In a recent paper, we studied the interaction between the automorphism group of a graph and its Tutte polynomial. More precisely, we proved that certain symmetries of graphs are clearly reflected by their Tutte polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to extend this study to other graph polynomials. In particular, we prove that if a graph $G$ has a symmetry of prime order $p$, then its characteristic polynomial, with coefficients in the finite filed $\mathbb{F}_p$, is determined by the characteristic polynomial of its quotient graph $\overline G$. Similar results are also proved for some generalization of the Tutte polynomial.
For Grassmann varieties, we explain how the duality between the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes arises from different positive structures.
Without imposing restrictions on a weighted graph's arc lengths, symmetry structures cannot be expected. But, they exist. To find them, the graphs are decomposed into a component that dictates all closed path properties (e.g., shortest and longest paths), and a superfluous component that can be removed. The simpler remaining graph exposes inherent symmetry structures that form the basis for all closed path properties. For certain asymmetric problems, the symmetry is that of three-cycles; for the general undirected setting it is a type of four-cycles; for general directed problems with asymmetr…
Let $c$ and $c'$ be edge or vertex colourings of a graph $G$. We say that $c'$ is less symmetric than $c$ if the stabiliser (in $\operatorname{Aut} G$) of $c'$ is contained in the stabiliser of $c$. We show that if $G$ is not a bicentred tree, then for every vertex colouring of $G$ there is a less symmetric edge colouring with the same number of colours. On the other hand, if $T$ is a tree, then for every edge colouring there is a less symmetric vertex colouring with the same number of edges. Our results can be used to characterise those graphs whose distinguishing index is larger than their d…
A general (convex) polytope $P\subset\mathbb R^d$ and its edge-graph $G_P$ can have very distinct symmetry properties. We construct a coloring (of the vertices and edges) of the edge-graph so that the combinatorial symmetry group of the colored edge-graph is isomorphic (in a natural way) to $\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathrm{GL}}(P)$, the group of linear symmetries of the polytope. We also construct an analogous coloring for $\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathrm{O}}(P)$, the group of orthogonal symmetries of $P$.
We organize a table of regular graphs with minimal diameters and minimal mean path lengths, large bisection widths and high degrees of symmetries, obtained by enumerations on supercomputers. These optimal graphs, many of which are newly discovered, may find wide applications, for example, in design of network topologies.
A coloring is distinguishing (or symmetry breaking) if no non-identity automorphism preserves it. The distinguishing threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $θ(G)$, is the minimum number of colors $k$ so that every $k$-coloring of $G$ is distinguishing. We generalize this concept to edge-coloring by defining an alternative index $θ'(G)$. We consider $θ'$ for some families of graphs and find its connection with edge-cycles of the automorphism group. Then we show that $θ'(G)=2$ if and only if $G\simeq K_{1,2}$ and $θ'(G)=3$ if and only if $G\simeq P_4, K_{1,3}$ or $K_3$. Moreover, we prove some aux…
Using the theory of equitable decompositions it is possible to decompose a matrix $M$ appropriately associated with a given graph. The result is a collection of smaller matrices whose collective eigenvalues are the same as the eigenvalues of the original matrix $M$. This is done by decomposing the matrix over a graph symmetry. Previously it was shown that a matrix can be equitably decomposed over any uniform, basic, or separable automorphism. Here we extend this theory to show that it is possible to equitably decompose a matrix over any automorphism of a graph, without restriction. Moreover, w…
The symmetries of a finite graph are described by its automorphism group; in the setting of Woronowicz's quantum groups, a notion of a quantum automorphism group has been defined by Banica capturing the quantum symmetries of the graph. In general, there are more quantum symmetries than symmetries and it is a non-trivial task to determine when this is the case for a given graph: The question is whether or not the algebra associated to the quantum automorphism group is commutative. We use Gröbner base computations in order to tackle this problem; the implementation uses GAP and the SINGULAR pack…
In 2019, Aterias et al. constructed pairs of quantum isomorphic, non-isomorphic graphs from linear constraint systems. This article deals with quantum automorphisms and quantum isomorphisms of colored versions of those graphs. We show that the quantum automorphism group of such a colored graph is the dual of the homogeneous solution group of the underlying linear constraint system. Given a vertex- and edge-colored graph with certain properties, we construct an uncolored graph that has the same quantum automorphism group as the colored graph we started with. Using those results, we obtain the f…
In this paper we continue the study of prime graphs of finite solvable groups. The prime graph, or Gruenberg-Kegel graph, of a finite group G has vertices consisting of the prime divisors of the order of G and an edge from primes p to q if and only if G contains an element of order pq. Since the discovery of a simple, purely graph theoretical characterization of the prime graphs of solvable groups in 2015 these graphs have been studied in more detail from a graph theoretic angle. In this paper we explore several new aspects of these graphs. We characterize regular reseminant graphs and study t…
In this paper we study spectral zeta functions associated to finite and infinite graphs. First we establish a meromorphic continuation of these functions under some general conditions. Then we study special values in the case of standard lattice graphs associated to free abelian groups. In particular we connect it to Catalan numbers in several ways, and obtain some non-trivial special values and functional symmetries. Furthermore we relate the values at the negative integers with the more studied Ihara zeta functions, and prove a few minor results that seem not to have been recorded before. Fi…
Poisson brackets admit infinitesimal symmetries which are encoded using oriented graphs; this construction is due to Kontsevich (1996). We formulate several open problems about combinatorial and topological properties of the graphs involved, about integrability and analytic properties of such symmetry flows (in particular, for known classes of Poisson brackets), and about cohomological, differential geometric, and quantum aspects of the theory. Keywords: Poisson bracket, Jacobi identity, infinitesimal symmetry, affine manifold, Poisson cohomology, graph complex.
Spherical Designs are finite sets of points on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d}$ with the property that the average of certain (low-degree) polynomials in these points coincides with the global average of the polynomial on $\mathbb{S}^{d}$. They are evenly distributed and often exhibit a great degree of regularity and symmetry. We point out that a spectral definition of spherical designs easily transfers to finite graphs -- these 'graphical designs' are subsets of vertices that are evenly spaced and capture the symmetries of the underlying graph (should they exist). Our main result states that good …
Current methods of graph signal processing rely heavily on the specific structure of the underlying network: the shift operator and the graph Fourier transform are both derived directly from a specific graph. In many cases, the network is subject to error or natural changes over time. This motivated a new perspective on GSP, where the signal processing framework is developed for an entire class of graphs with similar structures. This approach can be formalized via the theory of graph limits, where graphs are considered as random samples from a distribution represented by a graphon. When the ne…
