Let f be a newform of weight at least 3 with Fourier coefficients in a number field K. We show that the universal deformation ring of the mod lambda Galois representation associated to f is unobstructed, and thus isomorphic to a power series ring in three variables over the Witt vectors, for all but finitely many primes lambda of K. We give an explicit bound on such lambda for the six known cusp forms of level 1, trivial character, and rational Fourier coefficients. We also prove a slightly weaker result for weight 2.
We prove, for many cuspidal automorphic representations for GSp(4), that the local obstructions to the deformation theory of the associated residual Galois representations generically vanish.
Let f be a newform of weight at least 2 and squarefree level with Fourier coefficients in a number field K. We give explicit bounds, depending on congruences of f with other newforms, on the set of primes lambda of K for which the deformation problem associated to the mod lambda Galois representation of f is obstructed. We include some explicit examples.
Consider the semisimple mod p reduction of the Galois representation associated to a Hilbert newform f by Carayol and Taylor. This paper discusses how, under certain conditions on f, the universal ring for deformations of this residual representation with fixed determinant is unobstructed for almost all primes. We follow the approach of Weston, who carried out a similar program for classical modular forms in 2004. As such, the problem essentially comes down to verifying that various local invariants vanish at all places dividing p or the level of the newform. We conclude with an explicit examp…
Let $F$ be a CM field and let $(\overline{r}_{π,λ})_λ$ be the compatible system of residual $\mathcal{G}_n$-valued representations of $\operatorname{Gal}_{F}$ attached to a RACSDC automorphic representation $π$ of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$, as studied by Clozel, Harris and Taylor and others. Under mild assumptions, we prove that the fixed-determinant universal deformation rings attached to $\overline{r}_{π,λ}$ are unobstructed for all places $λ$ in a subset of Dirichlet density $1$, continuing the investigations of Mazur, Weston and Gamzon. During the proof, we develop a general framew…
The deformation theory of ordinary representations of the absolute Galois groups of totally real number fields (over a finite field $k$) has been studied for a long time, starting with the work of Hida, Mazur and Tilouine, and continued by Wiles and others. Hida has studied the behaviour of these deformations when one considers the $p$-cyclotomic tower of extensions of the field. In the limit, one obtains a deformation ring $R_\infty$ classifying the ordinary deformations of the (Galois group of) the $p$-cyclotomic extension. We show that if $R_\infty$ is Noetherian and certain adjoint $μ$-inv…
For a newform $f=\sum a_n q^n$ of weight $k \geq 3$ and a prime $λ$ of $\mathbf{Q}(a_n)$, the deformation problem for its associated mod $λ$ Galois representation is unobstructed for all primes outside some finite set. Previous results gave an explicit bound on this finite set for $f$ of squarefree level; we modify this bound and remove the squarefree hypothesis. We also show that if the $λ$-adic deformation problem for $f$ is unobstructed, then $f$ is not congruent mod $λ$ to a newform of lower level.
Given a continuous, odd, semi-simple $2$-dimensional representation of $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$ over a finite field of odd characteristic $p$ and a prime $\ell$ not dividing $Np$, we study the relation between the universal deformation rings of the corresponding pseudo-representation for the groups $G_{\mathbb{Q},N\ell p}$ and $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$. As a related problem, we investigate when the universal pseudo-representation arises from an actual representation over the universal deformation ring. Under some hypotheses, we prove analogues of theorems of Boston and Böckle for the reduced pseudo-defor…
In this paper, we discuss the variation of the numbers of the isomorphic classes of stable lattices when the weight and the level varies in a Hida deformation by using the Kubota-Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-function. As a corollary, we give a sufficient condition for the numbers of the isomorphic classes of stable lattices in Hida deformation to be infinite.
We establish a duality result proving the `functional equation' of the characteristic ideal of the Selmer group associated to a nearly ordinary Hilbert modular form over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ extension of a totally real number field. Further, we use this result to establish a duality or algebraic `functional equation' for the `big' Selmer groups associated to the corresponding nearly ordinary Hida deformation. The multivariable cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for nearly ordinary Hida family of Hilbert modular forms is not established yet and this can be thought of as an evidence t…
Using $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_2)$ and an ordinary $R = \mathbb{T}$ theorem, we prove that the support of patched modules for quaternionic forms meet every irreducible component of the potentially semi-stable deformation ring. This gives a new proof of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture for 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_2$, which is new in the case $\overline{r}$ a twist of an extension of the trivial character by itself. As a consequence, a local restriction in Paškūnas' proof of Fontaine-Mazur conjecture…
We give a different approach to the well-known modularity lifting results of Wiles and Taylor. Instead of Taylor-Wiles systems we use a Galois cohomological discovery of R. Ramakrishna. This paper is 2 years older than math.NT/0210296 where another approach to modularity lifting results was presented.
From $p$-modular to $p$-adic Langlands correspondences for $\operatorname{U}(1,1)(\mathbb{Q}_{p^2}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$: deformations in the non-supercuspidal case
We introduce and study certain deformations of Drinfeld quasi-modular forms by using rigid analytic trivialisations of corresponding Anderson's t-motives. We show that a sub-algebra of these deformations has a natural graduation by the group Z^2 x Z/(q-1)Z and an homogeneous automorphism, and we deduce from this and other properties multiplicity estimates.
We prove the equality of several $τ$-recurrent sequences, which were first considered by Pellarin, and which have close connections to Drinfeld vectorial modular forms. Our result has several consequences: an $A$-expansion for the $l^\text{th}$ power ($1 \leq l \leq q$) of the deformation of the weight 2 Eisenstein series; relations between Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions; a new proof of relations between special values of Pellarin $L$-series.
Let G be a locally analytic group. We use deformation theory and Emerton's 'augmented' Iwasawa modules to study the possible liftings of a given absolutely irreducible smooth modular representation of G to a unitary Banach space representation. Final version. Some minor items changed. Appears in Israel J. Math.
Given a continuous, odd, reducible and semi-simple $2$-dimensional representation $\barρ_0$ of $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$ over a finite field of odd characteristic $p$, we study the relation between the universal deformation ring of the pseudo-representation corresponding to $\barρ_0$ (pseudo-deformation ring) and the big $p$-adic Hecke algebra to prove that the maximal reduced quotient of the pseudo-deformation ring is isomorphic to the local component of the big $p$-adic Hecke algebra corresponding to $\barρ_0$ if a certain global Galois cohomology group has dimension $1$. This partially extends th…
Let ρbe a modulo p representation of the absolute Galois group of a totally real number field. Under the assumptions that ρhas large image and admits a low weight crystalline modular deformation we show that any low weight crystalline deformation of ρunramified outside a finite set of primes will be modular. We follow the approach of Wiles as generalized by Fujiwara. The main new ingredient is an Ihara type lemma for the local component at ρof the middle degree cohomology of a Hilbert modular variety. As an application we relate the algebraic p-part of the value at 1 of the adjoint L-function …
We prove the existence of Euler systems for adjoint modular Galois representations using deformations of Galois representations coming from Hilbert modular forms and relate them to $p$-adic $L$-functions under a conjectural formula for the Fitting ideals of some equivariant congruence modules for abelian base change.
For a totally real number field $F$ and a nonarchimedean prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ lying above a prime number $p$ we introduce certain sheaf cohomology groups that intertwine the $\mathfrak{p}^{\infty}$-tower of a quaternionic Hilbert modular variety associated to a quaternion algebra $D$ over $F$ that is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and a $p$-adically admissible representation of $\mbox{PGL}_2(F_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Applied to infinitesimal $p$-adic deformations of the local factor at $\mathfrak{p}$ of a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $D^*(\mathbb{A})$ this yields a natural construction…
Under mild hypotheses on the residual representation, we prove the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras using a novel combination of the methods of Euler systems and Taylor-Wiles systems. We also prove the compatibility of this conjecture with specialization.
For a fixed mod $p$ automorphic Galois representation, $p$-adic automorphic Galois representations lifting it determine points in universal deformation space. In the case of modular forms and under some technical conditions, Böckle showed that every component of deformation space contains a smooth modular point, which then implies their Zariski density when coupled with the infinite fern of Gouvêa-Mazur. We generalize Böckle's result to the context of polarized Galois representations for CM fields, and to two dimensional Galois representations for totally real fields. More specifically, under …
We develop further the theory of $q$-deformations of real numbers introduced by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, and focus in particular on the class of real quadratic irrationals. Our key tool is a $q$-deformation of the modular group $PSL_q(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The action of the modular group by Möbius transformations commutes with the $q$-deformations. We prove that the traces of the elements of $PSL_q(2,\mathbb{Z})$ are palindromic polynomials with positive coefficients. These traces appear in the explicit expressions of the $q$-deformed quadratic irrationals.
Let~$X=\Po/Γ$ be an~$n$-punctured sphere, $n>3$. We introduce and study~$n-3$ deformation operators on the space of modular forms~$M_*(Γ)$ based on the classical theory of uniformizing differential equations and accessory parameters. When restricting to modular functions, we recover a construction in Teichmüller theory related to the deformation of the complex structure of~$X$. We describe the deformation operators in terms of derivations with respect to Eichler integrals of weight-four cusp forms, and in terms of vector-valued modular forms attached to extensions of symmetric tensor represent…
Based on our previous work on an arithmetic analogue of Christol's theorem, this paper studies in more detail the structure of the lambda-ring $E_K = K \otimes W_{O_K}^a (O_{\bar{K}})$ of algebraic Witt vectors for number fields $K$. First developing general results concerning $E_K$, we apply them to the case when $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field. The main results include the "modularity theorem" for algebraic Witt vectors, which claims that certain deformation families $f: M_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}) \times \mathfrak{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ of modular functions of finite level always defi…
There are many instances known when the Fourier coefficients of modular forms are congruent to partial sums of hypergeometric series. In our previous work arXiv:1803.01830, such partial sums are related to the radial asymptotics of infinite $q$-hypergeometric sums at roots of unity. Here we combine the two features to construct a hypergeometric $q$-deformation of two CM modular forms of weight 3 and discuss the corresponding $q$-congruences.
Certain objects of conformal field theory, for example partition functions on the rectangle and the torus, and one-point functions on the torus, are either invariant or transform simply under the modular group, properties which should be preserved under the $T\overline T$ deformation. The formulation and proof of this statement in fact extents to more general functions such as $T\overline T$ deformed modular and Jacobi forms. We show that the deformation acts simply on their Mellin transform, multiplying it by a universal entire function. Finally we show that Maass forms on the torus are eigen…
