We prove the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions on a reductive symmetric space. Our starting point is an inversion formula for spherical smooth compactly supported functions. The latter formula was earlier obtained from the most continuous part of the Plancherel formula by means of a residue calculus. In the course of the present paper we also obtain new proofs of the uniform tempered estimates for normalized Eisenstein integrals and of the Maass-Selberg relations satisfied by the associated C-functions.
We obtain the Plancherel decomposition for a reductive symmetric space in the sense of representation theory. Our starting point is the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions, obtained in part I (math.RT/0107063). The formula for Schwartz functions involves Eisenstein integrals obtained by a residual calculus. In the present paper we identify these integrals as matrix coefficients of the generalized principal series.
Yiannis Sakellaridis and Akshay Venkathesh have determined, when the group $G$ is split and the field $\F$ is of characteristic zero, the Plancherel formula for any spherical space $X$ for $G$ modulo the knowledge of the discrete spectrum. The starting point is the determination of good neighborhoods at infinity of $X/J$, where $J$ is a small compact open subgroup of $G$. These neighborhoods are related to "boundary degenerations" of $X$. The proof of their existence is made by using wonderful compactifications. In this article we will show the existence of such neighborhoods assuming that $\F…
In this paper we study the Plancherel formula for a new class of homogeneous spaces for real reductive Lie groups; these spaces are fibered over non-Riemannian symmetric spaces, and they exhibit a phenomenon of uniform infinite multiplicities. They also provide examples of non-tempered representations of the group appearing in the Plancherel formula. Several classes of examples are given.
We prove the Plancherel formula for Whittaker functions on a reductive p-adic group. This a sequel to our work on Paley-Wiener theorem. Our proof is close to the proof written by Waldspurger of the Harish-Chandra Plancherel formula for smooth functions on the group and use many of his results. One simplification is the easy proof of the Fourier transfom, which follows from a result of Joseph Bernstein.
The aim of this article is to present a simple generalized Plancherel formula for a locally compact unimodular topological group G of type I. This formula specializes to the Whittaker-Plancherel formula for a split reductive p-adic group of Sakellaridis-Venkatesh and differs from that of a quasi-split p-adic group due to Delorme. Furthermore, it also applies to certain metaplectic groups and other interesting situations where the local theory of distinguished representations has been studied.
Given a number field $F$ and a reductive group $G$ over $F$, the unitary dual $\hat{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ of the adelic group $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ and the Placherel measure $ν_{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ on it can be determined by the Plancherel measure of its local groups $G(F_v)$. Given a subset $X\subset \hat{G(\mathbb{A}_F)}$ of finite Plancherel measure, let $H_X$ be the direct integral of the irreducible representations in $X$. Besides a $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$-module and a $G(F)$-module, $H_X$ is also a module over the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G(F))$, hence there is a canonical dimension $\dim_…
In this article we give a precise description of the Plancherel decomposition of the most continuous part of $L^{2}(Z)$ for a real spherical homogeneous space $Z$. Our starting point is the recent construction of Bernstein morphisms by Delorme, Knop, Krötz and Schlichtkrull. The most continuous part decomposes into a direct integral of unitary principal series representations. We give an explicit construction of the $H$-invariant functionals on these principal series. We show that for generic induction data the multiplicity space equals the full space of $H$-invariant functionals. Finally, we …
The asymptotic behavior of holomorphic families of generalized eigenfunctions on a reductive symmetric space is studied. The family parameter is a complex character on the split component of a parabolic subgroup. The main result asserts that the family vanishes if a particular asymptotic coefficient does. This allows an induction of relations between families that will be applied in forthcoming work on the Plancherel and the Paley-Wiener theorem.
Given a unimodular real spherical space $Z=G/H$ we construct for each boundary degeneration $Z_I=G/H_I$ of $Z$ a Bernstein morphism $B_I: L^2(Z_I)_{\rm disc }\to L^2(Z)$. We show that $B:=\bigoplus_I B_I$ provides an isospectral $G$-equivariant morphism onto $L^2(Z)$. Further, the maps $B_I$ are finite linear combinations of orthogonal projections which translates in the known cases where $Z$ is a group or a symmetric space into the familiar Maass-Selberg relations. As a corollary we obtain that $L^2(Z)_{\rm disc }\neq \emptyset$ provided that ${\mathfrak h}^\perp$ contains elliptic elements i…
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field of characteristic 0, and let $M$ be an $F$-Levi subgroup of a connected reductive $F$-split group such that $Π_{i=1}^{r} SL_{n_i} \subseteq M \subseteq Π_{i=1}^{r} GL_{n_i}$ for positive integers $r$ and $n_i$. We prove that the Plancherel measure for any unitary supercuspidal representation of $M(F)$ is identically transferred under \textit{the local Jacquet-Langlands type correspondence} between $M$ and its $F$-inner forms, assuming a working hypothesis that Plancherel measures are invariant on a certain set. This work extends the result of Mui{ć} and Savin (2000)…
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space of split rank $1$ and let $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. In a previous article the first two authors introduced a notion of cusp forms for $G/H$. We show that the space of cusp forms coincides with the closure of the $K$-finite generalized matrix coefficients of discrete series representations if and only if there exist no $K$-spherical discrete series representations. Moreover, we prove that every $K$-spherical discrete series representation occurs with multiplicity $1$ in the Plancherel decomposition of $G/H$.
Plancherel formula is one of the celebrated result of harmonic analysis on semisimple Lie groups and their homogeneous spaces. The main goal of this work is to find a q-analog of the Plancherel formula for spherical transform the unit matrix ball. Here we present an explicit formula for the radial part of the Plancherel measure. q-Jacobi polynomials as spherical functions naturally arise on the way.
There are several global functionals on irreducible automorphic representations which are Eulerian, that is: pure tensors of local functionals, when the representation is written as an Euler product $π= \otimes'_v π_v$ of local representations. The precise factorization of such functionals is of interest to number theorists and is -- naturally -- very often related to special values of $L$-functions. The purpose of this paper is to develop in full generality the Plancherel formula for the Weil or oscillator representation, considered as a unitary representation of a reductive dual pair, and to…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the traces of Hecke operators for spherical discrete automorphic representations of fixed level on general split reductive groups over $\mathbb{Q}$. Under a condition on the analytic behavior of intertwining operators, which is known for the classical groups and the exceptional group $G_2$, we obtain the expected asymptotics in terms of the spherical Plancherel measure and an explicit estimate for the remainder.
Let Z be a homogeneous space Z=G/H of a real reductive Lie group G with a reductive subgroup H. The investigation concerns the quantitative decay of matrix coefficients on $Z$ under the assumption that Z is of spherical type, that is, minimal parabolic subgroups have open orbits on Z.
For infinite reductive groups with Frobenius maps, we show that certain subquotients of abstract representations of the groups induced from 1-dimensional representations of Borel subgroups are irreducible.
A Cartan decomposition for symmetric pairs plays an important role to study not only orbit geometry of the symmetric spaces but also harmonic analysis on them. For non-symmetric reductive pairs, there are examples of generalizations of Cartan decompositions for some spherical complex homogeneous spaces such as complex line bundles over the complexified Hermitian symmetric spaces and triple spaces. This paper provides new examples of a Cartan decomposition for non-symmetric reductive pairs, namely, reductive non-symmetric spherical pairs of rank-one type. We also show that the action of some co…
This paper gives a classification of all pairs $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak h)$ with $\mathfrak g$ a simple real Lie algebra and $\mathfrak h < \mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra for which there exists a minimal parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak p < \mathfrak g$ such that $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak h + \mathfrak p$ as vector sum.
If ${\mathfrak g}$ is a real reductive Lie algebra and ${\mathfrak h} < {\mathfrak g}$ is a subalgebra, then $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ is called real spherical provided that ${\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak h} + {\mathfrak p}$ for some choice of a minimal parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p} \subset {\mathfrak g}$. In this paper we classify all real spherical pairs $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ where ${\mathfrak g}$ is semi-simple but not simple and ${\mathfrak h}$ is a reductive real algebraic subalgebra. The paper is based on the classification of the case where ${\mathfrak g}$ is simple…
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group and let K be a reductive subgroup of G such that the coordinate ring of G/K is a multiplicity free G-module. We consider the G-algebra structure of C[G/K], and study the decomposition into irreducible summands of the product of irreducible G-submodules in C[G/K]. When the spherical roots of G/K generate a root system of type A we propose a conjectural decomposition rule, which relies on a conjecture of Stanley on the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions. With the exception of one case, we show that the rule holds true whenever the root system gen…
The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the …
The wavefront set is a fundamental invariant arising from the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion of an admissible representation. We prove a precise formula for the wavefront set of an irreducible Iwahori-spherical representation with `real infinitesimal character' and determine a lower bound for this invariant in terms of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig parameters. In particular, for the Iwahori-spherical representations with real infinitesimal character, we deduce that the algebraic wavefront set is a singleton, as conjectured by Moeglin and Waldspurger. As a corollary, we obtain an…
Given a spherical variety X for a group G over a non-archimedean local field k, the Plancherel decomposition for L^2(X) should be related to "distinguished" Arthur parameters into a dual group closely related to that defined by Gaitsgory and Nadler. Motivated by this, we develop, under some assumptions on the spherical variety, a Plancherel formula for L^2(X) up to discrete (modulo center) spectra of its "boundary degenerations", certain G-varieties with more symmetries which model X at infinity. Along the way, we discuss the asymptotic theory of subrepresentations of C^{infty}(X), and establi…
Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme of type $A$ acting on a spherical scheme $X$. We prove that there exists a number $C$ such that the multiplicity $\dim Hom(ρ,\mathbb{C}[X(F)])$ is bounded by $C$, for any finite field $F$ and any irreducible representation $ρ$ of $G(F)$. We give an explicit bound for $C$. We conjecture that this result is true for any reductive group scheme and when $F$ ranges (in addition) over all local fields of characteristic $0$.
Let $F(n)$ be a connected and simply connected free 2-step nilpotent lie group and $K$ be a compact subgroup of Aut($F(n)$). We say that $(K,F(n))$ is a Gelfand pair when the set of integrable $K$-invariant functions on $F(n)$ forms an abelian algebra under convolution. In this paper, we consider the case when $K=O(n)$. In this case, the Gelfand space $(O(n),F(n)$ is equipped with the Godement-Plancherel measure, and the spherical transform $\land:L_{O(n)}^{2}(F(n))\rightarrow L^{2}(Δ(O(n),F(n)))$ is an isometry. I will prove the Gelfand space $Δ(O(n),F(n))$ is equipped with the Godement-Planc…
This is a semi--expository update and rewrite of my 1974 AMS AMS Memoir describing Plancherel formulae and partial Dolbeault cohomology realizations for standard tempered representations for general real reductive Lie groups. Even after so many years, much of that Memoir is up to date, but of course there have been a number of refinements, advances and new developments, most of which have applied to smaller classes of real reductive Lie groups. Here we rewrite that AMS Memoir in in view of these advances and indicate the ties with some of the more recent (or at least less classical) approaches…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group scheme acting on a spherical scheme $X$. In the case where $G$ is of type $A_n$, Aizenbud and Avni proved the existence of a number $C$ such that the multiplicity $\dim\hom(ρ,\mathbb{C}[X(F)])$ is bounded by $C$, for any finite field $F$ and any irreducible representation $ρ$ of $G(F)$. In this paper, we generalize this result to the case where $G$ is a connected reductive group scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$, and prove Conjecture A of [1].
We classify the spherical birational sheets in a complex simple simply-connected algebraic group. We use the classification to show that, when $G$ is a connected reductive complex algebraic group with simply-connected derived subgroup, two conjugacy classes $\mathcal{O}_1$, $\mathcal{O}_2$ of $G$ lie in the same birational sheet, up to a shift by a central element of $G$, if and only if the coordinate rings of $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ are isomorphic as $G$-modules. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Losev for the spherical subvariety of the Lie algebra of $G$.
In this semi-expository paper we review the notion of a spherical space. In particular we present some recent results of Wedhorn on the classification of spherical spaces over arbitrary fields. As an application, we introduce and classify reductive monoid spaces over an arbitrary field.
This paper contains a non-trivial generalization of the Harish-Chandra transforms on a connected semisimple Lie group $G,$ with finite center, into what we term spherical convolutions. Among other results we show that its integral over the collection of bounded spherical functions at the identity element $e \in G$ is a weighted Fourier transforms of the Abel transform at $0.$ Being a function on $G,$ the restriction of this integral of its spherical Fourier transforms to the positive-definite spherical functions is then shown to be (the non-zero constant multiple of) a positive-definite distri…
In this paper, we give the expressions for the bounded spherical functions, or equivalently the spherical functions of positive type, for the free two-step nilpotent Lie groups endowed with the actions of orthogonal groups or their special subgroups. Next we deduce some results about the (Kohn) sub-Laplacian, and we compute the radial Plancherel measure.
Let G be a semisimple complex algebraic group, and H a wonderful subgroup of G. We prove several results relating the subgroup H to the properties of a combinatorial invariant S of G/H, called its spherical system. It is also possible to consider a spherical system S as a datum defined by purely combinatorial axioms, and under certain circumstances our results prove the existence of a wonderful subgroup H associated to S. As a byproduct, we reduce for any group G the proof of the classification of wonderful G-varieties, known as the Luna conjecture, to its verification on a small family of cas…
The aim of my PhD work is to study the $L^p$-boundedness of operators on two classes of two-step nilpotent Lie groups, using Plancherel formulas and spherical functions as tools. The first class of groups consists of the groups of Heisenberg type, and the second, of the two-step free nilpotent Lie groups (denoted $N_{v,2}$ for $v$ generators). In the latter case, we develop a radial Fourier calculus. Our study has focused on the maximal functions associated with Korányi spheres, together with their square functions, and the convolution operator defined with the radial Fourier calculus on the t…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a $p$-adic field $F$ of characteristic 0 and let $M$ be an $F$-Levi subgroup of $G.$ Given a discrete series representation $σ$ of $M(F),$ we prove that there exists a locally constant and compactly supported function on $M(F),$ which generalizes a pseudo-coefficient of $σ.$ This function satisfies similar properties to the pseudo-coefficient, and its lifting to $G(F)$ is applied to the Plancherel formula.
In this article, we investigate the geometry of reductive group actions on algebraic varieties. Given a connected reductive group $G$, we elaborate on a geometric and combinatorial approach based on Luna-Vust theory to describe every normal $G$-variety with spherical orbits. This description encompasses the classical case of spherical varieties and the theory of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties recently introduced by Altmann, Hausen, and Süss.
The wavefront set is a fundamental invariant of an admissible representation arising from the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion. In this paper, we give a precise formula for the wavefront set of an irreducible representation of real infinitesimal character in Lusztig's category of unipotent representations in terms of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig correspondence. Our formula generalizes the main result of arXiv:2112.14354, where this formula was obtained in the Iwahori-spherical case. We deduce that for any irreducible unipotent representation with real infinitesimal character, the…
We give an introduction to basic harmonic analysis and representation theory for homogeneous spaces $Z=G/H$ attached to a real reductive Lie group $G$. A special emphasis is made to the case where $Z$ is real spherical.
Let Z be an algebraic homogeneous space Z=G/H attached to real reductive Lie group G. We assume that Z is real spherical, i.e., minimal parabolic subgroups have open orbits on Z. For such spaces we investigate their large scale geometry and provide a polar decomposition. This is obtained from the existence of simple compactifications of Z which is established in this paper.
The classical Cartan-Helgason theorem characterises finite-dimensional spherical representations of reductive Lie groups in terms of their highest weights. We generalise the theorem to the case of a reductive symmetric supergroup pair $(G,K)$ of even type. Along the way, we compute the Harish-Chandra $c$-function of the symmetric superspace $G/K$. By way of an application, we show that all spherical representations are self-dual in type AIII|AIII.
Let $G$ be a real reductive algebraic group, and let $H\subset G$ be an algebraic subgroup. It is known that the action of $G$ on the space of functions on $G/H$ is "tame" if this space is spherical. In particular, the multiplicities of the space $\mathcal{S}(G/H)$ of Schwartz functions on $G/H$ are finite in this case. In this paper we formulate and analyze a generalization of sphericity that implies finite multiplicities in $\mathcal{S}(G/H)$ for small enough irreducible representations of $G$.
We prove vanishing of distributions on a split real reductive group which change according to a non-degenerate character under the left action of the unipotent radical of the Borel subgroup, and are equivariant under the right action of a spherical subgroup, and eigen with respect to the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of G. This is a generalization of a result by Shalika, that concerned the group case. Shalika's result was crucial in the proof of his multiplicity one theorem. We view our result as a step in the study of multiplicities of quasi-regular representat…
This paper studies spherical Whittaker functions for central extensions of reductive groups over local fields. We follow the development of Chinta and Offen to produce a metaplectic Casselman-Shalika formula for tame covers of all unramified groups.
