We consider non-uniformly expanding maps on compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension, possibly having discontinuities and/or critical sets, and show that under some general conditions they admit an induced Markov tower structure for which the decay of the return time function can be controlled in terms of the time generic points need to achieve some uniform expanding behavior. As a consequence we obtain some rates for the decay of correlations of those maps and conditions for the validity of the Central Limit Theorem.
We show that a strengthened version of the Collet-Eckmann condition for multimodal maps is topologically invariant. In particular, if f is non-uniformly expanding and the critical points are generic with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant measure, then any map g topologically conjugate to f is also non-uniformly expanding.
Given an ergodic measure with positive entropy and only positive Lyapunov exponents, its dynamical quantifiers can be approximated by means of quantifiers of some family of uniformly expanding repellers. Here non-uniformly expanding maps are studied that are $C^{1+β}$ smooth outside a set of possibly critical or singular points.
We consider a robust class of random non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials with small variation. For each element of this class we develop the Thermodynamical Formalism and prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states among non-uniformly expanding measures. Moreover, we show that these equilibrium states and the random topological pressure vary continuously in this setting.
We prove that solutions $u$ of the equation $f=u-u\circ T$ are automatically Holder continuous when $f$ is Holder continuous, and $T$ is non uniformly expanding and Markov. This result applies in particular to Young towers and to intermittent maps.
We consider families of transformations in multidimensional Riemannian manifolds with non-uniformly expanding behavior. We give sufficient conditions for the continuous variation (in the $L^1$-norm) of the densities of absolutely continuous (with respect to the Lebesgue measure) invariant probability measures for those transformations.
We introduce a new induction scheme for non-uniformly expanding maps $f$ of compact Riemannian manifolds, proving that the existence of a Gibbs-Markov-Young structure is a necessary condition for $f$ to preserve an absolutely continuous probability with all its Lyapunov exponents positive.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
We construct equilibrium states, including measures of maximal entropy, for a large (open) class of non-uniformly expanding maps on compact manifolds. Moreover, we study uniqueness of these equilibrium states, as well as some of their ergodic properties.
We prove that, in Young towers with sufficiently small tails, the speed in the central limit theorem is O(1/\sqrt{n}), and the local limit theorem holds. This implies the same results for many non uniformly expanding dynamical systems, namely those for which a tower with sufficiently fast returns can be constructed.
We give both sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the stochastic stability of non-uniformly expanding maps either with or without critical sets. We also show that the number of probability measures describing the statistical asymptotic behaviour of random orbits is bounded by the number of SRB measures if the noise level is small enough. We study the existence, uniqueness and rate of decay of correlation of equilibrium measures associated to robust classes of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials. The approach used in this paper is the spectral analysis of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator. More precisely, we combine the expanding features of the eigenmeasures of the transfer operator with a Lasota-Yorke type inequality to prove the existence of an unique equilibrium measure with fast decay of correlations.
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
We examine uniqueness of equilibrium states for the natural extension of a topologically exact, non-uniformly expanding, local homeomorphism with a Hölder continuous potential function. We do this by applying general techniques developed by Climenhaga and Thompson, and show there is a natural condition on decompositions that guarantees that a unique equilibrium state exists. We then show how to apply these results to partially hyperbolic attractors.
We show that, for a robust ($C^2$-open) class of random non-uniformly expanding maps, there exists equilibrium states for a large class of potentials.In particular, these sytems have measures of maximal entropy. These results also give a partial answer to a question posed by Liu-Zhao. The proof of the main result uses an extension of techniques in recent works by Alves-Araújo, Alves-Bonatti-Viana and Oliveira.
We give a fairly complete characterization of the exact components of a large class of uniformly expanding Markov maps of $\mathbb{R}$. Using this result, for a class of $\mathbb{Z}$-invariant maps and finite modifications thereof, we prove certain properties of infinite mixing recently introduced by the author.
We consider the local dimension spectrum of a weak Gibbs measure on a C^1 non-uniformly hyperbolic system of Manneville- Pomeau type. We present the spectrum in three ways: using invariant measures, uniformly hyperbolic ergodic measures and equilibrium states. We are also proving analyticity of the spectrum under additional assumptions. All three presentations are well known for smooth uniformly hyperbolic systems.
We prove existence of finitely many ergodic equilibrium states for a large class of non-uniformly expanding local homeomorphisms on compact manifolds and Holder continuous potentials with not very large oscillation. No Markov structure is assumed. If the transformation is topologically mixing there is a unique equilibrium state, it is exact and satisfies a non-uniform Gibbs property. We consider random perturbations of discrete-time dynamical systems. We give sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of certain classes of maps, in a strong sense. This improves the main result in J. F. Alves, V. Araujo, Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, Asterisque 286 (2003), 25--62, where it was proved the convergence of the stationary measures of the random process to the SRB measure of the initial system in the weak* topology. We prove existence of (at most denumerable many) absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for random one-dimensional dynamical systems with asymptotic expansion. If the rate of expansion (Lyapunov exponents) is bounded away from zero, we obtain finitely many ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures, describing the asymptotics of almost every point. We also prove a similar result for higher-dimensional random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. We construct SRB measures for endomorphisms satisfying conditions far weaker than the non-uniformly expansion. As a consequence, the definition of non-uniformly expanding map can be weakened. We also prove the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant measure for local diffeomorphisms, only assuming the existence of hyperbolic times for Lebesgue almost all point of the manifold.
For a non-generic, yet dense subset of $C^1$ expanding Markov maps of the interval we prove the existence of uncountably many Lyapunov optimizing measures which are ergodic, fully supported and have positive entropy. These measures are equilibrium states for some Hölder continuous potentials. We also prove the existence of another non-generic dense subset for which the optimizing measure is unique and supported on a periodic orbit. A key ingredient is a new $C^1$ perturbation lemma which allows us to interpolate between expanding Markov maps and the shift map on a finite number of symbols.
We obtain stochastic stability of C2 non-uniformly expanding one-dimensional endomorphisms, requiring only that the first hyperbolic time map be L^{p}-integrable for p>3. We show that, under this condition (which depends only on the unperturbed dynamics), we can construct a random perturbation that preserves the original hyperbolic times of the unperturbed map and, therefore, to obtain non-uniform expansion for random orbits. We give conditions under which nonuniformly expanding maps exhibit lower bounds of polynomial type for the decay of correlations and for a large class of observables. We show that if the Lasota-Yorke type inequality for the transfer operator of a first return map are satisfied in a Banach space B, and the absolutely continuous invariant measure obtained is weak mixing, in terms of aperiodicity, then under some renewal condition, the maps have polynomial decay of correlations for observables in B. In this paper we construct uniformly expanding random walks on smooth manifolds. In higher dimensions, our definition of uniform expansion measures the growth of subspaces rather than single vectors. Potrie showed that given any open set $U$ of $\text{Diff}^\infty_{vol}(\mathbb{T}^2)$, there exists an uniformly expanding random walk $μ$ supported on a finite subset of $U$. In this paper we extend those results to closed manifolds of any dimension, building on the work of Potrie and Chung to build a robust class of examples.
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. We prove a Berry-Esseen theorem, a local central limit theorem and (local) large and (global) moderate deviations principles for i.i.d. (uniformly) random non-uniformly expanding or hyperbolic maps with exponential first return times. Using existing results the problem is reduced to certain random (Young) tower extensions, which is the main focus of this paper. On the random towers we will obtain our results using contraction properties of random complex equivariant cones with respect to the complex Hilbert projective metric.
Noise-induced order is the phenomenon by which the chaotic regime of a deterministic system is destroyed in the presence of noise. Our results give new estimates for many non-uniformly expanding systems, including Manneville-Pomeau maps, many one-dimensional systems with critical points, and Viana maps. We discuss recent results on decay of correlations for non-uniformly expanding maps. Throughout the discussion, we address the question of why different dynamical systems have different rates of decay of correlations and how this may reflect underlying geometrical characteristics of the system.
We introduce the Markov extension, represented schematically as a tower, to the study of dynamical systems with holes. For tower maps with small holes, we prove the existence of conditionally invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure (abbreviated a.c.c.i.m.). We develop restrictions on the Lebesgue measure of the holes and simple conditions on the dynamics of the tower which ensure existence and uniqueness in a class of Holder continuous densities. We study the rate of decay of correlations for equilibrium states associated to a robust class of non-uniformly expanding maps where no Markov assumption is required. A long-standing question is what invariant sets can be shared by two maps acting on the same space. A similar question stands for invariant measures. A particular interesting case are expanding Markov maps of the circle. If the two involved maps are commuting the answer is almost complete. However very little is known in the non-commutative case. We study the spectrum of transfer operators associated to various dynamical systems. Our aim is to obtain precise information on the discrete spectrum. To this end we propose a unitary approach. We consider various settings where new information can be obtained following different branches along the proposed path. These settings include affine expanding Markov maps, uniformly expanding Markov maps, non-uniformly expanding or simply monotone maps, hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We believe this approach could be greatly generalized.
In the setting of intermittent Pomeau-Manneville maps with time dependent parameters, we show a functional correlation bound widely useful for the analysis of the statistical properties of the model. We give two applications of this result, by showing that in a suitable range of parameters the bound implies the conditions of the normal approximation methods of Stein and Rio. For a single Pomeau-Manneville map belonging to this parameter range, both methods then yield a multivariate central limit theorem with a rate of convergence.
We establish bounds for the measure of deviation sets associated to continuous observables with respect to not necessarily invariant weak Gibbs measures. Under some mild assumptions, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the measure of deviation sets of some non-uniformly expanding maps, including quadratic maps and robust multidimensional non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms. For that purpose, a measure theoretical weak form of specification is introduced and proved to hold for the robust classes of multidimensional nonuniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Viana maps.
