Let $X$ be a smooth quartic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$. By the Brill-Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces, if a rank 2 aCM bundle on $X$ is globally generated, then it is the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ associated with a smooth curve $C$ on $X$ and a base point free pencil $Z$ on $C$. In this paper, we will focus on the classification of such bundles on $X$ to investigate aCM bundles of rank 2 on $X$. Concretely, we will give a necessary condition for a rank 2 vector bundle of type $E_{C,Z}$ to be indecomposable initialized and aCM, in the case where the class of $C$ in Pic($X$) is contained in the sublattice of rank 2 generated by the hyperplane class of $X$ and a non-trivial initialized aCM line bundle on $X$.
Our aim in this article is to produce new examples of semistable Lazarsfeld- Mukai bundles on smooth projective surfaces $X$ using the notion of parabolic vector bundles. In particular, we associate natural parabolic structures to any rank two (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle and study the parabolic stability of these parabolic bundles. We also show that the orbifold bundles on Kawamata coverings of $X$ corresponding to the above parabolic bundles are themselves certain (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. This gives semistable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on Kawamata covers of the projective plane and …
We survey the development of the notion of Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles together with various applications, from the classification of Mukai manifolds to Brill-Noether theory and syzygies of $K3$ sections. To see these techniques at work, we present a short proof of a result of M. Reid on the existence of elliptic pencils.
Previously, many people have studied a stability of vector bundles of given rank and Chern classes on algebraic varieties. Recently, we are interested in the slope stability of the rank 2 Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ on a K3 surface $X$ associated to a very ample smooth curve $C$ on $X$ and a base point free pencil $Z$ on $C$ with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$. In this paper, we will give a sufficient condition for such a Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ to be $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$-slope semistable by ACM line bundles with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective K3 surface over complex numbers and $C$ be an ample curve on $X$. In this paper we will study the semistability of the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C, A}$ associated to a line bundle $A$ ion $C$ such that $|A|$ is a pencil on $C$ and computes the Clifford index of $C$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $E_{C, A}$ being semistable.
Let $X$ be the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}$ over $\mathbb{C}$ and $Y$ be the associated Kummer surface. Consider an ample line bundle $L=O(m\widetilde{\mathcal{C}})$ on $X$ for an even number $m$, and its descent to $Y$, say $L'$. We show that any dominating component of $\mathcal{W}^1_{d}(|L'|)$ corresponds to $μ_{L'}$-stable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on $Y$. Further, for a smooth curve $C \in |L|$ and a base-point free $g^1_d$ on $C$, say $(A,V)$, we study the $μ_L$-semistability of the rank-2 Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle associated to $(C,(A,V))$ on $X$. Under certain ass…
Consider an ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $N\geq 2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $D$ be a smooth divisor in the complete linear system of $L$. We construct reflexive sheaves on $X$ by an elementary transformation of a trivial bundle on $X$ along certain globally generated torsion-free sheaves on $D$. The dual reflexive sheaves are called the Lazarsfeld-Mukai reflexive sheaves. We prove the $μ_L$-(semi)stability of such reflexive sheaves under certain conditions.
In this paper, we say that a rank 2 bundle splits if it is given by an extension of two line bundles. In the previous works, we gave a necessary condition for Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles of rank 2 to split, under a numerical condition ([W2], Theorem 3.1). We gave the splitting types of them on a smooth quartic hypersurface in P3 ([W2], Proposition 3.1) as a corollary of it. However, the assertion of it contains a few mistakes. In this paper, we correct them, and give an application of the results in [W2].
We prove two results. First, we establish that the normal bundle of any smooth curve of genus 7 having maximal Clifford index is stable. Note that 7 is the smallest genus for which such a result could possibly hold. We then show that rank four Lazarsfeld-Mukai vector bundles on a curve that lies on a general K3 surface are stable. Both results have consequences for Mercat's conjecture on higher rank vector bundles on generic curves.
Given an ample line bundle L on a K3 surface S, we study the slope stability with respect to L of rank-3 Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles associated with complete, base point free nets of type g^2_d on curves C in the linear system |L|. When d is large enough and C is general, we obtain a dimensional statement for the variety W^2_d(C). If the Brill-Noether number is negative, we prove that any g^2_d on any smooth, irreducible curve in |L| is contained in a g^r_e which is induced from a line bundle on S, thus answering a conjecture of Donagi and Morrison. Applications towards transversality of Brill-No…
Let S be a K3 surface and assume for simplicity that it does not contain any (-2)-curve. Using coherent systems, we express every non-simple Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle on S as an extension of two sheaves of some special type, that we refer to as generalized Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. This has interesting consequences concerning the Brill-Noether theory of curves C lying on S. From now on, let g denote the genus of C and A be a complete linear series of type g^r_d on C such that d<= g-1 and the corresponding Brill-Noether number is negative. First, we focus on the cases where A computes the Cliffor…
Let $g$ and $c$ be any integers satisfying $g\geq3$ and $0\leq c\leq \lfloor\frac{g-1}{2}\rfloor$. It is known that there exists a polarized K3 surface $(X,H)$ such that $X$ is a K3 surface of Picard number 2, and $H$ is a very ample line bundle on $X$ of sectional genus $g$ and Clifford index $c$, by Johnsen and Knutsen([J-K] and [Kn]). In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles of rank 2 associated with a smooth curve $C$ belonging to the linear system $|H|$ and a base point free pencil on $C$ not to be $H$-slope stable.
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible projective curve and let $(L,H^0(C,L))$ be a complete and generated linear series on $C$. Denote by $M_L$ the kernel of the evaluation map $H^0(C,L)\otimes\mathcal O_C\to L$. The exact sequence $0\to M_L\to H^0(C,L)\otimes\mathcal O_C\to L\to 0$ fits into a commutative diagram that we call the Butler's diagram. This diagram induces in a natural way a multiplication map on global sections $m_W: W^{\vee}\otimes H^0(K_C)\to H^0(S^{\vee}\otimes K_C)$, where $W\subseteq H^0(C,L)$ is a subspace and $S^{\vee}$ is the dual of a subbundle $S\subset M_L$. When the subbund…
We use homological methods to establish a formal criterion for Generic Vanishing, in the sense originated by Green and Lazarsfeld and pursued further by Hacon and the first author, but in the context of an arbitrary Fourier-Mukai correspondence. For smooth projective varieties we apply this to deduce a Kodaira-type generic vanishing theorem for adjoint bundles of the form $K_X + L$ with $L$ a nef line bundle, and in fact a more general generic Nadel-type vanishing theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves. Still in the context of the Picard variety, the same method generates various other generic v…
We observe that the proof of the Bogomolov stable restriction theorem can be adapted to give an ampleness criterion for globally generated rank 2 vector bundles on certain surfaces. This applies to the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, to congruences of lines in P^3, and possibly to the construction of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle (help welcome!).
Let $(X,H)$ be a polarized K3 surface with $\mathrm{Pic}(X) = \mathbb Z H$, and let $C\in |H|$ be a smooth curve of genus $g$. We give an upper bound on the dimension of global sections of a semistable vector bundle on $C$. This allows us to compute the higher rank Clifford indices of $C$ with high genus. In particular, when $g\geq r^2\geq 4$, the rank $r$ Clifford index of $C$ can be computed by the restriction of Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on $X$ corresponding to line bundles on the curve $C$. This is a generalization of the result by Green and Lazarsfeld for curves on K3 surfaces to higher ra…
A key result for syzygies of curves is Voisin's proof of Green's conjecture for the canonical embedding of a general curve of any genus. Her primary tools were the Lazarsfeld Mukai bundle on a K3 surface and a representation of Koszul cohomology on the Hilbert scheme of points on the surface. In this note we construct representations of the Koszul complex on Grassmann varieties; Voisin's setup arises as the inverse image of one of the maps. Using a different map, we give a substantially shorter proof of Voisin's result for K3 surfaces of even sectional genus.
Let $S$ be a K3 surface, $C$ a smooth curve on $S$ with $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ ample, and $A$ a base-point free $g^2_d$ on $C$ of small degree. We use Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles to prove that $A$ is cut out by the global sections of a rank 1 torsion-free sheaf $\mathcal{G}$ on $S$. Furthermore, we show that $c_1(\mathcal{G})$ with one exception is adapted to $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ and satisfies $\mathrm{Cliff}(c_1(\mathcal{G})_{|C})\leq\mathrm{Cliff}(A)$, thereby confirming a conjecture posed by Donagi and Morrison. We also show that the same methods can be used to give a simple proof of the conjecture…
