Motivated by circle graphs, and the enumeration of Euler circuits, we define a one-variable ``interlace polynomial'' for any graph. The polynomial satisfies a beautiful and unexpected reduction relation, quite different from the cut and fuse reduction characterizing the Tutte polynomial.
It emerges that the interlace graph polynomial may be viewed as a special case of the Martin polynomial of an isotropic system, which underlies its connections with the circuit partition polynomial and the Kauffman brackets of a link diagram. The graph polynomial, in addition to being perhaps more broadly accessible than the Martin polynomial for isotropic systems, also has a two-variable generalization that is unknown for the Martin polynomial. We consider extremal properties of the interlace polynomial, its values for various special graphs, and evaluations which relate to basic graph properties such as the component and independence numbers.
In this work, we study the interlace polynomial as a generalization of a graph invariant to delta-matroids. We prove that the interlace polynomial satisfies the four-term relation for delta-matroids and determines thus a finite type invariant of links in the 3-sphere.
In this paper, we survey results regarding the interlace polynomial of a graph, connections to such graph polynomials as the Martin and Tutte polynomials, and generalizations to the realms of isotropic systems and delta-matroids.
Binary nullity, Euler circuits and interlace polynomials
Cohn和Lempel [J. Combin.
We generalize theories of graph, matroid, and ribbon-graph activities to delta-matroids. As a result, we obtain an activities based feasible-set expansion for a transition polynomial of delta-matroids defined by Brijder and Hoogeboom. This result yields feasible-set expansions for the two-variable Bollobás-Riordan and interlace polynomials of a delta-matroid. In the former case, the expansion obtained directly generalizes the activities expansions of the Tutte polynomial of graphs and matroids.
Interlace Polynomials: Enumeration, Unimodality, and Connections to Codes
Multimatroids generalize matroids, delta-matroids, and isotropic systems, and transition polynomials of multimatroids subsume various polynomials for these latter combinatorial structures, such as the interlace polynomial and the Tutte-Martin polynomial. We prove evaluations of the Tutte-Martin polynomial of isotropic systems from Bouchet directly and more efficiently in the context of transition polynomials of multimatroids. Moreover, we generalize some related evaluations of the transition polynomial of 4-regular graphs from Jaeger to multimatroids. These evaluations are obtained in a unifor…
A bracket polynomial for graphs, IV. Undirected Euler circuits, graph-links and multiply marked graphs
P. Ilyutko和V.O. Manturov [J.纽结理论分支18(2009),791-823].扩展括号的更大灵活性还允许比早期版本更简单的递归描述。
The Laplacian matching polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted by $\mathscr{L\hspace{-0.7mm}M}(G,x)$, is a new graph polynomial whose all roots are nonnegative real numbers. In this paper, we investigate the location of zeros of the Laplacian matching polynomials. Let $G$ be a connected graph. We show that $0$ is a root of $\mathscr{L\hspace{-0.7mm}M}(G, x)$ if and only if $G$ is a tree. We prove that the number of distinct positive zeros of $\mathscr{L\hspace{-0.7mm}M}(G,x)$ is at least equal to the length of the longest path in $G$. It is also established that the zeros of $\mathscr{L\hspace{-0.7…
Graph polynomials are polynomials assigned to graphs. Interestingly, they also arise in many areas outside graph theory as well. Many properties of graph polynomials have been widely studied. In this paper, we survey some results on the derivative and real roots of graph polynomials, which have applications in chemistry, control theory and computer science. Related to the derivatives of graph polynomials, polynomial reconstruction of the matching polynomial is also introduced.
Using the definition of colouring of $2$-edge-coloured graphs derived from $2$-edge-coloured graph homomorphism, we extend the definition of chromatic polynomial to $2$-edge-coloured graphs. We find closed forms for the first three coefficients of this polynomial that generalize the known results for the chromatic polynomial of a graph. We classify those $2$-edge-coloured graphs that have a chromatic polynomial equal to the chromatic polynomial of the underlying graph, when every vertex is incident to edges of both colours. Finally, we examine the behaviour of the roots of this polynomial, hig…
In 1994, Cornelis Hoede and Xueliang Li introduced the clique polynomial of a graph. Also, a theorem for the edge subgraph expansion for clique polynomials. In this note we present a counter example for it and explain which case it could be a valid theorem.
In a recent paper, we studied the interaction between the automorphism group of a graph and its Tutte polynomial. More precisely, we proved that certain symmetries of graphs are clearly reflected by their Tutte polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to extend this study to other graph polynomials. In particular, we prove that if a graph $G$ has a symmetry of prime order $p$, then its characteristic polynomial, with coefficients in the finite filed $\mathbb{F}_p$, is determined by the characteristic polynomial of its quotient graph $\overline G$. Similar results are also proved for some gene…
The bipartition polynomial of a graph is a generalization of many other graph polynomials, including the domination, Ising, matching, independence, cut, and Euler polynomial. We show in this paper that it is also a powerful tool for proving graph properties. In addition, we can show that the bipartition polynomial is polynomially reconstructible, which means that we can recover it from the multiset of bipartition polynomials of one-edge-deleted subgraphs.
The neighborhood polynomial of graph $G$ is the generating function for the number of vertex subsets of $G$ of which the vertices have a common neighbor in $G$. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of this polynomial under several graph operations. Specifically, we provide an explicit formula for the neighborhood polynomial of the graph obtained from a given graph $G$ by vertex attachment. We use this result to propose a recursive algorithm for the calculation of the neighborhood polynomial. Finally, we prove that the neighborhood polynomial can be found in polynomial-time in the class o…
We introduce a new bivariate polynomial which we call the defensive alliance polynomial and denote it by da(G; x, y). It is a generalization of the alliance polynomial [Carballosa et al., 2014] and the strong alliance polynomial [Carballosa et al., 2016]. We show the relation between da(G; x, y) and the alliance, the strong alliance and the induced connected subgraph [Tittmann et al., 2011] polynomials. Then, we investigate information encoded in da(G; x, y) about G. We discuss the defensive alliance polynomial for the path graphs, the cycle graphs, the star graphs, the double star graphs, the…
A k-valuation is a special type of edge k-colouring of a medial graph. Various graph polynomials, such as the Tutte, Penrose, Bollobás-Riordan, and transition polynomials, admit combinatorial interpretations and evaluations as weighted counts of k-valuations. In this paper, we consider a multivariate generating function of k-valuations. We show that this is a polynomial in k and hence defines a graph polynomial. We then show that the resulting polynomial has several desirable properties, including a recursive deletion-contraction-type definition, and specialises to the graph polynomials mentio…
In this paper, we introduce a new concept namely degree polynomial for vertices of a simple graph. This notion leads to a concept namely degree polynomial sequence which is stronger than the concept of degree sequence. After obtaining the degree polynomial sequence for some well-known graphs, we prove a theorem which gives a necessary condition for realizability of a sequence of polynomials with coefficients in positive integers. Also we calculate the degree polynomial for vertises of join, Cartesian product, tensor product, and lexicographic product of two simple graphs and for vertices of th…
By using Laurent graph polynomials instead of the usual ones, i.e. by allowing negative powers of the variables, we simplify an existing method of determining the Alon-Tarsi numbers of planar graphs.
Graph polynomials are deemed useful if they give rise to algebraic characterizations of various graph properties, and their evaluations encode many other graph invariants. Algebraic: The complete graphs $K_n$ and the complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ can be characterized as those graphs whose matching polynomials satisfy a certain recurrence relations and are related to the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials. An encoded graph invariant: The absolute value of the chromatic polynomial $χ(G,X)$ of a graph $G$ evaluated at $-1$ counts the number of acyclic orientations of $G$. In this paper we pro…
The interior polynomial is an invariant of bipartite graphs, and a part of the HOMFLY polynomial of a special alternating link coincides with the interior polynomial of the Seifert graph of the link. We extend the interior polynomial to signed bipartite graphs, and we show that, in the planar case, it is equal to a part of the HOMFLY polynomial of a naturally associated link. We also establish some other, more basic properties of this new notion. This leads to new identities involving the original interior polynomial.
The oriented chromatic polynomial of a oriented graph outputs the number of oriented $k$-colourings for any input $k$. We fully classify those oriented graphs for which the oriented graph has the same chromatic polynomial as the underlying simple graph, closing an open problem posed by Sopena. We find that such oriented graphs can be both identified and constructed in polynomial time as they are exactly the family of quasi-transitive oriented co-interval graphs. We study the analytic properties of this polynomial and show that there exist oriented graphs which have chromatic polynomials have r…
The aim of this paper is to show that any finite undirected bipartite graph can be considered as a polynomial $p \in \mathbb{N}[x]$, and any directed finite bipartite graph can be considered as a polynomial $p\in\mathbb{N}[x,y]$, and vise verse. We also show that the multiplication in semirings $\mathbb{N}[x]$, $\mathbb{N}[x,y]$ correspondences to a operations of the corresponding graphs which looks like a ``perturbed'' products of graphs. As an application, we give a new point of view to dividing in semirings $\mathbb{N}[x]$, $\mathbb{N}[x,y]$. Finally, we endow the set of all bipartite graph…
