We study asymptotics of reducible representations of the symmetric groups S_q for large q. We decompose such a representation as a sum of irreducible components (or, alternatively, Young diagrams) and we ask what is the character of a randomly chosen component (or, what is the shape of a randomly chosen Young diagram). Our main result is that for a large class of representations the fluctuations of characters (and fluctuations of the shape of the Young diagrams) are asymptotically Gaussian; in this way we generalize Kerov's central limit theorem. The considered class consists of representations for which the characters almost factorize and this class includes, for example, left-regular representation (Plancherel measure), tensor representations. This class is also closed under induction, restriction, outer product and tensor product of representations. Our main tool in the proof is the method of genus expansion, well known from the random matrix theory.
We study the class of Uglov bipartitions and prove a generalization of a conjecture by Dipper, James and Murphy. We give two consequences concerning the computation of canonical bases in affine type A and the description of decomposition matrices for Hecke algebras of type Bn in arbitrary characteristic.
We introduce a large class of random Young diagrams which can be regarded as a natural one-parameter deformation of some classical Young diagram ensembles; a deformation which is related to Jack polynomials and Jack characters. We show that each such a random Young diagram converges asymptotically to some limit shape and that the fluctuations around the limit are asymptotically Gaussian.
We study asymptotics of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to a balanced Young diagram λ(a Young diagram with at most C\sqrt{n} rows and columns for some fixed constant C) in the limit as n tends to infinity. We show that there exists a constant D (which depends only on C) with a property that |χ^λ(π)| = | Tr ρ^λ(π)/Tr ρ^λ(e) | < [ D max(1,|π|^2/n) / \sqrt{n}} ]^{|π|}, where |π| denotes the length of a permutation (the minimal number of factors necessary to write πas a product of transpositions). Our main tool is an analogue of Frobenius character formula wh…
Classical Schur P-functions are the particular case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials when the parameter is equal to -1. We introduce factorial (interpolation) analogues of Schur P-functions. A dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram is the number of standard tableaux of the given shape. Also these numbers are equal up to simple factors to the decomposition coefficients of the restriction of an irreducible representation of a spin-symmetric group to a smaller spin-symmetric group. In terms of the factorial Schur P-functions we obtain an explicit formula for the dimension of a skew shifted Young…
We give a new simple description of the canonical bijection between the set of triangulations of n-gon and some set of Young diagrams. Using this description, we find flip transformations on this set of Young diagrams which correspond to the edges of the associahedron. This construction is generalized on the set of all Young diagrams and the corresponding infinite-dimensional associahedron is defined. We consider its relation to the properly defined infinite-type version of the cluster algebras of type A and check some properties of these algebras inherited from their finite-type counterparts.…
We give a new simple characterization of the set of Kleshchev multipartitions, and more generally of the set of Uglov multipartitions. These combinatorial objects play an important role in various areas of representation theory of quantum groups, Hecke algebras or finite reductive groups. As a consequence, we obtain a proof of a generalization of a conjecture by Dipper, James and Murphy and a generalization of the LLT algorithm for arbitrary level.
We study the class of functions on the set of (generalized) Young diagrams arising as the number of embeddings of bipartite graphs. We give a criterion for checking when such a function is a polynomial function on Young diagrams (in the sense of Kerov and Olshanski) in terms of combinatorial properties of the corresponding bipartite graphs. Our method involves development of a differential calculus of functions on the set of generalized Young diagrams.
We construct a hook-content formula and its $q$-analog using excited Young diagrams analogous to Naruse's hook-length formula for skew shapes. Furthermore, we show that our hook-content formula has a simple factorization and give some conjectures and questions related to its $q$-analog.
In this paper, we study shifted Schur functions $S_μ^\star$, as well as a new family of shifted symmetric functions $\mathfrak{K}_μ$ linked to Kostka numbers. We prove that both are polynomials in multi-rectangular coordinates, with nonnegative coefficients when written in terms of falling factorials. We then propose a conjectural generalization to the Jack setting. This conjecture is a lifting of Knop and Sahi's positivity result for usual Jack polynomials and resembles recent conjectures of Lassalle. We prove our conjecture for one-part partitions.
We give a combinatorial formula for LLT cumulants of unicellular unilevelled shapes in terms of parking functions and Cayley trees. Our formula implies previously conjectured Schur positivity.
The Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$ has a distinguished family of irreducible finite-dimensional representations, called elementary representations. They are parametrized by pairs, consisting of a skew Young diagram and a complex number. Each of these representations has an explicit realization, it extends the classical realization of the irreducible polynomial representations of $gl_N$ by means of the Young symmetrizers. We explicitly construct analogues of these elementary representations for the twisted Yangian, which corresponds to the Lie algebra $so_N$. Our construction provides soluti…
The pattern-avoiding fillings of Young diagrams we study arose from Postnikov's work on positive Grassman cells. They are called Le-diagrams, and are in bijection with decorated permutations. Other closely-related diagrams are interpreted as acyclic orientations of some bipartite graphs. The definition of the diagrams is the same but the avoided patterns are different. We give here bijections proving that the number of pattern-avoiding filling of a Young diagram is the same, for these two different sets of patterns. The result was obtained by Postnikov via a reccurence relation. This relation …
We consider the decomposition into irreducible components of the external power $Λ^p(\mathbb{C}^m\otimes \mathbb{C}^n)$ regarded as a $\operatorname{GL}_m\times\operatorname{GL}_n$-module. Skew Howe duality implies that the Young diagrams from each pair $(λ,μ)$ which contributes to this decomposition turn out to be conjugate to each other, i.e.~$μ=λ'$. We show that the Young diagram $λ$ which corresponds to a randomly selected irreducible component $(λ,λ')$ has the same distribution as the Young diagram which consists of the boxes with entries $\leq p$ of a random Young tableau of rectangular …
The crystal bases are quite useful combinatorial tools to study the representations of quantized universal enveloping algebras $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$. The polyhedral realization for $B(\infty)$ is a combinatorial description of the crystal base, which is defined as an image of embedding $Ψ_ι:B(\infty)\hookrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^{\infty}_ι$, where $ι$ is an infinite sequence of indices and $\mathbb{Z}^{\infty}_ι$ is an infinite $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with a crystal structure associated with $ι$. It is a natural problem to find an explicit form of the polyhedral realization ${\rm Im}(Ψ_ι)$. In this ar…
We exhibit the limit shape of random Young diagrams having a distribution proportional to the exponential of their area, and confined in a rectangular box. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck bridge arises from the fluctuations around the limit shape.
We determine the most general form of a smooth function on Young diagrams, that is, a polynomial in the interlacing or multirectangular coordinates whose value depends only on the shape of the diagram. We prove that the algebra of such functions is isomorphic to quasi-symmetric functions, and give a noncommutative analog of this result.
We study the tensor product $W$ of any number of "elementary" irreducible modules $V_1,...,V_k$ over the Yangian of the general linear Lie algebra. Each of these modules is determined by a skew Young diagram and a complex parameter. For any indices $i,j=1,...,k$ there is a canonical non-zero intertwining operator $A_{ij}$ between the tensor products $V_i\otimes V_j$ and $V_j\otimes V_i$. This operator is defined up to a scalar multipler. We show that the tensor product $W$ is irreducible, if and only if all operators $A_{ij}$ with $i<j$ are invertible. This implies that the Yangian module $W$ …
In this paper, we present the results of a computer investigation of asymptotics for maximum dimensions of linear and projective representations of the symmetric group. This problem reduces to the investigation of standard and strict Young diagrams of maximum dimensions. We constructed some sequences for both standard and strict Young diagrams with extremely large dimensions. The conjecture that the limit of normalized dimensions exists was proposed 30 years ago [A.~M.~Vershik and S.~V.~Kerov, 1985] and has not been proved yet. We studied the growth and oscillations of the normalized dimension…
Consider random Young diagrams with a fixed number n of boxes, where the probability distribution on diagrams is determined by the Plancherel measure. That is, the weight of a diagram is proportional to the squared dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n. As n goes to infinity, the boundary of the (suitably scaled) random diagram concentrates near a curve Omega (Logan-Shepp 1977, Vershik-Kerov 1977). In 1993, Kerov announced a central limit theorem describing Gaussian fluctuations of random diagrams around the limit shape Omega. Here we propose a re…
We consider $β$--Plancherel measures \cite{Ba.Ra.} on subsets of partitions -- and their asymptotics. These subsets are the Young diagrams contained in a $(k,\ell)$--hook, and we calculate the asymptotics of the expected shape of these diagrams, relative to such measures. We also calculate the asymptotics of the distribution function of the lengths of the rows and the columns for these diagrams. This might be considered as the restriction to the $(k,\ell)$--hook of the fundamental work of Baik, Deift and Johansson \cite{B.D.J.1}. The above asymptotics are given here by ratios of certain Selber…
We introduce a new impartial game, named Multiple Hook Removing Game (MHRG for short). We also determine the $\mathcal{G}$-values of some game positions (including the starting positions) in MHRG$(m,n)$, the MHRG whose starting position is the rectangular Young diagram of size $m\times n$ with the unimodal numbering. In addition, we prove that MHRG$(m,n)$ is isomorphic, as games, to MHRG$(m,n+1)$ (if $m\le n$ and $m+n$ is even), and give a relationship between MHRG$(n,n+1)$ (and MHRG$(n,n)$) and HRG$(S_n)$, the Hook Removing Game in terms of shifted Young diagrams.
We consider the problem of finding the number of matrices over a finite field with a certain rank and with support that avoids a subset of the entries. These matrices are a q-analogue of permutations with restricted positions (i.e., rook placements). For general sets of entries these numbers of matrices are not polynomials in q (Stembridge 98); however, when the set of entries is a Young diagram, the numbers, up to a power of q-1, are polynomials with nonnegative coefficients (Haglund 98). In this paper, we give a number of conditions under which these numbers are polynomials in q, or even pol…
A recent breakthrough in the theory of (type A) Macdonald polynomials is due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, who exhibited a combinatorial formula for these polynomials in terms of a pair of statistics on fillings of Young diagrams. The inversion statistic, which is the more intricate one, suffices for specializing a closely related formula to one for the type A Hall-Littlewood Q-polynomials (spherical functions on p-adic groups). An apparently unrelated development, at the level of arbitrary finite root systems, led to Schwer's formula (rephrased and rederived by Ram) for the Hall-Littlewood P-…
We study the Young graph with edge multiplicities arising in a Pieri-type formula for Jack symmetric polynomials $P_μ(x;a)$ with a parameter $a$. Starting with the empty diagram, we define recurrently the `dimensions' $\dim_a$ in the same way as for the Young lattice or Pascal triangle. New proofs are given for two known results. The first is the $a$-hook formula for $\dim_a$, first found by R.Stanley. Secondly, we prove (for all complex $u$ and $v$) a generalization of the identity $\sumν(c(b)+u)(c(b)+v)\dimν/\dimμ=(n+1)(n+uv)$, where $ν$ runs over immediate successors of a Young diagram $μ$ …
We consider the problem of finding a Young diagram minimizing the sum of evaluations of a given pair of functions on the parts of the associated pair of conjugate partitions. While there are exponentially many diagrams, we show it is polynomial time solvable.
This paper studies Young diagrams of symmetric and pseudo-symmetric numerical semigroups and describes new operations on Young diagrams as well as numerical semigroups. These provide new decompositions of symmetric and pseudo-symmetric semigroups into an over semigroup and its dual. It is also given exactly for what kind of numerical semigroup $S$, the semigroup ring $\Bbbk[\![S]\!]$ has at least one Gorenstein subring and has at least one Kunz subring.
In this note we give a new proof of a closed formula for the multivariable generating series of diagonally colored Young diagrams. This series also describes the Euler characteristics of certain Nakajima quiver varieties. Our proof is a direct combinatorial argument, based on Andrews' work on generalized Frobenius partitions. We also obtain representations of these series in some particular cases as infinite products.
For a finite poset $P=(X,\prec)$, let $\mathcal{L}_P$ denote the set of linear extensions of $P$. The sorting probability $δ(P)$ is defined as \[δ(P) \, := \, \min_{x,y\in X} \, \bigl| \mathbf{P} \, [L(x)\leq L(y) ] \ - \ \mathbf{P} \, [L(y)\leq L(x) ] \bigr|\,, \] where $L \in \mathcal{L}_P$ is a uniform linear extension of $P$. We give asymptotic upper bounds on sorting probabilities for posets associated with large Young diagrams and large skew Young diagrams, with bounded number of rows.
We prove that in every cover of a Young diagram with $\binom{2k}{k}$ steps with generalized rectangles there is a row or a column in the diagram that is used by at least $k+1$ rectangles. We show that this is best-possible by partitioning any Young diagram with $\binom{2k}{k}-1$ steps into actual rectangles, each row and each column used by at most $k$ rectangles. This answers two questions by Kim et al. (2018). Our results can be rephrased in terms of local covering numbers of difference graphs with complete bipartite graphs, which has applications in the recent notion of local dimension of p…
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
We study root-theoretic Young diagrams to investigate the existence of a Lie-type uniform and nonnegative combinatorial rule for Schubert calculus. We provide formulas for (co)adjoint varieties of classical Lie type. This is a simplest case after the (co)minuscule family (where a rule has been proved by H.Thomas and the second author using work of R.Proctor). Our results build on earlier Pieri-type rules of P.Pragacz-J.Ratajski and of A.Buch-A.Kresch-H.Tamvakis. Specifically, our formula for OG(2,2n) is the first complete rule for a case where diagrams are non-planar. Yet the formulas possess …
We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of isotropic Grassmannians by using a localization map to the torus fixed points. We present two types of formulas for equivariant Schubert classes of these homogeneous spaces. The first formula involves combinatorial objects which we call ``excited Young diagrams'' and the second one is written in terms of factorial Schur $Q$- or $P$-functions. As an application, we give a Giambelli-type formula for the equivariant Schubert classes. We also give combinatorial and Pfaffian formulas for the multiplicity of a singular point in a Schubert variety.
Introduced by Ardila (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003), the Catalan matroid is obtained by defining the bases of the matroid using Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$. Further research has gone into the topic, with variants like lattice path matroids (introduced by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003)) and shifted matroids (introduced independently by Klivans (2003), and Ardila) being studied intensively. In this short note, we introduce the Young matroid, an extension of the Catalan matroid, where the bases are defined using the standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape. This…
We continue the study of root-theoretic Young diagrams (RYDs) from [Searles-Yong '13]. We provide an RYD formula for the $GL_n$ Belkale-Kumar product, after [Knutson-Purbhoo '11], and we give a translation of the indexing set of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09] for Schubert varieties of non-maximal isotropic Grassmannians into RYDs. We then use this translation to prove that the RYD formulas of [Searles-Yong '13] for Schubert calculus of the classical (co)adjoint varieties agree with the Pieri rules of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09], which were needed in the proofs of the (co)adjoint formulas.
In continuation of our recent work arXiv:2006.07312, we classify the extremal traces on infinite diagram algebras that appear in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for Banica and Speicher's easy groups. We show that the branching graphs of these algebras describe walks on new variations of the Young graph which describe curious ways of growing Young diagrams. As a consequence, we prove that the extremal traces on generic rook-Brauer algebras are always extensions of extremal traces on the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[S_{\infty}]$ of the infinite symmetric group. Moreover, we conjecture that the sa…
Simultaneous bar-cores, core shifted Young diagrams (or CSYDs), and doubled distinct cores have been studied since Morris and Yaseen introduced the concept of bar-cores. In this paper, our goal is to give a formula for the number of these core partitions on $(s,t)$-cores and $(s,s+d,s+2d)$-cores for the remaining cases that are not covered yet. In order to achieve this goal, we observe a characterization of $\bar{s}$-core partitions to obtain characterizations of doubled distinct $s$-core partitions and $s$-CSYDs. By using them, we construct $NE$ lattice path interpretations of these core part…
We compute the limit shapes of the Young diagrams of the minimal difference $p$ partitions and provide a simple physical interpretation for the limit shapes. We also calculate the asymptotic distribution of the largest part of the Young diagram and show that the scaled distribution has a Gumbel form for all $p$. This Gumbel statistics for the largest part remains unchanged even for general partitions of the form $E=\sum_i n_i i^{1/ν}$ with $ν>0$ where $n_i$ is the number of times the part $i$ appears.
We study intersection numbers of invariant divisors in the toric manifold associated with the fan determined by the collection of Weyl chambers for each root system of classical type and of exceptional type $G_2$. We give a combinatorial formula for intersection numbers of certain subvarieties which are naturally indexed by elements of the Weyl group. These numbers describe the ring structure of the cohomology of the toric manifold.
There exists a well-known hook-length formula for calculating the dimensions of 2D Young diagrams. Unfortunately, the analogous formula for 3D case is unknown. We introduce an approach for calculating the estimations of dimensions of three-dimensional Young diagrams also known as plane partitions. The most difficult part of this task is the calculation of co-transition probabilities for a central Markov process. We propose an algorithm for approximate calculation of these probabilities. It generates numerous random paths to a given diagram. In case the generated paths are uniformly distributed…
Let $p(n)$ be the number of all integer partitions of the positive integer $n$ and let $λ$ be a partition, selected uniformly at random from among all such $p(n)$ partitions. It is known that each partition $λ$ has a unique graphical representation, composed by $n$ non-overlapping cells in the plane called Young diagram. As a second step of our sampling experiment, we select a cell $c$ uniformly at random from among all $n$ cells of the Young diagram of the partition $λ$. For large $n$, we study the asymptotic behavior of the hook length $Z_n=Z_n(λ,c)$ of the cell $c$ of a random partituion $λ…
We consider two natural statistics on pairs of histograms, in which the $n$ bins have weights $0, \ldots, n-1$. The difference ($\mathbf{D}$) between the weighted totals of the histograms is, in a sense, refined by the earth mover's distance ($\mathbf{EMD}$), which measures the amount of work required to equalize the histograms. We were recently surprised, however, by how little $\mathbf{EMD}$ actually does refine $\mathbf{D}$ in certain real-world applications, which led to the main problem in this paper: what is the probability that $\mathbf{EMD} = |\mathbf{D}|$? We derive a formula for this…
We investigate pattern avoidance in alternating permutations and generalizations thereof. First, we study pattern avoidance in an alternating analogue of Young diagrams. In particular, we extend Babson-West's notion of shape-Wilf equivalence to apply to alternating permutations and so generalize results of Backelin-West-Xin and Ouchterlony to alternating permutations. Second, we study pattern avoidance in the more general context of permutations with restricted ascents and descents. We consider a question of Lewis regarding permutations that are the reading words of thickened staircase Young t…
We establish a correspondence between Young diagrams and differential operators of infinitely many variables. These operators form a commutative associative algebra isomorphic to the algebra of the conjugated classes of finite permutations of the set of natural numbers. The Schur functions form a complete system of common eigenfunctions of these differential operators, and their eigenvalues are expressed through the characters of symmetric groups. The structure constants of the algebra are expressed through the Hurwitz numbers.
Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams. Résumé. Les cumulants libres sont des fo…
