We use a construction which we call generalized cylinders to give a new proof of the fundamental theorem of hypersurface theory. It has the advantage of being very simple and the result directly extends to semi-Riemannian manifolds and to embeddings into spaces of constant curvature. We also give a new way to identify spinors for different metrics and to derive the variation formula for the Dirac operator. Moreover, we show that generalized Killing spinors for Codazzi tensors are restrictions of parallel spinors. Finally, we study the space of Lorentzian metrics and give a criterion when two Lorentzian metrics on a manifold can be joined in a natural manner by a 1-parameter family of such metrics.
What are appropriate geometric conditions ensuring that a complete Riemannian 2-cylinder without conjugate points is flat? Examples with nonpositive curvature show that one has to assume that the ends of the cylinder open sublinearly. We show that sublinear growth of the ends is indeed sufficient if it is measured by the length of horocycles. This is used to extend results by K. Burns and G. Knieper [9], and by H. Koehler [18], where the opening of the ends is measured in terms of shortest noncontractible loops.
For a Riemannian manifold $M$, possibly with boundary, we consider the Riemannian product $M\times\mathbb{R}^k$ with a smooth positive function that weights the Riemannian measures. In this work we characterize parabolic hypersurfaces with non-empty boundary and contained within certain regions of $M\times\mathbb{R}^k$ with suitable weights. Our results include half-space and Bernstein-type theorems in weighted cylinders. We also generalize to this setting some classical properties about the confinement of a compact minimal hypersurface to certain regions of Euclidean space according to the po…
We investigate minimal helix submanifolds of any dimension and codimension immersed in Euclidean space. Our main result proves that a ruled minimal helix submanifold is a cylinder. As an application we classify complex helix submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^n$: They are extrinsic products with a complex line as a factor. The key tool is Corollary 1.3 which allows us to classify Riemannian foliations of open subsets of the Euclidean space with minimal leaves. Finally, we consider the case of a helix hypersurface with constant mean curvature and prove that it is either a cylinder or an open part of a…
We give a full description of totally geodesic submanifolds in the tangent bundle of a Riemannian 2-manifold of constant curvature and present a new class of a cylinder-type totally geodesic submanifolds in the general case.
We classify the self-adjoint realisations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator minimally defined on an infinite cylinder equipped with an incomplete Riemannian metric of Grushin type, in the class of metrics yielding an infinite deficiency index. Such realisations are naturally interpreted as Hamiltonians governing the geometric confinement of a Schrödinger quantum particle away from the singularity, or the dynamical transmission across the singularity. In particular, we characterise all physically meaningful extensions qualified by explicit local boundary conditions at the singularity. Within our…
In this note, we give natural extensions to cylinders and tori of a classical result due to T. Takahashi about minimal immersions into spheres. More precisely, we deal with Euclidean isometric immersions whose projections in R^N satisfy a spectral condition of their Laplacian.
B. Csikós and M. Horváth proved that if a connected Riemannian manifold of dimension at least $4$ is harmonic, then the total scalar curvatures of tubes of small radius about a regular curve depend only on the length of the curve and the radius of the tube, and conversely, if the latter condition holds for cylinders, i.e., for tubes about geodesic segments, then the manifold is harmonic. In the present paper, we show that in contrast to the higher dimensional case, a connected 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold has the above mentioned property of tubes if and only if the manifold is a D'Atri sp…
In this paper we show explicit examples of several families of immersions with constant mean curvature and non constant principal curvatures, in semi-riemannian manifolds with constant sectional curvature. In particular, we prove that every h in [-1,-2 sqrt{n-1}/n) can be realized as the constant curvature of a complete immersion of S_1^{n-1} x R in the (n+1)-dimensional de Sitter space S_1^{n+1}. We provide 3 types of immersions with cmc in the Minkowski space, 5 types of immersion with cmc in the de Sitter space and 5 types of immersion with cmc in the anti de Sitter space. At the end of the…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with density $M$ without boundary and the real line $\mathbb{R}$ with constant density, we prove that isoperimetric regions of large volume in $M\times\mathbb{R}$ with the product density are slabs of the form $M\times [a,b]$. We previously prove, as a necessary step, the existence of isoperimetric regions in any manifold of density where a subgroup of the group of transformations preserving weighted perimeter and volume acts cocompactly.
In this survey article we review several results on the curvature of semi-Riemannian metrics which are motivated by the positive mass theorem. The main themes are estimates of the Riemann tensor of an asymptotically flat manifold and the construction of Lorentzian metrics which satisfy the dominant energy condition.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a semi-Riemannian manifold of arbitrary signature to be locally isometrically immersed into certain warped products. Then, we describe a way to use the structure equations of such immersions to construct foliations of marginally trapped surfaces in a four-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes. We point out that, sometimes, Gauss and Codazzi equations are not sufficient to ensure the existence of a local isometric immersion of a semi-Riemannian manifold as a hypersurface of another manifold. We finally give two low-dimensional examples to illustrate o…
On a Riemannian or a semi-Riemannian manifold, the metric determines invariants like the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemann curvature. If the metric becomes degenerate (as in singular semi-Riemannian geometry), these constructions no longer work, because they are based on the inverse of the metric, and on related operations like the contraction between covariant indices. In this article we develop the geometry of singular semi-Riemannian manifolds. First, we introduce an invariant and canonical contraction between covariant indices, applicable even for degenerate metrics. This contraction …
We revisit an example of a semi-Riemannian geodesic that was discussed by Musso, Pejsachowicz and Portaluri in 2007 to show that not every conjugate point is a bifurcation point. We point out a mistake in their argument, showing that on this geodesic actually every conjugate point is a bifurcation point. Finally, we provide an improved example which yields that the claim in our title is nevertheless true.
We give examples illustrating the fact that the different space/time splittings of the tangent bundle of a semi-Riemannian spin manifold give rise to non-equivalent norms on the space of compactly supported sections of the spinor bundle, and as a result, to different completions. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for two space/time splittings to define equivalent norms in terms of a generalized Doppler shift between maximal negative definite subspaces. We explore some consequences for the Noncommutative Geometry program.
We study a two dimensional analogue of the Roe-Higson index theorem for a partitioned manifold. We prove that Connes' pairing of some invertible element with Roe's cyclic one-cocycle coincides to the Fredholm index of a Toeplitz operator. In the proof of this paper, we use some properties of a circle and use Higson's argument. In the last section, there is a example of partitioned manifold, which is not a cylinder, with non-trivial pairing.
In this paper we provide a new method for establishing the rotational symmetry of the solutions to a couple of very classical overdetermined problems arising in potential theory, in both the exterior and the interior punctured domain. Thanks to a conformal reformulation of the problems, we obtain Riemannian manifolds with zero Weyl tensor satisfying a quasi-Einstein type equation. Exploiting these geometric properties, we conclude via a splitting argument that the manifolds obtained are half cylinders. In turn, the rotational symmetry of the potential is implied. To the authors' knowledge, som…
$(N(k),ξ)$-semi-Riemannian manifolds are defined. Examples and properties of $(N(k),ξ)$-semi-Riemannian manifolds are given. Some relations involving ${\cal T}_{a}$-curvature tensor in $(N(k),ξ)$-semi-Riemannian manifolds are proved. $ξ$-${\cal T}_{a}$-flat $(N(k),ξ)$-semi-Riemannian manifolds are defined. It is proved that if $M$ is an $n$-dimensional $ξ$-${\cal T}_{a}$-flat $(N(k),ξ)$-semi-Riemannian manifold, then it is $η$-Einstein under an algebraic condition. We prove that a semi-Riemannian manifold, which is $T$-recurrent or $T$-symmetric, is always $T$-semisymmetric, where $T$ is any t…
The authors first in this paper define a semi-symmetric metric non-holonomic connection (called in briefly a semi-sub-Riemannian connection) on sub-Riemannian manifolds, and study the relations between sub-Riemannian connections and semi-sub-Riemannian connections. An invariant under a connection transformation $\nabla\rightarrow D$ is obtained. The authors then further deduce a sufficient and necessary condition that a sub-Riemannian manifold associated with a semi-sub-Riemannian connection is flat, and derive that a sub-Riemannian manifold with vanishing curvature with respect to semi-sub-Ri…
The subject of this PhD thesis is noncommutative geometry - more specifically spectral triples - and how it can be generalized to semi-Riemannian manifolds generally, and Lorentzian manifolds in particular. The first half of this thesis will thus be dedicated to the transition from Riemannian to semi-Riemannian manifolds. This entails a study of Clifford algebras for indefinite vector spaces and Spin structures on semi-Riemannian manifolds. An important consequence of this is the introduction of Krein spaces, which will enable us to generalize spectral triples to indefinite spectral triples. I…

In this paper, we define and study CR-lightlike submanifolds of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold. We investigate some properties of geodesic CR-submanifolds of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold. Moreover, we obtain many interesting results for totally geodesic and totally umbilical CR-submanifolds on a golden Riemannian manifold. A non-trivial example of CR-lightlike submanifold of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold is also constructed.
We prove the semi-Riemannian bumpy metric theorem using equivariant variational genericity. The theorem states that, on a given compact manifold $M$, the set of semi-Riemannian metrics that admit only nondegenerate closed geodesics is generic relatively to the $C^k$-topology, $k=2,...,\infty$, in the set of metrics of a given index on $M$. A higher order genericity Riemannian result of Klingenberg and Takens is extended to semi-Riemannian geometry.
To determine the Lie groups that admit a flat (eventually complete) left invariant semi-Riemannian metric is an open and difficult problem. The main aim of this paper is the study of the flatness of left invariant semi Riemannian metrics on quadratic Lie groups i.e. Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant semi Riemannian metric. We give a useful necessary and sufficient condition that guaranties the flatness of a left invariant semi Riemannian metric defined on a quadratic Lie group. All these semi Riemannian metrics are complete. We show that there are no Riemannian or Lorentzian flat left inv…
We find the index of $\widetilde{\nabla}$-quasi-conformally symmetric and $\widetilde{\nabla}$-concircularly symmetric semi-Riemannian manifolds, where $\widetilde{\nabla}$ is metric connection.
We classify the semi-Riemannian submersions from a pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the fibres are connected and totally geodesic. Also we obtain the classification of the semi-Riemannian submersions from a complex pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the fibres are complex, connected and totally geodesic submanifolds.
Lorentzian versions of classical Riemannian volume comparison theorems by Gunther, Bishop and Bishop-Gromov, are stated for suitable natural subsets of general semi-Riemannian manifolds. The problem is more subtle in the Bishop-Gromov case, which is extensively discussed. For the general semi-Riemannian case, a local version of the Gunther and Bishop theorems is given and applied.
A $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold is called Killing submersion if it admits a Riemannian submersion over a surface such that its fibers are the trajectories of a complete unit Killing vector field. In this paper, we give a characterization of proper biharmonic CMC surfaces in a Killing submersion. In the last part, we also classify the proper biharmonic Hopf cylinders in a Killing submersion.
As a generalization of slant submersions (Sahin, 2011), semi-slant submersions (Park and Prasad), and slant Riemannian maps (Sahin), we define the notion of semi-slant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We study the integrability of distributions, the geometry of fibers, the harmonicity of such maps, etc. We also find a condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and investigate some decomposition theorems. Moreover, we give examples.
This paper presents an investigation of the relation between some positivity of the curvature and the finiteness of fundamental groups in semi-Riemannian geometry. We consider semi-Riemannian submersions $π: (E, g) \rightarrow (B, -g_{B}) $ under the condition with $(B, g_{B})$ Riemannian, the fiber closed Riemannian, and the horizontal distribution integrable. Then we prove that, if the lightlike geodesically complete or timelike geodesically complete semi-Riemannian manifold $E$ has some positivity of curvature, then the fundamental group of the fiber is finite. Moreover we construct an exam…
We introduce the notion of spectral flow along a periodic semi-Riemannian geodesic, as a suitable substitute of the Morse index in the Riemannian case. We study the growth of the spectral flow along a closed geodesic under iteration, determining its asymptotic behavior.
As a generalization of slant Riemannian maps (Sahin), semi-slant Riemannian maps (Park), almost h-slant submersions (Park 2012), and almost h-semi-slant submersions (Park 2011), we introduce the notion of almost h-semi-slant Riemannian maps from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We investigate the integrability of distributions, the harmonicity of such maps, the geometry of fibers, etc. We also deal with the condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and study some decomposition theorems. Moreover, we give some examples.

The aim of the present paper to define and study semi-slant $ξ^\perp-$Riemannian submersions from Sasakian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds as a generalization of anti-invariant $ξ^\perp-$Riemannian submersions, semi-invariant $ξ^\perp-$Riemannian submersions and slant Riemannian submersions. We obtain characterizations, investigate the geometry of foliations which arise from the definition of this new submersion. After we investigate the geometry of foliations, we obtain necessary and sufficient condition for base manifold to be a locally product manifold and proving new conditions to be t…
We classify semi-Riemannian submersions with connected totally geodesic fibres from a real pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a semi-Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the dimension of the fibres is less than or equal to three and the metrics induced on fibres are negative definite. Also, we obtain the classification of semi-Riemannian submersions with connected complex totally geodesic fibres from a complex pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a semi-Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the dimension of the fibres is less than or equal to two and the metric induced on fibres are negativ…
We study spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on two relevant almost-Riemannian manifolds, namely the Grushin structures on the cylinder and on the sphere. This operator contains first order diverging terms caused by the divergence of the volume. We get explicit descriptions of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions. In particular in both cases we get a Weyl's law with leading term $E\log E$. We then study the drastic effect of Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials on the spectral properties. Other generalised Riemannian structures including conic and anti-conic type manifolds are als…

In this paper we investigate the mean curvature flow (MCF) of a regular leaf of a closed generalized isoparametric foliation as initial datum, generalizing previous results of Radeschi and first author. We show that, under bounded curvature conditions, any finite time singularity is a singular leaf, and the singularity is of type I. We also discuss the existence of basin of attractions, how cylinder structures can affect convergence of basic MCF of immersed submanifolds and make a few remarks on MCF of non closed leaves of generalized isoparametric foliation.
In this article, we get classification theorems for a Ricci soliton on the pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface of the Minkowski space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ taking the potential vector field as the tangent component of the position vector of the pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface, denoted by $(M,g,{\bf x}^T,λ)$ in both Riemannian and Lorentzian settings. First, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition that a pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface $(M,g)$ in $\mathbb{E}^4_1$ admits a Ricci soliton $(M,g,{\bf x}^T,λ)$. In each of the form of the shape operator of a pseudo-Riemannian hypersurface, we obtain cha…
In this paper we study a semi-Riemannian submersion from Lorentzian (para)almost contact manifolds and find necessary and sufficient conditions for the characteristic vector field to be vertical or horizontal. We also obtain decomposition theorems for an anti-invariant semi-Riemannian submersion from Lorentzian (para)Sasakian manifolds onto a Lorentzian manifold.
In our article, we introduce and study lightlike hypersurfaces of a metallic semi-Riemannian manifold. We examine some geometric properties of invariant lightlike hypersurfaces. We show that the induced structure on an invariant lightlike hypersurface is also metallic. We also define screen semi-invariant lightlike hypersurfaces, investigate integrability conditions for the distributions and give some examples.
We list up all the possible local orbit types of hyperbolic or elliptic orbits for the isotropy representations of semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces. It is key to give a recipe to determine the local orbit types of hyperbolic principal orbits by using three kind of restricted root systems and Satake diagrams associated with semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces.
The Golden Ratio is fascinating topic that continually generated news ideas. A Riemannian manifold endowed with a Golden Structure will be called a Golden Riemannian manifold. The main purpose of the present paper is to study the geometry of radical transversal lightlike submanifolds and transversal lightlike submanifolds of Golden Semi-Riemannian manifolds. We investigate the geometry of distributions and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the induced connection on these manifolds to be metric connection.
Let M be a smooth compact manifold without boundary. We consider two smooth Sub-Semi-Riemannian metrics on M. Under suitable conditions, we show that they are almost conformally isometric in an Lp sense. Assume also that M carries a Riemannian metric with parallel Ricci curvature. Then an equation of Ricci type, is in some sense solvable, without assuming any closeness near a special metric.
We consider the inverse mean curvature flow in smooth Riemannian manifolds of the form $([R_{0},\infty)\times S^n,\bar{g})$ with metric $\bar{g}=dr^2+{\vartheta}^2(r)σ$ and non-positive radial sectional curvature. We prove, that for initial mean-convex graphs over $S^n$ the flow exists for all times and remains a graph over $S^{n}$. Under weak further assumptions on the ambient manifold, we prove optimal decay of the gradient and that the flow leaves become umbilic exponentially fast. We prove optimal $C^2$ estimates in case that the ambient pinching improves.
Harvey-Lawson and Anciaux introduced the notion of austere submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We give an equivalent condition for an orbit of the isotropy representations for semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space to be an austere submanifold in a pseudo-sphere in terms of restricted root system theory with respect to Cartan subspaces. By using the condition we give examples of austere orbits.
In this paper we introduce paraquaternionic CR-submanifolds of almost paraquaternionic hermitian manifolds and state some basic results on their differential geometry. We also study a class of semi-Riemannian submersions from paraquaternionic CR-submanifolds of paraquaternionic Kaehler manifolds.
