Let ρbe a modulo p representation of the absolute Galois group of a totally real number field. Under the assumptions that ρhas large image and admits a low weight crystalline modular deformation we show that any low weight crystalline deformation of ρunramified outside a finite set of primes will be modular. We follow the approach of Wiles as generalized by Fujiwara. The main new ingredient is an Ihara type lemma for the local component at ρof the middle degree cohomology of a Hilbert modular variety. As an application we relate the algebraic p-part of the value at 1 of the adjoint L-function associated to a Hilbert modular newform to the cardinality of the corresponding Selmer group.
A key ingredient in the Taylor-Wiles proof of Fermat last theorem is the classical Ihara's lemma which is used to rise the modularity property between some congruent galoisian representations. In their work on Sato-Tate, Clozel-Harris-Taylor proposed a generalization of the Ihara's lemma in higher dimension for some similitude groups. The main aim of this paper is then to prove some new instances of this generalized Ihara's lemma by considering some particular non pseudo Eisenstein maximal ideals of unramified Hecke algebras. As a consequence, we prove a level rising statement.
The goal of this paper is to reformulate the conjectural "Ihara lemma" for $U(n)$ in terms of the local Langlands correspondence in families $\tildeπ_Σ(\cdot)$, as currently being developed by Emerton and Helm. The reformulation roughly takes the following form. Suppose we are given an irreducible mod $\ell$ Galois representation $\bar{r}$, which is modular of full level (and small weight), and a finite set of places $Σ$ -- none of which divide $\ell$. Then $\tildeπ_Σ(r)$ exists, and has a global realization as a natural module of algebraic modular forms, where $r$ is the universal $Σ$-deforma…
We prove a version of Ihara's Lemma for degree q=1,2 cuspidal cohomology of the symmetric space attached to automorphic forms of arbitrary weight (k\geq 2) over an imaginary quadratic field with torsion (prime power) coefficients. This extends an earlier result of the author which concerned the case k=2, q=1. Our method here is different and uses results of Diamond and Blasius-Franke-Grunewald. We discuss the relationship of our main theorem to the problem of the existence of level-raising congruences.
An analogue over imaginary quadratic fields of a result in algebraic number theory known as Ihara's lemma is established. More precisely, we show that for a prime ideal P of the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field F, the kernel of the sum of the two standard P-degeneracy maps between the cuspidal sheaf cohomology H^1_!(X_0, M_0)^2 --> H^1_!(X_1, M_1) is Eisenstein. Here X_0 and X_1 are analogues over F of the modular curves X_0(N) and X_0(Np), respectively. To prove our theorem we use the method of modular symbols and the congruence subgroup property for the group SL(2) which is d…
Persistence of non-degeneracy is a phenomenon which appears in the theory of $\overline{\mathbb Q}_l$-representations of the linear group: every irreducible submodule of the restriction to the mirabolic sub-representation of a non-degenerate irreducible representation is non-degenerate. This is not true anymore in general, if we look at the modulo $l$ reduction of some stable lattice. As in the Clozel-Harris-Taylor generalization of global Ihara's lemma, we show that this property, called non-degeneracy persistence and related to the notion of essentially absolutely irreducible and generic rep…
The object of this work is to present the status of art of an open problem: to provide an analogue for Shimura curves of the Ihara's lemma \cite{Ihara73} which holds for modular curves. We will describe our direct result towards the "Problem of Ihara" and we will present some possible approaches to it, giving a formulation of our conjecture in terms of congruence subgroup problem for quaternion algebras. Since some modular forms can be reinterpreted as elements of the cohomology of Shimura curves, we will describe a consequence of the "Problem of Ihara" about congruence modules of modular form…
Following Bertolini and Darmon's method, with "Ihara's lemma" among other conditions Longo and Wang proved one divisibility of Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular forms of weight $2$ and general low parallel weight respectively. In this paper, we remove the "Ihara's lemma" condition in their results.
We study the motivic cohomology of the special fiber of quaternionic Shimura varieties at a prime of good reduction. We exhibit classes in these motivic cohomology groups and use this to give an explicit geometric realization of level raising between Hilbert modular forms. The main ingredient for our construction is a form of Ihara's Lemma for compact quaternionic Shimura surfaces which we prove by generalizing a method of Diamond-Taylor. Along the way we also verify the Hecke orbit conjecture for these quaternionic Shimura varieties which is a key input for our proof of Ihara's Lemma.
Let $F$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Let $W(k)$ denote the Witt vectors of an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $\ell$ different from $p$ and $2$, and let $\mathcal{Z}$ be the spherical Hecke algebra for $GL_n(F)$ over $W(k)$. Given a Hecke character $λ:\mathcal{Z}\to R$, where $R$ is an arbitrary $W(k)$-algebra, we introduce the universal unramified module $\mathcal{M}_{λ,R}$. We show $\mathcal{M}_{λ,R}$ embeds in its Whittaker space and is flat over $R$, resolving a conjecture of Lazarus. It follows that $\mathcal{M}_{λ,k}$ has the same semisimplification as any un…
We prove a gluing lemma for sections of line bundles on a rigid analytic variety. We apply the lemma, in conjunction with a result of Buzzard's, to give a proof of (a generalization) of Coleman's theorem which states that overconvergent modular forms of small slope are classical. The proof is "geometric" in nature, and is suitable for generalization to other PEL Shimura varieties.
We prove a character formula for some closed fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We apply it to compute fixed points for fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties arising from the basic loci of Shimura varieties of Coxeter type. As an application, we prove an arithmetic intersection formula for certain diagonal cycles on unitary and GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. In particular, we prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma in the minuscule case, without assumptions on the residual characteristic.
We fix $\ell$ a prime and let $M$ be an integer such that $\ell\not|M$; let $f\in S_2(Γ_1(M\ell^2))$ be a newform supercuspidal of fixed type related to the nebentypus, at $\ell$ and special at a finite set of primes. Let $\TT^ψ$ be the local quaternionic Hecke algebra associated to $f$. The algebra $\TT^ψ$ acts on a module $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ coming from the cohomology of a Shimura curve. Applying the Taylor-Wiles criterion and a recent Savitt's theorem, $\TT^ψ$ is the universal deformation ring of a global Galois deformation problem associated to $\orho_f$. Moreover $\mathcal M^ψ_f$ is free of …
Clozel and Labesse proved the base change fundamental lemma for spherical Hecke algebras attached to an unramified group over a p-adic field. This paper proves an analogous fundamental lemma for centers of parahoric Hecke algebras attached to the same class of groups. This provides an ingredient needed for the author's program to study Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at p.
Let $K$ be a number field, $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field, and let $V$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 2$. Let $Z_K$ be a union of varieties defined over $K$ such that $V \nsubseteq Z_K$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $V \setminus Z_K$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of the height of $V$ and the degree of a hypersurface containing $Z_K$, where dependence on both is optimal. This generalizes and improves upon the previous results of the author. As a part…
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and $q$-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the $σ$-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.
This work is the first part in a series of three dedicated to the foundations of integral aspects of Shimura varieties and of Fontaine's categories. It deals mostly with the unramified context of (arbitrary) mixed characteristic (0,p). Among the topics covered we mention: the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate theory of ordinary p-divisible groups and of their canonical lifts, the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate-Dwork-Katz theory of (crystalline) coordinates for ordinary abelian varieties, the strong form of the generalized Manin problem, global deformations in the generaliz…
Let $G$ be an unramified group over a $p$-adic field. This article introduces a base change homomorphism for Bernstein centers of depth-zero principal series blocks for $G$ and proves the corresponding base change fundamental lemma. This result is used in the approach to Shimura varieties with $Γ_1(p)$-level structure initiated by M. Rapoport and the author in [HR2].
We introduce a twisted relative trace formula which simultaneously generalizes the twisted trace formula of Langlands et.al. (in the quadratic case) and the relative trace formula of Jacquet and Lai. Certain matching statements relating this twisted relative trace formula to a relative trace formula are also proven (including the relevant undamental lemma in the "biquadratic case"). Using recent work of Jacquet, Lapid and their collaborators and the Rankin-Selberg integral representation of the Asai $L$-function (obtained by Flicker using the theory of Jacquet, Piatetskii-Shapiro, and Shalika)…
