We describe a locally trivial quantum principal U(1)-bundle over the quantum space S^2_{pq} which is a noncommutative analogue of the usual Hopf bundle. We also provide results concerning the structure of its total space algebra (irreducible *-representations and topological K-groups) and its Galois aspects (Galois property, existence of a strong connection, non-cleftness).
We translate some fundamental properties satisfied by topological principal bundles into the setting of Hopf-Galois extensions. The properties are: functoriality, homotopy, and triviality. The main new concept of the paper is the homotopy equivalence of Hopf-Galois extensions. We work in the particular case where the subalgebra of coinvariants is central but without any restriction on the Hopf algebras coacting on the quantum principal bundle. We examine in detail the case when the Hopf algebra is one of Sweedler or Taft's finite-dimensional Hopf algebras.
It is shown that every quantum principal bundle with a compact structure group is a Hopf-Galois extension. This property naturally extends to the level of general differential structures, so that every differential calculus over a quantum principal bundle with a compact structure group is a graded-differential variant of the Hopf-Galois extension.
Given a group G, we use involutary Hopf G-coalgebras to define a scalar invariant of flat G-bundles over 3-manifolds. When G=1, this invariant equals to the one of 3-manifolds constructed by Kuperberg from involutary Hopf algebras. We give examples which show that this invariant is not trivial.
We construct a quantum version of the SU(2) Hopf bundle $S^7 \to S^4$. The quantum sphere $S^7_q$ arises from the symplectic group $Sp_q(2)$ and a quantum 4-sphere $S^4_q$ is obtained via a suitable self-adjoint idempotent $p$ whose entries generate the algebra $A(S^4_q)$ of polynomial functions over it. This projection determines a deformation of an (anti-)instanton bundle over the classical sphere $S^4$. We compute the fundamental $K$-homology class of $S^4_q$ and pair it with the class of $p$ in the $K$-theory getting the value -1 for the topological charge. There is a right coaction of $SU…
We present two classes of examples of Hopf algebroids associated with noncommutative principal bundles. The first comes from deforming the principal bundle while leaving unchanged the structure Hopf algebra. The second is related to deforming a quantum homogeneous space; this needs a careful deformation of the structure Hopf algebra in order to preserve the compatibilities between the Hopf algebra operations.
We show that the matrix embeddings in Bratteli diagrams are iterated direct sums of Hopf-Galois extensions (quantum principle bundles) for certain abelian groups. The corresponding strong universal connections are computed. We show that $ M_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ is a trivial quantum principle bundle for the Hopf algebra $ \mathbb{C}[\mathbb{Z}_{n} \times \mathbb{Z}_{n}] $. We conclude with an application relating known calculi on groups to calculi on matrices.
We define locally trivial quantum vector bundles (QVB) and QVB associated to locally trivial quantum principal fibre bundles. There exists a differential structure on the associated vector bundle coming from the differential structure on the principal bundle, which allows to define connections on the associated vector bundle associated to connections on the principal bundle.
Coactions of Hopf C*-bimodules simultaneously generalize coactions of Hopf C*-algebras and actions of groupoids. Following an approach of Baaj and Skandalis, we construct reduced crossed products and establish a duality for fine coactions. Examples of coactions arise from Fell bundles on groupoids and actions of a groupoid on bundles of C*-algebras. Continuous Fell bundles on an etale groupoid correspond to coactions of the reduced groupoid algebra, and actions of a groupoid on a continuous bundle of C*-algebras correspond to coactions of the function algebra.
The paper presents applications of Toeplitz algebras in Noncommutative Geometry. As an example, a quantum Hopf fibration is given by gluing trivial U(1) bundles over quantum discs (or, synonymously, Toeplitz algebras) along their boundaries. The construction yields associated quantum line bundles over the generic Podles spheres which are isomorphic to those from the well-known Hopf fibration of quantum SU(2). The relation between these two versions of quantum Hopf fibrations is made precise by giving an isomorphism in the category of right U(1)-comodules and left modules over the C*-algebra of…
This paper presents an analysis of the set of connections and covariant derivatives on a U(1) quantum Hopf bundle on the standard Podles sphere, whose total space quantum SU(2) is equipped with the 3d left covariant differential calculus by Woronowicz. The introduction of a Hodge duality on the exterior algebras on both total and base space of the bundle allows for the study of Laplacians and of gauged Laplacians.
These are the expanded notes of a course given at the Summer school "Geometric, topological and algebraic methods for quantum field theory" held at Villa de Leyva, Colombia in July 2015. We first give an introduction to non-commutative geometry and to the language of Hopf algebras. We next build up a theory of non-commutative principal fiber bundles and consider various aspects of such objects. Finally, we illustrate the theory using the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and related Hopf algebras.
We show that the Ehresmann-Schauenburg bialgebroid of a quantum principal bundle $P$ or Hopf Galois extension with structure quantum group $H$ is in fact a left Hopf algebroid $L(P,H)$. We show further that if $H$ is coquasitriangular then $L(P,H)$ has an antipode map $S$ obeying certain minimal axioms. Trivial quantum principal bundles or cleft Hopf Galois extensions with base $B$ are known to be cocycle cross products $B\#_σH$ for a cocycle-action pair ($\vartriangleright$,$σ$) and we look at these of a certain `associative type' where $ \vartriangleright$ is an actual action. In this case a…
Following the approach of Budzyński and Kondracki, we define covariant differential algebras and connections on locally trivial quantum principal fibre bundles. We also consider covariant derivatives, connection forms and curvatures and explore the relations between these notions. As an example, a U(1) quantum principal bundle over a glued quantum sphere and a connection in this bundle is constructed. This connection may be interpreted as a q-deformed Dirac monopole.
The irreducible *-representations of the polynomial algebra O(S^3_{pq}) of the quantum 3-sphere introduced by Calow and Matthes are classified. The K-groups of its universal C*-algebra are shown to coincide with their classical counterparts. The U(1)-action on O(S^3_{pq}) corresponding for p=1=q to the classical Hopf fibration is proven to be Galois (free). The thus obtained locally trivial Hopf-Galois extension is shown to be relatively projective (admitting a strong connection) and non-cleft. The latter is proven by determining an appropriate Chern-Connes pairing.
We study infinitesimal gauge transformations of an equivariant noncommutative principal bundle as a braided Lie algebra of derivations. For this, we analyse general $K$-braided Hopf and Lie algebras, for $K$ a (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra of symmetries, and study their representations as braided derivations. We then study Drinfeld twist deformations of braided Hopf algebras and of Lie algebras of infinitesimal gauge transformations. We give examples coming from deformations of abelian and Jordanian type. In particular we explicitly describe the braided Lie algebra of gauge transformations of…
Quantum principal bundles or principal comodule algebras are re-interpreted as principal bundles within a framework of Synthetic Noncommutative Differential Geometry. More specifically, the notion of a noncommutative principal bundle within a braided monoidal category is introduced and it is shown that a noncommutative principal bundle in the category opposite to the category of vector spaces is the same as a faithfully flat Hopf-Galois extension.
We consider noncommutative line bundles associated with the Hopf fibrations of SUq(2) over all Podles spheres and with a locally trivial Hopf fibration of S^3_{pq}. These bundles are given as finitely generated projective modules associated via 1-dimensional representations of U(1) with Galois-type extensions encoding the principal fibrations of SUq(2) and S^3_{pq}. We show that the Chern numbers of these modules coincide with the winding numbers of representations defining them.
We build an SU(2)-Hopf bundle over a quantum toric four-sphere whose radius is non central. The construction is carried out using local methods in terms of sheaves of Hopf-Galois extensions. The associated instanton bundle is presented and endowed with a connection with anti-selfdual curvature.
We study gauged Laplacian operators on line bundles on a quantum 2-dimensional sphere. Symmetry under the (co)-action of a quantum group allows for their complete diagonalization. These operators describe `excitations moving on the quantum sphere' in the field of a magnetic monopole. The energies are not invariant under the exchange monopole/antimonopole, that is under inverting the direction of the magnetic field. There are potential applications to models of quantum Hall effect.
In other to study connections and gauge theories on noncommutative spaces it is useful to use the local trivializations of principal bundles. In this note we show how to use noncommutative localization theory to describe a simple version of cocycle data for the bundles on noncommutative schemes with Hopf algebras in the role of the structure group which locally look like Hopf algebraic smash products. We also show how to use these Čech cocycles for associated vector bundles. We sketch briefly some examples related to quantum groups.
If P, B, H are the algebras of the total space, the base space, and the structure group of a locally trivial principal fibre bundle (QPFB), left (right) gauge transformations are defined as automorphisms of the left (right) B-module P which are adapted to the coaction of the Hopf algebra H and to the covering related to the local trivializations. Covariant derivatives on a QPFB are always transformed into covariant derivatives. This is true for connections only for special choices of the differential structure on H and/or if one restricts to algebra automorphisms. There are analogues of the cl…
Any etale Lie groupoid G is completely determined by its associated convolution algebra C_c(G) equipped with the natural Hopf algebroid structure. We extend this result to the generalized morphisms between etale Lie groupoids: we show that any principal H-bundle P over G is uniquely determined by the associated C_c(G)-C_c(H)-bimodule C_c(P) equipped with the natural coalgebra structure. Furthermore, we prove that the functor C_c gives an equivalence between the Morita category of etale Lie groupoids and the Morita category of locally grouplike Hopf algebroids.
The leitmotiv of this review is noncommutative principal U(1)-bundles and associated line bundles. In the first part I give a brief introduction to Hopf-Galois theory and its applications, from field extensions to principal group actions. I then recall Woronowicz' definition of compact quantum group and the notion of noncommutative principal bundle. When the structure group is U(1), there is a construction due to Pimsner that allows to get the total space of a "bundle" (more precisely, a strongly graded C*-algebra) from the base space and a noncommutative "line bundle" (a self-Morita equivalen…
Principal comodule algebras can be thought of as objects representing principal bundles in non-commutative geometry. A crucial component of a principal comodule algebra is a strong connection map. For some applications it suffices to prove that such a map exists, but for others, such as computing the associated bundle projectors or Chern-Galois characters, an explicit formula for a strong connection is necessary. It has been known for some time how to construct a strong connection map on a multi-pullback comodule algebra from strong connections on multi-pullback components, but the known expli…
We study noncommutative principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) in the context of coquasitriangular Hopf algebras and their monoidal category of comodule algebras. When the total space is quasi-commutative, and thus the base space subalgebra is central, we define the gauge group as the group of vertical automorphisms or equivalently as the group of equivariant algebra maps. We study Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle) deformations of Hopf-Galois extensions and show that the gauge group of the twisted extension is isomorphic to the gauge group of the initial extension. In particular, noncommutative p…
An algebraic framework for noncommutative bundles with (quantum) homogeneous fibres is proposed. The framework relies on the use of principal coalgebra extensions which play the role of principal bundles in noncommutative geometry which might be additionally equipped with a Hopf algebra symmetry. The proposed framework is supported by two examples of noncommutative $\mathbb{C} P_q^1$-bundles: the quantum flag manifold viewed as a bundle with a generic Podleś sphere as a fibre, and the quantum twistor bundle viewed as a bundle over the quantum 4-sphere of Bonechi, Ciccoli and Tarlini.
Two hierarchies of quantum principal bundles over quantum real projective spaces are constructed. One hierarchy contains bundles with U(1) as a structure group, the other has the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ as a fibre. Both hierarchies are obtained by the process of prolongation from bundles with the cyclic group of order 2 as a fibre. The triviality or otherwise of these bundles is determined by using a general criterion for a prolongation of a comodule algebra to be a cleft Hopf-Galois extension.
A fibre product construction is used to give a description of quantum line bundles over the generic Podles spheres by gluing two quantum discs along their boundaries. Representatives of the corresponding $K_0$-classes are given in terms of 1-dimensional projections belonging to the C*-algebra, and in terms of analogues of the classical Bott projections. The $K_0$-classes of quantum line bundles derived from the generic Hopf fibration of quantum SU(2) are determined and the index pairing is computed. It is argued that taking the projections obtained from the fibre product construction yields a …
The ${\rm SU}(2)$-prolongation of the Hopf fibration $S^3\to S^2$ is a trivializable principal ${\rm SU}(2)$-bundle. We present a noncommutative deformation of this bundle to a quantum principal ${\rm SU}_q(2)$-bundle that is not trivializable. On the other hand, we show that the ${\rm SU}_q(2)$-bundle is piecewise trivializable with respect to the closed covering of $S^2$ by two hemispheres intersecting at the equator.
A cotensor product A\Box_H P of an H-Hopf Galois extension A and a C-coalgebra Galois extension P, such that P is an (H,C)-bicomodule, is analyzed. Conditions are stated, when A\Box_H P is a C-coalgebra Galois extension and when there exists a strong connection on A\Box_H P. Two examples are given, in both, A and P are Matsumoto spheres, and H=C=C(U(1)).
This manuscript is devoted to the study of the concept of a generating subset (a.k.a. Hopf image of a morphism) in the setting of locally compact quantum groups. The aim of this paper is to provide an accurate description of the Hopf image of a given morphism. We extend and unify the previously existing approaches for compact and discrete quantum groups and present some results that can shed light on some local perspective in the theory of quantum groups. In particular, we provide a characterization of fullness of Hopf image in the language of partial actions as well as in representation-theor…
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra. The left and the right integrals on $A$ are related by means of a distinguished group-like element $δ$ of $A$. Similarly, there is this element $\hatδ$ in the dual Hopf algebra $\hat A$. Radford showed that $$S^4(a)=δ^{-1}(\hatδ\triangleright a \triangleleft \hatδ^{-1})δ$$ for all $a$ in $A$ where $S$ is the antipode of $A$ and where $\triangleright$ and $\triangleleft$ are used to denote the standard left and right actions of $\hat A$ on $A$. The formula still holds for multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals (algebraic quantum groups). In the the…
In this article we propose a new and so-called holomorphic deformation scheme for locally convex algebras and Hopf algebras. Essentially we regard converging power series expansion of a deformed product on a locally convex algebra, thus giving the means to actually insert complex values for the deformation parameter. Moreover we establish a topological duality theory for locally convex Hopf algebras. Examples coming from the theory of quantum groups are reconsidered within our holomorphic deformation scheme and topological duality theory. It is shown that all the standard quantum groups compri…
We discuss a possible noncommutative generalization of the notion of an equivariant vector bundle. Let $A$ be a $\mathbb{K}$-algebra, $M$ a left $A$-module, $H$ a Hopf $\mathbb{K}$-algebra, $δ:A\to H\otimes A:=H\otimes_{\mathbb{K}} A$ an algebra coaction, and let $(H\otimes A)_δ$ denote $H\otimes A$ with the right $A$-module structure induced by~$δ$. The usual definitions of an equivariant vector bundle naturally lead, in the context of $\mathbb{K}$-algebras, to an $(H\otimes A)$-module homomorphism \[Θ:H\otimes M\to (H\otimes A)_δ\otimes_AM\] that fulfills some appropriate conditions. On the …
We construct noncommutative principal bundles deforming principal bundles with a Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle). If the twist is associated with the structure group then we have a deformation of the fibers. If the twist is associated with the automorphism group of the principal bundle, then we obtain noncommutative deformations of the base space as well. Combining the two twist deformations we obtain noncommutative principal bundles with both noncommutative fibers and base space. More in general, the natural isomorphisms proving the equivalence of a closed monoidal category of modules and its twis…
We study the Ehresmann--Schauenburg bialgebroid of a noncommutative principal bundle as a quantization of the classical gauge groupoid of a principal bundle. When the base algebra is in the centre of the total space algebra, the gauge group of the noncommutative principal bundle is isomorphic to the group of bisections of the bialgebroid. In particular we consider Galois objects (non-trivial noncommutative bundles over a point in a sense) for which the bialgebroid is a Hopf algebra. For these we give a crossed module structure for the bisections and the automorphisms of the bialgebroid. Exampl…
We propose a sheaf-theoretic approach to the theory of differential calculi on quantum principal bundles over non-affine bases. After recalling the affine case we define differential calculi on sheaves of comodule algebras as sheaves of covariant bimodules together with a morphism of sheaves -- the differential -- such that the Leibniz rule and surjectivity hold locally. The main class of examples is given by covariant calculi over quantum flag manifolds, which we provide via an explicit Ore extension construction. In a second step we introduce principal covariant calculi by requiring a local …
The Dirac q-monopole connection is used to compute projector matrices of quantum Hopf line bundles for arbitrary winding number. The Chern-Connes pairing of cyclic cohomology and K-theory is computed for the winding number -1. The non-triviality of this pairing is used to conclude that the quantum principal Hopf fibration is non-cleft. Among general results, we provide a left-right symmetric characterization of the canonical strong connections on quantum principal homogeneous spaces with an injective antipode. We also provide for arbitrary strong connections on algebraic quantum principal bund…
Quantum affine bundles are quantum principal bundles with affine quantum structure groups. A general theory of quantum affine bundles is presented. In particular, a detailed analysis of differential calculi over these bundles is performed, including the description of a natural differential calculus over the structure affine quantum group. A particular attention is given to the study of the specific properties of quantum affine connections and several purely quantum phenomena appearing in the context of quantum affine bundles. Various interesting constructions are presented. In particular, the…
We study the Ehresmann--Schauenburg bialgebroid of a noncommutative principal bundle as a quantization of the gauge groupoid of a classical principal bundle. We show that the gauge group of the noncommutative bundle is isomorphic to the group of bisections of the bialgebroid, and we give a crossed module structure for the bisections and the automorphisms of the bialgebroid. Examples illustrating these constructions include: Galois objects of Taft algebras, a monopole bundle over a quantum spheres and a not faithfully flat Hopf--Galois extension of commutative algebras. The latter two examples …
The quantum double for the quantized BRST superalgebra is studied. The corresponding R-matrix is explicitly constucted. The Hopf algebras of the double form an analytical variety with coordinates described by the canonical deformation parameters. This provides the possibility to construct the nontrivial quantization of the proper time supergroup cotangent bundle. The group-like classical limit for this quantization corresponds to the generic super Lie bialgebra of the double.
This is an introduction to work on the generalisation to quantum groups of Mackey's approach to quantisation on homogeneous spaces. We recall the bicrossproduct models of the author, which generalise the quantum double. We describe the general extension theory of Hopf algebras and the nonAbelian cohomology spaces $\CH^2(H,A)$ which classify them. They form a new kind of topological quantum number in physics which is visible only in the quantum world. These same cross product quantisations can also be viewed as trivial quantum principal bundles in quantum group gauge theory. We also relate this…
The (left coalgebra) line bundle associated to the quantum Hopf fibration of any quantum two-sphere is shown to be a finitely generated projective module. The corresponding projector is constructed and its monopole charge is computed. It is shown that the Dirac $q$-monopole connection on any quantum two-sphere induces the Grassmannian connection built with this projector.
We define a quantum generalization of the algebra of functions over an associated vector bundle of a principal bundle. Here the role of a quantum principal bundle is played by a Hopf-Galois extension. Smash products of an algebra times a Hopf algebra H are particular instances of these extensions, and in these cases we are able to define a differential calculus over their associated vector bundles without requiring the use of a (bicovariant) differential structure over H. Moreover, if H is coquasitriangular, it coacts naturally on the associated bundle, and the differential structure is covari…
We construct covariant $q$-deformed holomorphic structures for all finitely-generated relative Hopf modules over the irreducible quantum flag manifolds endowed with their Heckenberger--Kolb calculi. In the classical limit these reduce to modules of sections of holomorphic homogeneous vector bundles over irreducible flag manifolds. For the case of simple relative Hopf modules, we show that this covariant holomorphic structure is unique. This generalises earlier work of Majid, Khalkhali, Landi, and van Suijlekom for line modules of the Podleś sphere, and subsequent work of Khalkhali and Moatadel…
We reformulate the concept of connection on a Hopf-Galois extension $B\subseteq P$ in order to apply it in computing the Chern-Connes pairing between the cyclic cohomology $HC^{2n} (B)$ and $K_0 (B)$. This reformulation allows us to show that a Hopf-Galois extension admitting a strong connection is projective and left faithfully flat. It also enables us to conclude that a strong connection is a Cuntz-Quillen-type bimodule connection. To exemplify the theory, we construct a strong connection (super Dirac monopole) to find out the Chern-Connes pairing for the super line bundles associated to sup…
We describe Laplacian operators on the quantum group SUq (2) equipped with the four dimensional bicovariant differential calculus of Woronowicz as well as on the quantum homogeneous space S2q with the restricted left covariant three dimensional differential calculus. This is done by giving a family of Hodge dualities on both the exterior algebras of SUq (2) and S2q . We also study gauged Laplacian operators acting on sections of line bundles over the quantum sphere.
