This paper establishes the $L^p$ boundedness of wave operators for linear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with time-dependent potentials. The approach to the proof is based on new cancellation lemmas. As a typical application based on this method, combined with Strichartz estimates is the existence and scattering for nonlinear dispersive equations. For example, we prove global existence and uniform boundedness in $L^{\infty}$, for a class of Hartree nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3),$ allowing the presence of solitons. We also prove the existence of free channel wave operators in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $p>p_c(n)$, with $p_c(3)=6$.
Given a one dimensional perturbed Schroedinger operator H=-(d/dx)^2+V(x) we consider the associated wave operators W_+, W_- defined as the strong L^2 limits as s-> \pm\infty of the operators e^{isH} e^{-isH_0} We prove that the wave operators are bounded operators on L^p for all 1<p<\infty, provided (1+|x|)^2 V(x) is integrable, or else (1+|x|)V(x) is integrable and 0 is not a resonance. For p=\infty we obtain an estimate in terms of the Hilbert transform. Some applications to dispersive estimates for equations with variable rough coefficients are given.
It is known that Fourier integral operators arising when solving Schrödinger-type operators are bounded on the modulation spaces $\cM^{p,q}$, for $1\leq p=q\leq\infty$, provided their symbols belong to the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. However, they generally fail to be bounded on $\cM^{p,q}$ for $p\not=q$. In this paper we study several additional conditions, to be imposed on the phase or on the symbol, which guarantee the boundedness on $\cM^{p,q}$ for $p\not=q$, and between $\cM^{p,q}\to\cM^{q,p}$, $1\leq q< p\leq\infty$. We also study similar problems for operators acting on Wiener amalg…
We study the long-time behavior of solutions to nonlinear Schroedinger equations with some critical rough potential of inverse square type. The new ingredients are the interaction Morawetz-type inequalities and Sobolev norm property associated with the Lapalacian with inverse square potential. We use such properties to obtain the scattering theory for the defocusing energy-subcritical nonlinear Schroedinger equation with inverse square potential in energy space.
We study the energy-critical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an energy- subcritical perturbation. We show the existence of a ground state in the four or higher dimensions. Moreover, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a solution to scatter, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle [16].
We prove global existence and scattering for the defocusing, cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^s(\rr^3)$ for $s > {4/5}$. The main new estimate in the argument is a Morawetz-type inequality for the solution $ϕ$. This estimate bounds $\|ϕ(x,t)\|_{L^4_{x,t}(\rr^3 \times \rr)}$, whereas the well-known Morawetz-type estimate of Lin-Strauss controls $\int_0^{\infty}\int_{\rr^3}\frac{(ϕ(x,t))^4}{|x|} dx dt
We give another proof of the $L^p$ boundedness of scattering wave operators, at the low frequency part of the data. The proof also allows the control of the commutator of multiplication by $|x|$ with the wave operator in $L^p$. The method we develop here is geared to proving similar results for \emph{time dependent potentials}, complementing previous work focused on the high frequency part.
Scattering of radial $H^1$ solutions to the 3D focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation below a mass-energy threshold $M[u]E[u] < M[Q]E[Q]$ and satisfying an initial mass-gradient bound $\|u_0\|_{L^2} \|\nabla u_0 \|_{L^2} < \|Q\|_{L^2} \|\nabla Q\|_{L^2}$, where $Q$ is the ground state, was established in Holmer-Roudenko (2007). In this note, we extend the result in Holmer-Roudenko (2007) to non-radial $H^1$ data. For this, we prove a non-radial profile decomposition involving a spatial translation parameter. Then, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle (2006), we control via momentum conservation…
We give explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of the general second order differential operator L with real- or complex-valued distributional coefficients acting from the Sobolev space W^{1,2}(R^n) to its dual W^{-1,2}(R^n). This enables us to obtain analytic criteria for the fundamental notions of relative form boundedness, compactness, and infinitesimal form boundedness of L with respect to the Laplacian on L^2(R^n). In particular, we establish a complete characterization of the form boundedness of the Schroedinger operator (i \nabla + a)^2 + q with magnetic vector…
This paper proves endpoint Strichartz estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation in $R^3$, with a time-dependent potential that keeps a constant profile and is subject to a rough motion, which need not be differentiable and may be large in norm. The potential is also subjected to a time-dependent rescaling, with a non-differentiable dilation parameter. We use the Strichartz estimates to prove the non-dispersion of bound states, when the path is small in norm, as well as boundedness of energy. We also include a sample nonlinear application of the linear results.
In this paper I prove a L^p-L^p' estimate for the solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with a potential in L^1_gamma where in the generic case gamma > 3/2 and in the exceptional case (i.e. when there is a half-bound state of zero energy) gamma > 5/2. I use this estimate to construct the scattering operator for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a potential. I prove moreover, that the low-energy limit of the scattering operator uniquely determines the potential and the nonlinearity using a method that allows as well for the reconstruction of the potential and of the nonl…
We show that fixed energy scattering measurements for the magnetic Schroedinger operator uniquely determine the magnetic field and electric potential in dimensions $n \geq 3$. The magnetic potential, its first derivatives, and the electric potential are assumed to be exponentially decaying. This improves an earlier result of Eskin and Ralston which considered potentials with many derivatives. The proof is close to arguments in inverse boundary problems, and is based on constructing complex geometrical optics solutions to the Schroedinger equation via a pseudodifferential conjugation argument.
We give a short description of the proof of asymptotic-completeness for NLS-type equations, including time dependent potential terms, with radial data in three dimensions. We also show how the method applies for the two-body Quantum Scattering case.
Let g be a scattering metric on a compact manifold X with boundary, i.e., a smooth metric giving the interior of X the structure of a complete Riemannian manifold with asymptotically conic ends. An example is any compactly supported perturbation of the standard metric on Euclidean space. Consider the operator $H = \half Δ+ V$, where $Δ$ is the positive Laplacian with respect to g and V is a smooth real-valued function on X vanishing to second order at the boundary. Assuming that g is non-trapping, we construct a global parametrix for the kernel of the Schroedinger propagator $U(t) = e^{-itH}$ …
In this paper, we study some modified linear restriction estimates of the dynamics generated by Schroedinger operator on metric cone $M$, where the metric cone $M$ is of the form $M=(0,\infty)_r\timesΣ$ with the cross section $Σ$ being a compact $(n-1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(Σ,h)$ and the equipped metric is $g=\mathrm{d}r^2+r^2h$. Assuming the initial data possesses additional regularity in angular variable $θ\inΣ$, we show some linear restriction estimates for the solutions. As applications, we obtain global-in-time Strichartz estimates for radial initial data and show small initi…
We consider a nonlinear semi-classical Schroedinger equation for which quadratic oscillations lead to focusing at one point, described by a nonlinear scattering operator. The relevance of the nonlinearity was discussed by R. Carles, C. Fermanian-Kammerer and I. Gallagher for $L^2$-supercritical power-like nonlinearities and more general initial data. The present results concern the $L^2$-critical case, in space dimensions 1 and 2; we describe the set of non-linearizable data, which is larger, due to the scaling. As an application, we precise a result by F. Merle and L. Vega concerning finite t…
We study the focusing 3d cubic NLS equation with H^1 data at the mass-energy threshold, namely, when M[u_0]E[u_0] = M[Q]E[Q]. In earlier works of Holmer-Roudenko and Duyckaerts-Holmer-Roudenko, the behavior of solutions (i.e., scattering and blow up in finite time) is classified when M[u_0]E[u_0] < M[Q]E[Q]. In this paper, we first exhibit 3 special solutions: e^{it}Q and Q^+, Q^-; here Q is the ground state, and Q^+, Q^- exponentially approach the ground state solution in the positive time direction, meanwhile Q^+ having finite time blow up and Q^- scattering in the negative time direction. S…
We consider the problem of identifying sharp criteria under which radial $H^1$ (finite energy) solutions to the focusing 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^2u=0$ scatter, i.e. approach the solution to a linear Schrödinger equation as $t\to \pm \infty$. The criteria is expressed in terms of the scale-invariant quantities $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}$ and $M[u]E[u]$, where $u_0$ denotes the initial data, and $M[u]$ and $E[u]$ denote the (conserved in time) mass and energy of the corresponding solution $u(t)$. The focusing NLS possesses a soliton solutio…
We study the behavior of solutions to a Schr{ö}dinger equation with large, rapidly oscillating, mean zero, random potential with Gaussian distribution. We show that in high dimension $d>\mathfrak{m}$, where $\mathfrak{m}$ is the order of the spatial pseudo-differential operator in the Schr{ö}dinger equation (with $\mathfrak{m}=2$ for the standard Laplace operator), the solution converges in the $L^2$ sense uniformly in time over finite intervals to the solution of a deterministic Schr{ö}dinger equation as the correlation length $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. This generalizes to long times the conve…
We use modified scattering theory to demonstrate that small-data solutions to the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on rescaled waveguide manifolds, $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}^d$ for $d\geq 2$, demonstrate boundedness of Sobolev norms as well as weak instability.
Spectral theory for self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions
We study the inverse scattering problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the Yukawa potential. The nonlinearity of the equation is nonlocal. We reconstruct the potential and the nonlinearity by the knowledge of the scattering states. Our result is applicable to reconstructing the nonlinearity of the semi-relativistic Hartree equation.
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior of a quadratic NLS equation with small, time-dependent potential and small spatially localized initial data. We prove global existence and scattering of solutions. The two main ingredients of the proof are the space-time resonance method and the boundedness of wave operators for the linear Schrödinger equation with potential.
It is shown that an elliptic scattering operator $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary with coefficients in the bounded operators of a bundle of Banach spaces of class (HT) and Pisier's property $(α)$ has maximal regularity (up to a spectral shift), provided that the spectrum of the principal symbol of $A$ on the scattering cotangent bundle of the manifold avoids the right half-plane. This is deduced directly from a Seeley theorem, i.e. the resolvent is represented in terms of pseudodifferential operators with R-bounded symbols, thus showing by an iteration argument the R-boundedness of $λ(A…
Adapting and extending the techniques developed in recent work with Vasy for the study of the Cauchy horizon of cosmological spacetimes, we obtain boundedness, regularity and decay of linear scalar waves on subextremal Reissner-Nordström and (slowly rotating) Kerr spacetimes, without any symmetry assumptions; in particular, we provide simple microlocal and scattering theoretic proofs of analogous results by Franzen. We show polynomial decay of linear waves relative to a Sobolev space of order slightly above $1/2$. This complements the generic $H^1_{\mathrm{loc}}$ blow-up result of Luk and Oh.
In this paper, we study the critical norm conjecture for the inter-critical nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with critical index $s_c$ satisfying $\frac{1}{2}<s_c<1$ when $d\geq 5$. Under the assumption of uniform boundedness of the critical norm, we prove the global well-posedness and scattering for the Cauchy problem. We follow the standard `Concentration compactness/Rigidity method' established in \cite{KenigMerle1,KenigMerle2}, and treat three scenarios for the critical element respectively. Moreover, double Duhamel method and interaction Morawetz estimate are applied to exclude the critic…
We consider a class of Fourier integral operators, globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, with symbols and phases satisfying product type estimates (the so-called $SG$ or scattering classes). We prove a sharp continuity result for such operators when acting on the modulation spaces $M^p$. The minimal loss of derivatives is shown to be $d|1/2-1/p|$. This global perspective produces a loss of decay as well, given by the same order. Strictly related, striking examples of unboundedness on $L^p$ spaces are presented.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior at time infinity of solutions close to a non-zero constant equilibrium for the Gross-Pitaevskii (or Ginzburg-Landau Schroedinger) equation. We prove that, in dimensions larger than 3, small perturbations can be approximated at time infinity by the linearized evolution, and the wave operators are homeomorphic around 0 in certain Sobolev spaces.
We consider the Aharonov-Bohm effect for the Schroedinger operator and the related inverse problem in an exterior domain the 2-dim. Euclidean space with Dirichlet boundary condition. We study the structure and asymptotics of generalized eigenfunctions and show that the scattering operator determines the domain and the Hamiltonian up to Gauge equivalence under the equal flux condition. We also show that the flux is determined by the scattering operator if the obstacle is convex.
Consider a one-dimensional Schroedinger operator which is a short range perturbation of a finite-gap operator. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the left, right reflection coefficient such that the difference of the potentials has finite support to the left, right, respectively. Moreover, we apply these results to show a unique continuation type result for solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in this context. By virtue of the Miura transform an analogous result for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is also obtained.
We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (nonlinear Schroedinger equation) with a repulsive delta function potential. We show that a high velocity incoming soliton is split into a transmitted component and a reflected component. The transmitted mass (L^2 norm squared) is shown to be in good agreement with the quantum transmission rate of the delta function potential. We further show that the transmitted and reflected components resolve into solitons plus dispersive radiation, and quantify the mass and phase of these solitons.
This paper considers the question of global in time existence and asymptotic behavior of small-data solutions of nonlinear dispersive equations with a real potential $V$. The main concern is treating nonlinearities whose degree is low enough as to preclude the simple use of classical energy methods and decay estimates. In their place, we present a systematic approach that adapts the space-time resonance method to the non-Euclidean setting using the spectral theory of the Schroedinger operator $-Δ+V$. We start by developing tools of independent interest, namely multilinear analysis (Coifman-Mey…
Let $(M^\circ, g)$ be an asymptotically conic manifold, in the sense that $M^\circ$ compactifies to a manifold with boundary $M$ in such a way that $g$ becomes a scattering metric on $M$. A special case of particular interest is that of asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, where $\partial M = S^{n-1}$ and the induced metric at infinity is equal to the standard metric. We study the resolvent kernel $(P + k^2)^{-1}$ and Riesz transform of the operator $P = Δ_g + V$, where $Δ_g$ is the positive Laplacian associated to $g$ and $V$ is a real potential function $V$ that is smooth on $M$ and vanishes …
This paper is the first of a series regarding the Teukolsky equation of spin $\pm 1$ and spin $\pm 2$ on Kerr backgrounds in the full subextremal range of parameters $|a|<M$. In the present paper, we study fixed frequency solutions of the transformed system of equations introduced by Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski, obtaining estimates which are uniform in the separation parameters. A corollary of our result, to be laid out in the second paper of the series, is that solutions of the Teukolsky equation on subextremal Kerr arising from regular initial data remain bounded and decay in time. Thi…
We develop a definitive physical-space scattering theory for the scalar wave equation on Kerr exterior backgrounds in the general subextremal case |a|<M. In particular, we prove results corresponding to "existence and uniqueness of scattering states" and "asymptotic completeness" and we show moreover that the resulting "scattering matrix" mapping radiation fields on the past horizon and past null infinity to radiation fields on the future horizon and future null infinity is a bounded operator. The latter allows us to give a time-domain theory of superradiant reflection. The boundedness of the …
