Vector bundles, dualities, and classical geometry on a curve of genus two

Let $C$ be a curve of genus two. We denote by $SU_C(3)$ the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 3 and trivial determinant over $C$, and by $J^d$ the variety of line bundles of degree $d$ on $C$. In particular, $J^1$ has a canonical theta divisor $Θ$. The space $SU_C(3)$ is a double cover of $P^8=|3Θ|$ branched along a sextic hypersurface, the Coble sextic. In the dual $\check{P}^8=|3Θ|^*$, where $J^1$ is embedded, there is a unique cubic hypersurface singular along $J^1$, the Coble cubic. The Universal Kummer Threefold

The universal Kummer threefold is a 9-dimensional variety that represents the total space of the 6-dimensional family of Kummer threefolds in 7-dimensional projective space. We compute defining polynomials for three versions of this family, over the Satake hypersurface, over the Göpel variety, and over the reflection representation of type E7. Discriminants of Theta-Representations

Tevelev has given a remarkable explicit formula for the discriminant of a complex simple Lie algebra, which can be defined as the equation of the dual hypersurface of the minimal nilpotent orbit, or of the so-called adjoint variety. In this paper we extend this formula to the setting of graded Lie algebras, and express the equation of the corresponding dual hypersurfaces in terms of the reflections in the little Weyl groups, the associated complex reflection groups. This explains for example why the codegree of the Grassmannian $G(4, 8)$ is equal to the number of roots of $\mathfrak{e}_7$ .

Orbit parametrizations of theta characteristics on hypersurfaces over arbitrary fields

It is well-known that theta characteristics on smooth plane curves over a field of characteristic different from two are in bijection with certain smooth complete intersections of three quadrics. We generalize this bijection to possibly singular hypersurfaces of any dimension over arbitrary fields including those of characteristic two. It is accomplished in terms of linear orbits of tuples of symmetric matrices instead of smooth complete intersections of quadrics. An Index Theorem for Modules on a Hypersurface Singularity

A topological interpretation of Hochster's Theta pairing of two modules on a hypersurface ring is given in terms of linking numbers. This generalizes results of M. Hochster and proves a conjecture of J. Steenbrink. As a corollary we get that the Theta pairing vanishes for isolated hypersurface singularities in an odd number of variables, as was conjectured by H. Dao.

On intersections of symmetric determinantal varieties and theta characteristics of canonical curves

From a block-diagonal $(n+1) \times (m+1) \times (m+1)$ tensor symmetric in the last two entries one obtains two varieties: an intersection of symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces $X$ in $n$-dimensional projective space, and an intersection of quadrics $\mathfrak{C}$ in $m$-dimensional projective space. Under mild technical assumptions, we characterize the accidental singularities of $X$ in terms of $\mathfrak{C}$. On the vanishing of Hochster's theta invariant

Hochster's theta invariant is defined for a pair of finitely generated modules on a hypersurface ring having only an isolated singularity. Up to a sign, it agrees with the Euler invariant of a pair of matrix factorizations. Working over the complex numbers, Buchweitz and van Straten have established an interesting connection between Hochster's theta invariant and the classical linking form on the link of the singularity. Modular forms from Noether-Lefschetz theory

We enumerate smooth rational curves on very general Weierstrass fibrations over hypersurfaces in projective space. The generating functions for these numbers lie in the ring of classical modular forms. The method of proof uses topological intersection products on a period stack and the cohomological theta correspondence of Kudla and Millson for special cycles on a locally symmetric space of orthogonal type. The results here apply only in base degree 1, but heuristics for higher base degree match predictions from the topological string partition function.
