples include an error term for a central limit theorem of Ivanov on character ratios of random projective representations o…
We provide a Lagrangian construction for the fixed-point subalgebra, together with its idempotent form, in a quasi-split symmetric pair of type $A_{n-1}$. This is obtained inside the limit of a projective system of Borel-Moore homologies of the Steinberg varieties of $n$-step isotropic flag varieties. Arising from the construction are a basis of homological origin for the idempotent form and a geometric realization of rational modules.
Let $G$ be a simple Lie Group with finite center, and let $K\subset G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. We say that $G$ is a Lie group of tube type if $G/K$ is a hermitian symmetric space of tube type. For such a Lie group $G$, we can find a parabolic subgroup $P=MAN$, with given Langlands decomposition, such that $N$ is abelian, and $N$ admits a generic character with compact stabilizer. We will call any parabolic subgroup $P$ satisfying this properties a Siegel parabolic. Let $(π,V)$ be an admissible, smooth, Fréchet representation of a Lie group of tube type $G$, and let $P \subset G$ be a Si…
If a partition $λ$ of size n is chosen randomly according to the Plancherel measure $P_n[λ] = (\dim λ)^2/n!$, then as n goes to infinity, the rescaled shape of $λ$ is with high probability very close to a non-random continuous curve $Ω$ known as the Logan-Shepp-Kerov-Vershik curve. Moreover, the rescaled deviation of $λ$ from this limit shape can be described by an explicit generalized gaussian process. In this paper, we investigate the analoguous problem when $λ$ is chosen with probability proportional to $\dim λ$ instead of $(\dim λ)^2$. We shall use very general arguments due to Ivanov and …
For a symmetric pair $(G,H)$ of reductive groups we extend to a large class of generalized principal series representations our previous construction of meromorphic families of symmetry breaking operators. These operators intertwine between a possibly vector-valued principal series of $G$ and one for $H$ and are given explicitly in terms of their integral kernels. As an application we give a complete classification of symmetry breaking operators from spinors on a Euclidean space to spinors on a hyperplane, intertwining for a double cover of the conformal group of the hyperplane.

It was proved by Huckleberry that the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain is included in the ``Iwasawa domain'' using complex analysis. But we can see that we need no complex analysis to prove it. In this paper, we generalize the notions of the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain and the Iwasawa domain for two associated symmetric subgroups in real Lie groups and prove the inclusion. Moreover, by the symmetry of two associated symmetric subgroups, we also give a direct proof of the known fact that the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain is included in all cycle spaces.
Recently, Gekeler proved that the group of invertible analytic functions modulo constant functions on Drinfeld's upper half space is isomorphic to the dual of an integral generalized Steinberg representation. In this note we show that the group of invertible functions is the dual of a universal extension of that Steinberg representation. As an application, we show that lifting obstructions of rigid analytic theta cocycles of Hilbert modular forms in the sense of Darmon--Vonk can be computed in terms of $\mathcal{L}$-invariants of the associated Galois representation. The same argument applies …
For a symmetric pair $(G,H)$ of reductive groups we construct a family of intertwining operators between spherical principal series representations of $G$ and $H$ that are induced from parabolic subgroups satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The operators are given explicitly in terms of their integral kernels and we prove convergence of the integrals for an open set of parameters and meromorphic continuation. We further discuss uniqueness of intertwining operators, and for the rank one cases $$ (G,H)=(SU(1,n;\mathbb{F}),S(U(1,m;\mathbb{F})\times U(n-m;\mathbb{F}))), \qquad \mathbb{F}=…
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space of split rank $1$ and let $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. In a previous article the first two authors introduced a notion of cusp forms for $G/H$. We show that the space of cusp forms coincides with the closure of the $K$-finite generalized matrix coefficients of discrete series representations if and only if there exist no $K$-spherical discrete series representations. Moreover, we prove that every $K$-spherical discrete series representation occurs with multiplicity $1$ in the Plancherel decomposition of $G/H$.
Random walk on the set of irreducible representations of a finite group is investigated. For the symmetric and general linear groups, a sharp convergence rate bound is obtained and a cutoff phenomenon is proved. As related results, an asymptotic description of Plancherel measure of the finite general linear groups is given, and a connection of these random walks with quantum computing is noted.
We show that Kerov's central limit theorem related to the fluctuations of Young diagrams under the Plancherel measure extends to the case of Schur-Weyl measures, which are the probability measures on partitions associated to the representations of the symmetric groups $S_n$ on tensor products of vector spaces $V^{\otimes n}$ (cf. arXiv:math/0006111). More precisely, the fluctuations are exactly the same up to a translation of the diagrams along the x-axis. Our proof is inspired by the one given by Ivanov and Olshanski in arXiv:math/0304010 for the Plancherel measure, and it relies on the combi…
We prove Dipendra Prasad's conjecture on the distinction of the Steinberg representation for symmetric spaces of the form G(E)/G(F), where G is a split reductive group defined over F and E/F an unramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields.
We consider the (projective) representations of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a symmetric tube domain $V\oplus iΩ$ that are obtained by analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series. For a representation corresponding to a discrete point in the Wallach set, we find the decomposition under restriction to the identity component of $GL(Ω)$. Using Riesz distributions, an explicit intertwining operator is constructed as an analytic continuation of an integral operator. The density for the Plancherel measure involves quotients of $Γ$-functions and the $c$-function for a symmet…
The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the …
In this thesis, we investigate the asymptotics of random partitions chosen according to probability measures coming from the representation theory of the symmetric groups $S_n$ and of the finite Chevalley groups $GL(n,F_q)$ and $Sp(2n,F_q)$. More precisely, we prove laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the $q$-Plancherel measures of type A and B, the Schur-Weyl measures and the Gelfand measures. Using the RSK algorithm, it also gives results on longest increasing subsequences in random words. We develop a technique of moments (and cumulants) for random partitions, thereby using…
There are some new developments on Plancherel formula and growth of matrix coefficients for unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups. These have several consequences for the geometry of weakly symmetric spaces and analysis on parabolic subgroups of real semisimple Lie groups, and to (infinite dimensional) locally nilpotent Lie groups. Many of these consequences are still under development. In this note I'll survey a few of these new aspects of representation theory for nilpotent Lie groups and parabolic subgroups.
The convolution of indicators of two conjugacy classes on the symmetric group S_q is usually a complicated linear combination of indicators of many conjugacy classes. Similarly, a product of the moments of the Jucys--Murphy element involves many conjugacy classes with complicated coefficients. In this article we consider a combinatorial setup which allows us to manipulate such products easily and we show that it very closely related to the combinatorial approach to random matrices. Our formulas are exact (in a sense that they hold not only asymptotically for large q). This result has many inte…
We combine recent developments on weakly symmetric pseudo--riemannian nilmanifolds with with geometric methods for construction of unitary representations on square integrable Dolbeault cohomology spaces. This runs parallel to construction of discrete series representations on spaces of square integrable harmonic forms with values in holomorphic vector bundles over flag domains. Some special cases had been described by Satake in 1971 and the author in 1975. Here we develop a theory of pseudo--riemannian nilmanifolds of complex type and the nilmanifold versions of flag domains. We construct the…
We study asymptotics of reducible representations of the symmetric groups S_q for large q. We decompose such a representation as a sum of irreducible components (or, alternatively, Young diagrams) and we ask what is the character of a randomly chosen component (or, what is the shape of a randomly chosen Young diagram). Our main result is that for a large class of representations the fluctuations of characters (and fluctuations of the shape of the Young diagrams) are asymptotically Gaussian; in this way we generalize Kerov's central limit theorem. The considered class consists of representation…
We show that with respect to the q-Plancherel measure on partitions of size n, the irreducible characters of an Hecke algebra $H_q(S_n)$ are concentrated around the normalized trace of $H_q(S_n)$. More precisely, we prove that the deviations of the values of the q-characters $χ^λ_q$ are asymptotically gaussian, and we give an explicit formula for the covariances of the limit normal laws (the other results were already in arXiv:1001.2180). Our proof involves Sniady's theory of cumulants of observables of diagrams and a Möbius inversion formula for additive class functions on symmetric groups.
A well-known theorem of Burnside says that if $ρ$ is a faithful representation of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $0$, then every irreducible representation of $G$ appears as a constituent of a tensor power of $ρ$. In 1962, R. Steinberg gave a module theoretic proof that simultaneously removed the constraint on the characteristic, and allowed the group to be replaced by a monoid. Brauer subsequently simplified Burnside's proof and, moreover, showed that if the character of $ρ$ takes on $r$ distinct values, then the first $r$ tensor powers of $ρ$ already contain amongst them a…
Let $X=G/K$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of the non-compact type and let $S\in G^\mbb{C}$ be the associated compression semi-group. Let $Γ$ be a discrete subgroup of $G$. We give a sufficient condition for $Γ\backslash S$ to be a Stein manifold. Moreover, we show that in general $Γ\backslash S$ is not Stein, which disproves a conjecture by Achab, Betten and Krötz.
The representation theory of the symmetric group has been intensively studied for over 100 years and is one of the gems of modern mathematics. The full transformation monoid $\mathfrak T_n$ (the monoid of all self-maps of an $n$-element set) is the monoid analogue of the symmetric group. The investigation of its representation theory was begun by Hewitt and Zuckerman in 1957. Its character table was computed by Putcha in 1996 and its representation type was determined in a series of papers by Ponizovski{\uı}, Putcha and Ringel between 1987 and 2000. From their work, one can deduce that the glo…
