Building on work of Crew, we give a rigid cohomological analogue of the main result of Deligne's "Weil II"; this makes it possible to give a purely p-adic proof of the Weil conjectures. Ingredients include a p-adic analogue of Laumon's application of the geometric Fourier transform in the l-adic setting, as well as recent results on p-adic differential equations, due to Andre, Christol, Crew, Kedlaya, Matsuda, Mebkhout, and Tsuzuki.
We establish duality results for the cohomology of the Weil group of a $p$-adic field, analogous to, but more general than, results from Galois cohomology. We prove a duality theorem for discrete Weil modules, which implies Tate-Nakayama Duality. We define Weil-smooth cohomology for varieties over local fields, and prove a duality theorem for the cohomology of $\G_m$ on a smooth, proper curve with a rational point. This last theorem is analogous to, and implies, a classical duality theorem for such curves.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
We study the functor of Weil restriction in the category of Huber's adic spaces and in the category of Berkovich spaces. We prove criteria for the representability of these functors in the respective categories. As an application of adic Weil restrictions, we prove that adic Néron models behave well with respect to tamely ramified base change.
In this paper, using p-adic integration with values in spaces of modular forms, we construct the p-adic analogue of Weil's elliptic functions according to Eisenstein in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and and Kronecker". This construction extends Serre's p-adic family of Eisenstein series in "Formes modulaires et fonctions zêta p-adiques". We show that the power series expansion of Weil's elliptic functions also exists in the p-adic case.
We define l-adic analogs of classical Weil numbers in connexion both with complex or l-adic imbeddings of number fields and real or l-adic absolute values. As an application we give some consequences related to the Iwasawa theory of cyclotomic towers.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $F_{\infty}$ a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $F$ which has ordinary reduction at every primes above $p$. Under various assumptions, we establish asymptotic upper bounds for the growth of Mordell-Weil rank of the abelian variety of $A$ in the said $p$-adic Lie extension. Our upper bound can be expressed in terms of invariants coming from the cyclotomic level. Motivated by this formula, we make a conjecture on an asymptotic upper bound of the growth of Mordell-Weil ranks over a $p$-adic Lie extension which is in terms…
We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.
Given a Weil-Deligne representation of the Weil group of an $\ell$-adic number field with coefficients in a domain $\mathscr{O}$, we show that its pure specializations have the same conductor. More generally, we prove that the conductors of a collection of pure representations are equal if they lift to Weil-Deligne representations over domains containing $\mathscr{O}$ and the traces of these lifts are parametrized by a pseudorepresentation over $\mathscr{O}$.
We give a proof that the Riemann hypothesis for hypersurfaces over finite fields implies the result for all smooth proper varieties, by a deformation argument which does not use the theory of Lefschetz pencils or the l-adic Fourier transform.
We investigate the $p$-adic valuation of Weil sums of the form $W_{F,d}(a)=\sum_{x \in F} ψ(x^d -a x)$, where $F$ is a finite field of characteristic $p$, $ψ$ is the canonical additive character of $F$, the exponent $d$ is relatively prime to $|F^\times|$, and $a$ is an element of $F$. Such sums often arise in arithmetical calculations and also have applications in information theory. For each $F$ and $d$ one would like to know $V_{F,d}$, the minimum $p$-adic valuation of $W_{F,d}(a)$ as $a$ runs through the elements of $F$. We exclude exponents $d$ that are congruent to a power of $p$ modulo …
We prove a p-adic analogue of Wüstholz's analytic subgroup theorem. We apply this result to show that a curve embedded in its Jacobian intersects the p-adic closure of the Mordell-Weil group transversely whenever the latter has rank equal to 1. This allows us to give some theoretical justification to Chabauty techniques applied to finding rational points on curves whose Jacobian has Mordel-Weil group of rank 1.
Suppose that $M$ is an even lattice with dual $M^{*}$ and level $N$. Then the group $Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, which is the unique non-trivial double cover of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, admits a representation $ρ_{M}$, called the Weil representation, on the space $\mathbb{C}[M^{*}/M]$. The main aim of this paper is to show how the formulae for the $ρ_{M}$-action of a general element of $Mp_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ can be obtained by a direct evaluation which does not depend on ``external objects'' such as theta functions. We decompose the Weil representation $ρ_{M}$ into $p$-parts, in which each $p$-part can be…
We calculate the total derived functor for the map from the Weil-etale site introduced by Lichtenbaum to the etale site for varieties over finite fields. In particular, there is a long exact sequence relating Weil-etale cohomology and etale cohomology. In the second half of the paper, we apply this to study the Weil-etale cohomology of the motivic complex for smooth and projective varieties. These groups are expected to be finitely generated, to give an integral model for l-adic cohomology, and to be related to special values of the zeta function. We give necessary and sufficient conditions fo…
We give a new formula for the Artin conductor of an $\ell$-adic representation of the Weil group of a local field of residue characteristic $p\neq\ell$.
Given a Weil-Deligne representation with coefficients in a domain, we prove the rigidity of the structures of the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the Weyl modules associated to its pure specializations. Moreover, we show that the structures of the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the Weyl modules attached to a collection of pure representations are rigid if these pure representations lift to Weil-Deligne representations over domains containing a domain $\mathscr{O}$ and a pseudorepresentation over $\mathscr{O}$ parametrizes the traces of these lifts.
We study the relation of the middle convolution to the $\ell$-adic Fourier transformation in the étale context. Using Katz' work and Laumon's theory of local Fourier transformations we obtain a detailed description of the local monodromy and the determinant of Katz' middle convolution functor $\MC_χ$ in the tame case. The theory of local $ε$-constants then implies that the property of an étale sheaf of having an at most quadratic determinant is often preserved under $\MC_χ$ if $χ$ is quadratic.
In this note, we investigate the p-adic behavior of Weil numbers in the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z\_p$-extension of $\mathbb Q(ζ\_p).$ We determlne the characteristic ideal of the quotient of semi-local units by Weil numbers in terms of the characteristic ideals of some classical modules that appear in Iwasawa Theory.
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
We define and study an $\ell$-adic Fourier transform for a relative version of Banach-Colmez spaces (over a perfectoid space which is not necessarily a geometric point), which can be thought of as some analytic analogue of the $\ell$-adic Fourier transform for unipotent perfect group schemes. We explicitly describe it on some examples.
The $p$-adic $q$-integral (= $I_q$-integral) was defined by author in the previous paper [1, 3]. In this paper, we consider $I_q$-Fourier transform and investigate some properties which are related to this transform.
Laumon introduced the local Fourier transform for $\ell$-adic Galois representations of local fields, of equal characteristic $p$ different from $\ell$, as a powerful tool to study the Fourier-Deligne transform of $\ell$-adic sheaves over the affine line. In this article, we compute explicitly the local Fourier transform of monomial representations satisfying a certain ramification condition, and deduce Laumon's formula relating the epsilon factor to the determinant of the local Fourier transform under the same condition.
We give a dynamical construction of an infinite sequence of distinct totally $p$-adic algebraic numbers whose Weil heights tend to the limit $\frac{\log p}{p-1}$, thus giving a new proof of a result of Bombieri-Zannier. The proof is essentially equivalent to the explicit calculation of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing of the maps $σ(x)=x^2$ and $ϕ_p(x)=\frac{1}{p}(x^p-x)$.
By the theory of Colmez and Fontaine, a de Rham representation of the Galois group of a local field roughly corresponds to a representation of the Weil-Deligne group equipped with an admissible filtration on the underlying vector space. Using a modification of the classical local Langlands correspondence, we associate with any pair consisting of a Weil-Deligne group representation and a type of a filtration (admissible or not) a specific locally algebraic representation of a general linear group. We advertise the conjecture that this pair comes from a de Rham representation if and only if the …
Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. We show that every Schwartz function on F, with values in an algebraic closure of Q_p, is the uniform limit of a sequence of Schwartz functions, whose Fourier transforms tend uniformly to 0. The proof uses the notion of q-binomial coefficients and some classical identities between them.
We compute the Fourier expansion of vector valued Eisenstein series for the Weil representation associated to an even lattice. To this end, we define certain twists by Dirichlet characters of the usual Eisenstein series associated to isotropic elements in the discriminant form of the underlying lattice. These twisted functions still form a generating system for the space of Eisenstein series but have better multiplicative properties than the individual Eisenstein series. We adapt a method of Bruinier and Kuss to obtain algebraic formulas for the Fourier coefficients of the twisted Eisenstein s…
We give a method for the computation of integral points on a hyperelliptic curve of odd degree over the rationals whose genus equals the Mordell-Weil rank of its Jacobian. Our approach consists of a combination of the $p$-adic approximation techniques introduced in previous work with the Mordell-Weil sieve
We give coefficient formulas for antisymmetric vector-valued cusp forms with rational Fourier coefficients for the Weil representation associated to a finite quadratic module. The forms we construct always span all cusp forms in weight at least three. These formulas are useful for computing explicitly with theta lifts.
In this note we give a detailed construction of a $Λ$-adic $\mathfrak{d}$-th Shintani lifting. We derive a $Λ$-adic version of Kohnen's formula relating Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms and special values of twisted L-series. As a by-product, we derive a mild generalization of such classical formulae, and also point out a relation between Fourier coefficients of $Λ$-adic $\d$-th Shintani liftings and Stark--Heegner points.
In this paper we study special bases of certain spaces of half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. We establish a criterion for the integrality of Fourier coefficients of such bases. By using recursive relations between Hecke operators, we derive relations of Fourier coefficients of each basis element and obtain congruences of the Fourier coefficients, which extend known congruences for traces of singular moduli.
We give the p-adic and F_q((t)) analogue of the real van der Corput Lemma, where the real condition of sufficient smoothness for the phase is replaced by the condition that the phase is a convergent power series. This van der Corput style result allows us, in analogy to the real situation, to study singular Fourier transforms on suitably curved (analytic) manifolds and opens the way for further applications. As one such further application we give the restriction theorem for Fourier transforms of L^p functions to suitably curved analytic manifolds over non-archimedean local fields, similar to …
The objective of this article is to give an introduction to p-adic analysis along the lines of Tate's thesis, as well as incorporating material of a more recent vintage, for example Weil groups.
In this article, we give an explicit construction of the $p$-adic Fourier transform by Schneider and Teitelbaum, which allows for the investigation of the integral property. As an application, we give a certain integral basis of the space of $K$-locally analytic functions on the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ for any finite extension $K$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, generalizing the basis constructed by Amice for locally analytic functions on $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We also use our result to prove congruences of Bernoulli-Hurwitz numbers at non-ordinary (i.e. supersingular) primes originally investigated by K…
Serre obtained the p-adic limit of the integral Fourier coefficient of modular forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ for $p=2,3,5,7$. In this paper, we extend the result of Serre to weakly holomorphic modular forms of half integral weight on $Γ_{0}(4N)$ for $N=1,2,4$. A proof is based on linear relations among Fourier coefficients of modular forms of half integral weight. As applications we obtain congruences of Borcherds exponents, congruences of quotient of Eisentein series and congruences of values of $L$-functions at a certain point are also studied. Furthermore, the congruences of the Fourier coeff…
We the study of the monodromy of local systems with bounded ramification on a punctured disc defined over a non-archimedean valued field of characteristic zero. First, we construct the local Fourier transforms and we establish their main properties. Also, we show that the Fourier transform of a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification on the affine line, is again a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification (we put that in quotes, because actually the language of perversity is not used). These foundations are then used to exhibit a natural break decomposition for local systems with bounded r…
In this paper we generalize work of Amice and Lazard from the early (nineteen) sixties. Amice determined the dual of the space of locally Qp-analytic functions on Zp and showed that it is isomorphic to the ring of rigid functions on the open unit disk over Cp. Lazard showed that this ring has a divisor theory and that the classes of closed, finitely generated, and principal ideals in this ring coincide. We study the space of locally L-analytic functions on the ring of integers in L, where L is a finite extension of Qp. We show that the dual of this space is a ring isomorphic to the ring of rig…
Let $E_{/_\Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $Np$ with $p\nmid N$ and let $f$ be its associated newform of weight 2. Denote by $f_\infty$ the $p$-adic Hida family passing though $f$, and by $F_\infty$ its $Λ$-adic Saito-Kurokawa lift. The $p$-adic family $F_\infty$ of Siegel modular forms admits a formal Fourier expansion, from which we can define a family of normalized Fourier coefficients $\{\widetilde A_T(k)\}_T$ indexed by positive definite symmetric half-integral matrices $T$ of size $2\times 2$. We relate explicitly certain global points on $E$ (coming from the theory of Stark-Heegne…
Let f be a modular form with complex multiplication. If f has critical slope, then Coleman's classicality theorem implies that there is a p-adic overconvergent generalized Hecke eigenform with the same Hecke eigenvalues as f. We give a formula for the Fourier coefficiets of this generalized Hecke eigenform. We also investigate the dimension of the generalized Hecke eigenspace of p-adic overconvergent forms containing f.
We give new proofs of two basic results in number theory: The law of quadratic reciprocity and the sign of the Gauss sum. We show that these results are encoded in the relation between the discrete Fourier transform and the action of the Weyl element in the Weil representation modulo p,q and pq.
The purpose of this note is to give a short and elementary proof of the fact, that the absolute logarithmic Weil-height is bounded from below by a positive constant for all totally p-adic numbers which are neither zero nor a root of unity. The proof is based on an idea of C. Petsche and gives the best known lower bounds in this setting. These bounds differ from the truth by a term of less than $\log(3)/p$.
We examine the Fourier coefficients of modular forms in a canonical basis for the spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights 4, 6, 8, 10, and 14, and show that these coefficients are often highly divisible by the primes 2, 3, and 5.
