Given an action of a reductive group on a normal variety, we construct all invariant open subsets admitting a good quotient with a quasiprojective or a divisorial quotient space. Our approach extends known constructions like Mumford's Geometric Invariant Theory. We obtain several new Hilbert-Mumford type theorems, and we extend a projectivity criterion of Bialynicki-Birula and Swiecicka for varieties with semisimple group action from the smooth to the singular case.
The main goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Weil and Cartier $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors coincide for $V$-manifolds and give a procedure to express a rational Weil divisor as a rational Cartier divisor. The theory is illustrated on weighted projective spaces and weighted blow-ups.

We introduce and develop the theory of Newton nondegenerate local Weil divisors $(X,0)$ in toric affine varieties. We characterize in terms of the toric combinatorics of the Newton diagram different properties of such singular germs: normality, Gorenstein property, or being an Cartier divisor in the ambient space. We generalize the intersection theory of nef toric (Weil) b-divisors on smooth and complete toric varieties to the case of smooth and complete toroidal embeddings. As a key ingredient we show the existence of a limit measure, supported on the weakly embedded rational conical polyhedral space attached to the toroidal embedding, which arises as a limit of discrete measures defined via tropical intersection theory on the polyhedral space. Double planes branched in 6 lines give a famous example of K3 surfaces. Their moduli are well understood and related to abelian fourfolds of Weil type. We compare these two moduli interpretations and in particular divisors on the moduli spaces. On the K3 side, this is achieved with the help of elliptic fibrations. We also study the Kuga-Satake correspondence on these special divisors.
We characterize contractible curves on proper normal algebraic surfaces in terms of complementary Weil divisors. Using this we generalize the classical criteria of Castelnuovo and Artin. As application we derive a finiteness result on homogeneous spectra defined by Weil divisors on surfaces.
We introduce a notion of volume of a normal isolated singularity that generalizes Wahl's characteristic number of surface singularities to arbitrary dimensions. We prove a basic monotonicity property of this volume under finite morphisms. We draw several consequences regarding the existence of non-invertible finite endomorphisms fixing an isolated singularity. In this paper, we investigate the explicit birational geometry for projective $ε$-lc varieties polarised by nef and big Weil divisors. We show that if $X$ is a projective $ε$-lc variety, $H$ is a nef and big Weil divisor with $\dim\overline{φ_{H}(X)}\geq n-1$ and $L$ is an effective Weil divisor such that $|L-K_X|\neq \emptyset$ or $L-K_X$ is nef, then we can find an explicit lower bound of $\text{vol}(H)$ and prove that $|L+m^\prime H|$ is birational for $m^\prime\geq m$, where $m$ is an explicit number which depends only on $n$ and $ε$. In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $ε$-lc singularities for $ε>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,ε$. Smooth surfaces have finitely generated canonical rings and projective canonical models. For normal surfaces, however, the graded ring of multicanonical sections is possibly nonnoetherian, such that the corresponding homogeneous spectrum is noncompact. I construct a canonical compactification by adding finitely many non-Q-Gorenstein points at infinity, provided that each Weil divisor is numerically equivalent to a Q-Cartier divisor. Similar results hold for arbitrary Weil divisors instead of the canonical class.
Using the language of polyhedral divisors and divisorial fans we describe invariant divisors on normal varieties X which admit an effective codimension one torus action. In this picture X is given by a divisorial fan on a smooth projective curve Y. For a minimal $3$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and a nef and big Weil divisor $L$ on $X$, we investigate the birational geometry inspired by $L$. We prove that $|mL|$ and $|K_X+mL|$ give birational maps for all $m\geq 17$. The result remains true under weaker assumption that $L$ is big and has no stable base components.
The main object of the present paper is a numerical criterion determining when a Weil divisor of a $\Q$--factorial complete toric variety admits a positive multiple Cartier divisor which is either numerically effective (nef) or ample. It is a consequence of $\Z$--linear interpretation of Gale duality and se\-con\-dary fan as developed in several previous papers of us. We consider normal projective n-dimensional varieties X whose anticanonical divisor class -K is ample and where every Weil divisor is a rational multiple of K. The index i is the largest integer such that K/i exists as a Weil divisor. We show (i) if X has log-terminal singularities, and in addition 1-forms on the smooth part of X are holomorphic on a resolution, then (-K)^n =< (max(in,n+1))^n; (ii) if the tangent sheaf of X is semistable, then (-K)^n =<(2n)^n. Let $f:X \to S$ be a Galois cover of Riemann surfaces, with Galois group $G$. In this paper we analyze the $G$-invariant divisors on $X$, and their associated spaces of meromorphic functions, differentials, and $q$-differentials. We generalize the trace formula for non-trivial elements of $G$ on $q$-differentials, as well as the Chevalley--Weil Formula. When $G$ is Abelian or when the genus of $S$ is 0 we prove additional results, and we also determine the non-special $G$-invariant divisors when both conditions are satisfied.
Let G be a finite subgroup of GL_n(C). A study is made of the ways in which resolutions of the quotient space C^n / G can parametrise G-constellations, that is, G-regular finite length sheaves. These generalise G-clusters, which are used in the McKay correspondence to construct resolutions of orbifold singularities. A complete classification theorem is achieved, in which all the natural families of G-constellations are shown to correspond to certain finite sets of G-Weil divisors, which are a special sort of rational Weil divisor, introduced in this paper. Using the language of T-varieties, we study torus invariant curves on a complete normal variety $X$ with an effective codimension-one torus action. In the same way that the $T$-invariant Weil divisors on $X$ are sums of "vertical" divisors and "horizontal" divisors, so too is each $T$-invariant curve a sum of "vertical" curves and "horizontal" curves. We give combinatorial formulas that calculate the intersection between $T$-invariant divisors and $T$-invariant curves, and generalize the celebrated toric cone theorem to the case of complete complexity-one $T$-varieties.
In this work we use arithmetic, geometric, and combinatorial techniques to compute the cohomology of Weil divisors of a special class of normal surfaces, the so-called rational ruled toric surfaces. These computations are used to study the topology of cyclic coverings of such surfaces ramified along Q-normal crossing divisors.
We shall describe the divisor class group and the graded canonical module of the multi-section ring for a normal projective variety X and Weil divisors D_1,..., D_s on X under a mild condition. In the proof, we use the theory of Krull domain and the equivariant twisted inverse functor due to Hashimoto.
Generalizing cones over projective toric varieties, we present arbitrary toric varieties as quotients of quasiaffine toric varieties. Such quotient presentations correspond to groups of Weil divisors generating the topology. Groups comprising Cartier divisors define free quotients, whereas $\QQ$-Cartier divisors define geometric quotients. Each quotient presentation yields homogeneous coordinates. Using homogeneous coordinates, we express quasicoherent sheaves in terms of multigraded modules and describe the set of morphisms into a toric variety.
We prove that the elliptic surface y^2=x^3+2(t^8+14t^4+1)x+4t^2(t^8+6t^4+1) has geometric Mordell-Weil rank 15. This completes a list of Kuwata, who gave explicit examples of elliptic K3-surfaces with geometric Mordell-Weil rank 0,1,..., 14, 16, 17,18.

In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard scheme of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. We prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard scheme come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety. As a consequence, we describe the group of sections of the Hitchin fibration for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on curves.
In this paper, we study properties of Weil height functions associated with numerically trivial divisors. It helps us to define the fractional limit of $h_E$ with respect to $h_D$ on $U$, with $D$ ample: \[ \Flim_D(E,U) := \liminf_{\substack{P \in U h_D(P) \rightarrow \infty}}\dfrac{h_E(P)}{h_D(P)}. \] The value of $\Flim_D(E,U)$ contains numerical information about a divisor $E$, enough to determine whether $E$ is ample, numerically effective or pseudo-effective.
We prove the test function conjecture of Kottwitz and the first named author for local models of Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure attached to Weil-restricted groups, as defined by B. Levin. Our result covers the (modified) local models attached to all connected reductive groups over $p$-adic local fields with $p\geq 5$. In addition, we give a self-contained study of relative affine Grassmannians and loop groups formed using general relative effective Cartier divisors in a relative curve over an arbitrary Noetherian affine scheme.
We study the Albanese image of a compact Kähler manifold whose geometric genus is one. We prove that if the Albanese map is not surjective, then the manifold maps surjectively onto an ample divisor in some abelian variety, and in many cases the ample divisor is a theta divisor. With a further natural assumption on the topology of the manifold, we prove that the manifold is an algebraic fiber space over a genus two curve. Finally we apply these results to study the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold which has the same Hodge numbers as those of an abelian variety of the same dimension.
In this paper we construct a geometric analogue of the Weil representation over a finite field. Our construction is principally invariant, not choosing any specific realization. This eliminates most of the unpleasant formulas that appear in the traditional (non-invariant) approaches, and puts in the forefront some delicate geometric phenomena which underlie this representation.
Let A be the local ring at a point of a normal complex variety with completion R. Srinivas has asked about the possible images of the induced map from Cl A to Cl R over all geometric normal domains A with fixed completion R. We use Noether-Lefschetz theory to prove that all finitely generated subgroups are possible in some familiar cases. As a byproduct we show that every finitely generated abelian group appears as the class group of the local ring at the vertex of a cone over some smooth complex variety of each positive dimension.
We consider the following question: for which invariants $g$ and $e$ is there a geometrically ruled surface $S \rightarrow C$ over a curve $C$ of genus $g$ with invariant $e$ such that $S$ is the support of an Ulrich line bundle with respect to a very ample line bundle? A surprising relation between the existence of certain proper Theta divisors on some moduli spaces of vector bundles on $C$ with the existence of Ulrich line bundles on $S$ will be the key to completely solve the above question. Given two torus invariant Weil divisors $D$ and $D'$ on a two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularity $X$, the groups $\mathop{Ext}\nolimits^i_{X}(\mathcal{O}(D),\mathcal{O}(D'))$, $i>0$, are naturally $\mathbb{Z}^2$-graded. We interpret these groups via certain combinatorial objects using methods from toric geometry. In particular, it is enough to give a combinatorial description of the $\mathop{Ext}\nolimits^1$-groups in the polyhedra of global sections of the Weil divisors involved. In geometric terms, given a singular foliation of the plane, a dicritical divisor is (whenever it exists) an irreducible component of the exceptional divisor which is transverse to the foliation. Abhyankar gave recently a definition of the dicritical divisors which generalize and algebraicize the geometrical definition in the local case and the polynomial case. Following his work, we give a geometrical interpretation of these dicritical divisors and new proofs of their existence.
We investigate the structure of geometrically ruled surfaces whose anti-canonical class is big. As an application we show that the Picard group of a normal projective surface whose anti-canonical class is nef and big is a free abelian group of finite rank.
The divisor theory for graphs is compared to the theory of linear series on curves through the correspondence associating a curve to its dual graph. An algebro-geometric interpretation of the combinatorial rank is proposed, and proved in some cases.

In this article, we extend a pull-back inequality for total dimension divisors of étale sheavs due to Saito. Using this formula, we generalize Deligne and Laumon's lower semi-continuous property for Swan conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves to higher relative dimensions in a geometric situation.
A result of Belyi can be stated as follows. Every curve defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective line with branch locus contained in a rigid divisor. We define the notion of geometrically rigid divisors in surfaces and then show that every surface defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective plane with branch locus contained in a geometrically rigid divisor in the plane. The main result is the characterisation of arithmetically defined divisors in the plane as geometrically rigid divisors in the plane.
Let $X^n \subset P^N$ be a nonsingular, nondegenerate projective variety of dimension $n$ and codimension $N-n \ge 2$. Let $|C_X|$ be the linear system determined by the double-point divisor obtained by generically projecting $X$ to a hypersurface in $P^{n+1}$. We classify those varieties for which $C_X$ is not ample, or equivalently, does not separate points of $X$. We call such varieties Roth varieties and prove that they exist for all dimensions $n \ge 2$ and give a description of their properties. Let $f: \mathbb{C} \to X$ be a transcendental holomorphic curve into a complex projective manifold $X$. Let $L$ be a very ample line bundle on $X$. Let $s$ be a very generic holomorphic section of $L$ and $D$ the zero divisor given by $s$. We prove that the \emph{geometric} defect of $D$ (defect of truncation $1$) with respect to $f$ is zero. We also prove that $f$ almost misses general enough analytic subsets on $X$ of codimension $2$.
The Jacobian group ${\rm Jac}(G)$ of a finite graph $G$ is a group whose cardinality is the number of spanning trees of $G$. $G$ also has a tropical Jacobian which has the structure of a real torus; using the notion of break divisors, An et al. obtained a polyhedral decomposition of the tropical Jacobian where vertices and cells correspond to elements of ${\rm Jac}(G)$ and spanning trees of $G$, respectively. We describe the behaviour of the rank of the Mordell-Weil group of the Picard variety of the generic fibre of a fibration in terms of local contributions given by averaging traces of Frobenius acting on the fibres. The results give a reinterpretation of Tate's conjecture (for divisors) and generalises previous results of Nagao, Rosen-Silverman and the authors.
Let X be a smooth or proper variety defined over a finite field. The geometric etale fundamental group of X is a normal subgroup of the Weil group, so conjugation gives it a Weil action. We consider the pro-Q_l-algebraic completion of the fundamental group as a non-abelian Weil representation. Lafforgue's Theorem and Deligne's Weil II theorems imply that this affine group scheme is mixed, in the sense that its structure sheaf is a mixed Weil representation.
