We introduce the Markov extension, represented schematically as a tower, to the study of dynamical systems with holes. For tower maps with small holes, we prove the existence of conditionally invariant probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure (abbreviated a.c.c.i.m.). We develop restrictions on the Lebesgue measure of the holes and simple conditions on the dynamics of the tower which ensure existence and uniqueness in a class of Holder continuous densities. We then use these results to study the existence and properties of a.c.c.i.m. for expanding maps of the interval with holes. We obtain the convergence of the a.c.c.i.m. to the SRB measure of the corresponding closed system as the measure of the hole shrinks to zero.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
We prove that solutions $u$ of the equation $f=u-u\circ T$ are automatically Holder continuous when $f$ is Holder continuous, and $T$ is non uniformly expanding and Markov. This result applies in particular to Young towers and to intermittent maps.
In this short note we describe a simple but remarkably effective method for rigorously estimating Lyapunov exponents for expanding maps of the interval. We illustrate the applicability of this method with some standard examples.
In this paper we investigate multifractal decompositions based on values of Birkhoff averages of functions from a class of symbolically continuous functions. This will be done for an expanding interval map with infinitely many branches and is a generalisation of previous work for expanding maps with finitely many branches. We show that there are substantial differences between this case and the setting where the expanding map has only finitely many branches.
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
For a non-generic, yet dense subset of $C^1$ expanding Markov maps of the interval we prove the existence of uncountably many Lyapunov optimizing measures which are ergodic, fully supported and have positive entropy. These measures are equilibrium states for some Hölder continuous potentials. We also prove the existence of another non-generic dense subset for which the optimizing measure is unique and supported on a periodic orbit. A key ingredient is a new $C^1$ perturbation lemma which allows us to interpolate between expanding Markov maps and the shift map on a finite number of symbols.
We consider non-uniformly expanding maps on compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension, possibly having discontinuities and/or critical sets, and show that under some general conditions they admit an induced Markov tower structure for which the decay of the return time function can be controlled in terms of the time generic points need to achieve some uniform expanding behavior. As a consequence we obtain some rates for the decay of correlations of those maps and conditions for the validity of the Central Limit Theorem.
We study parametrised families of piecewise expanding interval mappings $T_a \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ with absolutely continuous invariant measures $μ_a$ and give sufficient conditions for a point $X(a)$ to be typical with respect to $(T_a, μ_a)$ for almost all parameters $a$. This is similar to a result by D. Schnellmann, but with different assumptions.
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
We give a fairly complete characterization of the exact components of a large class of uniformly expanding Markov maps of $\mathbb{R}$. Using this result, for a class of $\mathbb{Z}$-invariant maps and finite modifications thereof, we prove certain properties of infinite mixing recently introduced by the author.
For a map $T \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ with an invariant measure $μ$, we study, for a $μ$-typical $x$, the set of points $y$ such that the inequality $|T^n x - y| < r_n$ is satisfied for infinitely many $n$. We give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of this set, under the assumption that $T$ is piecewise expanding and $μ_ϕ$ is a Gibbs measure. In some cases we also show that the set has a large intersection property.
We study differentiability of topological conjugacies between expanding piecewise $C^{1+ε}$ interval maps. If these conjugacies are not $C^1$, then they have zero derivative almost everywhere. We obtain the result that in this case the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the derivative of the conjugacy does not exist lies strictly between zero and one. Using multifractal analysis and thermodynamic formalism, we show that this Hausdorff dimension is explicitly determined by the Lyapunov spectrum. Moreover, we show that these results give rise to a "rigidity dichotomy" for the typ…
We consider a partially hyperbolic set $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the centre-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ expands non-uniformly on some local unstable disk. We show that under these assumptions $f$ induces a Gibbs-Markov structure. Moreover, the decay of the return time function can be controlled in terms of the time typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding behavior in the centre-unstable direction. As an application of the main result we obtain certain rates for decay of correlations, large deviations, an al…
We introduce a family of Banach spaces of measures, each containing the set of measures with density of bounded variation. These spaces are suitable for the study of weighted transfer operators of piecewise-smooth maps of the interval where the weighting used in the transfer operator is not better than piecewise Hölder continuous and the partition on which the map is continuous may possess a countable number of elements. For such weighted transfer operators we give upper bounds for both the spectral radius and for the essential spectral radius.
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associat…
We introduce countably Markov interval functions and show that two inverse limits with countably Markov interval bonding functions are homeomorphic if the functions follow the same pattern. This result presents a generalization of well-known results of S. Holte, and I. Banič and T. Lunder.
A long-standing question is what invariant sets can be shared by two maps acting on the same space. A similar question stands for invariant measures. A particular interesting case are expanding Markov maps of the circle. If the two involved maps are commuting the answer is almost complete. However very little is known in the non-commutative case. A first step is to analyze the structure of the invariant sets of a single map. For a mapping of the circle of class $C^α$, $α>1$, we study the topological structure of the set containing all compact invariant sets. Furthermore for a fixed such mappin…
We employ techniques from optimal transport in order to prove decay of transfer operators associated to iterated functions systems and expanding maps, giving rise to a new proof without requiring a Doeblin-Fortet (or Lasota-Yorke) inequality. Our main result is the following. Suppose $T$ is an expanding transformation acting on a compact metric space $M$ and $A: M \to \mathbb{R}$ a given fixed H{ö}lder function, and denote by $L$ the Ruelle operator associated to $A$. We show that if $L$ is normalized (i.e. if $L(1)=1$), then the dual transfer operator $L^*$ is an exponential contraction on th…
Expanding maps with indifferent fixed points, a.k.a. intermittent maps, are popular models in nonlinear dynamics and infinite ergodic theory. We present a simple proof of the exactness of a wide class of expanding maps of [0,1], with countably many surjective branches and a strongly neutral fixed point in 0.
We consider a family of skew-products of the form $(Tx, g_x(t)) : X \times \mathbb{R} \to X \times \mathbb{R}$ where $T$ is a continuous expanding Markov map and $g_x : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a family of homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}$. A function $u: X \to \mathbb{R}$ is said to be an invariant graph if $\mathrm{graph}(u) = \{(x,u(x)) \mid x\in X\}$ is an invariant set for the skew-product; equivalently if $u(T(x)) = g_x(u(x))$. A well-studied problem is to consider the existence, regularity and dimension-theoretic properties of such functions, usually under strong contraction or expans…
We study Markov multi-maps of the interval from the point of view of topological dynamics. Specifically, we investigate whether they have various properties, including topological transitivity, topological mixing, dense periodic points, and specification. To each Markov multi-map, we associate a shift of finite type (SFT), and then our main results relate the properties of the SFT with those of the Markov multi-map. These results complement existing work showing a relationship between the topological entropy of a Markov multi-map and its associated SFT. We also characterize when the inverse li…
We analyze the two-point motions of iterated function systems on the unit interval generated by expanding and contracting affine maps, where the expansion and contraction rates are determined by a pair $(M,N)$ of integers. This dynamics depends on the Lyapunov exponent. For a negative Lyapunov exponent we establish synchronization, meaning convergence of orbits with different initial points. For a vanishing Lyapunov exponent we establish intermittency, where orbits are close for a set of iterates of full density, but are intermittently apart. For a positive Lyapunov exponent we show the existe…
Let $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ be an interval and $T_a:[0,1]\to[0,1]$, $a\in I$, a one-parameter family of piecewise expanding maps such that for each $a\in I$ the map $T_a$ admits a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure $μ_a$. We establish sufficient conditions on such a one-parameter family such that a given point $x\in[0,1]$ is typical for $μ_a$ for a full Lebesgue measure set of parameters $a$, i.e. $$ \frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}δ_{T_a^i(x)} \overset{\text{weak-}*}{\longrightarrow}μ_a,\qquad\text{as} n\to\infty, $$ for Lebesgue almost every $a\in I$. In particular, we consid…
We show that two inverse limits of inverse sequences of closed intervals and quasi Markov bonding functions are homeomorphic, if the inverse sequences follow the same pattern. This significantly improves Holte's result about when two inverse limits of inverse sequences with Markov interval maps as bonding functions are homeomorphic. Our result improves Holte's result in several directions: (1) it generalizes finite Markov partitions to Markov pairs of sets that may even be uncountable, (2) it generalizes Markov interval maps $I\rightarrow I$ to quasi Markov functions $I\rightarrow J$ (so the d…
We investigate a phenomenon observed by W. Thurston wherein one constructs a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on the limit set of a certain lift of a piecewise-linear expanding interval map. We reconcile this construction with a special subclass of generalized pseudo-Anosovs, first defined by de Carvalho. From there we classify the circumstances under which this construction produces a pseudo-Anosov. As an application, we produce for each $g \geq 1$ a pseudo-Anosov $ϕ_g$ on the surface of genus $g$ that preserves an algebraically primitive translation structure and whose dilatation $λ_g$ is a Salem…
We construct inducing schemes for general multi-dimensional piecewise expanding maps where the base transformation is Gibbs-Markov and the return times have exponential tails. Such structures are a crucial tool in proving statistical properties of dynamical systems with some hyperbolicity.
We consider a class $\mathcal{F}$ of Markov multi-maps on the unit interval. Any multi-map gives rise to a space of trajectories, which is a closed, shift-invariant subset of $[0,1]^{\mathbb{Z}_+}$. For a multi-map in $\mathcal{F}$, we show that the space of trajectories is (Borel) entropy conjugate to an associated shift of finite type. Additionally, we characterize the set of numbers that can be obtained as the topological entropy of a multi-map in $\mathcal{F}$.
For a large class of expanding maps of the interval, we prove that partial sums of Lipschitz observables satisfy an almost sure central limit theorem (ASCLT). In fact, we provide a speed of convergence in the Kantorovich metric. Maxima of partial sums are also shown to obey an ASCLT. The key-tool is an exponential inequality recently obtained. Then we derive almost-sure convergence rates for the supremum of moving averages of Lipschitz observables (Erdos-Renyi type law). We end up with an application to entropy estimation ASCLT's that refi ne Shannon-McMillan-Breiman and Ornstein-Weiss theorem…
We introduce a new induction scheme for non-uniformly expanding maps $f$ of compact Riemannian manifolds, proving that the existence of a Gibbs-Markov-Young structure is a necessary condition for $f$ to preserve an absolutely continuous probability with all its Lyapunov exponents positive.
For a large class of nonuniformly expanding maps of $\Bbb R^m$, with indifferent fixed points and unbounded distorsion and non necessarily Markovian, we construct an absolutely continuous invariant measure. We extend to our case techniques previously used for expanding maps on quasi-Hölder spaces. We give general conditions and provide examples to which apply our result.
Consider a piecewise smooth expanding map of the interval possessing several invariant subintervals and the same number of ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (ACIMs). After this system is perturbed to make the subintervals lose their invariance in such a way that there is a unique ACIM, we show how to approximate the diffusion coefficient for an observable of bounded variation by the diffusion coefficient of a related continuous time Markov chain.
We consider the regularity of measurable solutions $χ$ to the cohomological equation \[ ϕ= χ\circ T -χ, \] where $(T,X,μ)$ is a dynamical system and $ϕ\colon X\rightarrow \R$ is a $C^k$ valued cocycle in the setting in which $T \colon X\rightarrow X$ is a piecewise $C^k$ Gibbs--Markov map, an affine $β$-transformation of the unit interval or more generally a piecewise $C^{k}$ uniformly expanding map of an interval. We show that under mild assumptions, bounded solutions $χ$ possess $C^k$ versions. In particular we show that if $(T,X,μ)$ is a $β$-transformation then $χ$ has a $C^k$ version, thus…
We study the spectrum of transfer operators associated to various dynamical systems. Our aim is to obtain precise information on the discrete spectrum. To this end we propose a unitary approach. We consider various settings where new information can be obtained following different branches along the proposed path. These settings include affine expanding Markov maps, uniformly expanding Markov maps, non-uniformly expanding or simply monotone maps, hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We believe this approach could be greatly generalized.
The tent map is an elementary example of an interval map possessing many interesting properties, such as dense periodicity, exactness, Lipschitzness and a kind of length-expansiveness. It is often used in constructions of dynamical systems on the interval/trees/graphs. The purpose of the present paper is to construct, on totally regular continua (i.e. on topologically rectifiable curves), maps sharing some typical properties with the tent map. These maps will be called length-expanding Lipschitz maps, briefly LEL maps. We show that every totally regular continuum endowed with a suitable metric…
We consider partially hyperbolic \( C^{1+} \) diffeomorphisms of compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension which admit a partially hyperbolic tangent bundle decomposition \( E^s\oplus E^{cu} \). Assuming the existence of a set of positive Lebesgue measure on which \( f \) satisfies a weak nonuniform expansivity assumption in the centre~unstable direction, we prove that there exists at most a finite number of transitive attractors each of which supports an SRB measure. As part of our argument, we prove that each attractor admits a Gibbs-Markov-Young geometric structure with integrable…
We consider random perturbations of a topologically transitive local diffeomorphism of a Riemannian manifold. We show that if an absolutely continuous ergodic stationary measures is expanding (all Lyapunov exponents positive), then there is a random Gibbs-Markov-Young structure which can be used to lift that measure. We also prove that if the original map admits a finite number of expanding invariant measures then the stationary measures of a sufficiently small stochastic perturbation are expanding.
Let $ T:[0,1]\to[0,1] $ be an expanding Markov map with a finite partition. Let $ μ_ϕ$ be the invariant Gibbs measure associated with a Hölder continuous potential $ ϕ$. In this paper, we investigate the size of the uniform approximation set \[\mathcal U^κ(x):=\{y\in[0,1]:\forall N\gg1,~\exists n\le N, \text{ such that }|T^nx-y|<N^{-κ}\},\] where $ κ>0 $ and $ x\in[0,1] $. The critical value of $ κ$ such that $ \textrm{dim}_{\textrm H}\mathcal U^κ(x)=1 $ for $ μ_ϕ$-a.e.$ \, x $ is proven to be $ 1/α_{\max} $, where $ α_{\max}=-\int ϕ\,dμ_{\max}/\int\log|T'|\,dμ_{\max} $ and $ μ_{\max} $ is the…
Takens constructed a residual subset of the state space consisting of initial points with historic behaviour for expanding maps on the circle. We prove that this statistical property of expanding maps on the circle is preserved under small random perturbations. The proof is given by establishing a random Markov partition, which follows from a random version of Shub's Theorem on topological conjugacy with the folding maps.
We construct a uniformly expanding map of the interval, preserving Lebesgue measure, such that the corresponding transfer operator admits a spectral gap on the space of Lipschitz functions, but does not act continuously on the space of bounded variation functions.
Consider $d$ disjoint closed subintervals of the unit interval and consider an orientation preserving expanding map which maps each of these subintervals to the whole unit interval. The set of points where all iterates of this expanding map are defined is a Cantor set. Associated to the construction of this Cantor set is the scaling function which records the infinitely deep geometry of this Cantor set. This scaling function is an invariant of $C^1$ conjugation. We solve the inverse problem posed by Dennis Sullivan: given a scaling function, determine the maximal possible smoothness of any exp…
For an integer $m \geq 2$, let $\mathcal{P}_m$ be the partition of the unit interval $I$ into $m$ equal subintervals, and let $\mathcal{F}_m$ be the class of piecewise linear maps on $I$ with constant slope $\pm m$ on each element of $\mathcal{P}_m$. We investigate the effect on mixing properties when $f \in \mathcal{F}_m$ is composed with the interval exchange map given by a permutation $σ\in S_N$ interchanging the $N$ subintervals of $\mathcal{P}_N$. This extends the work in a previous paper [N.P. Byott, M. Holland and Y. Zhang, DCDS, {\bf 33}, (2013) 3365--3390], where we considered only th…
We study the susceptibility function Psi(z) associated to the perturbation f_t=f+tX of a piecewise expanding interval map f. The analysis is based on a spectral description of transfer operators. It gives in particular sufficient conditions which guarantee that Psi(z) is holomorphic in a disc of larger than one. Although Psi(1) is the formal derivative of the SRB measure of f_t with respect to t, we present examples satisfying our conditions so that the SRB measure is not Lipschitz.*We propose a new version of Ruelle's conjectures.* In v2, we corrected a few minor mistakes and added Conjecture…
