We prove global existence and scattering for the defocusing, cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^s(\rr^3)$ for $s > {4/5}$. The main new estimate in the argument is a Morawetz-type inequality for the solution $ϕ$. This estimate bounds $\|ϕ(x,t)\|_{L^4_{x,t}(\rr^3 \times \rr)}$, whereas the well-known Morawetz-type estimate of Lin-Strauss controls $\int_0^{\infty}\int_{\rr^3}\frac{(ϕ(x,t))^4}{|x|} dx dt
We obtain certain time decay and regularity estimates for 3D Schroedinger equation with a potential in the Kato class by using Besov spaces associated with Schroedinger operators.
The Klein-Gordon - Schroedinger system with Yukawa coupling is shown to have a unique global solution for rough data, which not necessarily have finite energy. The proof uses a generalized bilinear estimate of Strichartz type and Bourgain's idea to split the data into low and high frequency parts.
The Cauchy problem for a coupled Schroedinger and Benjamin - Ono system is shown to be globally well-posed for a class of data without finite energy. The proof uses the I-method introduced by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka, and Tao.
We prove L^1 --> L^\infty estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation in three dimensions. The potential is assumed to belong to certain L^p spaces, but no pointwise decay estimates and no additional regularity is required.
The Cauchy problem for a coupled system of the Schroedinger and the KdV equation is shown to be globally well-posed for data with infinite energy. The proof uses refined bilinear Strichartz estimates and the I-method introduced by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka, and Tao.
The purpose of this note is to use the results and methods of our previous work with Bourgain to obtain control and observability by rough functions and sets on rectangular 2-tori. We show that any Lebesgue measurable set of positive measure can be used for observability for the Schroedinger equation. This leads to controllability with rough localization and control functions. For non-empty open sets this follows from the results of Haraux '89 and Jaffard '89 while for square tori and sufficiently long times this can be deduced from the results of Jakobson '97.
We prove some local (in time) wellposedness results for nonlinear Schroedinger equations with rough data, that is, the initial value belongs to some Sobolev space of negative index. The proof uses the Fourier restriction norm method.
We study the long-time behavior of solutions to nonlinear Schroedinger equations with some critical rough potential of inverse square type. The new ingredients are the interaction Morawetz-type inequalities and Sobolev norm property associated with the Lapalacian with inverse square potential. We use such properties to obtain the scattering theory for the defocusing energy-subcritical nonlinear Schroedinger equation with inverse square potential in energy space.
This paper proves endpoint Strichartz estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation in $R^3$, with a time-dependent potential that keeps a constant profile and is subject to a rough motion, which need not be differentiable and may be large in norm. The potential is also subjected to a time-dependent rescaling, with a non-differentiable dilation parameter. We use the Strichartz estimates to prove the non-dispersion of bound states, when the path is small in norm, as well as boundedness of energy. We also include a sample nonlinear application of the linear results.
We study the energy-critical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an energy- subcritical perturbation. We show the existence of a ground state in the four or higher dimensions. Moreover, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a solution to scatter, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle [16].
Scattering of radial $H^1$ solutions to the 3D focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation below a mass-energy threshold $M[u]E[u] < M[Q]E[Q]$ and satisfying an initial mass-gradient bound $\|u_0\|_{L^2} \|\nabla u_0 \|_{L^2} < \|Q\|_{L^2} \|\nabla Q\|_{L^2}$, where $Q$ is the ground state, was established in Holmer-Roudenko (2007). In this note, we extend the result in Holmer-Roudenko (2007) to non-radial $H^1$ data. For this, we prove a non-radial profile decomposition involving a spatial translation parameter. Then, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle (2006), we control via momentum conservation…
In this paper I prove a L^p-L^p' estimate for the solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with a potential in L^1_gamma where in the generic case gamma > 3/2 and in the exceptional case (i.e. when there is a half-bound state of zero energy) gamma > 5/2. I use this estimate to construct the scattering operator for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a potential. I prove moreover, that the low-energy limit of the scattering operator uniquely determines the potential and the nonlinearity using a method that allows as well for the reconstruction of the potential and of the nonl…
We show that fixed energy scattering measurements for the magnetic Schroedinger operator uniquely determine the magnetic field and electric potential in dimensions $n \geq 3$. The magnetic potential, its first derivatives, and the electric potential are assumed to be exponentially decaying. This improves an earlier result of Eskin and Ralston which considered potentials with many derivatives. The proof is close to arguments in inverse boundary problems, and is based on constructing complex geometrical optics solutions to the Schroedinger equation via a pseudodifferential conjugation argument.
We give a short description of the proof of asymptotic-completeness for NLS-type equations, including time dependent potential terms, with radial data in three dimensions. We also show how the method applies for the two-body Quantum Scattering case.
Let g be a scattering metric on a compact manifold X with boundary, i.e., a smooth metric giving the interior of X the structure of a complete Riemannian manifold with asymptotically conic ends. An example is any compactly supported perturbation of the standard metric on Euclidean space. Consider the operator $H = \half Δ+ V$, where $Δ$ is the positive Laplacian with respect to g and V is a smooth real-valued function on X vanishing to second order at the boundary. Assuming that g is non-trapping, we construct a global parametrix for the kernel of the Schroedinger propagator $U(t) = e^{-itH}$ …
In this paper, we study some modified linear restriction estimates of the dynamics generated by Schroedinger operator on metric cone $M$, where the metric cone $M$ is of the form $M=(0,\infty)_r\timesΣ$ with the cross section $Σ$ being a compact $(n-1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(Σ,h)$ and the equipped metric is $g=\mathrm{d}r^2+r^2h$. Assuming the initial data possesses additional regularity in angular variable $θ\inΣ$, we show some linear restriction estimates for the solutions. As applications, we obtain global-in-time Strichartz estimates for radial initial data and show small initi…
We prove long time Anderson localization for nonlinear random Schroedinger equation in $\ell^2$ by making a Birkoff normal form type transform to creat an energy barrier where there is essentially no mode propagation. One of the new features is that this transform is in a small neighborhood enabling us to treat "rough" data, where there are no moment conditions. The formulation of the present result is inspired by the RAGE theorem.
We show an improved global well-posedness result for the Zakharov system in two space dimensions with minimal regularity assumptions for the data. Especially we are able to allow Schroedinger and wave data, which do not belong to H^1 and L^2, respectively, thus with infinite energy. The proof uses a refined I-method originally initiated by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao and bilinear estimates by Bejenaru, Herr, Holmer and Tataru. A polynomial growth bound for the solution is also given.
We consider a nonlinear semi-classical Schroedinger equation for which quadratic oscillations lead to focusing at one point, described by a nonlinear scattering operator. The relevance of the nonlinearity was discussed by R. Carles, C. Fermanian-Kammerer and I. Gallagher for $L^2$-supercritical power-like nonlinearities and more general initial data. The present results concern the $L^2$-critical case, in space dimensions 1 and 2; we describe the set of non-linearizable data, which is larger, due to the scaling. As an application, we precise a result by F. Merle and L. Vega concerning finite t…
We study the focusing 3d cubic NLS equation with H^1 data at the mass-energy threshold, namely, when M[u_0]E[u_0] = M[Q]E[Q]. In earlier works of Holmer-Roudenko and Duyckaerts-Holmer-Roudenko, the behavior of solutions (i.e., scattering and blow up in finite time) is classified when M[u_0]E[u_0] < M[Q]E[Q]. In this paper, we first exhibit 3 special solutions: e^{it}Q and Q^+, Q^-; here Q is the ground state, and Q^+, Q^- exponentially approach the ground state solution in the positive time direction, meanwhile Q^+ having finite time blow up and Q^- scattering in the negative time direction. S…
We prove the existence of weak solutions in the space of energy for a class of non-linear Schroedinger equations in the presence of a external rough magnetic potential. Under our assumptions it is not possible to study the problem by means of usual arguments like resolvent techniques or Fourier integral operators, for example. We use a parabolic regularization and we solve the approximating Cauchy problem. This is achieved by obtaining suitable smoothing estimates for the dissipative evolution. The total mass and energy bounds allow to extend the solution globally in time. We then infer suffic…
We consider the problem of identifying sharp criteria under which radial $H^1$ (finite energy) solutions to the focusing 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^2u=0$ scatter, i.e. approach the solution to a linear Schrödinger equation as $t\to \pm \infty$. The criteria is expressed in terms of the scale-invariant quantities $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}$ and $M[u]E[u]$, where $u_0$ denotes the initial data, and $M[u]$ and $E[u]$ denote the (conserved in time) mass and energy of the corresponding solution $u(t)$. The focusing NLS possesses a soliton solutio…
Given a one dimensional perturbed Schroedinger operator H=-(d/dx)^2+V(x) we consider the associated wave operators W_+, W_- defined as the strong L^2 limits as s-> \pm\infty of the operators e^{isH} e^{-isH_0} We prove that the wave operators are bounded operators on L^p for all 1<p<\infty, provided (1+|x|)^2 V(x) is integrable, or else (1+|x|)V(x) is integrable and 0 is not a resonance. For p=\infty we obtain an estimate in terms of the Hilbert transform. Some applications to dispersive estimates for equations with variable rough coefficients are given.
We study the behavior of solutions to a Schr{ö}dinger equation with large, rapidly oscillating, mean zero, random potential with Gaussian distribution. We show that in high dimension $d>\mathfrak{m}$, where $\mathfrak{m}$ is the order of the spatial pseudo-differential operator in the Schr{ö}dinger equation (with $\mathfrak{m}=2$ for the standard Laplace operator), the solution converges in the $L^2$ sense uniformly in time over finite intervals to the solution of a deterministic Schr{ö}dinger equation as the correlation length $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. This generalizes to long times the conve…
We prove scattering of solutions below the energy norm of the 3D Klein-Gordon equation for 5>p>3. In order to do that, we generate an exponential-type decay estimate in H^{s}, s<1, by means of concentration and a low-high frequency decomposition.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a family of semilinear defocusing Schrödinger equations with monomial nonlinearities in one space dimension. We establish global well-posedness and scattering. Our analysis is based on a four-particle interaction Morawetz estimate giving \emph{a priori} $L^8_{t,x}$ spacetime control on solutions.
Consider the two-dimensional inverse elastic wave scattering by an infinite rough surface with a Dirichlet boundary condition. A non-interative sampling technique is proposed for detecting the rough surface by taking elastic wave measurements on a bounded line segment above the surface, based on reconstructing a modified near-field equation associated with a special surface, which generalized our pervious work for the Helmholtz equation (SIAM J. IMAGING. SCI. 10(3)(2017), 1579-1602) to the Navier equation. Several numerical examples are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the invers…
Consider the elastic scattering of a plane or point incident wave by an unbounded and rigid rough surface. The angular spectrum representation (ASR) for the time-harmonic Navier equation is derived in three dimensions. The ASR is utilized as a radiation condition to the elastic rough surface scattering problem. The uniqueness is proved through a Rellich-type identity for surfaces given by uniformly Lipschitz functions. In the case of flat surfaces with a local perturbation, we deduce an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the existence results for general …
Spectral theory for self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions
In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to…
In this paper, we consider the direct and inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic waves by an unbounded rough interface with a buried impenetrable obstacle. We first study the well-posedness of the direct problem with a local source by the variational method; the well-posedness result is then extended to scattering problems induced by point source waves (PSWs) and hyper-singular point source waves (HSPSWs). For PSW or HSPSW incident waves, the induced total field admits a uniformly bounded estimate in any compact subset far from the source position. Moreover, we show that the scattered …
This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by an unbounded, locally rough interface which is assumed to be a local perturbation of a plane. The purpose of this paper is to recover the local perturbation of the interface from the near-field measurement given on a straight line segment with a finite distance above the interface and generated by point sources. Precisely, we propose a novel version of the linear sampling method to recover the location and shape of the local perturbation of the interface numerically. Our method is based on a modified near-…
We study 4 problems in the area of scattering of time harmonic acoustic or electromagnetic waves by unbounded rough surfaces/inhomogeneous layers. Specifically we study: i) a boundary value problem (BVP) for the Helmholtz equation, in both 2 and 3 dimensions, modelling scattering of time harmonic waves due to a source that lies within a finite distance of the boundary and which decays along the boundary, by a layer of spatially varying refractive index above an unbounded rough surface on which the field vanishes; ii) a BVP for the Helmholtz equation with an impedance boundary condition, in 2 a…
We study the inverse scattering problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the Yukawa potential. The nonlinearity of the equation is nonlocal. We reconstruct the potential and the nonlinearity by the knowledge of the scattering states. Our result is applicable to reconstructing the nonlinearity of the semi-relativistic Hartree equation.
This paper investigates the elastic scattering by unbounded deterministic and random rough surfaces, which both are assumed to be graphs of Lipschitz continuous functions. For the deterministic case, an a priori bound explicitly dependent on frequencies is derived by the variational approach. For the scattering by random rough surfaces with a random source, well-posedness of the corresponding variation problem is proved. Moreover, a similar bound with explicit dependence on frequencies for the random case is also established based upon the deterministic result, Pettis measurability theorem and…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior at time infinity of solutions close to a non-zero constant equilibrium for the Gross-Pitaevskii (or Ginzburg-Landau Schroedinger) equation. We prove that, in dimensions larger than 3, small perturbations can be approximated at time infinity by the linearized evolution, and the wave operators are homeomorphic around 0 in certain Sobolev spaces.
Existence and uniqueness of the scattering solutions is proved for a class of bounded rough obstacles which is much larger than the class of Lipschitz obstacles. Integral equations method is not used. The approach is based on the representation theorem for selfadjoint operators via closed symmetric quadratic forms and on the limiting absorption principles. For the Dirichlet boundary condition no assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed, for the Neumann boundary condition and the Robin boundary condition some assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed.
We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (nonlinear Schroedinger equation) with a repulsive delta function potential. We show that a high velocity incoming soliton is split into a transmitted component and a reflected component. The transmitted mass (L^2 norm squared) is shown to be in good agreement with the quantum transmission rate of the delta function potential. We further show that the transmitted and reflected components resolve into solitons plus dispersive radiation, and quantify the mass and phase of these solitons.
