We introduce the concept of topological finite-determinacy for germs of analytic functions within a fixed ideal $I$, which provides a notion of topological finite-determinacy of functions with non-isolated singularities. We prove the following statement which generalizes classical results of Thom and Varchenko: let $A$ be the complement in the ideal $I$ of the space of germs whose topological type remains unchanged under a deformation within the ideal that only modifies sufficiently large order terms of the Taylor expansion; then $A$ has infinite codimension in $I$ in a suitable sense. We also prove the existence of generic topological types of families of germs of $I$ parametrized by an irreducible analytic set.
A more general class than complete intersection singularities is the class of determinantal singularities. They are defined by the vanishing of all the minors of a certain size of a $m\times n$-matrix. In this note, we consider $\mathcal{G}$-finite determinacy of matrices defining a special class of determinantal varieties. They are called essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS) and were defined by Ebeling and Gusein-Zade. In this note, we prove that matrices parametrized by generic homogeneous forms of degree $d$ define EIDS. It follows that $\mathcal{G}$-finite determinacy of…
Let $X\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact semialgebraic set and let $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ be a nonzero Nash function. We give a Solernó and D'Acunto-Kurdyka type estimation of the exponent $\varrho\in[0,1)$ in the Łojasiewicz gradient inequality $|\nabla f(x)|\ge C|f(x)|^\varrho$ for $x\in X$, $|f(x)|<\varepsilon$ for some constants $C,\varepsilon>0$, in terms of the degree of a polynomial $P$ such that $P(x,f(x))=0$, $x\in X$. As a corollary we obtain an estimation of the degree of sufficiency of non-isolated Nash functions singularities
We show that the knot type of the link of a real analytic map germ with isolated singularity $f\colon(\mathbb{R}^2,0)\to(\mathbb{R}^4,0)$ is a complete invariant for $C^0$-$\mathscr A$-equivalence. Moreover, we also prove that isolated instability implies $C^0$-finite determinacy, giving an explicit estimate for its degree. For the general case of real analytic map germs, $f\colon (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^p,0)$ ($n \leq p$), we use the Lojasiewicz exponent associated to the Mond's double point ideal $I^2(f)$ to obtain some criteria of Lipschitz and analytic regularity.
Denote by $H(d_1,d_2,d_3)$ the set of all homogeneous polynomial mappings $F=(f_1,f_2,f_3): \C^3\to\C^3$, such that $°f_i=d_i$. We show that if $\gcd(d_i,d_j)\leq 2$ for $1\leq i<j\leq 3$ and $\gcd(d_1,d_2,d_3)=1$, then there is a non-empty Zariski open subset $U\subset H(d_1,d_2,d_3)$ such that for every mapping $F\in U$ the map germ $(F,0)$ is $\mathcal{A}$-finitely determined. Moreover, in this case we compute the number of discrete singularities ($0$-stable singularities) of a generic mapping $(f_1,f_2,f_3):\C^3\to\C^3$, where $°f_i=d_i$.
We study singularities f in K[[x_1,...,x_n]] over an algebraically closed field K of arbitrary characteristic with respect to right respectively contact equivalence, and we establish that the finiteness of the Milnor respectively the Tjurina number is equivalent to finite determinacy. We give improved bounds for the degree of determinacy in positive characteristic. Moreover, we consider different non-degeneracy conditions of Kouchnirenko, Wall and Beelen-Pellikaan in positive characteristic, and we show that planar Newton non-degenerate singularities satisfy Milnor's formula mu=2 delta-r+1. Th…
Mather and Yau showed that an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is completely determined by its moduli algebra. It is shown, for the simple elliptic singularities, how to construct continuous invariants from the moduli algebras and, hence, associate invariants to the singularities themselves.
We characterize quasihomogeneity of isolated singularities by the injectivity of the map induced by the first differential of the logarithmic differential complex in the top local cohomology supported in the singular point.
We obtain sufficient conditions for the vanishing of higher homotopy groups of the complements to hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ in terms of the behavior at infinity and relate the monodromy of non isolated singularities to the position of singularities in generic plane sections.
In this paper, we study the coherence of a higher rank analogue of a multiplier ideal sheaf. Key tools of the study are Hörmander's $L^2$-estimate and a singular version of a Demailly--Skoda type result.
We study the vanishing neighbourhood of non-isolated singularities of functions on singular spaces by associating a general linear function. We use the carrousel monodromy in order to show how to get a better control over the attaching of thimbles. For one dimensional singularities, we prove obstructions to integer (co)homology groups and to the eigenspaces of the monodromy via monodromies of nearby sections. Our standpoint allows to find, in certain cases, the structure of the Milnor fibre up to the homotopy type.
Motivated by the embedding problem of canonical models in small codimension, we extend Severi's double point formula to the case of surfaces with rational double points, and we give more general double point formulae for varieties with isolated singularities. A concrete application is for surfaces with geometric genus $p_g=5$: the canonical model is embedded in $\mathbb{P}^4$ if and only if we have a complete intersection of type $(2,4)$ or $(3,3)$.
Let $X$ be a Hermitian complex space of pure dimension $n$ with isolated singularities. In the present paper, we give a natural resolution for the canonical sheaf of square-integrable holomorphic $n$-forms with Dirichlet boundary condition on $X$. As application, we obtain an explicit smooth model for the $L^2$-$\bar{\partial}$-cohomology, including natural resolutions for sheaves of $\bar{\partial}$-closed (holomorphic) $L^2$-functions.
We study the Brieskorn modules associated to a germ of holomorphic function with non-isolated singularities, and show that the Brieskorn module has naturally a structure of a module over the ring of microdifferential operators of nonpositive degree, and that the kernel of the morphism to the Gauss-Manin system coincides with the torsion part for the action of $t$ and also with that for the action of the inverse of the Gauss-Manin connection. This torsion part is not finitely generated in general, and we give a sufficient condition for the finiteness. We also prove a Thom-Sebastiani type theore…
Using the semicontinuity of the Milnor number and the Łojasiewicz exponent, we give a simple proof of Yau's characterization of isolated homogenous hypersurface singularities.
Normally one assumes isolated surface singularities to be normal. The purpose of this paper is to show that it can be useful to look at nonnormal singularities. By deforming them interesting normal singularities can be constructed, such as isolated, non Cohen-Macaulay threefold singularities. They arise by a small contraction of a smooth rational curve, whose normal bundle has a sufficiently positive subbundle. We study such singularities from their nonnormal general hyperplane section.
In this paper we review the classification of isolated quotient singularities over the field of complex numbers due to H. Zassenhaus, G. Vincent, and G. A. Wolf. As an application we describe Gorenstein isolated quotient singularities over C, generalizing a result of K. Kurano and S. Nishi.
This note provides a connection between the Hodge spectrum and the Hodge ideals recently developed by Mustaţǎ--Popa in the case of weighted homogeneous isolated singularities.
We prove that a smooth surface, non of general type, in projective four-space, which lies on a quartic hypersurface with isolated singularities has degree at most 27 (in fact we prove a slightly more general result).
The main aim of this paper is to characterize ideals I in the power series ring R=K[[x1,...,xs]] that are finitely determined up to contact equivalence by proving that this is the case if and only if I is an isolated complete intersection singularity, provided dim(R/I) > 0 and K is an infinite field (of arbitrary characteristic). Here two ideals I and J are contact equivalent if the local K-algebras R/I and R/J are isomorphic. If I is minimally generated by a1,...,am, we call I finitely contact determined if it is contact equivalent to any ideal J that can be generated by b1,...,bm with ai - b…
We give a classification of all Delsarte surfaces with only ADE singularities. Using this we give closed formulas for the Picard numbers of such surfaces.
We give a $δ$-constant criterion for equinormalizability of deformations of isolated (not necessarily reduced) curve singularities over smooth base spaces of dimension $\geq 1$. For one-parametric families of isolated curve singularities, we show that their topologically triviality is equivalent to the admission of weak simultaneous resolutions.
In this article we apply the results in the article "On Isolated Real Singularities I" to the study of real $ADE$-singularities. We show that said results enables us to find the homology groups of the Milnor fibres of real $ADE$-singularities of curves. As a corollary we show how to deduce the same for $ADE$-singularities in higher codimension, giving an almost complete answer in this case. This is followed by a discussion of the classification problem of simple real singularities.
By the fundamental work of Griffiths one knows that, under suitable assumption, homological and algebraic equivalence do not coincide for a general hypersurface section of a smooth projective variety $Y$. In the present paper we prove the same result in case $Y$ has isolated singularities.
We prove that the boundaries of the Milnor fibers of smoothings of non-isolated reduced complex surface singularities are graph manifolds. Moreover, we give a method, inspired by previous work of Némethi and Szilard, to compute associated plumbing graphs.
We give a criterion to test geometric properties such as Whitney equisingularity and Thom's $a_f$ condition for new families of (possibly non-isolated) hypersurface singularities that "behave well" with respect to their Newton diagrams. As an important corollary, we obtain that in such families all members have isomorphic Milnor fibrations.
We introduce a notion of a homological index of a holomorphic 1-form on a germ of a complex analytic variety with an isolated singularity, inspired by X. Gómez-Mont and G.-M. Greuel. For isolated complete intersection singularities it coincides with the index defined earlier by two of the authors. Subtracting from this index another one, called radial, we get an invariant of the singularity which does not depend on the 1-form. For isolated complete intersection singularities this invariant coincides with the Milnor number. We compute this invariant for arbitrary curve singularities and compare…
It is proved that a general Fano hypersurface of index 1 (in the projective space) with isolated singularities of general position is birationally rigid. Therefore it cannot be fibered into uniruled varieties of a smaller dimension by a rational map. The group of birational self-maps is either trivial or cyclic of order two.
We prove the non-rationality of a double cover of $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ branched over a hypersurface $F\subset\mathbb{P}^{n}$ of degree $2n$ having isolated singularities such that $n\ge 4$ and every singular points of the hypersurface $F$ is ordinary, i.e. the projectivization of its tangent cone is smooth, whose multiplicity does not exceed $2(n-2)$.
Gorenstein isolated quotient singularities of odd prime dimension are cyclic. In the case where the dimension is bigger than 1 and is not an odd prime number, then there exist Gorenstein isolated non-cyclic quotient singularities.
We study the topological triviality and the Whitney equisingularity of a family of isolated determinantal singularities. On one hand, we give a Lê-Ramanujam type theorem for this kind of singularities by using the vanishing Euler characteristic. On the other hand, we extend the results of Teissier and Gaffney about the Whitney equisingularity of hypersurfaces and complete intersections, respectively, in terms of the constancy of the polar multiplicities.
We collect some classical results about holomorphic 1-forms of a reduced complex curve singularity. They are used to study the pull-back of holomorphic 1-forms on an isolated complete intersection curve singularity under the normalization morphism. We wonder whether the Milnor number $μ$ and the Tjurina number $τ$ of any isolated plane curve singularity satisfy the inequality $3μ<4τ$.
In this paper we construct 206 examples of Calabi-Yau manifolds with different Euler numbers. All constructed examples are smooth models of double coverings of $P^3$ branched along an octic surface. We allow 11 types of (not necessary isolated) singularities in the branch locus. Thus we broaden the class of examples studied in math.AG/9902057. For every considered example we compute the Euler number and give a precise description of a resolution of singularities.
We prove that if $ϕ:(X,0)\to (X,0)$ is a finite endomorphism of an isolated singularity such that $\operatorname{deg}(ϕ)\geq 2$ and $ϕ$ is étale in codimension 1, then $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein and log canonical.
We study the Milnor monodromies of non-isolated hypersurface singularities and show that the reduced cohomology groups of the Milnor fibers are concentrated in the middle degree for some eigenvalues of the monodromies. As an application of this result, we give an explicit formula for some parts of their Jordan normal forms.
We extend the results from the previous paper by A. Frühbis-Krüger and the author [arXiv:1501.01915] to the vanishing topology of those singularities in the title. Studying the case of possibly non-isolated singularities in the Tjurina- transform, we reveal that in dimension 3 and 2 there always is exactly one special vanishing cycle in degree 2 closely related to the determinantal structure of the singularity.
We investigate the existence of complete intersection threefolds $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ with only isolated, ordinary multiple points and we provide some sufficient conditions for their factoriality.
Isolated Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 singularities share many common features with isolated complete intersection singularities, but they also exhibit some striking new behaviour. One such instance was recently observed by Damon and Pike in their study of the vanishing topology and Euler characteristic, where they took this class of singularities as examples. In this article, we explore their findings further by determining the Betti numbers explicitly and explain the new phenomena. An important tool here is the Tjurina modification relating a Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 singularity to a fin…
In an unpublished lecture note, J. Briançon observed that if $\{f_t\}$ is a family of isolated complex hypersurface singularities such that the Newton boundary of $f_t$ is independent of $t$ and $f_t$ is non-degenerate, then the corresponding family of hypersurfaces $\{f_t^{-1}(0)\}$ is Whitney equisingular (and hence topologically equisingular). A first generalization of this assertion to families with non-isolated singularities was given by the second author under a rather technical condition. In the present paper, we give a new generalization under a simpler condition.
In this note we provide a formula for the Tjurina number of a join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. From this we are able to provide a characterization of isolated hypersurface singularities whose difference between the Milnor and Tjurina numbers is less or equal than two arising as the join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. Also, we are able to provide new upper bounds for the quotient of Milnor and Tjurina numbers of certain join of isolated hypersurface singularities. Finally, we deduce an upper bound for the quotient of Milnor and …
In this paper we study the deformation and Q-Gorenstein deformation theory of schemes with non-isolated singularities. We obtain obstruction spaces for the existence of deformations and also for local deformations to exist globally. Finally we obtain explicit criteria in order for a pure and reduced scheme of finite type over a field $k$ to have smoothings and Q-Gorenstein smoothings.
We study the essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS), defined by W. Ebeling and S. Gusein-Zade, as a generalization of isolated singularity. We prove in dimension $3$ a minimality theorem for the Milnor number of a generic hyperplane section of an EIDS, generalizing previous results by J. Snoussi in dimension $2$. We define strongly generic hyperplane sections of an EIDS and show that they are still EIDS. Using strongly general hyperplanes, we extend a result of Lê D. T. concerning constancy of the Milnor number.
For quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, the logarithmic comparison theorem has been characterized explicitly by Holland and Mond. In the non quasihomogeneous case, we give a necessary condition for the logarithmic comparison theorem in terms of the Gauss-Manin system of the singularity. It shows in particular that the logarithmic comparison theorem can hold for a non quasihomogeneous singularity only if 1 is an eigenvalue of the monodromy.
We give a method to investigate isolated log canonical singularities with index one which are not log terminal. Our method depends on the minimal model program. One of the main purposes is to prove that our invariant coincides with Ishii's Hodge theoretic invariant.
In this survey we overview the different approaches and solutions of a question posed by Dimca and Greuel about the quotient of the Milnor and Tjurina numbers.
Thom (residual) polynomials in characteristic classes are used in the analysis of geometry of functional spaces. They serve as a tool in description of classes Poincaré dual to subvarieties of functions of prescribed types. We give explicit universal expressions for residual polynomials in spaces of functions on complex curves having isolated singularities and multisingularities, in terms of few characteristic classes. These expressions lead to a partial explicit description of a stratification of Hurwitz spaces.
We generalize a theorem of Delzant classifying compact connected symplectic manifolds with completely integrable torus actions to certain singular symplectic spaces. The assumption on singularities is that if they are not finite quotient then they are isolated.
Let X be a complex projective variety of dimension n with only isolated normal singularities. In this paper we prove, using mixed Hodge theory, that if the link of each singular point of X is (n-2)-connected, then X is a formal topological space. This result applies to a large class of examples, such as normal surface singularities, varieties with ordinary multiple points, hypersurfaces with isolated singularities and more generally, complete intersections with isolated singularities. We obtain analogous results for contractions of subvarieties.
