Let the special linear group $G := SL_{2}$ act regularly on a $Q$-factorial variety $X$. Consider a maximal torus $T \subset G$ and its normalizer $N \subset G$. We prove: If $U \subset X$ is a maximal open $N$-invariant subset admitting a good quotient $U \to U // N$ with a divisorial quotient space, then the intersection $W(U)$ of all translates $g \dot U$ is open in $X$ and admits a good quotient $W(U) \to W(U) // G$ with a divisorial quotient space. Conversely, we obtain that every maximal open $G$-invariant subset $W \subset X$ admitting a good quotient $W \to W // G$ with a divisorial quotient space is of the form $W = W(U)$ for some maximal open $N$-invariant $U$ as above.
We generalize the classical Hilbert-Mumford criteria for GIT (semi-)stability in terms of one parameter subgroups of a linearly reductive group G over a field k, to the relative situation of an equivariant, projective morphism X -> Spec A to a noetherian k-algebra A. We also extend the classical projectivity result for GIT quotients: the induced morphism X^ss/G -> Spec A^G is projective. As an example of applications to moduli problems, we consider degenerations of Hilbert schemes of points.
In this paper, we prove that the notions of Hilbert stability and Mumford stability agree for vector bundles of arbitrary rank over smooth curves. The notion of Hilbert stability was introduced by Gieseker and Morrison in 1984, and they showed that for smooth curves and vector bundles of rank two it agrees with Mumford stability. A different proof for the rank two case was given by M. Teixidor i Bigas. Our proof uses a new approach and avoids complicated computations. Our results might serve as a first step in the construction of the Hilbert stable compactification of the universal moduli spac…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of null characteristic and $p(z)$ a Hilbert polynomial. We look for the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_{p(z)}$ of closed subschemes of projective spaces over $K$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$. Experimental evidences led us to consider the idea that $m_{p(z)}$ could be achieved by schemes having a suitable minimal Hilbert function. We give a constructive proof of this fact. Moreover, we are able to compute the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_p(z)^{\varrho}$ of schemes with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$ and given regularity $\varrho$ of …
We provide a Hilbert-Mumford Criterion for actions of reductive groups $G$ on $Q$-factorial complex varieties. The result allows to construct open subsets admitting a good quotient by $G$ from certain maximal open subsets admitting a good quotient by a maximal torus of $G$. As an application, we show how to obtain all invariant open subsets with good quotient for a given $G$-action on a complete $Q$-factorial toric variety.
Suppose $F\colon \mathcal{D}(X)\to \mathcal{T}$ is an exact functor from the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety $X$ to a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. If $F$ possesses left and right adjoints, then the Bondal-Orlov criterion gives a simple way of determining if $F$ is fully faithful. We prove a natural extension to the case when $X$ is a smooth and proper DM stack with projective coarse moduli space.
We prove by Hilbert-Mumford criterion that a slope stable polarized weighted pointed nodal curve is Chow asymptotic stable. This generalizes the result of Caporaso on stability of polarized nodal curves, and of Hasset on weighted pointed stable curves polarized by the weighted dualizing sheaves. It also solved a question raised by Mumford and Gieseker to prove the Chow asymptotic stability of stable nodal curves by Hilbert-Mumford criterion.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Hilbert coefficients are given in terms of the arithmetic degree (if the ring is reduced) or in terms of the defining degrees. From this it follows that there exists only a finite number of Hilbert functions associated to reduced algebras over an algebraically closed field with a given arithmetic degree and dimension. A good bound is also given for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of initial ideals which depends neither on term orders nor on the coordinates, and holds for any field.
We make a systematic study of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for different notions of stability for polarised algebraic varieties $(X,L)$; in particular for K- and Chow stability. For each type of stability this leads to a concept of slope $μ$ for varieties and their subschemes; if $(X,L)$ is semistable then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all $Z\subset X$. We give examples such as curves, canonical models and Calabi-Yaus. We prove various foundational technical results towards understanding the converse, leading to partial results; in particular this gives a geometric (rather than combinatorial) proof of th…
Consider a compact Lie group and a closed subgroup. Generalizing a result of Klyachko, we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for a coadjoint orbit of the subgroup to be contained in the projection of a given coadjoint orbit of the ambient group. The criterion is couched in terms of the ``relative'' Schubert calculus of the flag varieties of the two groups.
For a field k, let G be a reductive k-group and V an affine k-variety on which G acts. Using the notion of cocharacter-closed G(k)-orbits in V, we prove a rational version of the celebrated Hilbert-Mumford Theorem from geometric invariant theory. We initiate a study of applications stemming from this rationality tool. A number of examples are discussed to illustrate the concept of cocharacter-closure and to highlight how it differs from the usual Zariski-closure. When k is perfect, we give a criterion in terms of closed orbits for G to be k-anisotropic, answering a question of Borel.
The notion of regularity has been used by S. Kleiman in the construction of bounded families of ideals or sheaves with given Hilbert polynomial, a crucial point in the construction of Hilbert or Picard scheme. In a related direction, Kleiman proved that if I is an equidimensional reduced ideal in a polynomial ring S over an algebraically closed field, then the coefficients of the Hilbert polynomial of R = S/I can be bounded by the dimension and the multiplicity of R. Srinivas and Trivedi proved that the corresponding result does not hold for a local domain. However, they proved that there exis…
In this paper, we consider $\mathbb{Z}^{r}-$graded modules on the $\mathrm{Cl}(X)$ $-$graded Cox ring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},\dotsc,x_{r}]$ of a smooth complete toric variety $X$. Using the theory of Klyachko filtrations in the reflexive case, we construct a collection of lattice polytopes codifying the multigraded Hilbert function of the module. We apply this approach to reflexive $\mathbb{Z}^{s+r+2}$-graded modules over non-standard bigraded polynomial rings $\mathbb{C}[x_{0},\dotsc,x_{s},y_{0},\dotsc,y_{r}]$. In this case, we give sharp bounds for the multigraded regularity index of their multig…
Given an action of a reductive group on a normal variety, we construct all invariant open subsets admitting a good quotient with a quasiprojective or a divisorial quotient space. Our approach extends known constructions like Mumford's Geometric Invariant Theory. We obtain several new Hilbert-Mumford type theorems, and we extend a projectivity criterion of Bialynicki-Birula and Swiecicka for varieties with semisimple group action from the smooth to the singular case.
The criterion for an affine primary algebra over the field to be integral, is proven. Using this criterion we give a simple proof that Hilbert scheme of 0-dimensional subschemes of length $l$ of nonsingular $d$-dimensional algebraic variety is reduced for all $d$ and $l$.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a tame proper Deligne-Mumford stack of the form $[M/G]$ where $M$ is a scheme and $G$ is an algebraic group. We prove that the stack $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ of twisted stable maps is a quotient stack and can be embedded into a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack. When $G$ is finite, we give a more precise construction of $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ using Hilbert schemes and admissible $G$-covers.
We provide a criterion for when Hilbert squares of complex projective K3 surfaces with Picard number one are strongly ambiguous. This criterion is the same as [DM, Proposition 3.14], but is obtained by a different method. In particular, this enables us to compute the automorphism groups of these Hilbert squares from a different point of view with respect to [BCNS].
The generalisation of the well-known (Hilbert polynomial) criterion for flatness of a projective morphism of Noetherian schemes is given for the case of nonreduced base of the morphism.
A theorem by Mumford implies that every automorphic line bundle on a pure open Shimura variety, equipped with an invariant smooth metric, can be uniquely extended as a line bundle on a toroidal compactification of the variety, in such a way that the metric acquires only logarithmic singularities. This result is the key of being able to compute arithmetic intersection numbers from these line bundles. Hence it is natural to ask whether Mumford's result remains valid for line bundles on mixed Shimura varieties. In this paper we examine the simplest case, namely the sheaf of Jacobi forms on the un…
We provide a criterion for when Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces are birational. In particular, this allows us to generate a plethora of examples of non-birational Hilbert schemes which are derived equivalent.
Based on the Cayley, Grothendieck, Knudsen Mumford theory of determinants we extend the CM polarization to the Hilbert scheme. We identify the weight of this refined line bundle with the generalized Futaki invariant of Donaldson. We are able to conclude that CM stability implies K-Stability. An application of the Grothendieck Riemann Roch Theorem shows that this refined sheaf is isomorphic to the CM polarization introduced by Tian in 1994 on any closed, simply connected base .
The Schmidt Subspace Theorem affirms that the solutions of some particular system of diophantine approximations in projective spaces accumulates on a finite number of proper linear subspaces. Given a subvariety $X$ of a projective space $P^n$, does there exists a system of diophantine approximations on $P^n$ whose solutions are Zariski dense in $P^n$, but lie in finitely many proper subvarieties of $X$? One can gain insight into this problem using a theorem of G. Faltings and G. Wüstholz. Their construction requires the hypothesis that the sum of some expected values has to be large. This sum …
For a smooth, projective, complex algebraic variety $X$, the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence establishes a complex analytic isomorphism between the `Betti moduli space' of rank $n$ local systems on $X^\mathrm{an}$ and the `de Rham moduli space' of rank $n$ vector bundles with flat connection on $X$. In the rank one case, C. Simpson precisely characterizes the subvarieties of these moduli spaces that are `bi-algebraic' for this typically transcendental, analytic isomorphism. In this short note, we give a new proof of this characterization of Simpson, using methods from o-minimal geometry. We ad…
We study linear actions of algebraic groups on smooth projective varieties X. A guiding goal for us is to understand the cohomology of "quotients" under such actions, by generalizing (from reductive to non-reductive group actions) existing methods involving Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). We concentrate on actions of unipotent groups H, and define sets of stable points X^s and semistable points X^{ss}, often explicitly computable via the methods of reductive GIT, which reduce to the standard definitions due to Mumford in the case of reductive actions. We compare these with definiti…
We prove a general criterion for an algebraic stack to admit a good moduli space. This result may be considered as a weak analog of the Keel-Mori theorem, which guarantees the existence of a coarse moduli space for a separated Deligne-Mumford stack. We apply our result to prove that the moduli stacks of A_k and A_k^+-stable curves admit good moduli spaces. In forthcoming work, we will prove that these moduli spaces are projective and use them to construct the second flip in the log minimal model program for M_g.
Let $U$ be a maximal unipotent subgroup of a connected semisimple group $G$ and $U'$ the derived group of $U$. If $X$ is an affine $G$-variety, then the algebra of $U'$-invariants, $k[X]^U'$, is finitely generated and the quotient morphism $π: X \to X//U'$ is well-defined. In this article, we study properties of such quotient morphisms, e.g. the property that all the fibres of $π$ are equidimensional. We also establish an analogue of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for the null-cones with respect to $U'$-invariants.
Let X be a scheme that does not satisfy the valuative criterion of separatedness. We show that the Hilbert functor parametrizing closed families of X that are flat, finite and of rank one is not represented by a scheme or an algebraic space.
In this paper, we give new explicit representations of the Hilbert scheme of $μ$ points in $\PP^{r}$ as a projective subvariety of a Grassmanniann variety. This new explicit description of the Hilbert scheme is simpler than the previous ones and global. It involves equations of degree $2$. We show how these equations are deduced from the commutation relations characterizing border bases. Next, we consider infinitesimal perturbations of an input system of equations on this Hilbert scheme and describe its tangent space. We propose an effective criterion to test if it is a flat deformation, that …
We study Hilbert functions of certain non-reduced schemes A supported at finite sets of points in projective space, in particular, fat point schemes. We give combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds for the Hilbert function of A using nothing more than the multiplicities of the points and information about which subsets of the points are linearly dependent. When N=2, we give these bounds explicitly and we give a sufficient criterion for the upper and lower bounds to be equal. When this criterion is satisfied, we give both a simple formula for the Hilbert function and combinatorially defi…
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a graded ring is an important invariant in computational commutative algebra, and there is increasing interest in multigraded generalizations. We study connections between two recent definitions of multigraded regularity with a view towards a better understanding of the multigraded Hilbert function of fat point schemes in P^{n_1} x ... x P^{n_k}.
