We prove that a smooth surface, non of general type, in projective four-space, which lies on a quartic hypersurface with isolated singularities has degree at most 27 (in fact we prove a slightly more general result).
We construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. This provides a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. In fact, in our second paper, we show that these quartics are exactly the Scorza quartics associated to general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics and this enables us to prove there the main cojecture of Dolgachev and Kanev.
In "Curves on Heisenberg invariant quartic surfaces in projective 3-space", Eklund showed that a general $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface contains at least $320$ conics. In this paper we analyse the field of definition of those conics as well as their Monodromy group. As a result, we prove that the moduli space $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface with a marked conic has $10$ irreducible components.
The hypersurface of Luroth quartic curves inside the projective space of plane quartics has degree 54. We give a proof of this fact along the lines outlined in a paper by Morley, published in 1919. Another proof has been given by Le Potier and Tikhomirov in 2001, in the setting of moduli spaces of vector bundles on the projective plane. Morley's proof uses the description of plane quartics as branch curves of Geiser involutions and gives new geometrical interpretations of the 36 planes associated to the Cremona hexahedral representations of a nonsingular cubic surface.
The moduli space M_0 of semi-stable rank 2 vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant over a non-hyperelliptic curve C of genus 3 is isomorphic to a quartic hypersurface in P^7 (Coble's quartic). We show that M_0 is self-dual and that its polar map associates to a stable bundle E \in M_0 a bundle F which is characterized by dim H^0(C, E \otimes F) = 4. The projective space PH^0(C, E \otimes F) is equipped with a net of quadrics Πand it is shown that the map which associates to E \in M_0 the isomorphism class of the plane quartic Hessian curve of Πis a dominant map to the moduli space of gen…
We show that there cannot be more than 64 lines on a quartic surface admitting isolated rational double points over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p \neq 2,\,3$, thus extending Segre--Rams--Schütt theorem. Our proof offers a deeper insight into the triangle-free case and takes advantage of a special configuration of lines, thereby avoiding the technique of the flecnodal divisor. We provide several examples of non-smooth K3 quartic surfaces with many lines.
We compute the number of rational quartics on a general Calabi-Yau hypersurface in weighted projective space P(2,1^4). The result agrees with the prediction made by mirror symmetry.
Let $X$ be a smooth quartic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$. By the Brill-Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces, if a rank 2 aCM bundle on $X$ is globally generated, then it is the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ associated with a smooth curve $C$ on $X$ and a base point free pencil $Z$ on $C$. In this paper, we will focus on the classification of such bundles on $X$ to investigate aCM bundles of rank 2 on $X$. Concretely, we will give a necessary condition for a rank 2 vector bundle of type $E_{C,Z}$ to be indecomposable initialized and aCM, in the case where the class of $C$ in Pic($X$) i…
In this paper, we prove a Clifford type inequality for the curve $X_{2,2,2,4}$, which is the intersection of a quartic and three general quadratics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We thus prove a stronger Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for characters of stable vector bundles and stable objects on $X_{2,4}$. Applying the scheme proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrì, Stellari and Toda, we can construct an open subset of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X_{2,4}$.
Since the work of Ellingsrud and Peskine at the end of 1980s, it has been known that, with the exception of a finite number of families, smooth compact complex surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ with prescribed Chern classes must lie on hypersurfaces of degree $m\leq 5$. The study of surfaces lying on a small degree hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$---small meaning $\leq5$---seems to be a way of obtaining empirical data leading to a better conceptual understanding of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$. From this perspective, two main issues are considered in the paper: - an analogue of the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum…
We study a double cover $ψ:X\to V\subset\mathbb{P}^{n}$ branched over a smooth divisor $R\subset V$ such that $R$ is cut on $V$ by a hypersurface of degree $2(n-\mathrm{deg}(V))$, where $n\geqslant 8$ and $V$ is a smooth hypersurface of degree 3 or 4. We prove that $X$ is nonrational and birationally superrigid.
Let X be a non-singular projective hypersurface of degree 4, which is defined over the rational numbers. Assume that X has dimension 39 or more, and that X contains a real point and p-adic points for every prime p. Then X is shown to contain infinitely many rational points.
Let $X_4\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ be a quartic hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 4$ over an infinite field $k$. We show that if either $X_4$ contains a linear subspace $Λ$ of dimension $h\geq \max\{2,\dim(Λ\cap \text{Sing}(X_4))-2\}$ or has double points along a linear subspace of dimension $h\geq 3$, a smooth $k$-rational point and is otherwise general, then $X_4$ is unirational over $k$. This improves previous results by A. Predonzan and J. Harris, B. Mazur, R. Pandharipande for quartics. We also provide a density result for the $k$-rational points of quartic $3$-folds with a double plane over…
We study rational surfaces on very general Fano hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$, with an eye toward unirationality. We prove that given any fixed family of rational surfaces, a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ and $n$ sufficiently large will admit no maps from surfaces in that family. In particular, this shows that for such hypersurfaces, any rational curve in the space of rational curves must meet the boundary. We also prove that for any fixed ratio $α$, a very general hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ will admit no maps fr…
Using Voisin's method we prove that a very general hypersurface of degree at least 4 in complex projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9 is not stably rational and so, in particular, not rational. We obtain the same conclusion for the double covering of projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9, branched along a very general quartic hypersurface. On the other hand, such double coverings as well as general quartic hypersurfaces of dimension at least 5 are known to be unirational.
We give examples of smooth $\k$-unirational line-free quartic hypersurfaces over a non algebraically closed field $\k$. Unlike other methods of proving unirationality, our method does not rely on existence of linear spaces on quartics.
The quartic hypersurfaces in P^4 invariant under the standard representation of S_6 form a linear pencil. We prove that a general member of this pencil is not rational.
We show that a wide class of hypersurfaces in all dimensions are not stably rational. Namely, for all d at least about 2n/3, a very general complex hypersurface of degree d in P^{n+1} is not stably rational. The statement generalizes Colliot-Thelene and Pirutka's theorem that very general quartic 3-folds are not stably rational. The result covers all the degrees in which Kollar proved that a very general hypersurface is non-rational, and a bit more. For example, very general quartic 4-folds are not stably rational, whereas it was not even known whether these varieties are rational.
Let $X={\bf P}^2\times{\bf P}^{n-1}$ embedded with $Ø(1,2)$. We prove that its $(n+1)$-secant variety $σ_{n+1}(X)$ is a hypersurface, while it is expected that it fills the ambient space. The equation of $σ_{n+1}(X)$ is the symmetric analog of the Strassen equation. When $n=4$ the determinantal map takes $σ_5(X)$ to the hypersurface of Lüroth quartics, which is the image of the Barth map studied by LePotier and Tikhomirov. This hint allows to obtain some results on the jumping lines and the Brill-Noether loci of symplectic bundles on ${\bf P}^2$ by using the higher secant varieties of $X$.
Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^4$ be a terminal factorial quartic $3$-fold. If $X$ is non-singular, $X$ is \emph{birationally rigid}, i.e. the classical MMP on any terminal $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective variety $Z$ birational to $X$ always terminates with $X$. This no longer holds when $X$ is singular, but very few examples of non-rigid factorial quartics are known. In this article, we first bound the local analytic type of singularities that may occur on a terminal factorial quartic hypersurface $X\subset \mathbb{P}^4$. A singular point on such a hypersurface is either of type $cA_n$ ($n\geq 1$…
This small note contains some easy examples of quartic hypersurfaces that have finite-dimensional motive. As an illustration, we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky (concerning smash-equivalence) for some of these special quartics.
We complete the study of rationality problem for hypersurfaces $X_t\subset \mathbb{P}^4$ of degree $4$ invariant under the action of the symmetric group $S_6$.
In this paper, we develop a new method to classify abelian automorphism groups of hypersurfaces. We use this method to classify (Theorem 4.2) abelian groups that admit a liftable action on a smooth cubic fourfold. A parallel result (Theorem 5.1) is obtained for quartic surfaces.
We construct families of quartic and cubic hypersurfaces through a canonical curve, which are parametrized by an open subset in a Grassmannian and a Flag variety respectively. Using G. Kempf's cohomological obstruction theory, we show that these families cut out the canonical curve and that the quartics are birational (via a blowing-up of a linear subspace) to quadric bundles over the projective plane, whose Steinerian curve equals the canonical curve.

R. Beheshti showed that, for a smooth Fano hypersurface $X$ of degree $\leq 8$ over the complex number field $\mathbb{C}$, the dimension of the space of lines lying in $X$ is equal to the expected dimension. We study the space of conics on $X$. In this case, if $X$ contains some linear subvariety, then the dimension of the space can be larger than the expected dimension. In this paper, we show that, for a smooth Fano hypersurface $X$ of degree $\leq 6$ over $\mathbb{C}$, and for an irreducible component $R$ of the space of conics lying in $X$, if the $2$-plane spanned by a general conic of $R$…
In this paper we investigate the divisor $\mathcal C_{14}$ inside the moduli space of smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$, whose generic element is a smooth cubic containing a smooth quartic scroll. Using the fact that all degenerations of quartic scrolls in $\mathbb P^5$ contained in a smooth cubic hypersurface are surfaces with one apparent double point, we conclude that every cubic hypersurface belonging to $\mathcal C_{14}$ is rational. As an application of our results and of the construction of some explicit examples contained in the Appendix, we also prove that the Pfaffian locus…
We use the cut and paste relation $[Y^{[2]}] = [Y][\mathbb{P}^m] + \mathbb{L}^2 [F(Y)]$ in $K_0(\text{Var}_k)$ of Galkin--Shinder for cubic hypersurfaces arising from projective geometry to characterize cubic hypersurfaces of sufficiently high dimension under certain numerical or genericity conditions. Removing the conditions involving the middle Betti number from the numerical conditions used extends the possible $Y$ to cubic hypersurfaces, complete intersections of two quadric hypersurfaces, or complete intersections of two quartic hypersurfaces. The same method also gives a family of other …
A monoid hypersurface is an irreducible hypersurface of degree d which has a singular point of multiplicity d-1. Any monoid hypersurface admits a rational parameterization, hence is of potential interest in computer aided geometric design. We study properties of monoids in general and of monoid surfaces in particular. The main results include a description of the possible real forms of the singularities on a monoid surface other than the (d-1)-uple point. These results are applied to the classification of singularities on quartic monoid surfaces, complementing earlier work on the subject.
Let A be an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety of dimension g . Third order theta functions embed A in a projective space P(V_3), while second order theta functions embed the Kummer variety K=A/<-1> in a projective space P(V_2). Coble observed that for g = 2 there is a unique cubic hypersurface in P(V_3) that is singular along A, and for g = 3 a unique quartic hypersurface in P(V_2) singular along K . We explain these facts by a simple analysis of the representations of the corresponding Heisenberg group.
Let $S \subset ¶^n$ be a smooth quartic hypersurface defined over a number field $K$. If $n \ge 4$, then for some finite extension $K'$ of $K$ the set $S(K')$ of $K'$-rational points of $S$ is Zariski dense.
We compute Hochschild cohomology of projective hypersurfaces starting from the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex of the (restricted) structure sheaf. We are particularly interested in the second cohomology group and its relation with deformations. We show that a projective hypersurface is smooth if and only if the classical HKR decomposition holds for this group. In general, the first Hodge component describing scheme deformations has an interesting inner structure corresponding to the various ways in which first order deformations can be realized: deforming local multiplications, deforming restrict…
We explain a classical construction of a del Pezzo surface of degree d = 4 or 5 as a smooth order two congruence of lines in 3-space whose focal surface is a quartic surface $X_{20-d}$ with 20-d ordinary double points. We also show that $X_{15}$ can be realized as a hyperplane section of the Castelnuovo-Richmond-Igusa quartic hypersurface. This leads to the proof of rationality of the moduli space of 15-nodal quartic surfaces. We discuss some other birational models of $X_{15}$: quartic symmetroids, 5-nodal quartic surfaces, 10-nodal sextic surfaces in $P^4$ and nonsingular surfaces of degree …
We work over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Ellingsrud-Peskine proved that smooth surfaces in P^4 are subject to strong limitations. Their whole argument is derived from the fact that the sectional genus of surfaces of degree d lying on a hypersurface of degree s varies in an interval of length \frac{d(s-1)^2}{2s}. The aim of the present paper is to show that for smooth codimension two subvarieties of P^n, n\geq 5, one can get a similar result with an interval whose length depends only on s. The main point is Lemma 1.1 whose proof is a direct application of the posi…
We study the geometry underlying the difference between non-negative polynomials and sums of squares. The hypersurfaces that discriminate these two cones for ternary sextics and quaternary quartics are shown to be Noether-Lefschetz loci of K3 surfaces. The projective duals of these hypersurfaces are defined by rank constraints on Hankel matrices. We compute their degrees using numerical algebraic geometry, thereby verifying results due to Maulik and Pandharipande. The non-SOS extreme rays of the two cones of non-negative forms are parametrized respectively by the Severi variety of plane ration…
We study log canonical thresholds on quartic threefolds, quintic fourfolds, and double spaces. As an application, we show that they have a Kaehler-Einstein metric if they are general.
We investigate the structure of a variety of new Moishezon twistor spaces, by utilizing the pluri-half-anti-canonical map from the twistor spaces. Each of these twistor spaces is bimeromorphic to a double covering of a scroll of planes over a rational normal curve, and the branch divisor of the double cover is a cut of the scroll by a quartic hypersurface. In particular, the double covering has a pencil of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree two. Correspondingly, the twistor spaces have a pencil of rational surfaces with big anti-canonical class. The base locus of the last pencil is a cycle of ration…
Let $C$ be a curve of genus two. We denote by $SU_C(3)$ the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 3 and trivial determinant over $C$, and by $J^d$ the variety of line bundles of degree $d$ on $C$. In particular, $J^1$ has a canonical theta divisor $Θ$. The space $SU_C(3)$ is a double cover of $P^8=|3Θ|$ branched along a sextic hypersurface, the Coble sextic. In the dual $\check{P}^8=|3Θ|^*$, where $J^1$ is embedded, there is a unique cubic hypersurface singular along $J^1$, the Coble cubic. We prove that these two hypersurfaces are dual, inducing a non-abelian Torelli result. More…
We establish Manin's conjecture for a quartic del Pezzo surface split over Q and having a singularity of type A_3 and containing exactly four lines. It is the first example of split singular quartic del Pezzo surface whose universal torsor is not a hypersurface for which Manin's conjecture is proved.
--- There are (many) smooth quartic hypersurfaces in ${\bf P}^4_{\mathbb C}$ which are not stably rational. More precisely, their degree zero Chow group is not universally equal to $\mathbb Z$. The proof uses a variation of a specialisation method due to C. Voisin.
In this paper, necessary and sufficient criteria for the Jacobian ideal of a reduced hypersurface with isolated singularity to be of linear type, are presented. We prove that the gradient ideal of a reduced projective plane curve with simple singularities ($\mathrm{ADE}$) is of linear type. We show that any reduced projective quartic curve is of gradient linear type.
We prove that a smooth, subcanonical surface of P^4 (projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero) is complete intersection if it is contained in a quartic hypersurface.

The Eckardt hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{19}$ parameterizes smooth cubic surfaces with an Eckardt point, which is a point common to three of the $27$ lines on a smooth cubic surface. We describe the cubic surfaces lying on the singular locus of the model of this hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$, obtained via restriction to the space of cubic surfaces possessing a so-called Sylvester form. We prove that inside the moduli of cubics, the singular locus corresponds to a reducible surface with two rational irreducible components intersecting along two rational curves. The two curves intersect in two …
Many classical results in algebraic geometry arise from investigating some extremal behaviors that appear among projective varieties not lying on any hypersurface of fixed degree. We study two numerical invariants attached to such collections of varieties: their minimal degree and their maximal number of linearly independent smallest degree hypersurfaces passing through them. We show results for curves and surfaces, and pose several questions.
We present various improvements to the deformation method for computing the zeta function of smooth projective hypersurfaces over finite fields using $p$-adic cohomology. This includes new bounds for the $p$-adic and $t$-adic precisions required to obtain provably correct results and gains in the efficiency of the individual steps of the method. The algorithm that we thus obtain has lower time and space complexities than existing methods. Moreover, our implementation is more practical and can be applied more generally, which we illustrate with examples of quintic curves and quartic surfaces.
The subject of this paper is the study of various families of quartic K3 surfaces which are invariant under a certain $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$ action. In particular, we describe families whose general member contains $8,16,24$ or $32$ lines as well as the $320$ conics found by Eklund (some of which degenerate into the mentioned lines). The second half of this paper is dedicated to finding the Picard group of a general member of each of these families, and describing it as a lattice. It turns out that for each family the Picard group of a very general surface is generated by the lines and…
