We give a different approach to the well-known modularity lifting results of Wiles and Taylor. Instead of Taylor-Wiles systems we use a Galois cohomological discovery of R. Ramakrishna. This paper is 2 years older than math.NT/0210296 where another approach to modularity lifting results was presented.
We study the Zariski closure of points in local deformation rings corresponding to potential semi-stable representations with certain prescribed $p$-adic Hodge theoretic properties. We show in favourable cases that the closure is equal to a union of irreducible components of the deformation space. We also study an analogous question for global Hecke algebras.
We study the local factor at p of the semi-simple zeta function of a Shimura variety of Drinfeld type for a level structure given at p by the pro-unipotent radical of an Iwahori subgroup. Our method is an adaptation to this case of the Langlands-Kottwitz counting method. We use Hecke algebra isomorphisms to determine the test functions at p.
One of the basic questions in number theory is to determine semi-simple l-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field. In this paper, we discuss the question for two dimensional representations over a totally real number field.
Let $G$ denote a linear algebraic group over $\mathbf{Q}$ and $K$ and $L$ two number fields. Assume that there is a group isomorphism of points on $G$ over the finite adeles of $K$ and $L$, respectively. We establish conditions on the group $G$, related to the structure of its Borel groups, under which $K$ and $L$ have isomorphic adele rings. Under these conditions, if $K$ or $L$ is a Galois extension of $\mathbf{Q}$ and $G(\mathbf{A}_{K,f})$ and $G(\mathbf{A}_{L,f})$ are isomorphic, then $K$ and $L$ are isomorphic as fields. We use this result to show that if for two number fields $K$ and $L$…
This paper is a continuation of a previous paper in which the first two authors have introduced the spherical Hecke algebra and the Satake isomorphism for an untwisted affine Kac-Moody group over a non-archimedian local field. In this paper we develop the theory of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra associated to these same groups. The resulting algebra is shown to be closely related to Cherednik's double affine Hecke algebra. Furthermore, using these results, we give an explicit description of the affine Satake isomorphism, generalizing Macdonald's formula for the spherical function in the finite-dime…
We show that the Eigenvariety attached to Hilbert modular forms over a totally real field $F$ is smooth at the points corresponding to certain classical weight one theta series and we give a precise criterion for etaleness over the weight space at those points. In the case where the theta series has real multiplication, we construct a non-classical overconvergent generalised eigenform and compute its Fourier coefficients in terms of $p$-adic logarithms of algebraic numbers. Our approach uses deformations and pseudo-deformations of Galois representations.
In this article, we study the pseudo-isomorphism class of the dual fine Selmer group $X$ attached to a $p$-adic Galois deformation whose deformation ring $Λ$ is isomorphic to the ring of formal power series. By using the "Kolyvagin system" arising from a given Euler system $c$, we shall construct ideals $C_i(c)$ of $Λ$, and prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ approximate the higher Fitting ideals of $X$ under suitable hypothesis. In particular, we shall prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ arising from the Euler system of Beilinson-Kato elements determine the pseudo-isomorphism classes of the dual fine S…
We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.
Let $G$ be any connected reductive $p$-adic group. Let $K\subset G$ be any special parahoric subgroup and $V,V'$ be any two irreducible smooth $\overline {\mathbb F}_p[K]$-modules. The main goal of this article is to compute the image of the Hecke bi-module $\operatorname{End}_{\overline {\mathbb F}_p[K]}(\operatorname{c-Ind}_K^G V, \operatorname{c-Ind}_K^G V')$ by the generalized Satake transform and to give an explicit formula for its inverse, using the pro-$p$ Iwahori Hecke algebra of $G$. This immediately implies the "change of weight theorem" in the proof of the classification of mod $p$ …
We introduce a derived enhancement of local Galois deformation rings that we call the "spectral Hecke algebra", in analogy to a construction in the Geometric Langlands program. This is a Hecke algebra that acts on the spectral side of the Langlands correspondence, i.e. on moduli spaces of Galois representations. We verify the simplest form of derived local-global compatibility between the action of the spectral Hecke algebra on the derived Galois deformation ring of Galatius-Venkatesh, and the action of Venkatesh's derived Hecke algebra on the cohomology of arithmetic groups.
We study the center of the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke ring H of a connected split p-adic reductive group G. For k an algebraically closed field with characteristic p, we prove that the center of the k-algebra H_k:= H\otimes_Z k contains an affine semigroup algebra which is naturally isomorphic to the Hecke algebra attached to any irreducible smooth k-representation of a given hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of G. This isomorphism is obtained using the inverse Satake isomorphism constructed in arXiv:1207.5557. We apply this to classify the simple supersingular H_k-modules, study the supersingula…
We generalize a result of Galatius and Venkatesh which relates the graded module of cohomology of locally symmetric spaces to the graded homotopy ring of the derived Galois deformation rings, by removing certain assumptions, and in particular by allowing congruences inside the localized Hecke algebra.
Using the modularity technique of Wiles, we study the Hecke algebra of weight 2 and prime level N localized at the Eisenstein primes. On the way, we recover some results of Mazur ("Modular Curves and the Eisenstein Ideal") from a deformation theoretic point of view. Combining some of our results with a theorem of Merel, we obtain new information about the p-part of the class groups of Q(N^(1/p)), where p and N are prime, and N = 1 mod p.
Given a continuous, odd, reducible and semi-simple $2$-dimensional representation $\barρ_0$ of $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$ over a finite field of odd characteristic $p$, we study the relation between the universal deformation ring of the pseudo-representation corresponding to $\barρ_0$ (pseudo-deformation ring) and the big $p$-adic Hecke algebra to prove that the maximal reduced quotient of the pseudo-deformation ring is isomorphic to the local component of the big $p$-adic Hecke algebra corresponding to $\barρ_0$ if a certain global Galois cohomology group has dimension $1$. This partially extends th…
In his work on modularity theorems, Wiles proved a numerical criterion for a map of rings $R\to T$ to be an isomorphism of complete intersections. He used this to show that certain deformation rings and Hecke algebras associated to a mod $p$ Galois representation at non-minimal level were isomorphic and complete intersections, provided the same was true at minimal level. In this paper we study Hecke algebras acting on cohomology of Shimura curves arising from maximal orders in indefinite quaternion algebras over the rationals localized at a semistable irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation …
We continue our study of the Wiles defect of deformation rings $R$ and Hecke rings $T$ (at a newform $f$) acting on the cohomology of Shimura curves. The Wiles defect at an augmentation $λ_f:T \to O$ measures the failure of $R,T$ to be complete intersections locally at $λ_f$. In situations we study here the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method gives an isomorphism $R=T$ without the rings being complete intersections. Using novel arguments in commutative algebra and patching, we generalize significantly and give different proofs of our earlier results that compute the Wiles defect at $λ_f: R=T \t…
Let $G$ be a split connected reductive group over a finite field of characteristic $p > 2$ such that $G_\text{der}$ is absolutely almost simple. We give a geometric construction of perverse $\mathbb{F}_p$-sheaves on the Iwahori affine flag variety of $G$ which are central with respect to the convolution product. We deduce an explicit formula for an isomorphism from the spherical mod $p$ Hecke algebra to the center of the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. We also give a formula for the central integral Bernstein elements in the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. To accomplish these goals we construct …
For the group PSL(2,Z) it is known that there is an isomorphism between polynomial eigenfunctions of the transfer operator for the geodesic flow and the Eichler cohomology in the theory of modular forms. In a recent paper by Chang and Mayer it is indicated that such an isomorphism exists as well for certain subgroups of PSL(2,Z). We prove this and provide some evidence by computer aided algebraic calculations that such an isomorphism exists for all principal congruence subgroups and all congruence subgroups of Hecke type.
We propose a formulation of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for modular motives with coefficients in universal deformation rings and Hecke algebras; something which seems to have been heretofore missing because the complexes of Galois cohomology required were not known to be perfect. We show that the fundamental line of this conjecture satisfies the expected compatibility property at geometric points (more precisely at the points satisfying the Weight-Monodromy conjecture) and is compatible with level-lowering and level-raising. Combining these properties with the methods of Euler a…
We extend the Jacquet-Langlands'correspondence between the Hecke-modules of usual and quaternionic modular forms, to overconvergent p-adic forms of finite slope. We show that this correspondence respects p-adic families and is induced by an isomorphism between some associated eigencurves.
