The main change is an expanded discussion of motivation of these random walks (requested by a referee). A connection with quantum computing is also noted
Random walk on the set of irreducible representations of a finite group is investigated. For the symmetric and general linear groups, a sharp convergence rate bound is obtained and a cutoff phenomenon is proved. As related results, an asymptotic description of Plancherel measure of the finite general linear groups is given, and a connection of these random walks with quantum computing is noted.
Random walk on the irreducible representations of the symmetric and general linear groups is studied. A separation distance cutoff is proved and the exact separation distance asymptotics are determined. A key tool is a method for writing the multiplicities in the Kronecker tensor powers of a fixed representation as a sum of non-negative terms. Connections are made with the Lagrange-Sylvester interpolation approach to Markov chains.
Consider a branching random walk, where the branching mechanism is governed by a Galton-Watson process, and the migration by a finite range symmetric irreducible random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Let $Z_n(z)$ be the number of the particles in the $n$-th generation at the point $z\in \mathbb{Z}^d$. Under the mild moment conditions for offspring distribution of the underlying Galton-Watson, we derive a second order expansion in the local limit theorem for $Z_n(z)$ for each given $z\in \mathbb{Z}^d$. That generalizes the results for simple branching random walks obtained by Gao […
We show existence of the weak large deviation principle, with a convex rate function, for the renormalized distance from the starting point of irreducible random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups. Under the assumption of finiteness of exponential moments, the full large deviation principle holds, and the rate function governing it can be expressed as the Fenchel-Legendre transform of the limiting logarithmic moment generating function of the sequence of renormalized distances.
Let $n = b_1 + ... + b_k = b_1' + \cdot + b_k'$ be a pair of compositions of $n$ into $k$ positive parts. We say this pair is {\em irreducible} if there is no positive $j < k$ for which $b_1 + ... b_j = b_1' + ... b_j'$. The probability that a random pair of compositions of $n$ is irreducible is shown to be asymptotic to $8/n$. This problem leads to a problem in probability theory. Two players move along a game board by rolling a die, and we ask when the two players will first coincide. A natural extension is to show that the probability of a first return to the origin at time $n$ for any mean…
We analyze the drunkard's walk on the unit sphere with step size theta and show that the walk converges in order constant/sin^2(theta) steps in the discrepancy metric. This is an application of techniques we develop for bounding the discrepancy of random walks on Gelfand pairs generated by bi-invariant measures. In such cases, Fourier analysis on the acting group admits tractable computations involving spherical functions. We advocate the use of discrepancy as a metric on probabilities for state spaces with isometric group actions.
The aim of this paper is the study of the strong local survival property for discrete-time and continuous-time branching random walks. We study this property by means of an infinite dimensional generating function G and a maximum principle which, we prove, is satisfied by every fixed point of G. We give results about the existence of a strong local survival regime and we prove that, unlike local and global survival, in continuous time, strong local survival is not a monotone property in the general case (though it is monotone if the branching random walk is quasi transitive). We provide an exa…
We consider an irreducible finite range random walk on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice and study asymptotic behaviour of its transition function $p(n; x)$. In particular, for simple random walk our asymptotic formula is valid as long as $n (n - |x|_1)^{-2}$ tends to zero.
In this paper we apply techniques of spherical harmonic analysis to prove a local limit theorem, a rate of escape theorem, and a central limit theorem for isotropic random walks on arbitrary thick regular affine buildings of irreducible type.
We consider point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the largest extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel or the Fréchet distributions. The proofs heavily depend on precise large deviation results for sums of independent random variables with a finite moment generating function or with a subexponential distribution.
We study the analogues of irreducibility, period, and communicating classes for open quantum random walks, as defined by Attal et al. (J. Stat. Phys., 2012). We recover results similar to the standard ones for Markov chains, in terms of ergodic behavior, decomposition into irreducible subsystems, and characterization of stationary states.
Generalized Friedman urn is one of the simplest and most useful models considered in probability theory. Since Athreya and Ney (1972) showed the almost sure convergence of urn proportions in a randomized urn model with irreducible replacement matrix under the $L\log L$ moment assumption, this assumption has been regarded as the weakest moment assumption, but the necessary has never been shown. In this paper, we study the strong and weak convergence of generalized Friedman urns. It is proved that, when the random replacement matrix is irreducible in probability, the sufficient and necessary mom…
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
We consider Pólya urns with infinitely many colours that are of a random walk type, in two related version. We show that the colour distribution a.s., after rescaling, converges to a normal distribution, assuming only second moments on the offset distribution. This improves results by Bandyopadhyay and Thacker (2014--2017; convergence in probability), and Mailler and Marckert (2017; a.s. convergence assuming exponential moment).
We use Kashiwara crystal basis theory to associate a random walk W to each irreducible representation V of a simple Lie algebra. This is achieved by endowing the crystal attached to V with a (possibly non uniform) probability distribution compatible with its weight graduation. We then prove that the generalized Pitmann transform defined by Biane, Bougerol and O'Connell for similar random walks with uniform distributions yields yet a Markov chain. When the representation is minuscule, and the associated random walk has a drift in the Weyl chamber, we establish that this Markov chain has the sam…
Let $W_n, n\in\mn_{0}$ be an intrinsic martingale with almost sure limit $W$ in a supercritical branching random walk. We provide criteria for the $L_p$-convergence of the series $\sum_{n\ge 0} e^{an}(W-W_n)$ for $p>1$ and $a>0$. The result may be viewed as a statement about the exponential rate of convergence of $\me |W-W_n|^p$ to zero.
The one-dimensional elephant random walk is a typical model of discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, and is introduced by Schütz and Trimper (2004). It has a parameter $α\in (-1,1)$: The case $α=0$ corresponds to the simple symmetric random walk, and when $α>0$ (resp. $α<0$), the mean displacement of the walker at time $n$ grows (resp. vanishes) like $n^α$. The walk admits a phase transition at $α=1/2$ from the diffusive behavior to the superdiffusive behavior. In this paper, we study the rate of the moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the position of the walker wh…
We give a new proof of a result of Kenyon that the growth exponent for loop-erased random walks in two dimensions is 5/4. The proof uses the convergence of LERW to Schramm-Loewner evolution with parameter 2, and is valid for irreducible bounded symmetric random walks on any two-dimensional discrete lattice.
We establish limit theorems for U-statistics indexed by a random walk on Z^d and we express the limit in terms of some Levy sheet Z(s,t). Under some hypotheses, we prove that the limit process is Z(t,t) if the random walk is transient or null-recurrent ant that it is some stochastic integral with respect to Z when the walk is positive recurrent. We compare our results with results for random walks in random scenery.
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the elephant random walk model. Compared to the usual elephant random walk, an interesting feature of this model is that the step sizes form a sequence of positive independent and identically distributed random variables instead of a fixed constant. For this model, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm, the central limit theorem, and we obtain rates of convergence in the central limit theorem with respect to the Kologmorov, Zolotarev and Wasserstein distances. We emphasize that, even in case of the usual elephant random walk, our results …
We first study the convergence of solutions of a system of F-KPP equations related to irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions with Heaviside-type initial conditions to traveling wave solutions. Then we apply this convergence result to prove that the extremal processes of irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions converges weakly to a cluster point process.
We use generalized Ray-Knight theorems introduced by Bálint Tóth in 1996 together with techniques developed for excited random walks as main tools for establishing positive and negative results concerning convergence of some classes of diffusively scaled self-interacting random walks (SIRWs) to Brownian motions perturbed at extrema (BMPE). Tóth's work studied two classes of SIRWs: asymptotically free and polynomially self-repelling walks. For both classes Toth has shown, in particular, that the distribution function of a scaled SIRW observed at independent geometric times converges to that of …
In this paper we examine the rate of convergence of one of the standard algorithms for emulating exit probabilities of Brownian motion, the Walk on Spheres (WoS) algorithm. We obtain the complete characterization of the rate of convergence of WoS in terms of the local geomnetry of a domain.
Biggins [Uniform convergence of martingales in the branching random walk. {\em Ann. Probab.}, 20(1):137--151, 1992] proved local uniform convergence of additive martingales in $d$-dimensional supercritical branching random walks at complex parameters $λ$ from an open set $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{C}^d$. We investigate the martingales corresponding to parameters from the boundary $\partial Λ$ of $Λ$. The boundary can be decomposed into several parts. There may be a part of the boundary, on which the martingales do not exist, on other parts it exists, but diverges or vanishes in the limit. In the rema…
Let $η^*_n$ denote the maximum, at time $n$, of a nonlattice one-dimensional branching random walk $η_n$ possessing (enough) exponential moments. In a seminal paper, Aidekon demonstrated convergence of $η^*_n$ in law, after recentering, and gave a representation of the limit. We give here a shorter proof of this convergence by employing reasoning motivated by Bramson, Ding and Zeitouni. Instead of spine methods and a careful analysis of the renewal measure for killed random walks, our approach employs a modified version of the second moment method that may be of independent interest.
It is classical to approximate the distribution of fractional Brownian motion by a renormalized sum $ S_n $ of dependent Gaussian random variables. In this paper we consider such a walk $ Z_n $ that collects random rewards $ ξ_j $ for $ j \in \mathbb Z,$ when the ceiling of the walk $ S_n $ is located at $ j.$ The random reward (or scenery) $ ξ_j $ is independent of the walk and with heavy tail. We show the convergence of the sum of independent copies of $ Z_n$ suitably renormalized to a stable motion with integral representation, whose kernel is the local time of a fractional Brownian motion …
We consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$ with a stationary and ergodic environment $ξ=(ξ_n)$ indexed by time $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$ and $\tilde Z_n(t)=\int e^{tx}Z_n(dx)$ be its Laplace transform. We show the $L^p$ convergence rate and the uniform convergence of the martingale $\tilde Z_n(t)/\mathbb E[\tilde Z_n(t)|ξ]$, and establish a moderate deviation principle for the measures $Z_n$.
We continue the line of research of random walks with barrier initiated by Iksanov and M{ö}hle (2008). Assuming that the tail of the step of the underlying random walk has a power-like behavior at infinity with exponent $-α$, $α\in(0,1)$, we prove that the number $V_n$ of zero increments in the random walk with barrier, properly centered and normalized, converges weakly to the standard normal law. This refines previously known weak law of large numbers for $V_n$ proved in Iksanov and Negadailov (2008).
In recent work we have shown that loop-erased random walk (LERW) connecting two boundary points of a domain converges to the chordal Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE(2)) in the sense of curves parametrized by Minkowski content. In this note we explain how to derive the analogous result for LERW from a boundary point to an interior point, converging towards radial SLE(2).
We consider the rates of convergence of the quenched central limit theorem for hitting times of one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. Previous results had identified polynomial upper bounds for the rates of decay which are sometimes slower than $n^{-1/2}$ (the optimal rate in the classical Berry-Esseen estimates). Here we prove that the previous upper bounds are in fact the best possible polynomial rates for the quenched CLT.
Considering a critical branching random walk on the real line. In a recent paper, Aidekon [3] developed a powerful method to obtain the convergence in law of its minimum after a log-factor normalization. By an adaptation of this method, we show that the point process formed by the branching random walk and its minimum converge in law to a Poisson point process colored by a certain point process. This result, confirming a conjecture of Brunet and Derrida [10], can be viewed as a discrete analog of the corresponding results for the branching brownian motion, previously established by Arguin et a…
In this paper we consider the natural random walk on a planar graph and scale it by a small positive number $δ$. Given a simply connected domain $D$ and its two boundary points $a$ and $b$, we start the scaled walk at a vertex of the graph nearby $a$ and condition it on its exiting $D$ through a vertex nearby $b$, and prove that the loop erasure of the conditioned walk converges, as $δ\downarrow 0$, to the chordal SLE$_{2}$ that connects $a$ and $b$ in $D$, provided that an invariance principle is valid for both the random walk and the dual walk of it.
We establish conditions on sequences of graphs which ensure that the mixing times of the random walks on the graphs in the sequence converge. The main assumption is that the graphs, associated measures and heat kernels converge in a suitable Gromov-Hausdorff sense. With this result we are able to establish the convergence of the mixing times on the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph in the critical window, sharpening previous results for this random graph model. Our results also enable us to establish convergence in a number of other examples, such as finitely ramified fractal g…
We consider the random walk loop soup on the discrete half-plane corresponding to a central charge c in (0, 1]. We look at the clusters of discrete loops and show that the scaling limit of the outer boundaries of outermost clusters is the CLE(kappa) loop ensemble, with the same relation between kappa and c as in the continuum Brownian setting.
We are interested in the biased random walk on a supercritical Galton--Watson tree in the sense of Lyons, Pemantle and Peres, and study a phenomenon of slow movement. In order to observe such a slow movement, the bias needs to be random; the resulting random walk is then a tree-valued random walk in random environment. We investigate the recurrent case, and prove, under suitable general integrability assumptions, that upon the system's non-extinction, the maximal displacement of the walk in the first n steps, divided by (log n)^3, converges almost surely to a known positive constant.
Symmetric heavily tailed random walks on $Z^d, d\geq 1,$ are considered. Under appropriate regularity conditions on the tails of the jump distributions, global (i.e., uniform in $x,t, |x|+t\to\infty,$) asymptotic behavior of the transition probability $p(t,0,x)$ is obtained. The examples indicate that the regularity conditions are essential.
We establish a second-order almost sure limit theorem for the minimal position in a one-dimensional super-critical branching random walk, and also prove a martingale convergence theorem which answers a question of Biggins and Kyprianou [9]. Our method applies furthermore to the study of directed polymers on a disordered tree. In particular, we give a rigorous proof of a phase transition phenomenon for the partition function (from the point of view of convergence in probability), already described by Derrida and Spohn [17]. Surprisingly, this phase transition phenomenon disappears in the sense …
We study the problem of convergence to the boundary in the setting of random walks on discrete quantum groups. Convergence to the boundary is established for random walks on $\hat{\textrm{SU}_q(2)}$. Furthermore, we will define the Martin boundary for random walks on C$^*$-tensor categories and give a formulation for convergence to the boundary for such random walks. These categorical definitions are shown to be compatible with the definitions in the quantum group case. This implies that convergence to the boundary for random walks on quantum groups is stable under monoidal equivalence.
In this paper we study convergence of random walks, on finite quantum groups, arising from linear combination of irreducible characters. We bound the distance to the Haar state and determine the asymptotic behavior, i.e. the limit state if it exists. We note that the possible limits are any central idempotent state. We also look at cut-off phenomenon in the Sekine finite quantum groups.
We outline a strategy for showing convergence of loop-erased random walk on the Z^2 square lattice to SLE(2), in the supremum norm topology that takes the time parametrization of the curves into account. The discrete curves are parametrized so that the walker moves at a constant speed determined by the lattice spacing, and the SLE(2) curve has the recently introduced natural time parametrization. Our strategy can be seen as an extension of the one used by Lawler, Schramm, and Werner to prove convergence modulo time parametrization. The crucial extra step is showing that the expected occupation…
Some asymptotic properties of a Brownian motion in multifractal time, also called multifractal random walk, are established. We show the almost sure and $L^1$ convergence of its structure function. This is an issue directly connected to the scale invariance and multifractal property of the sample paths. We place ourselves in a mixed asymptotic setting where both the observation length and the sampling frequency may go together to infinity at different rates. The results we obtain are similar to the ones that were given by Ossiander and Waymire and Bacry \emph{et al.} in the simpler framework o…
Let (Y, Z) denote the solution to a forward-backward SDE. If one constructs a random walk B n from the underlying Brownian motion B by Skorohod embedding, one can show L 2 convergence of the corresponding solutions (Y n , Z n) to (Y, Z). We estimate the rate of convergence in dependence of smoothness properties, especially for a terminal condition function in C 2,$α$. The proof relies on an approximative representation of Z n and uses the concept of discretized Malliavin calculus. Moreover, we use growth and smoothness properties of the PDE associated to the FBSDE as well as of the finite diff…
In this paper we present a weak approximation scheme for BSDEs driven by a Wiener process and an (in)finite activity Poisson random measure with drivers that are general Lipschitz functionals of the solution of the BSDE. The approximating backward stochastic difference equations (BSΔEs) are driven by random walks that weakly approximate the given Wiener process and Poisson random measure. We establish the weak convergence to the solution of the BSDE and the numerical stability of the sequence of solutions of the BSΔEs. By way of illustration we analyse explicitly a scheme with discrete step-si…
In this paper we consider an irreducible random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}$ that is in the domain of normal attraction of a strictly stable process with index $α\in (1, 2)$ and obtain the asymptotic form of the distribution of the hitting time of the origin and that of the transition probability for the walk killed when it hits a finite set. The asymptotic forms obtained are valid uniformly in the natural domain of the space and time variables.
The Brownian Web (BW) is a family of coalescing Brownian motions starting from every point in space and time $\R\times\R$. It was first introduced by Arratia, and later analyzed in detail by Tóth and Werner. More recently, Fontes, Isopi, Newman and Ravishankar gave a characterization of the BW, and general convergence criteria allowing either crossing or noncrossing paths, which they verified for coalescing simple random walks. Later Ferrari, Fontes, and Wu verified these criteria for a two dimensional Poisson Tree. In both cases, the paths are noncrossing. In this thesis, we formulate new con…
Consider the boundary case in a one-dimensional super-critical branching random walk. It is known that upon the survival of the system, the minimal position after $n$ steps behaves in probability like ${3\over 2} \log n$ when $n\to \infty$. We give a simple and self-contained proof of this result, based exclusively on elementary properties of sums of i.i.d. real-valued random variables.
We prove invariance principles for a mulditimensional random walk conditioned to stay in a cone. Our first result concerns convergence towards the Brownian meander in the cone. Furthermore, we prove functional convergence of $h$-transformed random walk to the corresponding $h$-transform of the Brownian motion. Finally, we prove an invariance principle for bridges of a random walk in a cone.
A functional approach for the study of the random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) is proposed. Under fairly general assumptions on the random walk and on the random scenery, functional limit theorems are proved. The method allows to study separately the convergence of the walk and of the scenery: on the one hand, a general criterion for the convergence of the local time of the walk is provided, on the other hand, the convergence of the random measures associated with the scenery is studied. This functional approach is robust enough to recover many of the known results on RWRS as well as new o…
Consider a supercritical branching random walk on the real line. The consistent maximal displacement is the smallest of the distances between the trajectories followed by individuals at the $n$th generation and the boundary of the process. Fang and Zeitouni, and Faraud, Hu and Shi proved that under some integrability conditions, the consistent maximal displacement grows almost surely at rate $λ^* n^{1/3}$ for some explicit constant $λ^*$. We obtain here a necessary and sufficient condition for this asymptotic behaviour to hold.
We study an homogeneous irreducible markovian random walk in a square lattice of arbitrary dimension, with an antisymmetric perturbation acting only in one point. We compute exactly spatial correction to the diffusive behaviour in the asympotics of probability, in the spirit of local limit theorems for random walks.
Let $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ be a Markov chain on a measurable space $\X$ with transition kernel $P$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. The Markov kernel $P$ is here considered as a linear bounded operator on the weighted-supremum space $\cB_V$ associated with $V$. Then the combination of quasi-compactness arguments with precise analysis of eigen-elements of $P$ allows us to estimate the geometric rate of convergence $ρ_V(P)$ of $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ to its invariant probability measure in operator norm on $\cB_V$. A general procedure to compute $ρ_V(P)$ for discrete Markov random walks with identically dist…
