This work is the first part in a series of three dedicated to the foundations of integral aspects of Shimura varieties and of Fontaine's categories. It deals mostly with the unramified context of (arbitrary) mixed characteristic (0,p). Among the topics covered we mention: the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate theory of ordinary p-divisible groups and of their canonical lifts, the generalization of the classical Serre-Tate-Dwork-Katz theory of (crystalline) coordinates for ordinary abelian varieties, the strong form of the generalized Manin problem, global deformations in the generalized Shimura context, Dieudonné's theories (reobtained, simplified and extended), the main list of stratifications of special fibres of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties of preabelian type, the uniqueness of such models in mixed characteristic (0,2), the existence (in many situations) of such models in mixed characteristic (0,2), steps towards the classification of Shimura p-divisible groups over algebraically closed field of characteristic p (like the boundedness principle, the purity principle, Bruhat decompositions in the F-context, etc.), generalized Serre lemma, connections in Fontaine's categories, etc.
We prove the existence of weak integral canonical models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type in arbitrary unramified mixed characteristic $(0,p)$. As a first application we solve a conjecture of Langlands for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. As a second application we prove the existence of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties of preabelian (resp. of abelian) type in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with $p\Ge 3$ (resp. with $p=2$) and with respect to hyperspecial subgroups; if $p=3$ (resp. if $p=2$) we restrict in this part I either to the $A_n$, $C_n$, $D_n^{\dbH}$ (resp. $A_n$ and $C_n…
In this paper, we give a notion of the potentially good reduction locus of a Shimura variety. It consists of the points which should be related with motives having potentially good reductions in some sense. We show the existence of such locus for a Shimura variety of preabelian type. Further, we construct a partition of the adic space associated to a Shimura variety of preabelian type, which is expected to describe degenerations of motives. Using this partition, we prove that the cohomology of the potentially good reduction locus is isomorphic to the cohomology of a Shimura variety up to non-s…
We extend the results of Kottwitz on points of Shimura varieties over finite fields to cases of bad reduction. The "test function" whose twisted orbital integrals appear in the final expression is defined geometrically using deformation spaces of p-divisible groups.
We extend to large contexts pertaining to Shimura varieties of Hodge type a result of Zink on the existence of lifts to characteristic 0 of suitable representatives of certain isogeny classes of abelian varieties endowed with Frobenius and other endomorphisms over $\dbF_{p^q}$, whose $p$-divisible groups in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ are with complex multiplication.
A p-divisible group, or more generally an F-crystal, is said to be Hodge-Newton reducible if its Hodge polygon passes through a break point of its Newton polygon. Katz proved that Hodge-Newton reducible F-crystals admit a canonical filtration called the Hodge-Newton filtration. The notion of Hodge-Newton reducibility plays an important role in the deformation theory of p-divisible groups; the key property is that the Hodge-Newton filtration of a p-divisible group over a field of characteristic p can be uniquely lifted to a filtration of its deformation. We generalize Katz's result to F-crystal…
Starting from our work on Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of finite flat group schemes over a $p$-adic field, we developp a theory of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations for $p$-divisible groups. We apply this to the study of the geometry of period morphisms for Rapoport-Zink spaces and to the $p$-adic geometry of Shimura varieties. We define and study in particular some fundamental domains for the action of Hecke correspondences.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0. We prove the existence of ascending and descending slope filtrations for Shimura p-divisible objects over k. We use them to classify rationally these objects over \bar k. Among geometric applications, we mention two. First we formulate Manin problems for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We solve them if either p\Ge 3 or p=2 and two mild conditions hold. Second we formulate integral Manin problems. We solve them for certain Shimura varieties of PEL type.
For several Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction in characteristic $p$, we show that the cone of weights of automorphic forms is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink-Wedhorn-Ziegler. This establishes several instances of a general conjecture formulated in previous papers by the authors. Furthermore, we prove in these cases that any mod $p$ automorphic form whose weight lies in a specific region of the weight space is divisible by a partial Hasse invariant. This generalizes to other Shimura varieties previous results of Diamond--Kassaei on Hilbert modular forms.
In this paper we study the supersingular locus of the reduction modulo p of the Shimura variety for GU(1,s) in the case of an inert prime p. Using Dieudonné theory we define a stratification of the corresponding moduli space of p-divisible groups. We describe the incidence relation of this stratification in terms of the Bruhat-Tits building of a unitary group. In the case of GU(1,2), we show that the supersingular locus is equi-dimensional of dimension 1 and is of complete intersection. We give an explicit description of the irreducible components and their intersection behaviour.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Let $c,d,m$ be positive integers. Let $D$ be a $p$-divisible group of codimension $c$ and dimension $d$ over $k$. Let $\scrD$ be a versal deformation of $D$ over a smooth $k$-scheme $\scrA$ which is equidimensional of dimension $cd$. We show that there exists a reduced, locally closed subscheme $\grs_D(m)$ of $\scrA$ that has the following property: a point $y\in\scrA(k)$ belongs to $\grs_D(m)(k)$ if and only if $y^*(\scrD)[p^m]$ is isomorphic to $D[p^m]$. We prove that $\grs_D(m)$ is {\it regular and equidimensional} of {\it di…
Kisin and Pappas constructed integral models of Hodge-type Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at $p>2$, such that the formal neighbourhood of a mod~$p$ point can be interpreted as a deformation space of $p$-divisible group with some Tate cycles (generalising Faltings' construction). In this paper, we study the central leaf and the closed Newton stratum in the formal neighbourhoods of mod~$p$ points of Kisin-Pappas integral models with parahoric level structure; namely, we obtain the dimension of central leaves and the almost product structure of Newton strata. In the case of hype…
We study $p$-divisible groups $G$ endowed with an action of the ring of integers of a finite (possibly ramified) extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ over a scheme of characteristic $p$. We suppose moreover that the $p$-divisible group $G$ satisfies the Pappas-Rapoport condition for a certain datum $μ$ ; this condition consists in a filtration on the sheaf of differentials $ω_G$ satisfying certain properties. Over a perfect field, we define the Hodge and Newton polygons for such $p$-divisible groups, normalized with the action. We show that the Newton polygon lies above the Hodge polygon, itself lying …
In this article, we prove results about the cohomology of compact unitary group Shimura varieties at split places. In nonendoscopic cases, we are able to give a full description of the cohomology, after restricting to integral Hecke operators at p on the automorphic side. We allow arbitrary ramification at p; even the PEL data may be ramified. This gives a description of the semisimple local Hasse-Weil zeta function in these cases. We also treat cases of nontrivial endoscopy. For this purpose, we give a general stabilization of the expression given in previous work, following the stabilization…
We use E. Lau's classification of 2-divisible groups using Dieudonné displays to construct integral canonical models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at 2-adic places where the level is hyperspecial. We apply this to prove the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces in characteristic 2.
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $(R,\ideal{m})$ be a regular local ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and absolute index of ramification $e$. We provide general criteria of when each abelian scheme over $\Spec R\setminus\{\ideal{m}\}$ extends to an abelian scheme over $\Spec R$. We show that such extensions always exist if $e\le p-1$, exist in most cases if $p\le e\le 2p-3$, and do not exist in general if $e\ge 2p-2$. The case $e\le p-1$ implies the uniqueness of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties over a discrete valuation ring $O$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and index of ramificatio…
We prove that, for a $p$-divisible group with additional structures over a complete valuation ring of rank one $O_K$ with mixed characteristic $(0,p)$, if the Newton polygon and the Hodge polygon of its special fiber possess a non trivial contact point, which is a break point for the Newton polygon, then it admits a "Hodge-Newton filtration" over $O_K$. The proof is based on the theories of Harder-Narasimhan filtration of finite flat group schemes and admissible filtered isocrystals. We then apply this result to the study of some larger class of Rapoport-Zink spaces and Shimura varieties than …
