We investigate the asymptotic behavior at time infinity of solutions close to a non-zero constant equilibrium for the Gross-Pitaevskii (or Ginzburg-Landau Schroedinger) equation. We prove that, in dimensions larger than 3, small perturbations can be approximated at time infinity by the linearized evolution, and the wave operators are homeomorphic around 0 in certain Sobolev spaces.
We give a new proof of uniqueness of solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy, first established by Erdos, Schlein and Yau, in a different space, based on space-time estimates.
We study asymptotic behaviour at time infinity of solutions close to the non-zero constant equilibrium for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two and three spatial dimensions. We construct a class of global solutions with prescribed dispersive asymptotic behavior, which is given in terms of the linearized evolution.
We study the stability of the standing wave solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar quantum gases and characterize their orbit. As an intermediate step, we consider the corresponding constrained minimization problem and establish existence, symmetry and uniqueness of the ground state solutions.
Bäcklund transformations are applied to study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Supported by previous results, a class of Bäcklund transformations admitted by this equation are constructed. Schwartzian derivative as well as its invariance properties turn out to represent a key tool in the present investigation. Examples and explicit solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are obtained.
We consider systems of $N$ bosons in $\mathbb{R}^3$, trapped by an external potential. The interaction is repulsive and has a scattering length of the order $N^{-1}$ (Gross-Pitaevskii regime). We determine the ground state energy and the low-energy excitation spectrum up to errors that vanish in the limit $N\to \infty$.
We review some mathematical work on the Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We start with the classical results by Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason on the ground state energy and by Lieb and Seiringer on the existence of Bose-Einstein condensation. Afterwards, we discuss some more recent progress, based on a rigorous version of Bogoliubov theory.
We consider Bose gases consisting of $N$ particles trapped in a box with volume one and interacting through a repulsive potential with scattering length of the order $N^{-1}$(Gross-Pitaevskii regime). We determine the ground state energy and the low-energy excitation spectrum, up to errors vanishing as $N \to \infty$. Our results confirm Bogoliubov's predictions.
We derive the asymptotical dynamical law for Ginzburg-Landau vortices in an inhomogeneous background density under the Schrödinger dynamics, when the Ginzburg-Landau parameter goes to zero. New ingredients involve across the cores lower bound estimates and approximations.
This paper surveys various aspects of the hydrodynamic formulation of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation obtained via the Madelung transform in connexion to models of quantum hydrodynamics and to compressible fluids of the Korteweg type.
We consider Bose gases of $N$ particles in a box of volume one, interacting through a repulsive potential with scattering length of order $N^{1-κ}$, for $κ> 0$. Such regimes interpolate between the Gross-Pitaevskii and thermodynamic limits. Assuming that $κ$ is sufficiently small, we determine the ground state energy and the low-energy excitation spectrum of the system, up to errors vanishing in the limit of large $N$.
We consider the Gross--Pitaevskii equation on $\R^4$ and the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\R^3$ with non-vanishing boundary conditions at spatial infinity. By viewing these equations as perturbations to the energy-critical NLS, we prove that they are globally well-posed in their energy spaces. In particular, we prove unconditional uniqueness in the energy spaces for these equations.
We present a new, simpler proof of the unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy in $\R^3$. One of the main tools in our analysis is the quantum de Finetti theorem. Our uniqueness result is equivalent to the one established in the celebrated works of Erdös, Schlein and Yau, \cite{esy1,esy2,esy3,esy4}.
We prove an adiabatic theorem for the non-autonomous Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the case of a weak trap. More precisely, we assume that the external potential decays suitably at infinity and admits exactly one bound state.
We prove the existence of scattering states for the defocusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy in ${\mathbb R}^3$. Moreover, we show that an energy growth condition commonly used in the well-posedness theory of the GP hierarchy is, in a specific sense, necessary. In fact, we prove that without the latter, there exist initial data for the focusing cubic GP hierarchy for which instantaneous blowup occurs.
In this paper, we study solutions to the three-dimensional quintic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. We prove unconditional uniqueness among all small solutions in the critical space $\mathfrak{H}^1$ (which corresponds to $H^1$ on the NLS level). With slight modifications to the proof, we also prove unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the Hartree hierarchy without smallness condition. Our proof uses the quantum de Finetti theorem, and is an extension of the work by Chen-Hainzl-Pavlović-Seiringer \cite{CHPS}, and our previous work \cite{UniqueLowReg}.
We consider the (de)focusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$, which is an infinite hierarchy of coupled linear inhomogeneous PDE which appears in the derivation of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation from quantum many-particle systems. Motivated by the fact that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb{R}$ is an integrable equation which admits infinitely many conserved quantities, we exhibit an infinite sequence of operators which generate analogous conserved quantities for the GP hierarchy.
We consider a gas of $N$ bosons in a box with volume one interacting through a two-body potential with scattering length of order $N^{-1}$ (Gross-Pitaevskii limit). Assuming the (unscaled) potential to be sufficiently small, we show that the ground state of the system and all states with relatively small excitation energy exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation, with a uniform (i.e. $N$ independent) bound on the number of excitations.
In this paper, we establish the unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}^d$ in a low regularity Sobolev type space. More precisely, we reduce the regularity $s$ down to the currently known regularity requirement for unconditional uniqueness of solutions to the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation ($s\ge\frac{d}{6}$ if $d=1,2$ and $s>s_c=\frac{d-2}{2}$ if $d\ge 3$). In such a way, we extend the recent work of Chen-Hainzl-Pavlović-Seiringer.
We study the Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We show that the ground state energy and ground states of the many-body quantum system are correctly described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the large particle number limit, and provide the optimal convergence rate. Our work extends the previous results of Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason on the leading order convergence, and of Boccato, Brennecke, Cenatiempo and Schlein on the homogeneous gas. Our method relies on the idea of 'completing the square', inspired by recent works of Brietzke, Fournais an…
This article consists of two parts. In the first part, we review the most recent proofs establishing quadratic Morawetz inequalities for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We also describe the applications of these estimates to the problem of quantum scattering. In the second part, we generalize some of the methods developed for the NLS by many authors to the case of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. In particular, we prove both regular and interaction Morawetz identities for the GP hierarchy, which appear here for the first time in the literature.
We perform a rigorous analysis of the anelastic approximation for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with $x$-dependent chemical potential. For general initial data and periodic boundary condition, we show that as $\eps\to 0$, equivalently the Planck constant tends to zero, the density $|ψ^{\eps}|^{2}$ converges toward the chemical potential $ρ_{0}(x)$ and the velocity field converges to the anelastic system. When the chemical potential is a constant, the anelastic system will reduce to the incompressible Euler equations. The resonant effects the singular limit process and it can be overcome becaus…
We consider solutions of the focusing cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. We identify an observable corresponding to the average energy per particle, and we prove that it is a conserved quantity. We prove that all solutions to the focusing GP hierarchy at the $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical level blow up in finite time if the energy per particle in the initial condition is negative. Our results do not assume any factorization of the initial data.
We consider the cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies in $d\geq1$ dimensions, for focusing and defocusing interactions. We present a new proof of existence of solutions that does not require the a priori bound on the spacetime norm, which was introduced in the work of Klainerman and Machedon, \cite{klma}, and used in our earlier work, \cite{chpa2}.
We consider the semi-classical limit for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In order to consider non-trivial boundary conditions at infinity, we work in Zhidkov spaces rather than in Sobolev spaces. For the usual cubic nonlinearity, we obtain a point-wise description of the wave function as the Planck constant goes to zero, so long as no singularity appears in the limit system. For a cubic-quintic nonlinearity, we show that working with analytic data may be necessary and sufficient to obtain a similar result.
We consider systems of N bosons trapped on the two-dimensional unit torus, in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, where the scattering length of the repulsive interaction is exponentially small in the number of particles. We show that low-energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation, with almost optimal bounds on the number of orthogonal excitations.
We study the dipolar Gross-Piteavskii functional with the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction term without trapping potential and in the regime where the dipole-dipole interaction dominates the repulsive short-range interaction. We show that, above a critical mass, the functional admits minimizers and we prove their regularity and exponential decay. We also estimate the critical mass in terms of the parameters of the system.
Domain walls are minimizers of energy for coupled one-dimensional Gross--Pitaevskii systems with nontrivial boundary conditions at infinity. It has been shown that these solutions are orbitally stable in the space of complex $\dot{H}^1$ functions with the same limits at infinity. In the present work we adopt a new weighted $H^1$ space to control perturbations of the domain walls and thus to obtain an improved orbital stability result. A major difficulty arises from the degeneracy of linearized operators at the domain walls and the lack of coercivity.
We consider the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii equations supplemented with non-standard boundary conditions. We prove two mathematical results concerned with the initial value problem for these equations in Zhidkov spaces.
We consider a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a nonlocal interaction potential. We provide sufficient conditions on the potential such that there exists a range of speeds in which nontrivial traveling waves do not exist
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear orbital stability of the stationary traveling wave of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by using Zakharov-Shabat's inverse scattering method.
We study a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model arising in the description of exciton-polariton condensates. We derive global in-time existence results and various a-priori estimates for this model posed on the one-dimensional torus. Moreover, we analyze in detail the long-time behavior of spatially homogenous solutions and their respective steady states and present numerical simulations in the case of more general initial data. We also study the convergence to the corresponding adiabatic regime, which results in a single damped-driven Gross-Pitaveskii equation.
We study the energy space for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with magnetic field and non-vanishing conditions at infinity. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the magnetic field for which the energy space is non-empty.
Extensions to higher-dimensions are given for a convolution estimate used by Klainerman and Machedon in their study of uniqueness of solutions for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. Such estimates determine more general forms of Stein-Weiss integrals involving restriction to smooth submanifolds.
We prove existence and uniqueness of a positive solution to a system of two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We give a full asymptotic expansion of this solution into powers of the semi classical parameter $\varepsilon$ in the Thomas--Fermi limit $\varepsilon\to 0$.
In this paper, we establish the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an rotational angular momentum term in the space $\Real^2$.
We study a long wave-length asymptotics for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation corresponding to perturbation of a constant state of modulus one. We exhibit lower bounds on the first occurence of possible zeros (vortices) and compare the solutions with the corresponding solutions to the linear wave equation or variants. The results rely on the use of the Madelung transform, which yields the hydrodynamical form of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, as well as of an augmented system.
We establish the stability in the energy space for sums of solitons of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation when their speeds are mutually distinct and distinct from zero, and when the solitons are initially well-separated and spatially ordered according to their speeds.
We prove global wellposedness in the energy space of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schroedinger and Gross-Pitaevskii equations on the exterior of a non-trapping domain in dimension 3. The main ingredient is a Strichartz estimate obtained combining a semi-classical Strichartz estimate with a smoothing effect on exterior domains.
We prove the global-in-time well-posedness of the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the energy space, which is a complete metric space equipped with a newly introduced metric and with the energy norm describing the $H^s$ regularities of the solutions. We establish a family of conserved energies for the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, such that the energy norms of the solutions are conserved globally in time. This family of energies is also conserved by the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries flow.
In this short report we give a proof of the existence of a stationary solution to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in $2d$ driven by a space-time white noise.
We study dynamics of vortices in solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation $i \partial_t u = Δu + \varepsilon^{-2} u (1 - |u|^2)$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with nonzero degree at infinity. We prove that vortices move according to the classical Kirchhoff-Onsager ODE for a small but finite coupling parameter $\varepsilon$. By carefully tracking errors we allow for asymptotically large numbers of vortices, and this lets us connect the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the plane to two dimensional incompressible Euler equations through the work of Schochet [21].
In the nineties, Klein, Majda and Damodaran have formally derived a simplified asymptotic motion law for the evolution of nearly parallel vortex filaments in the context of the three dimensional Euler equation for incompressible fluids. In the present work, we rigorously derive the corresponding asymptotic motion law in the context of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We establish the orbital stability of the black soliton, or kink solution, $\v_0(x) = þ\big(\frac{x}{\sqrt{2}} \big)$, to the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with respect to perturbations in the energy space.
We study the Cauchy problem for an inhomogeneous Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We first derive a sharp threshold for global existence and blow up of the solution. Then we construct and classify finite time blow up solutions at the minimal mass threshold. Additionally, using variational techniques, we study the existence, the orbital stability and instability of standing waves.
In this paper, we establish the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an angular momentum rotational term in which the angular velocity is equal to the isotropic trapping frequency in the space $\Real^3$.
We construct a smooth branch of travelling wave solutions for the 2 dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations for small speed. These travelling waves exhibit two vortices far away from each other. We also compute the leading order term of the derivatives with respect to the speed. We construct these solutions by an implicit function type argument.
Leapfrogging motion of vortex rings sharing the same axis of symmetry was first predicted by Helmholtz in his famous work on the Euler equation for incompressible fluids. Its justification in that framework remains an open question to date. In this paper, we rigorously derive the corresponding leapfrogging motion for the axially symmetric three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation involving a nonlocal interaction potential. Our aim is to give sufficient conditions that cover a variety of nonlocal interactions such that the associated Cauchy problem is globally well-posed with non-zero boundary condition at infinity, in any dimension. We focus on even potentials that are positive definite or positive tempered distributions.
We provide a rigorous mathematical derivation of the convergence in the long-wave transonic limit of the minimizing travelling waves for the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation towards ground states for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (KP I).
We study the generalized point-vortex problem and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on surfaces of revolution. We find rotating periodic solutions to the generalized point-vortex problem, which have two two rings of $n$ equally spaced vortices with degrees $\pm 1$. In particular we prove the existence of such solutions when the surface is longitudinally symmetric. Then we seek a rotating solution to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation having vortices that follow those of the point-vortex flow for $\varepsilon$ sufficiently small.
We establish a rigorous well-posedness results for the Marchenko system associated to the scattering theory of the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP). Under some assumptions on the scattering data, these well-posedness results provide regular solutions for (GP). We also construct particular solutions, called $N-$soliton solutions as an approximate superposition of traveling waves. A study for the asymptotic behaviors of such solutions when $t\rightarrow\pm \infty$ is also made.
We study the Cauchy problem for the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The global well-posedness in the natural energy space was proved by Gérard \cite{Gerard}. In this paper we prove scattering for small data in the same space with some additional angular regularity, and in particular in the radial case we obtain small energy scattering.
In this paper, we justify the semiclassical limit of Gross-Pitaevskii equation with Dirichlet boundary condition on the 3-D upper space under the assumption that the leading order terms to both initial amplitude and initial phase function are sufficiently small in some high enough Sobolev norms. We remark that the main difficulty of the proof lies in the fact that the boundary layer appears in the leading order terms of the amplitude functions and the gradient of the phase functions to the WKB expansions of the solutions. In particular, we partially solved the open question proposed in \cite{C…
We study the dynamics of vortices in an inhomogeneous Gross-Pitaevskii equation $i \partial_t u = Δu + {1\over \varepsilon^2} (p_\varepsilon^2(x) - |u|^2)$. For a unique scaling regime $|p_\varepsilon(x) - 1 | = O(|\log \varepsilon|^{-1})$, it is shown that vortices can interact both with the background perturbation and with each other. Results for associated parabolic and elliptic problems are discussed.
The Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in three space dimensions is shown to have an unconditionally unique global solution for data of the form 1 + H^s for 5/6 < s < 1, which do not have necessarily finite energy. The proof uses the I-method which is complicated by the fact that no L^2 -conservation law holds. This improves former results of Bethuel-Saut and Gerard.
We prove existence and qualitative properties of ground state solutions to a generalized nonlocal 3rd-4th order Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Using a mountain pass argument on spheres and constructing appropriately localized Palais-Smale sequences we are able to prove existence of real positive ground states as saddle points. The analysis is deployed in the set of possible states, thus overcoming the problem that the energy is unbounded below. We also prove a corresponding nonlocal Pohozaev identity with no rest term, a crucial part of the analysis.
