The main aim of this paper is to characterize ideals I in the power series ring R=K[[x1,...,xs]] that are finitely determined up to contact equivalence by proving that this is the case if and only if I is an isolated complete intersection singularity, provided dim(R/I) > 0 and K is an infinite field (of arbitrary characteristic). Here two ideals I and J are contact equivalent if the local K-algebras R/I and R/J are isomorphic. If I is minimally generated by a1,...,am, we call I finitely contact determined if it is contact equivalent to any ideal J that can be generated by b1,...,bm with ai - bi in <x1,...,xs>^k for some integer k. We give also computable and semicontinuous determinacy bounds.
The above result is proved by considering left-right equivalence on the ring M of m x n matrices A with entries in R and we show that the Fitting ideals of a finitely determined matrix in M have maximal height, a result of independent interest. The case of ideals is treated by considering 1-column matrices. Fitting ideals together with a special construction are used to prove the characterization of finite determinacy for ideals in R. Some results of this paper are known in characteristic 0, but they need new (and more sophisticated) arguments in positive characteristic partly because the tangent space to the orbit of the left-right group cannot be described in the classical way. In addition we point out several other oddities, including the concept of specialization for power series, where the classical approach (due to Krull) does not work anymore. We include some open problems and a conjecture.
In this note, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix A in M to be finitely G-determined, where M is the ring of 2 x 2 matrices whose entries are formal power series over an infinite field, and G is a group acting on M by change of coordinates together with multiplication by invertible matrices from both sides.
A more general class than complete intersection singularities is the class of determinantal singularities. They are defined by the vanishing of all the minors of a certain size of a $m\times n$-matrix. In this note, we consider $\mathcal{G}$-finite determinacy of matrices defining a special class of determinantal varieties. They are called essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS) and were defined by Ebeling and Gusein-Zade. In this note, we prove that matrices parametrized by generic homogeneous forms of degree $d$ define EIDS. It follows that $\mathcal{G}$-finite determinacy of…
We consider matrices with entries in a local ring, Mat(m,n,R). Fix a group action, G on Mat(m,n,R), and a subset of allowed deformations, Σ\subseteq Mat(m,n,R). The standard question of Singularity Theory is the finite-(Σ,G)-determinacy of matrices. Finite determinacy implies algebraizability and is equivalent to a stronger notion: stable algebraizability. In our previous work this determinacy question was reduced to the study of the tangent spaces to Σand to the orbit, T_{(Σ,A)}, T_{(GA,A)} , and their quotient, the tangent module to the miniversal deformation. In particular, the order of det…
We consider matrices with entries in a local ring, Mat(m,n;R). Fix an action of group G on Mat(m,n;R), and a subset of allowed deformations, Σin Mat(m,n;R). The standard question (along the lines of Singularity Theory) is the finite-(Σ,G)-determinacy of matrices. In our previous work this determinacy question was reduced to the study of the tangent spaces to Σand to the orbit, T_{(Σ,A)}, T_{(GA,A)}, and their quotient: the tangent module to the miniversal deformation. In particular, the order of determinacy is controlled by the annihilator of this tangent module. Then we have studied this tang…
Let $R=K[[x_1,...,x_s]]$ be the ring of formal power series with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic. On the ring $M_{m,n}$ of $m\times n$ matrices $A$ with entries in $R$ we consider several equivalence relations given by the action on $M_{m,n}$ of a group $G$. $G$ can be the group of automorphisms of $R$, combined with the multiplication of invertible matrices from the left, from the right, or from both sides, respectively. We call $A$ finitely $G$-determined if $A$ is $G$-equivalent to any matrix $B$ with ${A-B} \in {\mathfrak{m}^k M_{m,n}}$ for some fi…
We show that the knot type of the link of a real analytic map germ with isolated singularity $f\colon(\mathbb{R}^2,0)\to(\mathbb{R}^4,0)$ is a complete invariant for $C^0$-$\mathscr A$-equivalence. Moreover, we also prove that isolated instability implies $C^0$-finite determinacy, giving an explicit estimate for its degree. For the general case of real analytic map germs, $f\colon (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^p,0)$ ($n \leq p$), we use the Lojasiewicz exponent associated to the Mond's double point ideal $I^2(f)$ to obtain some criteria of Lipschitz and analytic regularity.
We consider the actions of different groups G on the space M of m x n matrices with entries in the formal power series ring K[[x1,..., xs]], K an arbitrary field. G acts on M by analytic change of coordinates, combined with the multiplication by invertible matrices from the left, the right or from both sides, respectively. This includes right and contact equivalence of functions and mappings, resp. ideals. A is called finitely G-determined if any matrix B, with entries of A-B in <x1,...,xs>^k for some k, is contained in the G-orbit of A. The purpose of this paper is to present algorithms for c…
The problem we are considering came up in connection with the classification of singularities in positive characteristic. Then it is important that certain invariants like the determinacy can be bounded simultaneously in families of formal power series parametrized by some algebraic variety. In contrast to the case of analytic or algebraic families, where such a bound is well known, the problem is rather subtle, since the modules defining the invariants are quasi-finite but not finite over the base space. In fact, in general the fibre dimension is not semicontinuous and the quasi-finite locus …
We determine explicitly the Hodge ideals for the determinant hypersurface as an intersection of symbolic powers of determinantal ideals. We prove our results by studying the Hodge and weight filtrations on the mixed Hodge module O_X(*Z) of regular functions on the space X of n x n matrices, with poles along the divisor Z of singular matrices. The composition factors for the weight filtration on O_X(*Z) are pure Hodge modules with underlying D-modules given by the simple GL-equivariant D-modules on X, where GL is the natural group of symmetries, acting by row and column operations on the matrix…
Sets of zero-dimensional ideals in the polynomial ring $k[x,y]$ that share the same leading term ideal with respect to a given term ordering are known to be affine spaces called Gröbner cells. Conca-Valla and Constantinescu parametrize such Gröbner cells in terms of certain canonical Hilbert-Burch matrices for the lexicographical and degree-lexicographical term orderings, respectively. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $(x,y)$-primary ideals in Gröbner cells which is compatible with the local structure of such ideals. More precisely, we extend previous results to the local setting by…
Recent breakthroughs have been made in the use of semidefinite programming and its application to real polynomial solving. For example, the real radical of a zero dimensional ideal, can be determined by such approaches as shown by Lasserre and collaborators. Some progress has been made on the determination of the real radical in positive dimension by Ma, Wang and Zhi. Such work involves the determination of maximal rank semidefinite moment matrices. Existing methods are computationally expensive and have poorer accuracy on larger examples. This paper is motivated by problems in the numerical c…
In this paper, we describe a new method to compute the minimum of a real polynomial function and the ideal defining the points which minimize this polynomial function, assuming that the minimizer ideal is zero-dimensional. Our method is a generalization of Lasserre relaxation method and stops in a finite number of steps. The proposed algorithm combines Border Basis, Moment Matrices and Semidefinite Programming. In the case where the minimum is reached at a finite number of points, it provides a border basis of the minimizer ideal.
We show that the shortest nonzero polynomials vanishing on bounded-rank matrices and skew-symmetric matrices are the determinants and Pfaffians characterising the rank. Algebraically, this means that in the ideal generated by all $t$-minors or $t$-Pfaffians of a generic matrix or skew-symmetric matrix one cannot find any polynomial with fewer terms than those determinants or Pfaffians, respectively, and that those determinants and Pfaffians are essentially the only polynomials in the ideal with that many terms. As a key tool of independent interest, we show that the ideal of a sufficiently gen…
We study the degree of non-homogeneous lattice ideals over arbitrary fields, and give formulae to compute the degree in terms of the torsion of certain factor groups of Z^s and in terms of relative volumes of lattice polytopes. We also study primary decompositions of lattice ideals over an arbitrary field using the Eisenbud-Sturmfels theory of binomial ideals over algebraically closed fields. We then use these results to study certain families of integer matrices (PCB, GPCB, CB, GCB matrices) and the algebra of their corresponding matrix ideals. In particular, the family of generalized positiv…
Consider the affine space consisting of pairs of matrices $(A,B)$ of fixed size, and its closed subvariety given by the rank conditions $\operatorname{rank} A \leq a$, $\operatorname{rank} B \leq b$ and $\operatorname{rank} (A\cdot B) \leq c$, for three non-negative integers $a,b,c$. These varieties are precisely the orbit closures of representations for the equioriented $A_3$ quiver. In this paper we construct the (equivariant) minimal free resolutions of the defining ideals of such varieties. We show how this problem is equivalent to determining the cohomology groups of the tensor product of…
We study algebraic and homological properties of the ideal of submaximal minors of a sparse generic symmetric matrix. This ideal is generated by all $(n-1)$-minors of a symmetric $n \times n$ matrix whose entries in the upper triangle are distinct variables or zeros and the zeros are only allowed at off-diagonal places. The surviving off-diagonal entries are encoded as a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. We prove that the minimal free resolution of this ideal is obtained from the case without any zeros via a simple pruning procedure, extending methods of Boocher. This allows us to compute al…
Over a field of characteristic $0$, we construct a minimal set of generators of the defining ideals of closures of nilpotent conjugacy class in the set of $n \times n$ matrices. This modifies a conjecture of Weyman and provides a complete answer to it.
We compute the local cohomology modules H_Y^(X,O_X) in the case when X is the complex vector space of n x n symmetric, respectively skew-symmetric matrices, and Y is the closure of the GL-orbit consisting of matrices of any fixed rank, for the natural action of the general linear group GL on X. We describe the D-module composition factors of the local cohomology modules, and compute their multiplicities explicitly in terms of generalized binomial coefficients. One consequence of our work is a formula for the cohomological dimension of ideals of even minors of a generic symmetric matrix: in the…
One deals with degenerations by coordinate sections of the square generic Hankel matrix over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, along with its main related structures, such as the determinant of the matrix, the ideal generated by its partial derivatives, the polar map defined by these derivatives, the Hessian matrix and the ideal of the submaximal minors of the matrix. It is proved that the polar map is dominant for any such degenerations, and not homaloidal in the generic case. The problem of whether the determinant $f$ of the matrix is a factor of the Hessian with the (Segre) expected multi…
Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gröbner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many othe…
